A Misunderstanding

Suho… proper, obedient, intelligent Suho… He was everything you'd want in a man. He was the sweetest person, the perfect gentleman. He makes everyone he talks to feel like they’re special. He was even Senior Class President, a title any mom would want her son or son-in-law to have. But, there was one thing, a small flaw, he had. He was oblivious to love.

Yixing sighed for the nth time that day, attempting to keep his eyes at anything but the man who sat in front of him. His best friend, Xiumin, well aware of his woes, just rolled his eyes before focusing them back on the teacher who was lecturing them on something about sentence structure and what not. To be honest, he had learned this back in primary school in China. Languages came easy to him, but his sigh came from a different problem.

Just about everyone in their grade knew that Yixing had a crush on Suho… everyone except said love interest. The worst thing about being gay, Yixing never knew who else was and who wasn’t. Suho is probably straight for all he knew.

The bell, signaling the end of the school day, caused a rush for the classroom door. As per usual, Yixing stayed behind to allow his classmates to duke it out for the first out the door. His strength exceeded the majority of them, but getting squished against the door by twenty other bodies didn't exactly sound pleasing. Xiumin rolled his eyes at the blockade at the door.

The teacher, Mr. Wu, with a sigh, pushed the student at the back, dislodging the clot of children from the door as if it happened on a daily basis, which it did. The students tumbled out allowing the natural flow to proceed. Linking arms, Xiumin and Yixing bid farewell to their teacher and exited the near empty classroom, passing Tao in their wake.

~*~

Yixing… gorgeous, talented, forgetful Yixing… He was just about everything you'd want in a man. He’s forgotten his own name before. Role call is very problematic for the teachers, but the class has caught on and reminds him every time. Aside from that, he was the epitome of perfection. His gorgeous dimples –the abs are a bonus– and his all around kindness. He came second in the school’s dance competition –Kai is just unbeatable. Suho had been wanting to ask him out for months, but there was one problem: Yixing had a boyfriend.

Practically attached at the hip, Yixing’s boyfriend and best friend Xiumin always had each other’s backs. On the dance team and in the advanced Choir, the two as well as their friends shows just how talented they really are. And Yixing was definitely among the elite. To Suho, it just made Yixing that much more attractive and him that much more afraid.

Watching Yixing and Xiumin walk out of the classroom, Suho couldn’t help but sigh. Mr. Wu placed an unexpected hand on his shoulder. As President, Suho had better relationships with his teachers than the rest of the student body.

“My money is on you guys in the teacher’s betting pool,” he reassured. Tao strode into the classroom, a content smile on his face. “Now, if you will, leave.”

An uncontrolled smile rose to his face at the comment, making him laugh. “Have fun you two! Don’t get caught!” He slung his backpack over his shoulder and exited.

Despite Tao following in Yixing’s group of friends, Suho knew and was remotely acquainted with just about everyone in the school. That was his goal which got him elected as Senior Class President. It also helped that he managed to raise funding for the class trips to be returned that year, so he had a pretty high favor in the class.

“Yo man, what took so long? The bell rang like five minutes ago,” the tall tower, Chanyeol yelled as he reached the school’s courtyard. His deep voice travelled over the rest of the student’s voices which flooded the air.

Suho smiled sheepishly, rubbing his neck as he approached the group. “Sorry guys, I got caught up with something,” he explained.

“Yeah, caught up daydreaming about Yixing,” Chen countered, the forever trolling smirk present amongst his facial features. Suho whacked him half-heartedly, used to their teasing.

Kyungsoo, the newly appointed Vice President, pulled Suho into a friendly hug, muttering “you’re hopeless” in his ear.

Unfortunately, right as he did that, Yixing and his group (minus Tao) passed by to head to dance practice. In his perspective, he saw a romantic hug and a whispered “I love you” in Suho’s ear. He felt his heart break at the sight before him. Before he realized it, tears streamed down his face. He booked it the second he realized, running past both groups as he did so.

