We’re only lost children, trying to find a friend, trying to find our way back home

We’ll never fall apart, ‘cause we fit together right

We fit together like two pieces of a broken heart

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Thirteen years old Kim Jongin exhales in joy as he looks up over the skies.

He’s more the proud by himself. He didn’t expect his head to remember the escape route in his house – the enormous Kim mansion – because it was like months ago when he caught his brother packing his clothes in a gym bag and ended up being told about his little secret.

“Freedom, dongsaeng. We have everything that every peasant outside there wants, but not freedom.” he remembered Jongdae smiled bitterly at him. That moment he thought his brother was crazy. How could a fifteen years old boy think that he’d survive outside the house? Jongdae just snickered at his lovely little brother before he starts explaining the secret path he always took whenever he wants to escape from the ‘beautiful jail’.

He knows he should never listen to Jongdae because his brother is such a rebel that always makes both his parents suffocated. But now he wants to chant endless ‘thank you’s to him.

He finally sees why Jongdae always escapes from home. Because it doesn’t feel like one. It never felt like one. In such a young age, Jongin could finally understand that home is not just a place where you could come back to and rest in. Home is a place where you could always come back to and feel loved and accepted for who you are, not for the person anyone want you to be. Home is a place where you could drop your insecurities off on the floor and just be yourself. But in Kim mansion he has to always meet up his parent’s expectation – being a good kid, who listens to them since they failed on Jongdae, and being a ‘Kim’ because a ‘Kim’ is always the superior among the others.

It .

So here he is, inhaling the fresh air that he really appreciates after being in the same places everyday; Kim mansion, school, ballet classes, and sometimes high class restaurants. He never thought that being alone in the middle of an empty rarely used street could feel so magnificent. He starts to walk casually, smiling now and then as his eyes roam around the view that surrounds him. He hums happily as the casual walk turns into skipping moves. Autumn breeze kisses his cheeks softly, the brown leaves fall down on him. Creaking sounds could be heard as he steps on some withered leaves on the ground.

When he finally stops and the reality comes back to him, he realized that he’s lost.

Argh, he scratched the back of his neck. But oddly, he doesn’t feel afraid of being lost, being quite far from his house. He just shrugged as he keeps walking. Apparently he’s already in the further area of the neighborhood. The houses are still beautiful and big, but not as big as where he lives. However, one house stood out proudly among the others, being the most big and beautiful. It reminds him of his own house.

He frowned when he found an adult size hole on the wall at the backyard of the house. Hasn’t anyone seen it and cared enough to fix the wall? But he shrugged again and the curiosity gets in him. Who knows it’s an empty house and he could use it as his hiding spot. He giggled as he stepped through the hole, walking through tall grass without caring about getting his legs scratched. He keeps walking and walking until he finally stood on a clearing. He puffed his cheeks, looking up at the two stories house.

He squinted his eyes when he noticed someone on the window at the balcony.

Ah, it still hurts.

Do Kyungmi stares at the bruise on her left arm. The angry mark glares back at her, as if declaring that she’s really doomed in this world.

She had lost track in time since she stepped into her bedroom, having her step mother locking her inside. Well at least she’s not locked in somewhat storeroom. She was eating her apple pie when she accidentally nudged the glass too close to the edge of the table and it fell down on the floor, shattered in pieces. That results her step mother scolding her, grabbing her harshly by her arm and literally dragged her into her bedroom and slapped her for being reckless. So much for the anger management.

She wondered why the witch didn’t become an actress because she has been so good in it. She’s all sweet and caring when her father is around, but she turns into a ruthless monster when she’s alone with her. She was just turned eleven when her father was married again with the witch, and her life turned into some kind of hell ever since. The beautiful little girl Do Kyungmi, being all perfect outside the house but tortured inside. At first she cried because of so many reasons; the wounds, the reality, the fact that her step mother didn’t love her. But as time goes by, she only cries because of the pain on her wounds. Her heart is still hurting too, but she had accepted the fact that her step mother despises her existence.

She shifted her position on the window frame, her favorite spot to waste herself to tears. Her bedroom actually have balcony, but the door to the balcony and the window next to it are locked too. So she could only sit on the window frame, resting her head on the window glass, looking outside at the backyard, the tall grass covering the ground.

