What Are You? (Short Story) *Completed*

“Get back here,” an evil, gruff voice called out.  She ran away from the voice.  Many eerie voices kept playing.  “Get back here!”

“NO!” you screamed when you woke up from the horrible dream.  You breathed heavily, sweating and panting from the dream.  You looked around your dark room in fear.  You put her knees up and covered your ears after.  “Make these dreams stop.  Make the pointless dreams stop,” you begged and silent cried.

It was now morning.  You looked at the mirror to see eye bags from your horrible sleep last night.  You brushed your hair, placed the tie on your uniform, grabbed your backpack and slowly walked to school.  The wind was blowing quite hard as you walked.  After every few minutes you would turn back, thinking as if someone was following behind you.  You shook your head.  ‘It’s just the wind.  It’s just the wind,’ you thought.

“Skip school,” you soon heard a husky voice say.  You stopped walking and stood there shocked.  Your eyes were widened.  “Skip school.”

“W-Who are you?” you asked.  The voice didn’t answer.  You couldn’t help but follow what the voice said.

“Go home,” you heard the husky voice again.  You nodded and turned back and ran back to your house.

“____~ah, why are you home?  Go to school,” your umma said.

“I heard it was cancelled due to a teacher’s meeting about some issue they’re having,” you lied.  Your umma raised an eyebrow at you.  She didn’t seem too convinced.  You just looked at her.

“Okay, I’ll let this go for today,” she said and went back to cooking.  You nodded and walked to your room.  You took your book and read your book, something that you usually do when you get back from school before starting homework.

“You’re safe,” she heard the same husky voice say.  You looked up from her book and looked around.  Nothing.

Hours passed.  You were curious.  What’s happening in school?  Why can’t you go?  Mostly, who’s telling you this?  Your umma left to go to the grocery for food.  You were downstairs, watching television.

“Channel 5,” the husky voice said.  With hesitation, you did.

“This is news reporter, Park JungSoo, and here I am in Seoul University.  It’s a horrible sight to see of this school,” said JungSoo.  The camera moved to the school.  The windows were broken as if someone broke in.  The building was burned and you can still see a little fire.  Some students were with the paramedics, being sent in the ambulance.  Blood was on the steps…it was horror.  “Gangsters from another part of Korea came in and wanted to destroy and kill students and staff members in the school.  There are over 100,000 students attending (A/N: Sorry, if there can be more then there’s more students) and about 20 students injured and a couple dead.  About 4 teachers died and 10 are injured.  It’s said the school will be shut down for a while until everything is solved and safe to enter.  More news about this will be revealed tonight at 6.”

You quickly changed the channel.  Tears were in formed in your eyes.  You thought about your one and only best friend, YeonHee.  You couldn’t help but think she was injured.  You couldn’t help but think that she was one of the students who died.

“She’s alive and unharmed,” the husky voice said.  Your tears gradually stopped and you looked around.

“Who are you?” you asked.  Again, you heard nothing but the silence in your home.  You jumped a little to hear the door open.

          “___~ah!” your umma called.

“___~ah!” you heard YeonHee’s voice.  You smiled and quickly ran to the door.  You smiled more to see YeonHee safe and unharmed.  You ran and hugged her.

“Unnie, gwenchena?” you asked, but in a whisper.

“Neh,” YeonHee answered.  “Your mom invited me over and my umma said that I can sleep over.  How’s that?  No school for like a while.”  You nodded and looked at your mom.

          “Thanks umma,” you said.

“No problem.  I’ll call down when lunch is ready,” she said and walked in the kitchen.  YeonHee then dragged you up to your room.  She shut the door and locked it.

          “What’s wrong?” you asked.

“I don’t wanna go back to that school,” YeonHee said.  “It’s the scariest thing to ever experience.  Dangerous men were everywhere.  The looks on their faces weren’t pretty.  They had bruises and scars.  They were angry and they were murderous.  You were lucky, ___~ah.  You were very lucky.”  Tears were falling down her face.  You felt sorry.  You never liked it when your friend is crying.  Quickly, you hugged her.

