Of Moping Soccer Players and Supportive Best Friends

Of Soccer Balls and Pom Poms

“Aih egmbrasded mduyself ahgaiun. Fuhck” Doojoon groaned with his face smashed onto the cafeteria table, not even caring about the number of spit balls and puddles of drool that have probably landed on the surface.

“I’m sorry, come again?” Junhyung asked with a confused face.

“AIH EGMBRASDED MDUYSELF AHGAIUN! FUHCK!”

“Yeaaaaah, still not quite getting it.”

“Oh let me translate. The idiot said: I embarrassed myself again. .” Hyunseung helpfully butted in, happily swinging his legs while sitting on Junhyung’s lap.

Junhyung nodded in understanding. “You mean when he rolled down the hill this morning?” Junhyung took Doojoon’s grunt as a confirmation and comfortingly patted his shoulder while his boyfriend started recounting the story to everyone and anyone that was willing to listen.

Doojoon whimpered and made a noise that sounds something like a cross between a dying cat and a drowning whale (read: extremely unpleasant sounding).

Doojoon was sitting in the corner of the field (Correction Doojoon was moping in the corner of the field) while the rest of the team stared at their captain. How far has the great Yoon Doojoon fallen that he is now drawing circles on the soccer field (they could nearly feel the pathetic aura radiating from him).

Finally after some pushing and shoving did Hyunseung walk over (“You’re the best friend!”).

“Hey little guy, why don’t you tell Hyunseung what’s wrong” Hyunseung said in his most consoling voice(i.e. more patronizing than anything) while awkwardly patting Doojoon’s head.

“Hyunseung I’m not a dog, nor am I a five year old. I don’t need your sad excuse of comforting.” Doojoon sniped at him while glaring. But it was hard to take him seriously when he was tucked into a ball and hugging his knees.

“Oh good. Now can you go and tell them that because they seem to think that I’m obligated to ask you what’s wrong.” Hyunseung said, relief in his voice as he gestures to the rest of the team.

Doojoon only huffed in response and shuffled around so his back was towards Hyunseung.

“Are you still embarrassed from this morning?” Hyunseung, deciding that its time he lived up to his best friend duties, asked.

When Doojoon pouted in response (Hyunseung wished he could unsee that) Hyunseung sighed in understanding and Doojoon’s hair lightly.

“There there.” He continued his actions (in his defense the only thing he’s ever had to comfort was his pet Chihuahua) “You can still woo Yoseob. I’ll help you. Plus the head cheerleader always dates the soccer captain. It’s like an unspoken law”

And as Hyunseung drags Doojoon back to the middle of the field to start the game, there is renewed hope in the soccer player’s eyes.

“YOU DID WHAT?!”

“I said I invited Yoseob to have lunch with the team.”

“WHA−OW

“Be a little grateful would you? And can you please for once in your life act like a grown up?” Hyunseung sneered at the now whining Doojoon sitting across from him. He sighed and flipped his hair. He was too fabulous to deal with thick headed people like Doojoon.

So when the small cheerleading captain sat down next to Doojoon, Hyunseung gave Doojoon a well aimed kick to the leg and a warning glare to “act normal”.

Doojoon did want to talk to Yoseob, he really did. He was just too afraid of making an even bigger fool−if that was even possible−out of himself. So  instead he just sat there and made moon eyes at Yoseob (who, Doojoon noted with disdain, seemed completely unaware of his presence).

Doojoon sighed. He wondered how anyone could be more perfect. The way Yoseob looked like a chipmunk when eating. And how the light hit his small face perfectly to highlight his delicate features. And how Yoseob’s eyes lit up when he smiled and how his laugh is like a –

Plop

“What the ? Is that drool on my arm?”

−like drool –wait what?

Doojoon snapped out of his daydream to realize the whole table was staring at him with mixed facial expressions ranging from disgust to amusement.

“Doojoon you did not just drool on me!” Yoseob cried, horrified. But before Doojoon could even attempt to explain himself (not that he really had any defenses), the small cheerleader scurried away out of the cafeteria.

Doojoon felt like crying.

Meanwhile Kikwang leaned over to Hyunseung.

“What comes after Stage 3?” He whispered, only for Hyunseung to shrug in response.

“Dunno. He usually scares them off before I can find out.”