However, she frowned when she spotted a boy, maybe around her age, standing down there, staring back at her.

Her eyes followed the boy dashing towards the house like some ninja. She lost him since her sight is limited. But then she gasped loudly when seconds later she found him already climbing up to her balcony, setting himself right in front of the door to her bedroom. The boy stared at her for a while before he also crouched down and sits right next to her, if only the wall and the window don’t exist.

“Who are you?” she whispered at him.

He frowned, not getting what she meant.

When she replied her question with louder voice, the boy grinned. “I am Jongin,” he says, “and you?”

Thankfully the window is not really thick so they could still hear each other’s voices. “I’m Kyungmi. What are you..doing on my balcony?”

“I’m bored and lonely at home.” the Jongin boy shrugged. “Are you upset with me being here?”

Kyungmi blinked at him before she casts her gaze down slowly and shook her head. “No.” she said before she looked up at him. “Please stay.”

A blinding smile painted on Jongin’s plush lips. “So, that means we’re friends, right?”

The girl just nodded.

“Why were you crying?” Jongin asked softly.

A heavy silence hangs before Kyungmi asked back, ignoring the previous question. “How old are you?”

“Thirteen. You?”

“Ah, I’m twelve.”

A mischievous grin formed on Jongin’s face. “Hmm, younger, huh?”

Kyungmi could feel her lips are twitching into a small smile. The boy in front of her is already beautiful, and it gets clearer when he smiles. “Does that mean I have to call you ‘oppa’?”

“I actually like that.” Jongin hummed as he tapped his index finger on his chin.

“But I don’t.”

“Why??”

“There’s only one person in the world I will call ‘oppa’.” Kyungmi answered.

Jongin frowned. Who’s the lucky guy? He really needs to meet that person because –

“He’s my brother. Well, he’s already gone, though.” Kyungmi rested her head on the window glass again. “He was involved in a car crash along with my mother. I was..hmm, eight or nine, back then.”

Eyes widened, Jongin gulped slowly as he stared at the girl. Too much information to take in.

“Kyungsoooppa is the best.” she hums. “He really cares about me a lot. He loves me so much, he says, and he proves it. He never lied to me. Well, sometimes, but because he doesn’t want to worry me.” she inhales before she continues again. “I miss Kyungsoooppa so much.”

Jongin watched with softened eyes as tears starts to roll down the girl’s pale white cheeks. Maybe he doesn’t understand how it feels to miss a person you loved so much with knowing that they won’t come back to you, but his heart wrenched just by watching her suppressing her sobs.

He pressed his right palm against the window glass. Kyungmi looked up to him with teary eyes, her sobs are already died. Then she gazed at the palm on the glass with a confused look. Unconsciously she brought her left hand, pressing her palm against the spot where Jongin’s hand is. His fingers are quite long, making hers looks tiny and fragile. The bright paleness on her skin makes a beautiful contrast with his tan one.

She stared back at him, looking right into his eyes. And maybe that’s when they had sealed a promise.

They’re lost children who meet up and promised silently not to leave each other.

And even after that day, after days of Jongin’s successful attempts to sneak up into Kyungmi’s balcony only to talk about silly things and shares their problems, after daylights of Jongin falling asleep on the same spot with his head rested on the glass right where Kyungmi’s head is also resting, after chances they used to finally meet each other in person, they keep their promise.

Because even when some promises are meant to be broken, some promises are also strong enough to be kept.

Time goes by from the days of falling leaves, it blends to the days where everything is covered in white and cold air seeps through their skins. Then it changes into the days of colorful blooms decorating the streets, and now here they are in the days when the sunlight bathes them, the scent of excitement lingers in the air.

“Why don’t we go somewhere?” Jongin says as he taps his feet on the floor in a random rhythm. Always a habit of his.

Kyungmi blinked at him, sitting across him on the carpeted floor. “Go where?”

“Anywhere you like.” he said. “You’re always stuck in here. Thankfully there’s always me, and finally your step mother gave you the key to open the balcony door. If not, what will you be?”

Sighing heavily, Kyungmi hung her head down. “You are right.”

