Miracles of December

Miracles of December

Kai stuffed his entire books into a box. His room looks neat because he already cleaned the room yesterday. Tomorrow he will leave Korea. He will follow his family and lives in a new place. Kai accidentally stepped on a picture. He picked it up and stared at the picture, recalling his mind about the time he took the picture. He suddenly smiled. He saw himself and Eunjoo smiling while his arm linked on her shoulder. They looked happy. Kai actually didn’t remember when the photo was taken. As far as he remembers, they never took a photo together. But, it’s okay. At least he can see the sweet moment rather than remembering it. The memory of him and Eunjoo.

“Knock. Knock!” Kai was surprised with the sound. He quickly slipped the photo under his pillow. He’s afraid that his mother will throw out the photo if she finds out that Kai still didn’t break up yet with Eunjoo. Last month, his mother forced him to leave Eunjoo but Kai didn’t want to do that. He needs Eunjoo in his life. He can’t leave without her. So, he lied to his mother, saying that they already broke up when the fact is, he still meets her. He really didn’t understand why his mother couldn’t accept Eunjoo as his girlfriend and kept asking him to break up with Eunjoo. Because of her family? To Kai, money can’t buy any happiness that he felt, but to his mother, money is everything. He can’t be with Eunjoo because she is poor but Kai loves her sincerely and he knows that Eunjoo also loves him.

“Are you done, son?” a middle age woman came and sit beside Kai.

“There’s some thing that I need to clear. Don’t worry, I’ll finish as soon as possible.” Kai was about to stand but his mother suddenly held his hand. Kai sat again, frowning as he looked at his mother. She looked pale and weak.

“Mom, are you alright?” Kai felt worried about his mother. He held her hand tightly. Her mother was the only family member that he had. His father died when he was 4 years old. He didn’t know his father’s face. He didn’t even know his name. His mother worked so hard for Kai. She’s now managing her husband company. She only has Kai in her life. She will do anything for Kai. Sometimes, Kai felt like he was being shackled by his mother but now, he knows that his mother only wants the best for him.

“I hope you can accept my decision…” his mother tried to make Kai believed in her. She knows that Kai still couldn’t leave that girl.

“I will, mom.” Kai shifted his eyes towards the pillow. I’m not sure but I will try mom.

His mother stood up and leaved the room. There is nothing she wanted to say more. Kai sigh a relief. He took the photo and suddenly his phone vibrated. There was a message coming. Kai opened the message. It’s from someone he really misses right now.

Oppa! Let’s go shopping!!”

Kai smiled while reading the message. Eunjoo always makes him feeling happy. She always acted cute when Kai sulked. Kai suddenly remembered. His mother never allows him to meet Eunjoo but… he really wanted to meet Eunjoo right now. He got an idea. Without wasting time, he took his sweater, wallet and phone then leaved the room. He hopes his mother will not spot him. He walked slowly on the stairs. He looked around and found no one. He sighed and walked down until there’re 5 more stairs left below.

“Kai, where are you going?” Kai rounded his eyes and turned to the left. His mother was standing while she crossed her hands and glared at him.

“I just want to go nearer shop. I need to buy something…” Kai lied and smiled sheepishly.

“You are not going to meet Eunjoo right?”

“No, mom. Of course not. I’ll be right back. Bye. Love you, mom.” Kai left the house fastly before his mother opened to ask other question.

