The Mistake I Made

One year passed since that day.

One year passed since the day Yongguk and Yoonhee broke up.

One year passed since the last time they talked to each other.

They never met after that day in front of Yoonhee’s apartment. They had no idea what happened in each other’s life after they broke up. They didn’t know how broken the other person felt.

Soyeon took Yoonhee to bars, clubs, pubs and tried to hook her up with other guys but Yoonhee was never interested in them. Every time she looked at a guy she immediately imagined Yongguk’s face on it. At first she thought she was paranoid but after a while she began to accept that she needed to move on from him. Changes started happening in her life, from small ones like changing her cell phone and dying her hair to big ones like moving to a new city and finding a new job. She was a different person now. But one thing has never changed, her love for Yongguk. No matter how much Yoonhee tried to deny it she knew that she still had feelings for Yongguk. He was her first love, and probably her last.

Himchan tried to help Yongguk, he took him to strip clubs in hope that Yongguk would forget about Yoonhee but he was so wrong. Yongguk started breaking down when he saw all the women in front of him. Himchan told him to stop and tried to work out what was wrong with him but Yongguk didn’t stop. The reason he was crying was because he could picture Yoonhee’s face on all of those women. He missed her, he missed her so bad. The worst thing was that he didn’t know why Yoonhee was like that to him, how could she do this to him? There must be a bigger reason she acted like that other than him missing their date, but what?

None of Yongguk’s questions were answered because he could never contact Yoonhee anymore. When he learnt that she had moved to a different city he though that was it. He could never see her beautiful face again. He could never tell her that he loved her. He could never hear her laugh or cuddle with her or kiss those irresistible lips of hers again. Yongguk couldn’t believe that he let her slip out of his hands like that. What good was he if he couldn’t even keep the ones he loved in his life? Yongguk’s life started going downhill after that. He lost his job, he lost his friends including Himchan who was always there for him, he lost respect from his parents. The only thing that kept him from killing himself was the hope that one day Yoonhee would come back and forgive him.

A lot of things happened in that one year, things that they would never forget, things that could never be erased.

“Yoonhee!” Soyeon called out. She suffocated Yoonhee with a giant hug.

“I missed you so much! How have you been?” Soyeon said with tears in her eyes. She hasn’t seen her best friend for nearly one year, she couldn’t help but become emotional.

“Ah… So… Yeon… can’t… br…” Yoonhee tried to make out words but failed to. Soyeon’s hold around her was too tight. Soyeon noticed this and let go immediately.

“I’m so sorry! Are you ok?” Soyeon laughed which made Yoonhee laughed as well.

“I’m fine, I’m more worried about you. Why are you crying so much? You didn’t really miss me that much did you?” Yoonhee took out a tissue and gave it to Soyeon.

“Of course I missed my best friend! You left without even warning me first. We’ve been friends for years and you just left in one night like that…” Soyeon started crying harder and Yoonhee tried to keep her quiet.

“Soyeon, please stop crying… there are people around here too you know.” Yoonhee said quietly. Soyeon wiped her tears away and sniffed.

“Sorry, I just wished you didn’t have to go though.” Soyeon said with a sad voice, “It was all because of…”

“I told you I’ve forgotten about him.” Yoonhee interrupted Soyeon’s words when she realized who Soyeon was going to mention. “The reason I moved was to start a new beginning, that’s all.” Yoonhee gave Soyeon a smile. Soyeon eventually stopped crying and linked her arm with Yoonhee’s.

“Come on, we’ve got a lot of catching up to do.”

After Yoonhee settled all her stuff in Soyeon’s apartment Soyeon decided that they should go out.

“But I’m so tired! I just got here from a 12 hour flight.” Yoonhee whined.

“I already told everyone that you would be coming Yoonhee! You wouldn’t disappoint them would you?” Soyeon pouted. Yoonhee sighed knowing that she wouldn’t be able to deny Soyeon’s invitation.

“All right fine…”

“Yay! Tonight is going to be so fun now that you’re here!” Soyeon jumped up in joy and went to her wardrobe. She threw Yoonhee a mini dress and told her to change into that.

