Foreword

Prologue - In the Limbo

Minseok looks at himself and sighs. What has he become? Who has he become? What has life molded him into? A loser? A winner? A nobody? Average? He'd rather not think about it.

Minseok silently observes the rest of the members of his group. They've all, including himself, been trained to become what the public wants. People-pleasers, as some might call them. In reality, that's not who they really are. They've all been selected to sell a product, an image, and make profit. That is their sole purpose in the entertainment music. But have they succeeded?

He wonders if they ever feel like that as well. Like puppets, only moving and talking when their strings are pulled. He wonders if their puppeteers ever feel like they have failed with him.

Minseok often feels forgotten and left behind. Always a step after everyone else, always last and ignored. By his bosses, by his managers, by s , and by their fans.

All he's given up, all he's given himself into - it all feels useless and he feels empty. The countless different and uncomfortable outfits, the heavy make-up, the hair dyeing and teasing and brushing, the facial procedures, the demand to workout when all he wants to do is eat, the lack of sleep, the annoying fans, the ugly-minded people he meets each day - it just makes him want to quit. But as much he wants, he can't. Not because he's not a quitter, no. It's because he's signed a contract, a contract he cannot walk away from without consequences he'd rather not have to deal with.

Minseok hates it - being in a country he doesn't like, learning a language he has no interest in, talking to people he doesn't want to, pretending he cares when all he wants to do is spit in someone's face, pretending to be cute and innocent when he's far from it. It's a big farce - a lie he wants to bury in the ground and lay to rest.

All that's left for him is dreaming. Because his mind can take him to places he cannot visit and put him in situations he cannot be in.

But day-dreaming is different from real dreaming. Dreaming when your mind has no control over what your sleeping self sees, dreaming when you're left wondering over what your dream was.

People say your dreams tell a lot about who you are and what you're feeling. Sometimes they even predict the future. Dreaming's nice, but what about the nightmares? What do they say of you? How do they define you?

That's why Minseok is so mad and so distraught. Because Minseok never gets what he wants.

Minseok wants to dream.

But the nightmares keep chasing him, whether he's asleep or awake.