The wind that passed by was so cold. The temperature today kept increasing. The road was now covered by white cotton. Kai hugged himself. He saw a lot of couple hugging each other, sharing the warmth. He sighed. If he has the chance, he would do that to Eunjoo too. The couples looked so happy. Not like him. His wish is to celebrate Christmas with Eunjoo. Celebrate it for the first time with her. He didn’t know how the feeling but he knows if they celebrate it, it will be so happy for them. As Kai reached the mall, he searched for Eunjoo who might be pouting at him since he came late. Kai stopped his step as he remembered something. He can’t be like this. There will be more hearts that gonna hurt if he didn’t do it. He turned to the left and saw Eunjoo standing beside the candy shop while holding her phone. He quickly hid behind the wall, covering himself from her. She was still waiting. Sometimes, she will rub her hands and hugged herself. Sometimes, she will turns to glass at the candy shop, fixing her hair and continued waiting for him. He looked at her with a dewy eye. She was really pretty today. Wearing a peach dress as she done her hair neatly. It was a simple outfit actually but he still thought that she’s the most beautiful woman he ever met. Kai looked at his watch. 3 o’clock. Should he go to Eunjoo now?

-Flashback-

“Leave her or you’re not my son anymore!” Miss Kim needs to be more certain to his son. She only wants the best for his only son.

“But mom.. I love her so much…” Kai try to coax her mother but he knows she will never hear that. For her, love is expensive. Yet, you can still buy it with money. Only, if you have enough money.

“I’ll let you meet other girls but not her. She didn’t suit you.”

“Mom… why you…” Kai didn’t want to be rude to his mother.

“Leave her and then, we’ll leave this country.”

“MOM!” Kai couldn’t believe that his mom will do that. He can’t leave her. She’s everything to him. There’s no reason for him to leave her.

“You should get someone better then her. She’s poo-”

“Poor? Is that what you’re trying to say Mom? I didn’t care if she’s poor or rich. I love her and that’s all matter.”

“Love her? Did you lose your mind? She’s not the same like us. She’s different Kai.”

“So, if she’s rich, you will able accept her?”

“Yes! I’ll accept her if she’s on the same level as us...”

-End of flashback-

Kai suddenly remembered his fight with his mother. He turned to Eunjoo and sighed. Should I leave my mom so that I can be with you?

Eunjoo took out her phone. “Should I call him or not?” Eunjoo didn’t want to disturb Kai but she has been waiting for 3 hours. Eunjoo looked at her watch. 6 o’clock. Kai didn’t appear yet. Eunjoo sat on a bench and sighed. Since last weeks, she rarely meets Kai. Eunjoo knew what was going on. Even though Kai didn’t tell her, she already knew it. She knew that Kai’s mother couldn’t accept her as Kai’s girlfriend. Never.

Eunjoo wanted to break this pure relationship but, she knows that she can’t live without Kai. The love that they built was too strong. Yes, she knows that a poor girl like her couldn’t be together with a rich guys like Kai. She already knew that yet she still tried to ignore it because Kai always said that he wanted to make her life happy.

Eunjoo stretched her body. Maybe she stood too long.

“It’s okay oppa, I’ll wait for you. Even if you said you’ll come tomorrow, I’ll wait..”

The sky was turning dark now. Many people have done their shopping and already at home to celebrate Christmas tomorrow. But Eunjoo? She still stood there alone, waiting for someone who didn’t appeared until now. Eunjoo looked at her watch again. 9 o’clock. It meant that she has been standing for 6 hours. Her body was feeling tired now but she ignored it. She need and has to wait for Kai. She knew that he will come. Like a miracle. After waiting for how many hours, Kai came. He really came. Even though their date should be 6 hours ago, Eunjoo still felt happy. At least, Kai came.

“Why you didn’t go home yet? You’re not afraid? What if someone kidnap you? Why you didn’t tell me that you still here? Call me or anything…What if I didn’t come? Are you will still waiting here?”

Kai actually felt a little mad with Eunjoo. He knew that this was his fault. He’s too afraid to face the reality. He didn’t want to lose her yet he didn’t know how to do it.

“Yes. I’ll wait here. I’ll wait until you come. I’ll wait because of you..” Eunjoo held Kai’s hand. She was about to cry but she held it. She wanted to show that she’s happy. She’s happy that Kai was here. Kai’s heart skipped a beat at her words. Because of you.

“Oppa, we still can buy now. There’s some shop that didn’t close yet.” Eunjoo pulled Kai hand.