“Choi Yoonhee, tonight we’re going partying!”

The loud music in the club blasted in Yoonhee’s ears as she sat uncomfortably next to a bunch of strangers who were Soyeon’s close friends. She didn’t know one single person who was sitting in that room other than Soyeon. She felt a bit left out.

“Let’s play a game everyone!” a guy named Jason yelled out. Yoonhee remembered Soyeon said that Jason was born in America so that’s why he had and English name. Everybody cheered and Yoonhee joined them, even though inside she just wanted to go home.

Jason began telling them the rules of the game: “Ok so each one of us will point at the person that we’re attracted to at this table. If there are two people who points at each other they have to kiss! How does that sound?”

“You just want to play this game to kiss Soyeon!” a guy threw his arm over Jason’s shoulders and laughed.

Jason started to blush and hissed at that guy, “What the hell are you talking about? Shut up Jihoo!”

Yoonhee laughed at their little fight and Jihoo glanced at her for one second. He smiled at her and Yoonhee blushed turning her head away from him.

“Ok, so are you guys ready to start?” Jason said and everybody picked up their chopsticks to start pointing at the person they like. Yoonhee hesitated a bit but did the same anyways. It was just a game right?

“1… 2… 3!”

Yoonhee’s eyes opened wide as she looked at Jihoo. He was pointing at her… and she was pointing at him as well. They were the only two people pointing at each other. Everybody else was pointing at a person who didn’t choose them. Yoonhee felt her face heat up and she began to feel nervous. Did she really have to kiss him?

Jason pouted in disappointment when Soyeon didn’t point at him but got excited again when he saw Yoonhee and Jihoo. “Wow! Looks like we got a couple over hear. Yoonhee and Jihoo!” He said grinning. “Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!” Jason began to shout and everybody joined him.

“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!”

Yoonhee just wanted to climb into a hole and hide herself from everybody else. She thought that nobody would pick her so she wasn’t worried at all but now she was shaking like a leaf. She wanted to say no but couldn’t gather herself to do it. Everyone was pressuring her, including Soyeon.

Jihoo came closer to her and whispered in her ear: “Don’t worry it’s just a game. We don’t have to kiss if you don’t want.” He pulled his head back and smiled at her. Yoonhee felt her heart beat faster at the closeness they were in. She noticed how handsome Jihoo was. He had a lot of manly features and looks really mature. Yoonhee couldn’t help but think about Yongguk when she looked at him.

“Wait, what am I talking about? I’ve forgotten about Yongguk, he doesn’t mean anything to me now.” Yoonhee thought to herself. She tried to get Yongguk’s image out of her head as she leaned in and gave Jihoo a peck on the lips.

Jihoo was shocked at the sudden kiss but didn’t protest and kissed her back as well. He deepened the kiss and tasted the inside of Yoonhee’s mouth. Everybody around them fell silent as they continued their little makeout session. Jihoo’s tongue was asking for entrance into Yoonhee’s mouth but she pulled away breaking their kiss. There was a hint of disappointment in Jihoo’s eyes when their kiss was broken but he returned back to smiling when everyone around them whistled at them.

“Man, I knew that I told you guys to kiss but I didn’t mean make out for an hour.” Jason teased and Yoonhee blushed at his statement.

She excused herself from the group saying that she needed to go to the bathroom but the truth was because she didn’t want to break down in front of them. She ran out of the club as tears started rising in her eyes. When Yoonhee was kissing Jihoo, she was imagining Yongguk’s face on him. She was imagining Yongguk kissing her back but she broke it off when a memory of that night flashed in her mind. She couldn’t believe after all this time she still remembered that night like it happened yesterday. All the emotions never left her. As she kept her hand on to muffle out her cries she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned around scared that it might be Soyeon or Jihoo.

“H… Himchan?”

“Hey Yoonhee, you’re finally back. Do you want to go for a talk?”

