Wonderwall

Hakyeon missed his Algebra class that day. Saying that he was sick was what he told his lecturer. Slowly walking to the Infirmary, he couldn’t stop the ache he felt in his heart.

Duh, I’m Cha Hakyeon, I don’t freaking cry.

He had to take a few steps more towards the infirmary, he halted his steps and leaned his shoulders to the cold window.

The hallway was indeed quiet. Everyone was in their classes.

But there he was, Cha Hakyeon balling his hand a fist, and oh for anything’s sake he wanted to punch the window and break the glass, and let his own hands bleed, and probably would rather die from the loss of blood.

Where’s your pride? Where’s the Cool Cha Hakyeon? The Cool Cha Hakyeon doesn’t even need to be bothered by just a mere presence of a girl.

Now, please, just get off from my head.

I don’t want to remember you anymore.

I don’t want to be remembered by you either.

I don’t want to break you anymore.

And I don’t want you to make me this broken, ever again.

Eunyoung slowly traced her fingers on the piano keys. Oh, how she gonna miss this room.

She sighed audibly and buried her face on her palm. Not so long after, hiccups were heard, and her shoulders were shuddering.

Eunyoung broke down.

Her tears became uncontrollable, and it’s like a mini waterfall. Her world collided. She felt her fingers were trembling, and she just couldn’t stop herself from crying—really bad. She hated that guy so bad. So bad, that she regretted walking into the soccer field that day.

She cried for a good 10 minutes and eventually felt tired.

Slowly, she put her fingers on the piano keys and began playing a song.

Ode to Joy.

Slowly, very slowly…

Her fingers were still trembling.

Each note pierced right through her heart.

Each note reminded her about painful memories she doesn’t want to remember.

Each note brought much hatred towards the guy.

But she just couldn’t stop playing.

Because, wasn’t this song supposed to bring happiness?

Eunyoung messed up the notes and ended up hitting some ugly and random keys.

God, I’ve never known that love can be this hurtful.

God, why do I have to fall for him?

God, why do I have to be this broken? Just because of this guy?

Why am I such a weak, worthless, ugly crybaby?

I wish I knew this since the beginning.

“Welcome,” the shopkeeper greeted. Hakyeon bowed shortly before entering deeper to the small café. His eyes searched for his brunette friend—Minhyuk, but he spotted no one else besides Eunyoung, who was sitting alone on the corner of the café. Thanks for the bell that rings above the door whenever somebody opens it, Eunyoung hastily looked at the new comer and soon widened her eyes in disbelief. Panic, Hakyeon searched for his phone and rapidly texted Minhyuk.

                ‘Where the are you’

In less than 1 minute, Minhyuk replied his text.

‘Go ing talk to her, you dumbface, I was only playing my role as a cameo of Wonshik’s plan here’

Kim Wonshik. Hakyeon thought as he mentally said a train of curses towards that name.

He decided to just get out from the café but then he thought deeply. Am I going to leave things unsettled like this? Is she going to be in her misunderstandings like this? Am I going to walk away without telling her anything?

At least I’ve to tell her something.

Something.

Then I could die in peace.

Hakyeon then turned around. He saw Eunyoung was playing with her fingers rather awkwardly and kept her long strawberry-dyed hair hid her face. Hakyeon sighed deeply and took steady steps towards the table.

“Hey,” NICE TRY. “What’re you doing here alone?” Only a mere greeting, then you’ll say goodbye Cha Hakyeon, you wouldn’t want to see her face anymore longer right? It wouldn’t be funny if you end up crying in front of her.

Eunyoung chose not to reply. She was still shocked by her own words before. And yes, she was still shocked by the presence of her number one hatred person beside her. She looked at Hakyeon once and ditched her a second after.

Okay, I deserved that, didn’t I? Awkwardly, he asked, “C-can I sit here?” Duh, you’re stuttering now, Cha Hakyeon?

Still, Eunyoung didn’t answer. She even thought of killing herself.

Mentally rolling his eyes, Hakyeon did a monologue, “I take that as a yes.” He took an uncomfortable seat in front of Eunyoung and gave an uneasy glare towards the younger.

“Why are you alone?” asked the guy shamelessly.

Sighing, Eunyoung replied, Because you weren’t here with me “I’m actually here because Wonshik sunbae asked me to. He told me to meet him here but it turns out to be a kind of prank, so I guess I’m leaving now.”