“So,” Jongin immediately dashes to her, sitting next to her eagerly, “where do you want to go?”

After seconds of thinking, Kyungmi looks up at him. “Beach..?”

“You are right. This place is awesome.”

Somehow they managed to get out of the house, with the help of Kyungmi’s butler. Since the man is already fond of her, he willed to take his Young Lady and her friend to wherever they want to go. So he ended up leaning against the car, watching the two kids playing from far under the sunlight. The boy wears loose t-shirt and navy blue short, while the girl is looking all fairy with her yellow mini dress.

Kyungmi grinned at Jongin before she plays with the sand again.

“What are you doing?” Jongin crouched down, looking at the various sand bumps she had made.

“I was planning to build a sandcastle.” Kyungmi huffs. “But I just can’t imagine a good one and create it.”

Jongin laughed. “Too bad, I can’t build sandcastle either.”

“Kyungsoo oppa used to build it for me.” she says softly, making another sand bump. “He was so good at building sandcastles. But he never had the chance to really teach me how to do it.”

And Jongin hates it. He hates if Kyungmi looks sad when he’s around. He had silently vowed to make the girl smile, even if it means he has to do some silly things. Seeing Kyungmi talking about her deceased brother so sadly twitches his heart.

So he leans down to scoop a handful of sand, placing it in front of him and shaped it until it looked like a hill. He repeated what he did, creating another bump right next to the previous one. He leaned back, sighing at how limited his imagination is. He needs to take another scoop of sand and –

“What is that, Jongin?” Kyungmi asked, owl eyes staring at him.

Jongin blinked back, being unsure of what it is too. He stared at her innocently. “Uh,” he muttered, “s..?”

For seconds Kyungmi looked at him as if he’s some kind of alien before she finally bursts into a cheery laugh, holding her tummy because she couldn’t handle it anymore. She wipes the tears on her face, laughing too much.

“Jongin, you are crazy!” she giggled brightly at him.

And for once, Jongin appreciates his stupidity, because it made her laugh and butterflies to bursts in his stomach as he watches her doing so.

Safely to say, he had found his home in this girl.

However, their one day outing results Jongin being punished for disappearing until night, Kyungmi being scolded by her father and abused by her step mother, and the butler being nearly fired.

They said two different people will be further from each other as they grow up. Even if there was a bond, it tends to loosen away as time goes by.

“Are you mad?”

But in the case of Jongin and Kyungmi, as much as how different they are from each other, they’re already bonded by a string that they made when they first met, thus they don’t go further. They are two different beings, contrast to each other. While Jongin grows from a grinning young boy into a smirking guy with girls drooling over him, Kyungmi grows from a blushing young girl into a porcelain doll that seems too perfect yet fragile at the same time.

“No, I am not. Why would I?”

Jongin, following his brother’s step, starts to spend his night in some random bars with dancing, catching girls in his grasp easily. It’s like pheromone evaporates from his pores that woman could bluntly give their selves to him without hesitation. Kyungmi, being all by herself, builds another tall wall to surround her from any harm that anyone could cause. People around her will always be in awe when they saw her, but they’re afraid to touch her, to approach her.

“Because I haven’t been here for three days straight?”

“Why would I get mad at you because of that?”

It seems like Jongin and Kyungmi are living in different worlds, moving further from each other as they walk in their own paths. But in the end of the day, they find each other again, because they are each other’s sanctuary.

“Come on, if you’re mad, don’t hide it.”

“Okay I am. No, I shouldn’t be. You have your own life, I know it. But Jongin, you’re the only one I have in this world.”

“I know. I’m so sorry.”

No matter how crazy it seems, no matter how unbelievable it is, both of them are too attached with one another. Even though they didn’t realize it yet, they could feel it. Jongin will never feel what he felt by holding Kyungmi’s hand when he ravishes a girl under him roughly, and Kyungmi will always feel a hole inside her heart if Jongin is not around.

“So you’re addicted now? Make out addicted? Pfft.”

“Are you..mad about it?”

“Nah. It’s quite wrong, but I can’t say anything. It happens to some people. Maybe it will fade away someday.”

“Well.”

