The Book

The Book

[Under the shade of a tall Maple tree with falling leaves, a boy whose name is Chan is sitting on his wheelchair as he’s reading a small, red book when suddenly a girl named Jiah approaches him with a big smile on her face.]

JIAH: Hi! [She greets him warmly then sits down on the bench near his wheel chair. Chan looks at her and smiles back]

CHAN: Well, hi there!

JIAH: What are you reading?

CHAN: Ah, it’s called ‘Memories’.

JIAH: I see. [She pauses for a while] Should we play a game?

CHAN: W-what game?

JIAH: A guessing game.

CHAN: Sounds fun, alright! [Excitement is on his face]

JIAH: Well, I’ll try to guess the story of that book.

CHAN: Ohh cool! What’ll be the prize? I mean, what do you want if you guess it right?

JIAH: Well, can you just promise to believe what I’m gonna say once I guessed it right? [Chan’s happy face turns to an anxious look]

JIAH: Hey, don’t worry. I’m not a bad person!

CHAN: Well, it’s not like that. Just kinda.. eerrr… wondering what it would be. [He chuckles]

JIAH: Great! So should I start now?

CHAN: Sure!

JIAH: Where’s your promise first? [There’s hesitation on Chan’s face but he chooses to nod after sometime.]

CHAN: I-I promise. I promise to believe whatever you’ll gonna say.

JIAH: There you go. [She gives him a wide smile] That book is about the boy’s life story before he lost his memories [Chan looks blank] The boy stated on the book that he’s suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Uhm, it’s actually more on his confessions to his fiancée about his love for her and about his disease.

CHAN: W-wow [he looks at her with mix emotions]

JIAH: By the looks of your face, it seems like I got it so right!

CHAN: Well I guess, you’ve read this book already. [He closes the book and stares at her]

JIAH: Honestly, I wanted to, but I can’t. [She looks up at the sky while Chan’s eyes are full of questions while staring at her]

JIAH: Hey don’t look at me like that.

CHAN: You’re not even looking at me, so how can you can you say that I’m looking at you like—

JIAH: I just know. [She answers in a low tone as she stares back at him with watery eyes]

CHAN: Well then, are you some kind of a fortune-teller? [Jiah ignores him and laugh]

JIAH: How I wish I really am…. [She sighs]

CHAN: You’re right.. [He said in a serious manner as he gently rubs the cover of  the red book with his hand.]

JIAH: What? Spill it out. Tell me.

CHAN: Now this is becoming creepy. Tell you what? How’d you know I want to say something?

JIAH: It looks so obvious.

CHAN: I said you’re right.. [Jiah gives him a blank look, he shrugs] you guessed it right. [He then smiles at her, but she responds with a sad look.]

JIAH: Well then, should I claim my prize now?

CHAN: O-oh! Y-yes ofcourse..

JIAH: You’ll believe everything I’ll say right? [He nods in reply] Can I tell you a story then? [he nods again] You’ll believe that everything written on that book was real, right? [It takes a while before he finally agrees. She continues the story.]

There’s this girl who approached a man one day. She thought he’s good looking and all. The funny thing is that, the man was actually her neighbour but she never had a chance to talk to him. That day when she saw him at the library, reading a book, she slowly walked towards him and asked if she could take the seat in front of him, and luckily he said okay. They started a conversation about the book the man was reading. Few minutes passed and they looked as if they’ve known each other for years while laughing and chatting comfortably even though the librarian tried to stop them few times.

CHAN: Are you actually telling me the story of this book?

JIAH: Then months passed, they found each other dating then they turned into boyfriend-girlfriend, into being engaged.. [She closes her eyes and tries to control her breathing]

CHAN: Hey, you know what, this is getting boring as I already know the story, though I’m reading it again and again because it happened to be my favourite one and I have it with  me all the time [she laughs softly, he shakes his head while looking at her as if she’s losing her mind]

CHAN: I have to go now..

JIAH: Yeah.. you promised you gonna believe what I’ll say [there, the boy stops from pushing himself away from her with his wheelchair, he turns back to see her again just to be shock seeing her crying]

JIAH: Will you believe me if I’ll say that.. that the woman in that book is… m-me? (Shock rules Chan’s face.] You promised you’ll believe me, right? [He nods unconsciously] Yeah.. I’m the woman in that book whom he said he loves so much.. The woman he said he wanted to be with when he gets old. The woman he confessed to about his freaking disease. [sobs louder]

CHAN: I-I’m sorry t-to [she shakes her head]