“It’s alright.  They will never come back,” you said.  She nodded and released the hug.

“How come you didn’t go to school?  You never miss school,” YeonHee stated.

“I heard a voice,” you answered.  She looked at you questionably.  “A husky voice saying to skip school, go home.  He said that I was safe.  Then while watching TV, he said ‘Channel 5’ and the news of the school appeared.  I was worried that something happened to you.  He said that you were unharmed and alive.”

          “Who said it?” she asked.

“That’s what I asked.  He never answered me,” you answered.

A couple of days passed.  You haven’t heard the husky voice again.  Every day you will try and replay the voice in your mind.  His voice wouldn’t leave your mind all day.  His voice just wants you listen to him.  And since that day, your nightmares were replaced with someone saving you for once.  You were sleeping in your bed, having another nightmare coming to you.

          “Stay away.”

He attacked them and soon, you woke up.  You looked around.  The voice seemed so real.  It seems like the voice was said in your ear.

“Sleep,” the husky voice said.  You nodded and lied down in bed.

“Who are you?” you asked again.  “Show yourself.”

You looked around and saw no one.  You saw nothing but just your normal bed room.  You sighed and closed your eyes, sleeping.  In your sleep, you can feel someone caressing your cheek.  The touch was soft and gentle.  The feeling was warm and comfortable.  Your eyes were closed, enjoying the feeling of the touch.  You felt as if you were in a peaceful meadow.  Slowly you opened your eyes and found yourself in your room.  You checked the time.  7AM.

“So early,” you said and got up to change so you can go out for a walk.

Cars are being driven and people were walking in the early morning, but still, it was nice and calming.  It was calming enough for you to clear your mind.

“Move two steps to your right,” the same husky voice said.  You did and soon a flower pot fell.  You froze and your eyes widened.  You started to look around.  You saw a faint appearance by a tree.  You quickly ran there to see no one again.

“Yah!  Where are you?  Who are you?” you asked loudly.  People looked who passed by and heard, looked at you weirdly.  You didn’t care.  You were curious.

          “Nothing,” the voice responded.

You can feel a presence behind you.  You turned around to see nothing, but to feel someone.  Who was it?  Shouldn’t you be scared?  Why are you calm?

“Who are you?” you asked again.  “I can feel you here.”

The presence was soon gone.  You close your eyes and sighed.  ‘I’m going nuts, am I?’ you asked yourself.

“You’re not,” the voice said.  The presence you felt was there again.  But once you turned around, you felt the presence gone.  You ran back to your house, ran back to your room.

“Who are you?” you asked again and again.  “Where are you?”

“Later,” he said.  You looked around your room and slowly nodded.  The presence is still there.  You can feel it sitting on your desk chair.  You lied on your bed, anxiously waiting for tonight.  “Don’t just lie there.”  You sat up and looked at your chair.  The presence was there.  It felt…different from the others that you experience in your lifetime.  This was unexplainable.  You decided to go outside and head to the bookstore.

“Get out of there,” a voice said.  You jumped a little from startle.  You quickly put the book back and casually walked out.  Your legs had you go and hide behind a tree.  When three minutes passed, there was a break in.  “Run out.”  You did.  You slightly turned your head and a robber was walking towards the tree you were hiding in.  “You can stop.”  Of course, you did.

“Really, who are you?  Do I know you?” you asked.

“Yes,” he answered.  His presence was still there.  “Stay away from the book store for 2 days.”  You nodded and walked to Starbucks.  “Don’t order Mocha Frappuccino.”  ‘He knows what I was going order?’ you thought.

“One Iced Caramel Macchiato, please,” you ordered.  The woman nodded.  After a few minutes passed, you got your order and walked out.

“You’re safe from being poisoned,” the voice said.  You looked around and smiled.  This time, you just love it that he saves you from danger.

“Gomawo…whoever you are,” you said and walked home.