Maybe Jongin and Kyungmi is not the best match in this world. Maybe both of them are too different from one another. Maybe they look ridiculous together, because how could a person who seems rough and hot-blooded stays with a delicate being who seems so fragile?

“Will you do those things to me someday? Honest.”

“No, Princess. Unless you asked me for it.”

“I am not sure if I will ever ask you for it.”

“Let’s see then.”

But at least, in the end of the day, they have each other.

“So, where’s Jongin?”

“How would I know?”

“But you’re his best friend, right?”

“Doesn’t mean I know everything he does.” Kyungmi says flatly, voice soft as feather. “Besides, he has a better life out there than to be stuck with me.”

Sehun chuckled at how the petite girl in front of him is half spacing out and half conversing with him. He takes a moment to enjoy the sight. By staying still like this, Do Kyungmi is sure a living doll; petite body, pale white and smooth skin, round eyes widening, jet black hair falls gracefully on her shoulder with a neat bang covering her forehead. But once she moves, she’s a clumsy and innocent girl.

Oh Sehun is the only person who broke the walls that Kyungmi had built for years, and also the only one who had seen past the demeanor Jongin always put on. Being the only one who knows the real relationship between Jongin and Kyungmi, sometimes Sehun feel sorry for the girl. He could tell that Kyungmi cares for Jongin a lot as much as Jongin cares about her, if not more. But somehow she had made Jongin promised not to stay close to her in school when they entered the same high school. Maybe because they’re two different being; Kim Jongin the popular guy who ever had at least three girls from a class under him once, and Do Kyungmi the teacher’s favorite who doesn’t really have friends except for OhSehun the cold and handsome captain of school’s basketball team.

The first time Sehun found out the true relationship between them, he had to stay still with eyes widened just so he could believe what is happening in front of him. It was around September in their second year in high school. Sehun was visiting her because the teacher informed she was sick and resting in home. After meeting her step mother who seemed to be nice – but later Sehun knew the true nature of the witch –, Sehun went upstairs and knocked on her door. When he got no response, he chose to be bold and opened the door.

Then he saw Kyungmi on the bed, cuddling with none other than Kim Jongin.

The school’s Casanova ended up explaining to him that they were already friends since he was thirteen and Kyungmi was twelve. Four years of friendship – five by now – apparently had allowed Jongin to hug her and steal a kiss on her cheek. And Sehun, being the smartass, only said one thing to him.

“If you have a precious girl to cherish, why did you have to go around playing with worthless ones and leave them cold in the end?”

It struck right into Jongin’s heart, although he didn’t really stop after that.

“Sehun,” Kyungmi called softly.

“Hm?”

“I’m going now. My father called.” she said as she stood up.

Sehun also stands up, fixing his shirt. “I’ll take you home.”

Kyungmi blinked at him. “Wow, you’re so nice. But no thank you. Wouldn’t want to see her, right?”

But Sehun just grinned at her as he pat her shoulder gently. “Nah, better to see her but sure that you’re safe than to keep wondering where you are.”

Yep, OhSehun also cares about Do Kyungmi a lot. But he just knows that he doesn’t have the chance to sneak into her heart.

“Man, never thought you’d be more successful than me.”

Jongin chuckled before he gulped down his mineral water. In front of him is Jongdae, smirking at his younger brother in proud. It’s quite touching for him, to know that Jongin looks up to him a lot. Even the way he plays with ladies. At first he want to warn the younger that he doesn’t need to be like that, but seeing how his little brother could make any girl drools, he just thought that Jongin had the natural talent to be the playboy he is.

“But I think..”Jongin hums, “I think I want to stop.”

Jongdae frowned. “Dude, I just praised you and now you say you’re going to stop?”

“It’s just – “

“That little Do girl, I know.” Jongdae rolled his eyeballs. “She has always been the first priority for you. Duh.”

“Sorry hyung.” Jongin grinned. “I’m not as heartless as you.”

Instead of being offended, Jongdae just shrugged, stabbing his chocolate cake in process. “Sometimes being heartless is the thing that makes you strong.”

“But for my case, I can’t be heartless. I have her.” Jongin replies quietly.

“That’s the difference between us, bro.” Jongdae smiles gently at him. “You have someone you love so much. I simply don’t.”

