Chapter 36

JUST Common Sense

Double Update! Woohoo! I owe it to you guys!

No One's POV

The breeze felt amazingly nice tonight. He didn’t mind waiting for her in this wind. If anything, he had rather wait for her than be in the building, because inside, even though there was enough room for one to call their own bubble, to him, it felt too cramped. Perhaps one can call him claustrophobic or can say that he plainly just hated being near to so much people in a place, but to Kris, that was the problem for this case.

For Kris, he never did like places with so much people around him. He was an independent person. He didn’t necessarily depend on anyone else to make a living. Even though his parents were always there to support him if he ever needed them, Kris never really looked to them for help. He was always one to do things by himself.

Even so, the problem wasn’t his surroundings. The reason for him wanting to be out here rather than inside was because he needed fresh air anyways. He hadn’t been feeling well since this morning, and he had thought the feeling would go away later, but now, it bothered him like no there was no tomorrow. Fresh air was exactly what he needed right now anyways, so he was glad Luhan had told him to wait in the front entrance for Soyoung.

He examined all of the people attending the business event. People from all over were dressed in expensive clothing and jewelries. Some chatting happily as they entered, and some greeted each other.

He raised his brows in wonder. Were his parents going to attend this event?

Kris hadn’t been speaking to his parents lately. Even they didn’t know about him being here, but that was fine, because he had planned it that way. If they do happen to come and find out that their son had attended, it would be no big deal anyways. All in all, Kris didn’t care.

He quietly hummed a song as people continued to enter. It was only then when he spotted a blue Nissan Skyline entering the driveway that he stood up and stopped with the humming. The car made its way to the entrance as Kris walked towards it and opened he passenger’s seat for the female he had been waiting for.

With gratefulness, Soyoung stepped out before Kris closed it shut. Luhan rolled down the window as Kris bent down to look at him.

“Stick with her. She’s not good with speaking or understanding Chinese,” Luhan informed the tall male. “I won’t be there until 7:30, so if you guys need anything, just call me.”

“You haven’t told me why you’ll be coming late,” Kris spoke with a monotone voice. He really didn’t care much about anything right now.

“I’ll tell you later,” Luhan waved it off. “I’m going.”

And with that, he sped off, leaving Kris with the female.

He glanced at her before breaking out into a gentle smile. “You look beautiful tonight, Soyoung.”

It wasn’t usual that he would compliment a female, but it didn’t hurt to do so once in a while, especially when it was no lie at all. Kris was quite surprised by her sudden change, but he wouldn’t show it.

“Thanks,” she replied with a nervous smile. “You look nice, too.”

“Should we go in?” He held out a hand before Soyoung gratefully took it into hers with a nod. “Don’t be nervous,” Kris chuckled lightly. He has never seen anyone be so nervous about a business event before. Luhan didn’t count. “It’s not as bad as you think it is. As long as I’m with you, nothing bad will happen.”

Soyoung nodded, grateful for his words. She was glad that Luhan had friends like him. Like Kris. Together, they made their way into the building, hand in hand.

“Did Luhan tell you where he’s going?” Kris asked, loud enough for her to hear. With all of the business men speaking to one another made it a very noisy environment, and with his condition for tonight, Kris did not want to be yelling just so that the female by his side can hear him.

“He didn’t,” she muttered, hoping he would be able to hear her. “He said he had something to get to. That’s all he told me.”

Kris nodded. It wasn’t he expected a direct answer from her anyways. He didn’t know how close Luhan and Soyoung were, but by the way Luhan treats Soyoung, Kris can be assured that Soyoung was someone Luhan could trust. It wasn’t just any time that Luhan would let a female near him the way Soyoung was.

“He always does whatever he wants without consulting others, I swear,” Kris muttered with a shake of his head. “He’s a jerk, isn’t he?”

Soyoung raised her brows, taken aback his question. She wasn’t expecting such a question from anyone, especially Kris himself. There had been a few times in which she had spoken to him since the day she met him, which was back in the summer. She’d be truthful, it wasn’t awkward to be with the guy, and she was actually comfortable enough to be stuck with him in a room alone if that ever happened, but it wasn’t like they were close. Kris wasn’t usually straight forward with things. He was the type who liked to hit around the bush. From past conversations, and with the others’ given information to her, Soyoung knew this about Kris. To hear him ask such a straight forward question surprised her.

