Daehyun was numb.
A soulless vessel that somehow is in existence.
He feels nothing.
Like a toy abandoned by its owner.
A fake smile is plastered on his face everyday,
but people never took notice of it.
Daehyun wasn't always like this.
Daehyun used to be a lovely boy.
With golden hair,
and eyes full of life.
He was a lovely child;
everyone adored him.
His voice was a gift from God himself.
Whenever he sang,
a melodious aura rang across the town,
and everyone became joyous.
Then one day,
Daehyun met Youngjae.
Youngjae was a kid who lived across street.
He had chubby cheeks and mocha hair.
He was not like Daehyun;
in fact he was completely the opposite of him.
Instead of playing with the other child as Daehyun would,
he spent his time indoors reading.
His family was nice,
but they always seemed somewhat distant from him.
As if he was nothing but a stranger.
Although the two were like this
they grew quite close with each other.
Eventually,
they developed a fluttering feeling for each other.
A thumping emotion,
known as love.
They confessed under an old oak,
with a simple card amd flowers.
The two kept their secret relationship
through high school and college.
And so when they were old enough,
they set out from their parents' embrace.
They moved out
off to another land.
Daehyun and Youngjae got married.
The wedding was filled with joy,
as church bells happily rang to the tune of the celebration.
Although their parents knew that they had a different bond than others,
they accepted it with glad tears in their eyes.
After the party,
they drove home.
Another car was making its way down the road,
with a drunk man inside
when it suddenly swerved
and crashed into their car.
A few minutes later
sirens filled the void of silence.
Flashing red lights and beacons shone
as ambulances drove off with the three.
The driver was pronouced dead at the scene.
Youngjae was still faintly breathing when he arrived at the hospital.
The nurses and doctors tried as much as they could
to save the poor two,
but alas fate said no,
and Youngjae was also pronounced dead a few hours later.
The funeral was sad
with mournful chimes of the bells
as family and friends bidded their goodbyes to him
and cried solemnly as well.
The next few days in the hospital were spent with Daehyun in a coma.
And when he finally woke up,
he was no longer the same.
The doctor asked if he could remember his name.
He spoke a soft "No.".
They showed pictures of his family.
His eyes showed no signs of familiarity.
Finally they showed him a photo of Youngjae.
He hesitated.
Another unfamiliar shake of the head.
The doctor diagnosed him with permanent amensia.
When he was finally well,
he left the hospital.
Several years past,
and although Daehyun never really regained his memory back
he would seldom take walks to Youngjae's grave
where he would sit there for hours
staring at the ancient gravestone.
Some say this was fate's way of regretting,
others say it was instinct.
Either way,
he still was never sure.
Daehyun is numb.
Like a lifeless robot that functions without morality.
A bird that has lost its sense of direction and way.
And although people say he could never remember who he was before,
maybe his memories were eradicated...
or they were merely locked away.
