At the end of the mind game (part 1)

Dreamer

**Author's note: I divided this chapter into 2 parts so that it would match Janie's side ("What's going on? On such a good day like this"). Also that's where you'll find out what happened to Sungyeol and Myungsoo. This picks up where chapter 5 ended.

“I know everything,” Sungkyu said with a knowing glint in his eye.

Dongwoo was taken aback by the leader’s sudden statement. “Huh? What do you mean?”

Hoya walked up next to his side and nudged him. “Eh, don’t play dumb. We know all about Janie.”

Dongwoo didn’t know what to do except to laugh, which has always been like an automatic reflex for him whenever he didn’t know how else to react, even if it didn’t make sense like now. He knew that eventually this day would come, when the members would uncover his little secret, but he didn’t expect it to come so soon. And now they were staring at him curiously as he collapsed into a laughing mess on the floor. I guess it’s time to come clean, he concluded.

He took in a deep breath as he sat up on the floor. The members joined him. Sungkyu put his arms around his shoulders and looked Dongwoo straight in the eyes. “So…” he said raising his eyebrows suggestively.

“She’s just a friend,” he said quickly, waving his hand. He began to feel jittery all of the sudden, like his body would like nothing more than to escape.

“We know,” Hoya said, sitting on Dongwoo’s other side. “We’ve seen her picture.”

Sungiong took out his cell-phone, pulled up something onto its screen, and handed it over to Dongwoo. “She’s not very girly is she,” he said as he unconsciously fluffed his hair. Dongwoo looked down at the screen. It was Janie, posing with her hands tucked under her chin, beaming. And of course, as always, her hair was in disarray, her bun slipped from the top of her head down to the nape of her neck.

Dongwoo laughed out of shock. “What? Where did you get this?”

“Sungyeol and L followed you after the photo-shoot,” Woohyun stated matter-of-factly. “But what we want to know is, where the hell would you meet a girl like this? She’s American!” He finished, shaking the picture of Janie.

Dongwoo couldn’t answer his question, being unable to let go of the first piece of information. “What? They followed me?!” Was he really that oblivious that he couldn’t sense s tailing, let alone two chatterboxes? How were they able to keep silent for that long? Dongwoo didn’t know if he was offended or impressed.

And as if on cue, the door to the practice room flew open, and the said members walked in, tongues hanging out of their mouths, panting as if they just ran a marathon. Then, after catching his breath, L began running around the room, swinging his arms like propellers. “Whoa! That was wild! Are we dancing? Let’s dance! I’m ready! Are you ready? Come on! We’re promoting soon! Oh, we’re sitting. I like sitting too. Let’s sit!” He rambled as he joined the rest of the members on the floor.

Sungkyu glared straight at Sungyeol. “Okay, who got Myungsoo drunk?”

Sungyeol’s eyes widened at the accusation. “It wasn’t me, hyung. It was Janie!”

“What?!” Dongwoo laughed. He was having a hard time processing what was unfolding in front of him. “Janie?”

“Yea, Janie! She gave us both beer. And L…got a little carried away,” Sungyeol explained, looking at his accomplice sheepishly.

“She’s SO nice!” L chirped. “We had fun. Didn’t we, hyung? Until her dad showed up. Man, he’s SCARY!” Sungkyu looked at the young member and shook his head, but couldn’t help but to smile at his cuteness.

“You met Dr. Thompson?” Dongwoo asked.

Hoya turned to him. “And apparently you did too? Meeting with her parents, are you sure that you’re just friends?” Hoya always had a penchant for picking up little details like that and using it against you. Dongwoo swore that he would make a great cop with those interrogation skills.

“Don’t be like that,” he joshed, nudging his rapping partner slightly. “I met him when I dropped Janie off at the hospital. Her appendix burst.”

Sungyeol threw his head back. “Oh! That’s what she meant!”

“Yea, she was just going like this,” L said. Then he tried to mimic what Janie did earlier, but it looked like he was being disemboweled.

“Her Korean isn’t that good, is it?” Sungyeol stated, while staring at L who now pretended to be near-dead and twitching.

Dongwoo rubbed the nape of his neck, thinking back to his conversation with the old man and his first meeting with Janie. “Actually it’s pretty good considering that she’s been studying it only for less than a month.”

“WHAT?!” Sungyeol exclaimed. Then he shook his head in astonishment. “She’s…”

“American!” Woohyun interrupted. “When is someone going to explain that part? How did you meet her?” He demanded, tapping his phone on the floor, expressing his impatience.

“Remember when I had the rash?” Dongwoo asked, hanging his head in embarrassment.

Sungjong winced. “How could I forget? I was the one rubbing lotion on your back every night.”