Nonetheless, she smiled sheepishly. It was as if he saw right through her. She nodded, seeing no need to lie. “Yeah, he really is at times. He’s a huge pain in the .” She brought her hands together with a smile. “But I guess like all of you, I got used to it.”

Kris gave a side smile. “Don’t spoil him too much. We guys only spoil him because we’re guys. He may be older than me, but I spoil him more than he spoils me. The rest, like Sehun and Tao them, they only spoil Luhan because he’s older than they are, and they find him scary at times. You’re different though. You’re the girl. He can’t hurt you, and if anything, you’re younger than him. He’s the one who needs to spoil you. Make it hard on him, and I mean my words.”

Soyoung laughed. Funny words he said, but she couldn’t help but feel contented with his words. Although she knew he was just making a joking atmosphere, she found a deeper meaning to his words. Kris’s words brought her comfort, because she knew in it, he had inserted his trust in her. In other words, he was welcoming her into the family. Their family: Kris and Suho’s family. The boys. Them.

“Don’t worry,” She smiled gratefully. “I won’t spoil him at all. I promise I’ll make things hard on him.”

Kris nodded with a grin before taking two glasses of wine from the server and handed one to her. Soyoung hesitantly took it in her hands with a smile. He took a sip from his glass and noticed that  she wasn’t drinking her glass.

“Do you not like wine?” Kris pondered to which Soyoung shook her head.

“I’m not much of a drinker,” she admitted, setting down the glass of wine.

There were barely any times in the past in which Soyoung drunk. In fact, her whole life, she had only drunk three times, and it wasn’t a large amount either. It wasn’t enough to help tell whether or not she had high tolerance in drinking alcohol. But that wasn’t the anything she was ever concerned of. Whether or not she was good at drinking alcohol, Soyoung didn’t care. She just knew that she disliked the taste of alcohol. She despised of it.

“Ah, is that so?” He set his glass down with pursed lips. “I should have asked you before grabbing you a glass. You’re not allergic to alcohol, are you?” He looked at his glass of cherry wine. “Or are you allergic to cherry like Luhan?”

Soyoung wasn’t sure if she had heard right. “Luhan’s allergic to cherries?” It was all she got out of what he had said.

Kris raised his brows. “You didn’t know?”

Sadly, she didn’t know. With a slight frown, she shook her head. Of course she wouldn’t have known. She had never asked him if he was allergic to anything. Now that she thought about it, she had never really asked much of him other than bluntly observing him by his responses.

“I didn’t even know it was possible to be allergic to alcohol or cherries,” she voiced before noticing that the alcohol was red. It must be cherry flavored. “So Luhan won’t be able to drink this alcohol?”

Kris shook his head, “He won’t, but it’s not like he would have anyways. Even if the wine they serve here was a different flavor, he wouldn’t drink it. Luhan doesn’t like drinking alcohol.”

*Just like me…? Wow, we have more in common than I thought.* Her thought caused her to smile. It wasn’t bad knowing the things they shared in common.

Kris could see the smile that appeared on her face, but didn’t question. He knew why. He knew very well. Instead, he changed the subject with a grin. “Why don’t we go find the guys?”

The smile on her face only widen as she nodded.

It’s been an hour since she arrived here. The main part of this event was going to start any minute now, and Luhan wasn’t here yet.

“Is something bothering you?” Baekhyun asked as they stood firmly, waiting for further announcements. “You look occupied.”

Soyoung shook her head with a petite smile. “It’s just been a while since I’ve come to something like this, so I’m just sort of uncomfortable,” she spoke. Even though it wasn’t the reason why she was being this way, it definitely wasn’t a lie either.

Baekhyun nodded, “I see. Did you want something to drink, or did you want to go outside for some fresh air?”

Again, the female shook her head. “I’m fine.”

"When is this thing going to start anyways? We’ve been here for an hour already,” Kyung complained.

The guys and Soyoung were gathered up in a circle, closely together while waiting for the official start of the event. They were all often greeted by business men, and like Kris had mentioned earlier, they paid little attention to them. They greeted and made stupid excuses to leave right away.