Kyungmi stared at the grinning person outside the window with pursed lips. She walks towards the balcony door and opened it, and as usual, as the days and nights before, the person steps in through it. Cold air seeps from the gape, sending some stubborn snowflakes to float gracefully into her bedroom. She hurriedly closed the door.

“Where were you all day?” she asked politely and calmly.

“Hanging around with Jongdaehyung.”Jongin pinched her cheek gently. “Sorry, Princess.”

She frowned before swatting his hand away – despite being a little bit weak to do so. She walks towards her bed and throw herself on it. Soon enough Jongin joined her, tangling their legs together.

Three years ago, Kyungmi’s heart beats so fast when he did this. But now she just stared at him casually.

“You’re not going to do me like those..hm, girls, right?” she asked softly, although her eyes are daring him to move.

Jongin smiled, shaking his head. “Not until you want me to do it, Princess.” he said, running his thumb softly on her cheek. “And you don’t have to ask me that everytime I’m on your bed.”

“Just to make sure.”Kyungmi chuckled, ignoring the faint smell of cigarette that comes along with the latter’s breath. “I can’t always predict what’s in your mind, Jongin-ah.”

He just pulls her into his arms as a respond. They spend a few minutes in silence, a comfortable one. They could hear their breaths falls into the same rhythm. And Kyungmi loves it when they’re close like this, because she could smell his masculine scent, making sure to herself that even if many girls had Jongin for a night, in the end of the day she’s the one who has Jongin all the time.

“Hey,” she called lazily, “I know where we could go and never feel let down again.”

It has been a random topic between them, about how they want to escape from their lives, leaving for a place where they could live a new life. A life with no one to ruin their hearts.A life with no one to break them so easily. A life when there are just two of them, cherishing each other.

Jongin chuckled. “Silly girl.” he whispered before he caresses her hair. “Where is that?”

“Paradise!”

“.. paradise?” Jongin frowned.

She nodded eagerly. “Hm-hm!”

Humming softly, Jongin lets his eyes wander around her room, then back at her. “Isn’t that the place we will be in after we die?”

Kyungmi blinked at him. “Well, I didn’t think that far.”

Jongin laughs cheerily in response. He leaned back a bit so he could clearly see her face. “Then, how does a paradise look to you?”

Tilting her head a bit, a soft smile formed on her lips. “Like..beach?”

“Hm-hm, beach would do.”

“Just imagine the sands here and there, and oh, the water! The ocean, it will be sparkly under the sunlight!” she says excitedly.

Chuckling, Jongin pinched the bridge of her nose. “You’re too cute to be true, Princess.”

Princess, Kyungmi thought as she contemplated with the name more. She hummed again before a grin breaks out. “We can build sandcastles in the paradise, Jong, maybe then I’d be good at that,” she said eagerly, “I’ll be the Queen, and you’ll be my King!”

“Wow, you’re upgrading your nickname?” Jongin giggled. This girl couldn’t get any cuter.

“I’m being kind hearted to give you such a grand name, Jongin.” she playfully rolled her eyeballs.

Once again, Jongin pulls her into his arms, securing the girl inside. “Yep, we’ll build sandcastles.” he whispered ever so sweetly. “You’ll be the Queen and I’ll be your King.”

Kyungmi just wish it could be true.

“Or maybe the Servant.” she whispered back.

“Tsk, you’re a meanie.”

To Kyungmi, Jongin is like a hot summer breeze.

She didn’t like summer at first. It was summer when she had her first fight with her brother. It was summer when she had her first upset cry because her father had ditched his promise to watch the school recital she was playing in. It was also summer when her brother and mother insisted to go out to order a special cake for her birthday and end up involved in a car accident. It was summer two years after that when her father married the witch. It was always summer when she felt so alone, because in her birthdays which is in the beginning of the season, she felt like the loneliest person in the world with no one to comfort her.

So she prefer autumn and winter. Somehow the two seasons understand her. They mourn together with her. The withered leaves fall onto her, assuring her that she’s not really alone. The whiteness from the snow that covered the ground comforts her, telling her that dull black is not the only color she could have in her life. She came to despise colorful seasons like spring and summer. They’re too bright, blinding her from the reality. They made their bright colors seem so contrast with her dull life.

