UNDER THE SAME SKY.   A long time ago, someone told me that the amount of time in the universe is constant. If not used in one meeting it is used in another.   I remember asking her if there is a scientific explanation for that. Looking at the faraway sky and smiling as she tilts her head, she said, “None, but it is always bound to happen.” I thought very hard of what she said for days. After contemplating, I find myself agreeing with her.  Maybe we didn’t meet in our past life, but here we are now, under the same sky.   With that, I knew and felt that she was so special.   Moon Hee Jin wanted to know more things, to go to faraway places—but I, I just wanted to be with her.     HOW WE MET AND OTHER STORIES.   Whenever people ask me how we met, my answer would be: I tell them what we felt that time— that we were both in love.   The first time I saw Moon Hee Jin at the bus station near our school, at Yonsei University, I can say it was love at first sight. I was very very smitten by her.   And she was too.   She was very much in love as well—with her ex-boyfriend, Kim Jong Hyun.   She was standing at the waiting shed and unknowingly, we were walking towards her direction. Jong Dae and I are discussing our final paper. We stop our tracks and conversation when we heard some heartbreaking sobs.   Jong Dae peeks at the girl in front of us. She was scratching her eye and she was shaking uncontrollably.  “Hee Jin?”   They say when you meet the love of your life, time stops, and that’s true.   When she turns her head, despite of her eyes bloodshot, I was smitten. My heart was doing some crazy sequence of somersault and literally the background became blur and she’s all I can see that’s clear. It was alarming and not cool.   “Jong Dae?” Before he could say anything, this girl—Hee Jin went closer, wrapped her arms around him, buried her face to his neck and sobs came in continuous.  “Jong Hyun broke up with me.”   “He what?!”   “H-he said he was already seeing someone else and that he was no longer in love with me. I—Jong Dae, please take me home. I don’t want to stay here.”   From the years that Jong Dae and I have been friends, I have never seen him like this—this furious. He removes his coat and draped it over across her shoulder. “Hyung, we’ll go ahead now. I’ll catch up with you and the gang later.” I nodded. “By the way, Hee Jin this is Lu Han, he’s one of our friends, he’s in the same class with Min Seok hyung.”   “Hi.” She says, voice cracking a little. She was wiping her eyes trying to act brave.  “I’m sorry for interrupting you and Jong Dae—”   “No, it’s okay—”   “—But we need to go. See you around.”   “Yes.”   Jong Dae and Hee Jin walked pass by me, until they turn left and disappear within my eye range. I pull out my phone and call Chan Yeol.   Damn it. I think I’m in love.     CURIOUSITY KILLED THE CAT.   “Yah, Lu Han hyung where’s Kim Jong Dae?” Baek Hyun asked, once I reach place we always hang out—The Ritz.   “He was out with this girl—”   “Ooh. I bet he’s on a date with Ah Ra again.”   “Psyched.” Chan Yeol gave him a high-five.   “No. Not her. Her name is Jin something. Hee Jin?” (Of course I knew her name. I just like to pretend I forgot so I wouldn’t be tagged as a creep.)   “Oh yeah. That’s his girl best friend and I am his male best friend.”   “What?” Chan Yeol said in high pitched tone. “I am Jong Dae’s best friend.”   Baek Hyun shook his head and make face. “Anyway, what’s with Hee Jin and Jong Dae?”   I sit down on the couch and Yi Xing handed me a drink. “From what I heard, her boyfriend broke up with her.”   “They what?!” Baek Hyun shrilled.   Chan Yeol roars in evil laughter, exclaiming, “I won! I won! I won the bet! Pay us Baek. You owe me and Jong Dae 30, 000 won each.”   “Huh?” I asked confused and look at Yi Xing. “What’s going on?”   “Jong Dae and Chan Yeol made a bet with Baek Hyun when Hee Jin and Jong Hyun started dating. They didn’t like him for her, while Baek Hyun supported their relationship because Kim Jong Hyun is his sunbae.”   “Oh. I see.” I say. Then as I look at them, (Baek Hyun getting his money from his wallet, Chan Yeol looking like a hungry dog awaiting for his meal) I thought, why do I hang out with these idiots? I shook my head and went straight to make a follow up questions. “So… Where does she study?”   “At Yonsei too.”   “That makes sense. But how come I don’t see her around or even hang out with us?”   “Three words: Kim Jong Hyun.” Chan Yeol spats out.   “What is her major?”   “Computer Engineering.”     I nodded at Baek Hyun’s answer and carry on to what they were talking about earlier before I came in. But there was a thought I couldn’t shake away—where the hell is the computer engineering department? Which building?!   God. I’m crazy.     THIRTEEN ROUNDS— ONE | YELLOW   On our first date, it wasn’t your typical two single people at Seoul who is at the getting to know you stage. It was more of group date. I could be devastated by this but I was not. Just seeing her present with us was enough.   I was invited by Chan Yeol to watch their band’s—Two-bit Cadillac—weekly gig at the Tavern’s.