The MC for the night came to the stage and announced his greeting as everyone quieted before introducing the host of the business event, Huang Xu Guan.

“We would like to thank every one of you for coming here and joining us tonight,” he thanked as the room remained quiet. “I know we’ve been changing the dates a lot, and for giving us your time to come tonight despite the many changes, my family and I are very thankful. As some of you may know, I’ve hosted this event specifically for the return of my daughter, who has been in the states for the past 7 years. She has finally returned home after finishing school there, and is ready to continue majoring in business to keep our family branch going.”

“Huang Xu Guan?” Xiumin recited his name. He turned to Kris. “Afar from the fact that he’s a business man… Why does his name sound so familiar?”

“I was thinking the same thing,” Kris muttered.

Chen looked at the two. “You guys thought he sounds familiar too?”

Soyoung glanced at them.

“Isn’t… Huang Xue Ming his daughter?” Yixing voiced out to the group.

The boys opened their eyes wide, realizing Yixing was right, as Soyoung ,Kyung, and Zico looked on in curiosity.

“Huang Xue Ming?” Kyung whispered to Soyoung. “Who’s that?”

The female only shook her head. She, too, didn’t have  a clue to who they were talking about.

The man continued on with his speech, “And not only is she here with us tonight. Tonight, I also welcome you a special guest that came to my daughter. Please welcome, with my daughter Xue Ming, Lu Group Corporation’s incoming head master, Lu Han.”

The audience clapped in return as the group of friends stilled.

Had they heard right? Luhan? Although Soyoung, Kyung, and Zico were utterly confused, hearing Luhan’s name was quite surprising, especially to Soyoung. She may not have a clue to what the elder was saying, but she did catch Luhan’s name.

They all looked on as they saw a young female enter the stage with Luhan by her side. They both made the stage, a smile on both of their faces, and their hands interlaced.

“Why is Luhan up there… With her?” Sehun asked, his voice a bare whisper. The rest found no answer to reply. They were all asking the same question, and they will make sure to get an answer from Luhan himself later.

“Do you guys know her?” Kyung questioned.

“She’s Luhan’s first crush,” Kai answered, responding to the questions that was forming in the three’s heads.

“Wasn’t Yun Yi his first crush?” Soyoung couldn’t help but wonder. She had always thought it was Yun Yi, mainly because Luhan had never mentioned anyone else before.

“Yun Yi is his second,” Kai responded, not taking his eyes off of the stage. “Her name’s Huang Xue Ming. Luhan and her were practically best friends back when Luhan first moved to China when he was 8-years-old.”

“Then what happened?” Zico wondered out loud. “Not that I actually care though.”

“There were some complications back then,” Kai filled him in. “They shared the same mutual feelings, but Luhan rejected her when she confessed.”

“He rejected her?” Soyoung raised her brows.

Kai nodded, but didn’t explain more.

She returned her gaze to the stage where Luhan was standing next to the beautiful young lady, smiling and seemingly enjoying the attention. Unknowingly, she frowned. She didn’t like the fact that he was standing up on that stage. To her, it felt… suffocating.

“Thank you for welcoming us,” Luhan spoke into the microphone as the audience, once again, quieted down. “I feel honored for standing up here with Ms. Huang Xue Ming, who is my childhood friend. Seeing her once again, and having to her, I’m very proud.”

He grinned as he allowed her to take the stage, earning a positive uproar from the crowd. And yet again, the guys and Soyoung didn’t do anything, still confused about everything.

“I want to thank every one of you here tonight for welcoming me back,” Xue Ming announced with a beautiful smile. “And I want to thank my parents for holding this event for me, and especially to Luhan for helping me stand here today, giving me a hand upon my return. Being welcomed back with such a nice greeting, I wished I had returned much earlier.”

The crowd, once again, clapped again as Xue Ming’s mother took the stage again.

“Now, the food is now prepared and open. If you are hungry, help yourself to some snacks and the other food that are prepared in the other rooms. Please make yourself comfortable.”

And after those short announcements, both Luhan and Xue Ming exited the stage, mixing themselves among with the crowd.

Soyoung swallowed, feeling uncomfortable. After seeing Luhan up on that stage, hearing him speak but having no clue what he was saying, it made Soyoung uncomfortable.