Dongwoo looked at the maknae. “I love you,” he said as an apology. Sungjong just waved him off, after all Sungkyu and Woohyun have made him do much worse.

Hoya’s eyes widened in mock shock. “She gave it to you?!” he joked. They rest of the members giggled ertedly.

“No!” Dongwoo adamantly defended himself. “They were stress hives. Seriously! I just met Janie at the convenience store when I was picking up the medicine.”

“And she still became your friend. What did your hands reach for the same bottle of anti-itch cream?” Woohyun joked.

“How romantic!” drunken L excitedly exclaimed. “I want to meet a girl like that.”

Sungkyu shook his head and mumbled, “Okay, that kid is just talking for the hell of it. He has no idea what he’s saying.”

Dongwoo returned to the topic at hand. “No, she kinda just…broke down and cried right there in the store.” This statement was met by blank stares from the members. Dongwoo decided to take their speechlessness as a sign to continue his story. He told them how he was drawn to Janie because he had been missing his family and Janie seemed like the little sister he never had (with the exception of Yoo JiAe). And since she was also alone for most of the day because her father worked at the hospital, when her appendix burst, he was the only one there to care for her and take her to the hospital. Dongwoo finished by telling s that he snuck out to see her today just to see how she was recovering. “And that’s it. I’ve only really met with her about…four times,” Dongwoo said, slightly surprised that they’ve grown so close in such a short time.

“Let me get this straight,” Sungyeol started. “First time you met her, she cried for no reason. And the second time you met her, she passed out in her own vomit.” Dongwoo nodded. Sungyeol scoffed, “Hyung, you really know how to pick them.” Dongwoo opened his mouth to refute Sungyeol’s implications, but he raised his hand to cut his hyung off. “Yea, I know. I know she’s just a friend.”

“Ah!” L exclaimed, remembering something. He pointed at himself and Sungyeol. “When we met her, she shot Sungyeol with mustard,” he said and then broke out into laughter.

Sungyeol leaned back onto the wall. “Ah! That’s right! My shirt’s still there.”

Sungkyu wrinkled his face in confusion. “Whose shirt is that?” he asked.

“Her dad’s,” Sungyeol responded with a sly smile, but then he winced and writhed a bit, scratching his back against the wall. “Do you think I can rip the tag out? It’s itchy!”

Dongwoo stared at Sungyeol who was squirming in his seat, wearing Dr. Thompson’s shirt. Dongwoo couldn’t help but to feel a bit jealous. He had missed what appeared to be a fun time, and they got to drink beer. Why didn’t Janie offer him any? Then, he saw Sungyeol reaching for the shirt’s tag. Dongwoo grabbed his dongsaeng’s hand. “Don’t. You don’t want to tear a hole in it,” he warned. Sungyeol reluctantly listened to him.

“There’s one thing that I find weird,” Sungjong started. “Janie really doesn’t know anything? She’s not pretending to be chic?”

Dongwoo burst into a hearty laugh. “Chic?” he choked out between laughs. He would describe Janie more as cute like a little child, but chic? Janie was as chic as an elephant. She did not have a cool, stoic exterior. Her face read like an open book, completely unable to hide anything or to lie. “No,” he began after calming down. “She really doesn’t know anything, not even about Korea in general. She didn’t even know what kimchi was. That’s why I like hanging out with her. It’s like she’s seeing the world for the first time.”

“Wah! How could you not even know what kimchi was?” Woohyun asked in disbelief, shaking his head.

Sungkyu put his arm back around Dongwoo’s shoulders and gave him a squeeze. “So you’re just taking her under your wing?” he asked. Dongwoo nodded innocently. “Aigoo! It’s like you’re an ambassador for Korea.”

Hoya turned and looked at his friend. “So when do we get to meet her?” he asked  “There’s a lot about Korea I would like to teach her.”

“Like what, hyung?” Sungjong asked, taking the bait.

“ You know what I mean,” Hoya said wiggling his eyebrows suggestively. Dongwoo grabbed Hoya’s collar half in jest and half because he was feeling protective of Janie. Hoya laughed, taking his hyung’s hands off of him. “I meant that I would like to show her national monuments and stuff.”

At that moment their manager burst into the practice room like a hurricane. “Yah! Yah! Yah! What are you lazy bums doing sitting down? You have a comeback soon. You need to be practicing!” he reprimanded the seven young adults.

L got up first. “Yea, what are you guys doing? Let’s dance! Come on, get up!” he urged the members. Then he began to perform some of the choreography on his own. “We’re going to look so cool. CAUSE YOU’RE MY DESTINY! Oooh! Ooooh!”

The manager’s eyes darted from giddy L with his still ruddy cheeks back to the rest of the members, slowly getting up from the floor. “Okay, who got Myungsoo drunk?”
