Chapter Two

Safe Haven

"Did you enjoy the ride?" A haunting voice murmured from above his head and a blush darkened his cheeks, causing him to quickly step back and almost fall off the porch if it wasn't for the hand that suddenly lashed out and grabbed onto his forearm gruffly, hauling him back onto the concrete.

"Erm, yes, I did... Thank you for allowing me to stay here. You really didn't need to - I could have stayed at a hotel or something..."

"This place is far from town, I didn't want you to spend your money on cab fare." The stranger straightened up and bowed, having forgotten his manners in the flurry of what had happened. "Kris."

"Luhan."

"Would you like to come in?"

"When should we start the interview?"

"Whenever you'd like."

He nibbled on his lip. "Sooner rather than later?"

"Sounds good." Kris gestured into the house and Luhan ducked his head with a shy grateful smile, escaping the slight chill of outside and stepping over the threshold. He looked over the quaint white interior of the grand hall and large great room that opened up on the left hand side.

"I haven't seen a place like this before..."

"It's more common in America."

"I see... It's like a movie."

"Yeah, kind of." Kris chuckled and took the lead. "Are you hungry? Thirsty?"

"Yeah, a little..."

"Which one?"

"Oh, uh-" There goes that blush again. Ugh, he hated when he blushed, because it wasn't just the apples of his cheeks that made him look like an anime character or something - It completely swallowed his head and made him look like a grape that needed to pop. He turned his head down, unable to look at the god in front of him. "Water, would be nice..."

The stranger simply nodded and walked away, leaving Luhan to explore what he could of the house. Socializing was so difficult... Conversations always sounded strained, and he knew that people could sense his anxiety. He bit his lip hard to keep it from trembling. Kris was probably already judging him as he got his glass of water.

"Here you go."

"What were you saying about me?"

He covered his mouth with his free hand, eyes wide. He hadn't meant to say that! At least, not out loud.

"At which time?"

He froze. Eh? "U-Um..."

"Because just now I was thinking you looked cute."

Eh?!

He turned his head away, wishing that there was some sort of a draft in here to cool his face that was on fire. Nope. A perfectly built and managed house. Darn.

"Do you have a bathroom?"

"Of course, this way."

The blonde followed the brunette down the hallway, up some stairs, and down another hallway, the two passing by bedroom after bedroom before the brunette opened a door and gestured for the younger boy to enter the latrine.

"If you need anything, don't be afraid to holler."

"Er, okay." Luhan entered the room and shut the door, quickly locking it. But he didn't need to urinate - not right now, anyway. He was staring at himself in the mirror- the way his face looked like a red, red apple, and how his eyes looked a little teary. He bit his lip harder and couldn't resist an 'ow' as he felt blood bead through the flesh. He really needed to find a different outlet for his nervousness... Maybe if he just told Kris... No! If he told him that meant that he was weak- weaker than he usually regarded himself- and he wanted to change. Needed to change.

By the time he had exited the bathroom, Kris was nowhere to be found- as if he would hang around the bathroom waiting for him. Hah. But now where was he supposed to go? He hadn't even been given a proper tour yet. It seemed Kris had some ADD. Or ADHD.

"Kris?" He called out nervously, noticing the quake in his voice, and the brunette seemed to pop out of nowhere.

"Ready for dinner?"

"Uh, sure." Stop saying uh, you know you're hungry! "Yeah, I'm starving."

He chuckled and nodded, taking the blonde's hand and leading him to the dining room. A pretty female was setting filled dishes out on the table top, and Luhan couldn't help but feel jealous. This had to be his wife. Rats!

"Thank you." The stranger murmured, passing his hands over her shoulders and down to her hips before he sat down, gesturing for Luhan to do the same. Facing across each other from different sides of the room, they began to eat, and Luhan couldn't help but ask the question that was lingering in his mind.

"Who is she?"

"Who's who?"

"...The girl that made us dinner."

"Geneva. She's the maid."

"...Chamber maid?"

He laughed.

"Perhaps." He gave the blonde a wink, and it sent a surge of emotions throughout his body- the two most major ones being lust and anger.

"Can you just give me a straight out answer?"

"Why do you need to know?"

"Because... it's for the article."

"Oh?"

"Mm."

"No, she's not the chamber maid. She works here part time - Weekends are off, and times are switched every day. Evenings and mornings."

"Oh." He felt relief swell in his heart, though he wasn't too sure why. He had only just met this guy, and already he was staking a claim?! Yes, he definitely needed an outlet. He was going insane.

The rest of the dinner was spent in silence, and Luhan couldn't help but wonder if there was more to Kris's relationship with 'Geneva' than he let on. Which only seemed to fuel the fire.