And the fact that it caused her to be uncomfortable, made her frown. She didn’t like being here. Being in a foreign country, hearing a foreign language continuously. It was as if she was in a whole new world, and Soyoung’ didn’t like that feeling.

As the boys talked among themselves about the problem they were all confused about, Soyoung zoned out.

She took a small breath and walked away. Passing by the unknown guests, she quickened her steps. The more she passed by them, the more she wished she never came.

It was too much for her to handle.

Her breathing fastened, and her world slightly spun. For a slight second, she out, but was caught by an anonymous guest.

“Oh! Are you okay?” the male asked, concerned. Shaking her head to get a more focused view, Soyoung quickly came back to her senses. She pulled away, bowed to him, and as she was about to leave, he caught her arm once again. “Miss, are you okay? Do you need to go to the hospital?”

“I-I can’t understand,” she muttered, pulling away from the stranger. “I-I don’t know Mandarin.”

“Oh? You’re Korean?” the stranger asked, causing Soyoung to stop from pulling away. “I’m Korean too.”

No words could escape her lips. Still, hearing so much of a language she didn’t understand made her head dizzy.

“So, are you okay? Should I take you to the hospital?” he questioned. The concern was evident in his face. “You don’t look so well.”

“I-I’m okay,” Soyoung answered as she pulled her arm away before leaving him, not giving him time to speak to her.

She quickly made it outside, pushing passed the doors, and leaving a big sigh. It felt much better out here. It was much quieter, and there were barely any people aside from the so-called security guards standing outside of the door.

Soyoung took a deep breath and walked over to the water fountain in front, sprouting water beautiful. She smiled. It felt much better. Definitely better. She sat on the edge and slightly touched the soothing cooled water.

She didn’t feel so dizzy anymore, which was a definitely good thing. Then it brought her back to her earlier.

Soyoung frowned upon thinking about Luhan. Back there, when he was upon the stage, he seemed to have been a whole different person. It made Soyoung feel as if she didn’t belong. She didn’t like it one bit.

“It’s pretty,” a voice appeared.

Soyoung looked towards the door and found Baekhyun approaching her with a smile on his face, his hands behind his back.

“The fountain is,” Baekhyun grinned as he came forward. “It was the first thing to catch my eye when I got here earlier. I didn’t get a chance to look at it because there were many people entering. Now that everyone’s inside, with just the fountain being alone like this, it’s more beautiful than earlier.”

Soyoung gave a petite smile, agreeing with him silently. It was indeed beautiful.

Baekhyun took his glance away from the fountain and placed his gaze on her. She didn’t look too well earlier, but now, she looked much better than before.

“Are you uncomfortable here?” he asked, earning her attention once again.

“Just a bit,” she admitted as Baekhyun sat beside her on the edge of the fountain.

He placed his hands in the pockets of his pants. “Can I ask why?”

“Just because I’m not used to being here,” she replied. It was partly the truth. “When I’m away from home, I tend to be uncomfortable. It’s been a while since I visited another country, so it makes me uncomfortable.”

“You seemed fine earlier when you first arrived though,” Baekhyun pointed it out.

Soyoung remained silent, knowing it was true. She was fine earlier. She felt right earlier, but after seeing Luhan on that stage…

“Is it because of Luhan?” he questioned, catching Soyoung off guard.

She averted eyes but answered with a slight laugh, “No. It’s not. Why would it be because of him? He didn’t do anything to make me feel comfortable. If anything, having his presence here makes me more comfortable than not, because he’s my neighbor. Having him by me reminds me of home.”

“But he wasn’t with you the whole time you’ve been here. He was away from you.” Baekhyun glanced at her. To see her puzzled face, he knew he had hit something. “You don’t have to lie to me. I know I can be a silly guy at times, but when it comes to a situation like this, I’m more of a friend than anyone can ever be.”

Soyoung sighed quietly. He was right. It was because of Luhan. Because Luhan wasn’t with her.