Suho, not even grasping the situation, felt himself jerked away from Kyungsoo by his blue collar. “What do you think you’re doing to my boyfriend, Mr. President?” he heard a growl. He recognized the voice to be Kai’s before staring at Kyungsoo with wide eyes that could beat the Vice President’s.

The first thought that ran through his head, as stupid as it may seem, was: How the heck did small, shy, little, tiny Kyungsoo score someone as y, hot, gorgeous as Kai? Although, he had nothing on Yixing.

Kyungsoo pushed Kai away and buried his head in the younger’s chest. “Stop it Kai! I hugged him out of sympathy. He had a bad day and needed a friend. I’m not cheating on you! I promise!” he cried though it was slightly muffled since his face was in Kai’s shirt. Kai, after hearing his boyfriend, immediately calmed down, encircling his arms around the smaller in an attempt to soothe his crying.

However, if looks could kill, Xiumin and Luhan would have to be tried for murder because Suho and Chen would be dead. Refusing to back down from a fight, Chen got right in Xiumin’s face. “What’s your in a twist Baozi?”

Growling deep from his throat, Xiumin snapped back, “You want to know my problem, Orange? It’s you and him.” He pointed to Suho. “He just made my best friend cry because of his idiocy.”

Pausing only briefly to glare at Suho, he continued to rage back at Chen. “And you have only made me angrier with your stupid pride. I can forgive Kyungsoo because he’s dating Kai and maybe Suho, since he’s clueless, but you not so much.”

Finishing his rant, Xiumin rushed in the direction Yixing had run, followed shortly by Luhan and Sehun who stopped to throw a glare at Chen. Suho stood there still oblivious to what had just occurred. Chen shifted awkwardly from foot to foot stunned into speechlessness, attempting and failing to force down the blush rising to his cheeks. Kai cradled Kyungsoo whom had calmed and now just wanted to be rocked.

“Hey guys, what did we miss?” Baekhyun asked, returning to the group with Chanyeol in tow. The two had apparently slipped out before the argument in order to retrieve a candy bar and a can of Dr. Pepper from the vending machines on the other side of the courtyard. How they left so unnoticed was beyond everyone else?

The two were met with four glares.

The next day, Yixing showed up for class as normal. After what had happened yesterday, it seemed almost like a miracle that he attended today. Both Suho and Yixing shared the first period Choir class and it nearly broke Suho’s heart when his saw Yixing. His eyes, red and puffy, revealed that he must have cried for hours.

Mr. Kim pulled him aside at the beginning of class in order to check on his well-being. Returning to the room, a cheeky smile on his face, Mr. Kim addressed the class, “Everyone, your classmate, Yixing has just volunteered to perform a solo for all of you.” Said boy stepped out from behind the director, face flushed red and a pout present on his lips.

Mr. Kim Jaejoong knew music better than many people. He taught Choir in a way that made students learn but enjoy it at the same time. Many students came back year after year for that fact. However, he also knew how to get students to do what he wanted. Whatever he did that got the shy Yixing to sing before the class, no one will know. All they’ll know is, whoever his song was directed to, he’s a lucky man.

He grabbed the acoustic guitar which Mr. Kim kept in the classroom. Placing himself in the chair set up for those to perform in, he began a soft slow melody on the guitar. Pure emotion filled the room, pouring from the heart using the young teenager’s voice as it’s messenger. Everyone stared entranced on the performance including their director. It was as if an angel were singing his woes from heaven.

His song came to a reluctant end. He briefly made eye-contact with Suho before blushing and rushing back to his seat in the tenor section, the row behind him. Slowly, the class started applauding, cheering for their shy classmate. Several other tenors, Sungmin, Ryeowook and Luhan to be exact, gave him a comforting hug.

Soon, the entire tenor section surrounded him, hugging him and speaking words of encouragement. Squished amongst everyone, Suho found himself being inched towards him. Without warning, someone tripped him causing him to fall forwards onto someone. And that someone just so happened to be Yixing.