Eunyoung got up from her seat and walked away—not before Hakyeon took a grip on her wrist. Eunyoung turned her head and gave a hatred look towards Hakyeon—and it’s piercing his heart so damn bad. Eunyoung hastily shook his hands off.

“What?”

Eunyoung, do you hate me this much now?

“Can we talk?”

“There’s nothing else to talk,” Eunyoung looked away, tried so hard not to cry.

Wait, aren’t I supposed to be the one who’s at fault? Why am I ditching him now? I’m the one who’s supposed to beg and plead for his forgiveness, not the way around, right?

But, duh, please Cha Hakyeon, you’re the one who’s confusing me. Please don’t be kind to me, you’re confusing me.

“You’re the one who’s confusing me now, do you know that?”

Do you like me?

“Look, I’m…” Hakyeon—mentally—face-palmed. How he wanted to just merge himself to the wooden floor and disappear right that moment. “Please, just a minute?”

Eunyoung scanned the embarrassing side of Hakyeon carefully. Falling back to the earth, Eunyoung slowly nodded, “Okay.”

It is so hard not to fall for this guy.

And I’d better not to leave things unsaid, right?

Hakyeon felt uneasy on his seat. He’s not here to be embarrassed, he’s not here to stuttered, and instead, he’s here to have Minhyuk treat him a plate of apple pie.

Not to see Eunyoung. You know how unprepared he was.

“I’d better go first,” Eunyoung bravely said.

Hakyeon looked up to Eunyoung’s eyes—with Eunyoung quickly looked away. “Oh, o-okay.”

“The thing that I was going to tell you on that day is…”

Thump-thump-thump...

“Seyong oppa is actually my cousin.”

The guy’s heart exploded. His face reddened. His jaw dropped. His eyes widened.

His pride crumbled.

“Your… Cousin?” He asked carefully. Eunyoung nodded shyly, “Yes he is. I actually wanted to tell you about this a lot sooner bu—Hakyeon sunbae?”

Hakyeon covered his face with his big palms. His breathing grew uneven. Muttering secret cursing words under his breath, his words became more incoherent each second.

I’m even jealous with her own cousin.

“What’s wrong with you?” Eunyoung asked and tried to remove Hakyeon’s hands from his own face. “Your cousin,” Again, the guy repeated in disbelief.

“Great. I wasted so many times not talking to you just because I’m jealous with your cousin.”

Eunyoung couldn’t help but to chuckle. “Y-you’re jealous?” Hakyeon looked away and didn’t answer. “But I thought you like Ellin—” “We’re just friends. Wonshik’s just blabbering about me with Ellin because she’s the captain of our cheering team, and we’re pretty close. Moreover she has a boyfriend.”

Soon, the most beautiful smile Hakyeon had ever seen crept to Eunyoung’s clear face.

How I miss that smile, stupid.

Hakyeon’s lips twitched upwards in reply.

There he goes again, smiling shamelessly cool like that.

Both of them were in silence. No one would want to start a conversation. Because heck, they’re just dumbly in love with each other.

Hakyeon cleared his throat, “Eunyoung.”

Eunyoung, who was busy stirring her glass of lemon tea looked up, and her heart started to drum faster. “Yes?”

“There’s one more thing that I need to know.”

“Can I call you my girlfriend now?”

Eunyoung covered and felt some unnecessary heat radiating from her cheeks.

Hakyeon looked away—yep, he just couldn’t control himself from squirming—and soon smiled to himself.

It took Eunyoung a good 2,8 minutes to finally answer her favorite sunbae’s question—just with a short nod.

Both of them smiled in triumph. Their hearts exploded into colorful confetti, and it felt like the world stopped moving. Hakyeon could only see Eunyoung and Eunyoung could only see Hakyeon.

Love is stupid.

Isn’t it?

“I’ll call you mine from now on,” the guy continued, “Until forever.”

"Seeing the guy is you, I'm not sure we'll last forever," Eunyoung replied sarcastically.

"What do you mean by that!?"

"See? Our first fight," the younger—who seemed to be older—chuckled.

Hakyeon couldn't help but to chuckle too. "Alright, just don't look at anyone else, because I'm not gonna be cute when I'm jealous."

"But you just admitted that you're jealous, that's cute enough for me."

Hakyeon's face burnt.

“You should thank me, pal.”

“You piece of .”

The End.