She swallowed before allowing herself to spill her thoughts. “I don’t know. It’s just, seeing him up there on stage… It made me feel weird. When he was on stage like that and everyone’s attention was on him, it felt like he wasn’t Luhan. It didn’t feel like he was the Luhan I know.” *…It didn’t feel like the Luhan that I cherish.* “It seemed as if he was a whole nother person, and I guessed… It somehow scared me, to think that he was another person. He was so formal and so different. The Luhan I know is usually silly, and dumb, and he jokes around a lot, and… he’s just himself. Up there on that stage, Luhan seemed so distant from me. It scared me. I know it sounds silly and stupid, but it’s just how I feel.”

Baekhyun was quite surprised by her thoughts that she had spilled out, and an amused smile came upon his lips.

“It’s not silly or stupid,” he comforted her. “I don’t think I can understand fully, because I’ve never experienced such a feeling as that, but all I can say is that even though he stood on that stage today and seemed so different, at the end of the day, he’s still the same old Luhan we know.”

Soyoung smiled, appreciating his wise words. It did give her more comfort.

“You remind me a lot of her,” Baekhyun spoke quietly. “She said the same thing you did.”

“She?” Soyoung asked. Just who was Baekhyun talking about?

Baekhyun nodded. “She was a friend of mines… A friend of ours, I should say. Her name is Yu Xin Lei. She said the same thing you did about three years ago when Kris once stood on a stage like that.”

“Kris?” It wasn’t often when Kris was spoken about. Soyoung wasn’t necessarily close to Kris, but she knew he was a pretty quiet guy. Once again, Baekhyun nodded. “If Yu Xin Lei is a friend of yours, and the guys, why do I never hear about her, or have I ever met her before?”

“We stopped tight contact with her three years ago,” Baekhyun spoke softly. The solemn in his voice was evidential, and Soyoung couldn’t help but feel slightly bad for questioning. “Yu Xin Lei was Kris’s ex-girlfriend.”

And that was enough to spark even more interest in Soyoung.

“I’m sure Luhan has told you about the friendly hate between Yun Yi and Kris?” Baekhyun asked.

Soyoung slightly nodded.

“That friendly hate was caused slightly by Xin Lei herself. She was the reason why Kris often sees Yun Yi in a dark light,” Baekhyun began. “Xin Lei  has never done anything wrong, but if it wasn’t for Yun Yi, then Kris and Xin Lei would still be together till today. Yun Yi is the type of person who tends to want a lot of attention. She used to be the closest female to us guys, but when she found out that Kris was dating Xin Lei, she grew jealous. She felt she wasn’t getting the attention she wanted, so she often tortured Xin Lei with words when we weren’t around.”

Hearing about such matters made Soyoung feel slightly bad for the female. She never knew her, but even so, no one should have gone through that, and to know that Yun Yi was the one giving the torture made Soyoung see the female in a whole new light.

“Did Yun Yi … like Kris?” Soyoung was never a fan of relationships within a family tree, but if Yun Yi had liked Kris, she had nothing against it.

Baekhyun laughed at her question and shook his head. “No, it wasn’t like that. Yun Yi didn’t like Kris in that way. She was just jealous in general for not getting enough attention, or so she says.”

“So was Yun Yi the reason why Kris and Xin Lei aren’t together anymore?” She felt slightly bad for prying into matters that had nothing to do with her, but Soyoung was one curious girl.

“She was part of the reason why,” Baekhyun nodded, “But she wasn’t the main reason why… Kris and Xin Lei actually broke up… because of business matters. See, Xin Lei wasn’t necessarily a rich girl. You can say she’s an average girl, like Kyung and Zico. She wasn’t familiar with business. One particular business event that was held in China three years ago, Yun Yi invited her to that, and there, she saw that Kris and his parents were sponsors of that business event. Kris spoke for a majority of the time during that event, and I guess like how you saw Luhan, Xin Lei saw Kris in different light. She wasn’t comfortable with it. She told me similar words to yours. She said that Kris… didn’t seem like the Kris she knew. About two days after the business event, they broke it off.”

“All… because of the business event?” Soyoung questioned.

“I don’t think it was just because of the business event,” he shrugged, “I’m sure it was because of other matters too… but we will never know. We don’t bother Kris about it, because we’re afraid it might open up old wounds. I think Kris was serious about Xin Lei. He was actually planning on having a future with her… but that all shattered.”