Lips locked, eyes wide, cheers in the background from fellow classmates, Suho felt a spark and quickly pulled away, his eyes locked on Yixing’s. He saw a glint of emotion in his eyes but couldn’t quite place what emotion it was… hate, disgust, regret?

A distant sounding bell snapped Suho out of his trance. Getting off of him, he tore from the scene, clumsily grabbing his backpack –tripping over his chair while doing so– and running out the door towards his next class, which fortunately didn’t have Yixing. To be completely honest, Suho felt so embarrassed. From Yixing’s reaction, his song had obviously not been for him as he had hoped.

After Suho fled, Yixing brushed his fingers across his lips trying to relive the warmth and softness that were Suho’s lips. To say there had been a spark would be a lie as well as the fact that Yixing enjoyed it. It had initially felt like his teeth had clashed against a rock but soon just gave way to shock. In all honesty, it wasn’t really even a kiss. However. just the fact that it was Suho who kissed him, left him stunned. Luhan and Xiumin had to pull him to his next class.

~*~

Gossip quickly spread through the school. The teachers gathered in the staff lounge during lunch. “Rumor has it that Yixing and Suho kissed and are finally dating. That means I win the bet,” Mr. Park smirked greasily.

Mr. Kim smacked his arm, partly with the intent to wipe that dirty grin off his face. “It was in my class, and I would know that it didn’t happen.” He caught the remaining teachers’ attentions. “Yes, they kissed. No, they are not dating. Suho got out of there faster than Shindong when he hears the buffet is open.”

Several of them laughed, the aforementioned dance teacher crossing his arms in disagreement. Mr. Wu smirked. He could still win the bet. Oh, once last period arrives, he’ll win the bet. Just you wait and see, Mr. Park.

~*~

Last period came much to quickly for Yixing’s liking. The only reason he took Chinese in the first place was for the fact Suho enrolled in the class easy A. Now, this decision had come back to bite him in the . Why did this have to be the one other class he could share with Suho? The class where the teacher loved to just pick on him.

Head lowered, eyes on the floor, he scurried to his seat behind Suho. Aside from roll call, Yixing’s eyes remained locked on his desk, refusing to raise them. For the most part, Yixing believed he could finally get through the day so he can curl up under his covers and re-watch the entire two seasons of Sherlock on Netflix with a bucket of ice cream. Unfortunately, he wasn’t that lucky.

“Yixing!” His head snapped up hearing Mr. Wu call his name. The entire class was staring at him now so he knew that mustn’t have been the first time his name had been called. “Now that I finally have your attention, in order to teach the class how to give a monologue in Chinese I have to perform one and since I don’t want to do it, you are.”

Mr. Wu must really hate him.

Making his way to the front of the classroom, Yixing nervously played with his fingers. “What am I supposed to say?” he whispered standing next to his teacher.

He placed a hand on his shoulder. “Just rant. They won’t understand half of what you say. If you say anything I don’t approve, just keep going. It’ll be fun.” He chuckled slightly, removing the hand and returning to his desk.

And with those comforting (?) words of advise, he ranted.

He ranted of the events of the past two days and how confused Suho had made him, of course without actually using his name. He spoke of the signals he’d seen and what it felt to be kissed by him. “I’m just so… confused,” he ended taking a deep breath in order to calm his fast beating heart.

His classmates stared at him. More importantly, Suho stared at him. They began clapping for him, despite having understood only bits and pieces, as he shuffled back to his desk as quickly as possible. However, in his haste, he failed to notice a backpack in the isle leading to his chair. Inevitably, he tripped.

Squeezing his eyes shut and bracing for impact, he felt an arm wrap around his waist and his body came to a halt. Blushing bright red, Yixing opened his eyes, planning on thanking his savior and hurrying to his desk, only to find himself staring straight into Suho’s dark orbs. He could feel Suho’s muscles tense around his waist and couldn’t help but think ‘his arms are ily strong.’

Catcalls and wolf whistles echoed amongst their classmates. Mr. Wu led the chant of “Kiss him! Kiss him! Kiss him!”