But Kim Jongin came like a hot summer breeze melting the coldness in the chilly autumn air. He seeps into her life, radiating the warmth that she never thought she could feel again. She always thanked the heavens for Jongin stumbling upon her window years ago. It’s like Jongin is an angel who was sent from the skies to end her lonely days. As cheesy as it sounds, it’s how Kyungmi thinks about him.

So she starts to believe again that summer is a beautiful season, that because it’s colorful and bright, she could see an angel with invisible wings spreading widely to take her hand and take her into another world, where she could feel like she’s the most precious being in the universe.

Whenever it’s autumn, she’d think about how Kim Jongin came into her life. Whenever it’s summer, she’d think about how Kim Jongin gives her warmth.

Shortly, Jongin dominated both the bright side and dull side of her life.

It’s been five years since the first time Jongin made his way to Kyungmi. Therefore, he had known for a pretty long time about how Mr. Do’s second wife treated her step daughter. He often will find Kyungmi walking into the class cringing slightly as she does, and he will find out that her mother had just beaten her before she came to school. And often he will be furious about it, but Kyungmi will show that angelic smile of hers and tell him that she’s fine, that she’s already used to it, that she only laughed after the witch disappeared from her sight. She never really told him how the witch tortured her in details. She just said that she had a rough morning, or the witch is being witch again.

However Jongin only know about the truth now, when he found her on the doorstep in front of his apartment.

The girl is crouched down, hugging her knees while she trembled. She’s dressed in school uniform, but judging by her presence here, he knows she had no plan of going to school today. He immediately dashed to her and crouched down too.

“Kyungmi??” he grabbed her gently by her upper arms and shook them carefully. “Do Kyungmi, look at – “

When she looked up to him, his breath almost stopped. Tears are streaming down her face mercilessly, and there’s this bruise right below her left eye. A twin scratch planted on her right cheek. There she is again, beautiful but broken. Brokenly beautiful.

“W-what the hell happened to you??” Jongin trembled as he brought the girl into standing position. The girl is in a weak state, so he lifted her in bridal style instead and brings her inside his apartment, the place he had been living in since two years ago. The place she will go to whenever she felt overwhelmed.

After putting her down on the couch, Jongin takes in the sigh in front of him. Apparently she had some scratches and red marks on her legs. He still doesn’t know about her arms because it’s still covered with the uniform. He was about to go to the bathroom to grab a towel when she caught him by his left wrist.

“J-jongin,” her voice is hoarse, “t-take me away, p-please, take me away f-from here,”

“What?” Jongin asked, taken aback, “what are you saying?”

“I – I hate it here!” she starts to tremble again. “I hate this town, this city, please, I don’t want to be anywhere near the house, please, take me somewhere else – “

“Kyungmi, calm down first, you need – “

“I need to get out of here!!” she shrieks at him.

Jongin is clearly taken aback. Never in his experience with her had that she ever raised her voice on him. Never did she lose herself into screaming and looking so frustrated like this. Which means, that the girl had enough. Maybe she couldn’t bear with the the life has been giving her anymore.

So all that Jongin could think about is to grab two pair of jackets, wearing one of them quickly before he wrapped Kyungmi with another one. The girl looks up at him, eyes gleaming in desperation and hope.

“I’ll take you away.” he whispered to her before he kissed her forehead fondly. “We’ll leave this place.”

He grabbed his motorcycle key and two helmets, before he dragged her out of his apartment.

They’re finally settled in a hotel, thirty five minutes away from the city. Ignoring the critical gazes everyone throws at them, Jongin booked a room for two nights and paid it with his debit card. After everything’s done, he immediately brought Kyungmi to the reserved room, locking the door afterwards.

He placed her carefully on the bed, stripping the jacket easily from her since it’s too big for her size. And that’s when she starts to cry again.

“Princess, please,” Jongin hushed her, wiping her tears away with his thumb, “don’t cry anymore, please.”

After a while, she finally calmed down again. Jongin sighs in relief to know that she’s finally in her sense again, but that’s where he got it quite wrong.

He never expected the girl to look up at him with blank yet somehow determined eyes. “Jongin,”

“Yes?”

She blinks at him a couple times.

“ me.”