To: Soyeonnie

From: Me

“Hey Soyeon, I met someone outside of the club that I really needed to talk to. Say sorry to everyone for me for leaving without saying goodbye. I’ll see you back at the house”

Yoonhee sent the message to Soyeon as she sat across from Himchan in a coffee shop. She accepted his invitation to go for a talk even though she didn’t really want to talk to any of Yongguk’s friends, she just wanted to get away from that party.

“One iced Americano and one Espresso please.” He ordered. Yoonhee looked at him surprised when the waitress left.

“How did you know I like to drink Espresso?” she asked him. Himchan gave her a look that said she should know the answer to that question already.

“Have you forgotten how close we were?” Yoonhee felt a pang of guilt when Himchan used the past tense. When Yongguk and her broke up she stopped talking to Himchan as well, she never got to ask how he was.

“Oh yeah… sorry.” Yoonhee said and Himchan gave her a smile.

“A lot has changed about you Choi Yoonhee but one thing hasn’t changed, you still say sorry a lot.” Himchan smiled at Yoonhee.

“I haven’t changed that much.” Yoonhee laughed. Himchan looked at her with a doubtful expression.

“Are you kidding? I could barely recognize you in that club. If that guy hadn’t said your name I would’ve never thought that was you. You look totally different.”

“You… you saw me… kissing Jihoo?” Yoonhee asked him nervously.

“So that’s his name? Jihoo?” Himchan smirked. “Don’t worry you don’t have to be nervous you have the right to do that anyways. You’re not dating Yongguk anymore.”

“Oh yeah… right.” Yoonhee fidgeted with the hems of her mini dress and looked at the surface of the table. She didn’t know what Himchan wanted to talk to her about, would it be about Yongguk?

The coffee came to their table and Yoonhee took a sip of hers. When she put the cup down on the table Himchan suddenly spoke up.

“Why were you crying?” he asked her. Yoonhee knew that this question was coming sooner or later, she just didn’t know how to answer.

“I’d rather not talk about it.” she replied quietly. Himchan nodded and took a drink of his coffee as well.

“Yongguk… he misses you.” Yoonhee looked at Himchan with shocked eyes when he said this. Her heart felt heavy when he mentioned that name.

“Really? I never knew he would miss me.” Yoonhee tried her best to keep a normal voice. The truth was… she missed him too.

“He wasn’t the same when you left Yoonhee, he was so broken hearted.” Himchan continued. Yoonhee wondered why he was telling her this. Was Himchan trying to make her feel guilty?

“He broke my heart first.” Yoonhee said in a cold voice.

“I know he broke that promise to show up for you one year anniversary but don’t you think breaking up with him over that was a bit too harsh Yoonhee?” Himchan asked Yoonhee and she gave him a confused look.

“What are you talking about? Did Yongguk never tell you what actually happened?” she asked him and it was Himchan’s turn to look confused now.

“What actually happened? What do you mean?” Himchan asked her.

“You really don’t know? How could Yongguk not tell you? How could he not tell you that he came to my place drunk as hell and attacked me? How could he not tell you what he did that night? How could he not tell…” Yoonhee broke down crying when images from that night crossed her mind. She promised herself that she wouldn’t cry anymore but she couldn’t help it. The scars Yongguk left were too big to be erased.

“He what? Yoonhee did Yongguk hurt you?” Himchan asked Yoonhee. She put her hands over and nodded. Yongguk did hurt her, both physically and mentally.

A fire flashed in Himchan eyes, he gritted his and clenched his fist. He finally realized why Yoonhee broke up with Yongguk. He couldn’t believe he never knew about this after one whole year. Could it be that Yongguk didn’t know about it as well? Himchan grabbed Yoonhee’s arm as she kept on sobbing. Yoonhee looked up at him with blurry eyes.

“What… what are… are you doing?” she asked him between cries but Himchan didn’t reply. He left some money for the coffee on the table and pulled Yoonhee out of the shop, not saying one word. When they finally got to his car he opened the car door and let Yoonhee get in. He went to the other side of the car and put the keys in.

“We’re going to Yongguk’s house.”