Gaining confidence, Suho leaned down whispering, “I’m sorry for confusing you,” in his ear. He captured Yixing’s lips with his own for their second kiss that day, but the first intentional one. Yixing truly liked this kiss. It was infinitely better than their first. Pulling apart, he couldn’t help but smile up at his long-term crush, feeling the happiest he had been in months.

Cheers erupted from their classmates; Mr. Wu called up the front office for some reason.

As the cheers began to calm and the two had hugged each other, a ding announcing the intercom rang. “Attention students, this is your Fabulous Principal Shorts speaking. I’d like to announce that your Student-Body President is no longer single, meaning Mr. Wu, Mr. Kim Jaejoong and I have won the bed. ON THAT Ms. Geelhood! Good luck with Yixing, Suho, and have a super-mega-foxy-awesome-hot day students.”

Shortly after her speech, they heard cheers echo through the hall from surrounding classrooms. Face flushed red, Yixing buried his head into Suho’s shoulder, as the man still had a firm arm around his waist. Despite his own embarrassment, Suho only strengthened his hold around his small waist in silent support. A relationship with Yixing would be something he’d be proud of.

The bell rang, freeing them from the embarrassing situation. As usual, Yixing lingered after for the crowd to disperse before exiting the classroom, arms linked instead with Suho. Xiumin followed behind, all too happy for his best friend so he didn’t complain. He quickly snatched Tao as they passed him, making him trail along with them instead of ‘visiting’ Mr. Wu.

Several people, as they ran past, yelled congratulations to them or patted Suho on the shoulder. When they finally reached their friends, Luhan and Kai swept Yixing up into a hug, refusing to let go. “Mine!” Luhan had hissed, awkwardly Yixing’s chestnut-colored hair.  Their respective boyfriends detached them for him, allowing him to return to Suho’s embrace.

Students who remained in the courtyard began to chant, mirroring the situation earlier in their Chinese class.

“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!”

Feeling bold, Suho picked Yixing up with surprising strength, despite the fact that he had gotten a taste of that earlier when he had been caught. Wrapping his legs around his waist so he wasn’t just hanging there, Yixing leaned in to meet Suho’s kiss.

“Make it hot!”

The two instantly broke apart in a fit of giggles. Kyungsoo smacked Kai whose erted grin at his own remark stretched from ear to ear.

“Whoa, whoa whoa, what’d I miss?” Chen asked trotting up towards the group. Xiumin skipped over giggling slightly as he pulled Chen in for a kiss.

“Everything, Hun, everything,” Xiumin answered once the two broke apart.

Their friends stared at them, jaws metaphorically on the ground. “Okay, I must have missed something,” Suho started. “When the hell did you two get together? Seriously, I thought you hated each other’s guts.” Xiumin giggled as Chen pulled him closer into his chest by his waist.

“He plucked up the courage to ask me out before you did, and he was afraid I’d hit him and reject him unlike you who was only afraid of rejection,” Xiumin stuck out his tongue. Yixing pouted crossing his arms.

Chen chimed in. “Trust me Suho, we’re not insulting you, but I like my guys feisty unlike you’re little bunny over there,” he started. “I need to be more courageous than you or I’ll be single for the rest of my life. I needed that courage, which I probably stole from you, to ask this little vixen out.”

Xiumin slowly pulled out of Chen’s embrace going over to hug his best friend. “So, I say we celebrate the new happy couple. My uncle owns the pizza restaurant down on Main Street, so let’s go pig out, my treat,” Xiumin claimed, linking arms with his boyfriend and his best friend.

Yixing linked his other arm with Suho, giving him a light kiss on the cheek. Suho had become quite addictive to him within the last hour.

The group was off to celebrate what would be the start of lifelong relationship.

I had so much fun writing this. There is a serious lack in SuLay Fics so I wanted to write one myself. I love the couple just as much as I love Sassy Chen (trust me I REALLY love Sassy Chen). Thanks to my friends for the inspiration as well as their cameos in the story.
