Foreword
Thin lips pulled back and teeth clenched tight together. Brows furrowed and face contorted, Chen screamed, but there was no sound. There was only bright light and searing pain.
They say that when thunder is audible it means a storm is close enough for lightning to hit. They say it can strike even when there is no rain, because the tops of storm clouds can reach further than the rest of the cloud, as if anxious to sneak up on those who do not expect it.
This was not a lightning storm but it was completely unexpected, and by some unfair chance Chen became the victim of a twisted fate he could not have ever believed was possible in any place other than a dark, gruesome fairy tale.
