Kai had grown up in the city’s orphanage. Abandoned there as a child, it was the only home he had ever known. Except for the one time he had run away. In a burst of rage at life when he was 9, Kai had run away from the orphanage. He had managed to make it to the edge of the city when he stumbled upon a small traditional style house. The old man that lived there had ordered him inside and then proceeded to feed him. The old man had talked to him about responsibility and duty and honor. Nine-year-old Kai had had no idea what he was talking about, but as the years passed, the old man’s advice had come to mean a lot to Kai.
That first meeting, the old man had sent Kai back to the orphanage with orders not to visit until he had graduated elementary school. Kai had scoffed. School was for nerds. But something had happened on his way back to the orphanage that had changed his mind and changed his life: he had met So Hee.

“Kyungsoo’s in the hospital,” Kai said quietly.
The old man paused as he slipped his feet out of his outdoor shoes and looked up at Kai. “What happened?”
“He’ll be okay,” Kai assured him. “But I’m not really sure what happened. I was hoping you could help me figure that out.”
The old man stared up at him for a moment longer before slipping his feet into his indoor shoes and entering the house. “Come on inside then,” he said. “I suppose I should start the tea.”
Kai made himself comfortable on the floor of the small house and told the old man what had happened. He began with Luhan’s first day at their school and how he had fit right in with their group. Kai told him how natural it had been for Kyungsoo and him to step right up and defend Luhan. At this point, the old ma