“Eunjoo… There is something that we should talk about…” Kai suddenly said something that made Eunjoo stopped pulling him.

“There is nothing to talk about. Oppa, let’s go before they close the shop…” Eunjoo tried to cheer her heart. She knew what he meant but she didn’t ready yet to hear it.

“Let’s go to another place…” Kai pulled Eunjoo’s arm without seeing her face. It’s better to do it now though it’s so pain.

They went to a more quite place. Eunjoo avoided Kai and turned to the other sides. She didn’t want to cry but she already did. She knew that this day will come but she’s not ready yet to accept it.

Kai knew that she was crying. He could tell even though he couldn’t see her face. He didn’t know how to start or when to start. But still, he needs to do it.

“Let’s break up.. I can’t stand this drama anymore. I’m sorry for giving you hope although I knew the fact that we can’t be together. My mom is right. We can’t be together. I’m rich and you..” He paused and gripped his hands. “You’re poor.. We didn’t suit each other. I don’t think I can be happy with you..” Love means sacrificed and he sacrificed himself to leave Eunjoo. Although it’s pain, he didn’t have any choice left.

“You’re bad Jongin. I believe in you but…” Eunjoo lost her words and let the tears flowed on her cheeks.

“Yes… I’m bad. You don’t have to believe me…” If he had a chance, he wanted to make Eunjoo happy, but he can’t.

“Can you grant my last wish…?” Eunjoo turned to Kai.

“Before this month end, I really want to celebrate this Christmas with the person I love.” Eunjoo looked into Kai’s eyes. “Can you celebrate it with me?”

Eunjoo lighted up the candle as she sat on the seat. After hearing the wish, Kai bought a cake from the nearer shop cake. He bought a small cake. The cake was decorated with a Santa riding his deer that suit this Christmas. He put the cake on the table as Eunjoo quickly put the small lighted candle on the cake..

“Oppa, let’s sing together. Even though today was not the real Christmas, we can still pretend right.” Eunjoo tried to make a smile in front of Kai. But that was a fake smile. Kai knew it yet he couldn’t do anything. He nodded.

“We… wish..you..you a merry…Christmas…” They sang along but Eunjoo started to cry. She sang in cries. Kai stopped singing. He couldn’t sing anymore. He couldn’t bear seeing Eunjoo in this situation.

“Oppa, why are you stopping?” Kai really wanted to swipe the tears that fell down on Eunjoo’s cheeks but he couldn’t. Eunjoo continued singing. Kai stared at her. Tomorrow, what will happen? A day without seeing Eunjoo. He couldn’t imagine anything for tomorrow. No, he didn’t want to imagine it. He will leave this country and the most hurting him, he will leave Eunjoo. Living in other country without a girl name Lee Eunjoo.

“And the happy new years.” Eunjoo had done singing. She stops smiling.

“Okay, let’s eat the cake.” Kai searched for a cake knife in the plastic cake. Suddenly, Eunjoo threw the cake on the floor. Kai was shocked. He wanted to ask why, but he hesitated.

“Let’s end this. Me and you. Tomorrow, we’re no more a couple. Go and live with your mother. I don’t want to see you anymore. As you said, I didn’t suit you. I understand it. A rich and a poor girl, how can that possible. I’m not stupid. I know that the day will come, so I’ve prepared to accept it. See, I’m smiling. I’ll go first. Goodbye, Jongin oppa.” Eunjoo stood up and left the place. Tears started flowing back as she tried to wipe them although she knew that they will not stop. Kai wanted to chase Eunjoo. He wanted to hug her right now but he knew he couldn’t do anything. He just stood there, watching her walking far from him. He realized that Eunjoo is not for him anymore. This Christmas. We should celebrate it together and we did. We have celebrated it together. Kai smiled and looked at the cake on the floor.

“Its better I see you leave me than you see I leave you, Eunjoo”