A/N: I recommend listening to BAD by Tablo while reading this part

Yongguk played with the knife he was holding. This was what he always did nowadays, it was funny how easy it was just to take that knife and cut his wrist. It would be a quick and easy death wouldn’t it? Just one swipe of that knife, one movement and done, he was dead. What was the point of life anyways? He lost everything he’s got already. Losing his life wouldn’t make a difference.

A knock came at the door and Yongguk jumped in surprise. Who could it be? Nobody visited him anymore, not even Himchan. Everyone has already left him. He lazily got off the couch and opened the door. His expression changed when he saw who it was, it was Kim Himchan. His mouth opened agape when he saw the familiar face. It been months since he saw his best friend’s face.

“Himch…”

Yongguk stumbled backwards and held his face in pain. When he lowered his hand from his face he could see something in his palm. It was velvet red liquid, it was blood. He looked up at Himchan with shocked eyes. He could see Himchan was hissing in pain from that punch, but the pain was much worse for Yongguk. The left side of his face was numb and there was blood running down his chin. Yongguk wouldn’t be surprised if he lost a tooth from that punch. Where did all this anger from Himchan come from?

“What’s wrong with you?! What did you do that for?” Yongguk shouted at Himchan with obvious anger in his voice.

Himchan pointed at Yongguk and yelled at him: “You! You bastard!” Yongguk was taken aback with Himchan’s words.

“What? What are y…” Yongguk didn’t get to finish his sentence because his eyes caught the shadow of someone behind Himchan. He squinted his eyes to see who it was. His whole body fell limb when he saw that face, that face he loved so much, that face he thought he would never be able to see again.

“Y… Yoon… hee…” he stuttered and fell to the ground with a loud thump. He thought he was hallucinating, was that really her? Himchan grabbed Yongguk’s collar and lifted him up from the ground.

“Do you know why she’s hear Yongguk?” Himchan’s face was close to Yongguk but Yongguk’s eyes never left Yoonhee. So she was real? He wasn’t crazy? “She’s here to tell you what happened that night on your one year anniversary. What actually happened!” Himchan told Yongguk and Yongguk looked at him this time.

“What are you talking about? I know what happened!” Yongguk said. Himchan chuckled in amusement and Yongguk felt furry in his stomach. Why was Himchan acting so weird?

“Do you Yongguk? Do you really? Because you were so drunk that you even forgot you attacked her!” Himchan gave Yongguk another punch to the face but it wasn’t as hard as the first one.

Yongguk’s heart broke into a million pieces when he heard what Himchan said. Was this true?

“Himchan…” a small voice came from behind Himchan and he looked back just to see Yoonhee in tears. “Please… stop…” Yoonhee pleaded, “Please don’t hurt him…” After all this time she still cared about Yongguk, Yoonhee never forgot about him, not one bit.

Himchan looked down at Yongguk’s face, what has he done? He was Yongguk’s friend, how could he do this to him. He immediately let go of Yongguk’s collar. “I’m sorry.” He apologized as Yongguk rubbed his neck. Yongguk looked at Yoonhee who was bawling her eyes out.

He walked over to her and put his arms around her. He tried to comfort her and kept whispering one phrase into her ears over and over again:

“Please don’t leave me.”

That night Yongguk sat down with Yoonhee to have a talk about that night. Yoonhee told him everything there was to know and Yongguk was scared, scared with himself.

“You wouldn’t stop yelling at me Yongguk…” Yoonhee said as tears fell from her eyes, “You wouldn’t stop hurting me… you wouldn’t stop spitting curse words… that wasn’t you… that was a…”

Yoonhee stopped not wanting to say the last word but Yongguk finished it for her:

“Monster.”

Yoonhee nodded and cried on the palms of her hand. She promised to forget about this but know she was just describing every single detail that happened that night. Why was it so hard for her to erase these horrible memories? Why?

