"Umma, it's me, Eunhyuk. I want to tell you something."

Sungmin smiled as he heard his boyfriend's excited voice as he spoke on the phone with his parents. Although they had been together for a few months, their parents still didn't know about their relationship. Tonight, after a romantic proposal from Hyuk, they planned to phone their parents and arrange a dinner for both sets of parents to meet.

 

Excited about their plan, they were sitting snuggled on the sofa as they held the phone. A game of rock paper scissors meant that Eunhyuk told his parents first, and Sungmin felt relieved when he heard how happy the voices on the other end of the call sounded to hear from their son. 

"Umma, I'm getting married."

There was silence, and Min reached for Eunhyuk's other hand, his eyes wide as he sat nervously. And then a laugh.

"Well, this is a surprise!"

"Is it a nice surprise?"

"Oh, sweetheart it's wonderful. I wish that I had met the lucky girl beforehand, but I'm so happy for you both."

"I'm not marrying a girl, I'm marrying a guy. Sungmin."

"Oh, sorry.. What a lovely name, I'm so happy for you both. But you'll be in trouble with your father, how come we haven't heard anything about this relationship?"

As he heard his boyfriend talk with his parents, Min let out a small giggle, happy that they approved of their relationship.

"Who's that laughing?" came a voice through the phone. And then a whisper. "Is that Sungmin, Eunhyuk?"

"Yes, it is."

"Oh my goodness, let me speak to him."

 

After a shy conversation, Sungmin was almost glowing with happiness. After Eunhyuk had given them the invitation for dinner, and promised multiple times to keep them updated about the wedding preparations, it was Sungmin's turn to tell his parents.

 

Holding the phone with shaky hands, he was hesitant to tell his parents about his relationship. They had taken the news about him being gay very badly, and his father was still quite awkward around him. So the idea of telling them that he was marrying a boy was terrifying. He had no idea how they would react, and having Eunhyuk listen to their every word just added to the worries, what if they said something horrible?

 

Dialling the number slowly, Sungmin delayed the moment for as long as he could. As the phone rang, he closed his eyes and prayed under his breath. He prayed for them to be out, he prayed for them to be okay with their relationship. 

"Hello?"

"Hello umma, it's Min."

"Oh hi darling, why are you calling?"

"I need to tell you something.. I'm getting married."

There was silence, but not the shocked silence like before. This was a heavy silence, and Sungmin could feel the disappointment in the air.

"To a boy?" 

"Y-yes."

There was the deep sound of a sigh. And Sungmin felt his heart break. 

 

"No, you can't marry a boy. Don't be ridiculous."

"I'm not being ridiculous. And I'm marrying him."

"Sungmin.."

Min choked back a sob, and felt Eunhyuk rub his back. Looking up at his boyfriend, he mouthed 'sorry' to him, and Hyuk kissed his forehead lovingly.

"Why don't you meet him? Come for dinner tomorrow and you can meet Hyuk and his parents too." Even before he had finished the invite, Min knew the answer.

 

"No. Sungmin, I can't stop you from marrying a boy, but I don't want to be a part of it. If you want to be part of our family then you have to break up with your boyfriend." Min could hear the disgust in her tone as she said the word 'boyfriend' and he quickly closed the phone to stop the call.

 

"Shh Minnie, everything is going to be okay." He cradled the boy in his arms, and wiped away the tears. Pressing tiny kisses to his hair, he soothed the boy.

"I'm sorry Hyukkie, I'm sorry that she was so hurtful about us being together.."

"It's okay Min, don't be sorry. There's no need to be sad, it's just another opinion. If your parents don't accept you, then mine will. My umma is so excited to meet you in person, and my appa will be too. Don't cry, I'm always here for you."

He pulled the blanket over them better, and cuddled the boy to rest on his chest. "Shall we watch your favourite film?"

"Sorry Hyuk, I'm making your shirt all wet with my tears..."

"I don't mind Min, cry all you want. I'll be here for you."

 

Resting his head on Hyuk's shoulder, and feeling the boy slowly caress his back, Sungmin reached up to kiss him softly. Their lips almost brushing as they sat together, Sungmin felt the love and warmth from his boyfriend. Leaning up to deepen the kiss, they swayed together on the sofa, just kissing with soft sounds as the fire crackled and glowed.

 

The next day, Sungmin was panicking. 

"Where are the glasses? I can't find them.."

"I've already put them on the table. Just relax, everything will be fine."

They sat and watched some tv, when they heard the doorbell ring. Eunhyuk felt Min's heart race, and kissed his forehead to reassure him.

Opening the door, Sungmin was immediately embraced in a hug.

 

"It's lovely to meet you finally. I can't believe Hyukkie kept you secret for so long. He shows off about everything else." Eunhyuk's appa was just as enthusiastic, shaking his hand and smiling brightly. Min felt like crying as he saw how happy and accepting they were.

 

Sitting down for dinner, there was another doorbell sound. Looking at his boyfriend, Sungmin rose to answer the door.

Opening the door to reveal his mother, he gasped in shock, and a little fright. Had she come to stop the wedding? Had she come to split them up? His heart pounded in his chest and he  had to lean a hand against the doorframe to stop himself from falling.

 

His umma held out a bottle of champagne. "Is it too late to join the celebrations?" She looked ashamed of her actions before, and Sungmin hugged her tightly.

It had taken a while, but he was finally accepted. And as he watched the way his mother hugged Eunhyuk, and greeted his parents, he had hope for the future.

 

He could keep his old family, and be able to start a new one. With no hiding, no secrets.