Soyoung frowned. She never knew Kris had such a love story like this, and even if she did, she would still feel bad about it. If he really had planned on a future with her, then Soyoung was sure she was a nice girl.

“Honestly,” and now it was Baekhyun who seemed troubled, “I don’t think Kris is over her yet, event still today. Maybe he is, but the way he pushes every girl away, I don’t think he is. It bothers all of us, but we never ask him anything.”

Soyoung remained silent. It, too, makes her wonder if Kris is over her. Yu Xin Lei.

“Even so, he shows us that he’s fine without her,” Baekhyun tried to lighten the mood with a grin. He glanced at Soyoung. “So what now? Will you be fine without Luhan too?”

“W-what?” and once again that night, Baekhyun caught her off guard. Her face flushed red unknowingly. “What are you talking about? I’m always fine without Luhan.”

Baekhyun chuckled and nodded, “You’re right. You’re right.” He took out his phone to look for the time. As he was going to put it back, a thought flashed across his mind. He smiled and clicked on his camera icon. “Take a selca with me,” he urged as he pulled Soyoung near him.

“A selca?” She didn’t mind taking pictures once in a while, and the fact that this would be the first picture they take together, she was quite pleased that he wanted to take a picture with her. She moved closer to Baekhyun to fit the camera screen.

He wrapped his left arm around her waist, and in his right, his phone up. The two looked up at his phone’s camera and gave beautiful smiles.

“Kimchi,” Baekhyun grinned, followed by Soyoung. He took the picture before saying, “Let’s take another one.”

If it was even possible, he closed the distance between them and planted a surprise kiss on her red cheeks, taking her by surprise, and quickly took the picture.

“Byun Baekhyun!” Soyoung’s eyes were rounded, and her face was definitely red.

Baekhyun chuckled as he looked at their two pictures. He liked them. The ,lighting was perfect and the fountain behind them made the pictures charming. “I’ll send the pictures to you on your phone later when we get back to the hotel.” He put his phone back into his pocket before getting up. “I’m going back inside. Do you want to go too?”

Soyoung hesitated on her answer. Speaking honestly, she didn’t want to enter the place anymore.

Baekhyun, who caught on, smiled. “Kris isn’t feeling too well tonight either. He said he was planning to leave right after they announce the official statement for tonight, which they already have. I’ll take him to take you back to the hotel too.”

Soyoung gave him a grateful smile. “Thanks, Baekhyun.”

He shook his head. “I’m not a friend for anything.” He shot her a charming smile. “In case I don’t get to say it to you tonight when I get back to the hotel, good night and sweet dreams, Soyoung.”

He hurried inside, leaving Soyoung by herself. Even if she was by herself, she didn’t feel lonely. She felt contented. She was glad she had a friend like him.

After what seemed like 10 minutes, Soyoung saw Kris come out from the building, giving her a grin.

“You’re not feeling well, too?” he asked as he approached her.

“Something like that,” she nodded.

“I’m gonna go get the car. Wait here, okay?”

Once again, she was left alone. As she waited for the car, she could see someone coming from the door. It was then evident that the person was none other than Luhan. The expression on his face wasn’t good, at least it didn’t seem like it. He looked rather worried about something.

Kris’s car came to a stop in front of Soyoung. He made a hand gesture to get in, and Soyoung nodded.

She headed for the passenger’s seat and opened the car door, glancing at the main doors once more. Luhan hurried out and looked right to left before looking forward to meet eyes with Soyoung.

If she was seeing correctly, she could’ve sworn relief crossed over his eyes, and if she knew any better, she was sure Luhan was heading towards her.

Soyoung immediately averted eyes. She felt a need to panic, and before she could hear Luhan call her name, Soyoung seated herself and closed the door.

And because Kris didn’t see Luhan, he drove off, leaving Luhan to wonder how Soyoung could just leave like that when she obviously knew that he wanted to speak with her.

As the car left the territory and went out of sight, Luhan could only sigh.

He was late. He was too late to show her that her Luhan had returned. He had returned from being the Luhan she didn’t know, to being the Luhan she did know. Baekhyun explained things a little too slow, and now Luhan missed the chance to assure her that he was still her Luhan. He missed the chance to assure her that he was still Luhan, Soyoung’s Luhan.