Yongguk hated himself for what he’s done. He didn’t deserve Yoonhee after what’s happened. He hurt the one person he loved most in the world. It was his fault Yoonhee became traumatized like this. In her eyes he must be some kind of monster, some kind of beast. Why didn’t he remember any of this? Yongguk was glad Himchan punched him in the face because he would’ve done it himself if Himchan didn’t.

Yongguk reached for Yoonhee’s hand. He cupped her hands in his like they were some kind of delicate flower. He held them up close to his mouth and kissed them softly.

“I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry I hurt you, I’m so sorry I was so blind with my actions.” Yongguk apologized and he could feel tears forming in the corners of his eyes. He knew that apologizing wouldn’t be able to do anything but it was the only thing he could do now. He wanted to go back to the past and stop himself from making the biggest mistake in his life. “It was a stupid mistake I made but please… please don’t leave me because of it. Please Yoonhee, I love you.” A tear fell out of Yongguk’s eye and he began sobbing silently. Yoonhee’s heart softens at the sight. Yongguk did really care about her, he never stopped loving her.

“I… I can’t Yongguk.” She said with tears running down her eyes again.

“Please, I swear I’ll never make mistakes like this again. Please don’t leave me. I’ll do anything for you to stay.” Yongguk kept on pleading but Yoonhee kept pushing him away. She stood up and was about to leave when Yongguk pulled her back. His arm wrapped around her waist and leaned his face in close to hers. Yongguk’s nose brushed slightly against hers and Yoonhee’s breath hitched. She could feel the warm aroma coming from Yongguk’s body as he held her in his hand. His scent never changed, the way he held her never changed.

Their lips met and collided into one. Yongguk couldn’t help but on Yoonhee’s lips, he has missed the taste of those beautiful lips of hers so much. Yoonhee’s kiss was like drugs to him, he could never get enough. Even though he wanted more he tried to be gentle with Yoonhee, he wanted her to know that the monster he was that night wasn’t him. He wanted to show her he was the Yongguk she always knew and loved. His tongue asked for entrance into and Yoonhee allowed him. He let his tongue explore and taste every inch of her. Their kiss was full of passion and love. It was when both of them had run out of breath that they broke the kiss. They tried to catch their breath and looked at each other with eyes no longer filled with sadness, it was filled with love.

“I love you.”

Yongguk said into Yoonhee’s ear. He was scared he wouldn’t get an answer but after one minute the most beautiful words he’s ever heard exited Yoonhee’s mouth.

“I love you too.”

Yongguk embraced Yoonhee into a tight hug and didn’t dare to let her go. He thought that if he let her go he would wake up from this beautiful dream. Yoonhee hugged him back. Her arms held onto him tight not wanting to let him go. Yongguk had the power to make her fall in love. He had the power make her forgive him. He had the key to her heart. She has kept it lock away for so long yet whenever Yongguk comes into her life he would open it just like that.

Every couple had its ups and downs. For Yoonhee and Yongguk, this was just an obstacle testing their love for each other. They overcame it despite all the pain and hardship. This was true love.

5 years later ~

“Appa! It hurts!!!” little Jiye cried out as Yongguk put a bandage on her knee.

“I told you to be careful Jiye, now look what happens.” Yongguk frowned and Jiye just kept on crying louder.

“Don’t worry, umma will kiss it all better.” Yoonhee said and kissed Jiye’s tiny knee. Jiye giggled and the tears stopped running from her eyes.

“Thanks umma. It feels much better now!” Jiye said with a happy tone. “But what if it leaves a scar?” Jiye whined.

“Appa won’t let that happen.” Yongguk said smiling at her. “He won’t let anything leave a scar on his precious Jiye.” Yongguk kissed her on the cheek and Jiye smiled.

“Then why do you have a scar on your face appa? Who hurt you? Jiye will protect you from that person!” Jiye said with a strong voice.

Both Yoonhee and Yongguk looked at each other not knowing what to say. Yongguk turned back to look at Jiye.

“This Jiye…” he said and pointed at his scar, “this scar didn’t hurt appa.”

Jiye looked at Yongguk with confused eyes. “Huh? Then what kind of scar is it appa?”

“It’s a scar of love.”
