The True Face of the Business

He shuffles around in his seat, not knowing where to place his hands or how to shift his legs so he looks leaner but still manly. Personal image is all too important in this business, a good shirt and tie can make the difference.

Tick tock tick tock

The young man stares at everything in the room, in the small reception he has been sitting for the past ten minutes now. The main office of Choeun Entertainment is small but it's enough to harbor the administrative staff. No trainees are there, as the training facilities are a couple of blocks away; so the place remains quiet, only murmurs and the sound of computer keyboards can be heard from the rooms to the right. Oh, and that clock.

Tick tock tick tock tick tock

His tie is too tight, his dress shirt feels itchy against his skin, and the picture frame on the opposite wall is slightly crooked to the left. He has to ask himself again: Is this a mental torture or a job interview?

Tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock

And that cat clock! Another second of listening to that tick-tock of its and he swears he will...!

"Mr. Kim is ready to see you, Minho-ssi" The secretary chimes in, walking out of the big wooden door behind her desk, with an all too familiar smile.

"Ah. Thank you." He stands swiftly and bows politely, a pleasant grin poised on his lips as he makes his way to the door. Well, here goes nothing.

The meeting starts quickly: hands are shaken, courtesies are dispensed, and seats are taken. Minho seats in front of an older looking man, his small eyes and round glasses make him look like your average ‘ajusshi’. The secretary leaves the room after serving the mandatory tea with a glimpse of proudness in her eyes. Minho bets he knows what she is thinking 'He is so polite. He grew up so well." Hmph.

"So what is this all about?" Minho shoots, straight to the point once he hears the wooden door close. Mr Kim's face shifts, not a single sign of the kind ‘ajusshi’ is left, his wise-looking small eyes become sharp and his marked eyebrows give him a perpetually angry look.

"A girl group?" His dark brown eyes scan the files as quickly as they can, before shooting a contrived look at the older male. "They are going to get wrecked. Your boy group barely...!" 

"That is not your job. The directive considers that launching a girl group could produce a bigger income this time around. We are aware things are hard now, but we have some talented young ladies.” His face turns a bit calmer. “Besides, aren’t things hard for everyone now? Even if you do go to the University”

“They are going to get crushed; do you want me to lie to them or what?”

"You can do whatever you need to do. I will be paying you, isn't that enough?" The young man's mouth remains open, like he is trying to come up with something to shoot back but he closes just seconds after, his shoulders dropping in sync.

"This USB flash drive contains videos of our young talents; I want you to watch them. After that, you can go to the training rooms to see them for yourself" Minho’s hand reaches for the red USB while he stares emotionless at it.

"So I'm getting to choose them? Wasn't this your job?” He looks at Mr. Kim with an arrogant smirk plastered on his perfect face, his eyes now filled with contained hate. “Or you just sit on your office now and answer the phone?"

Mr. Kim's laugh resonates around the office. "You might be wearing a suit and tie now, kid, but you haven't change one bit" His laughter subsides and he returns to his previous dry look. "We already have some people in mind, but some input from you would be nice"

There is a tense silence in the room for a minute, or it could have been an eternity.

"The training rooms... are they still on the same place?"

"I'm glad to have you on board, Manager Minho"
