The Rise of the Warrior

Mystical Series

Are you sure you want him taking care of all of us?” Said Yoseob with concern clear in his voice.

“Why? Aren’t you sure about his skills?” Said the man from his throne in the center of the room.

Yoseob looked up, clearly pondering what to answer. Yes, of course, he was completely sure about the other’s skills. He had seen with his very own eyes how hard he always worked to protect everyone, how he wouldn’t hesitate when holding his precious sword, how he was capable of everything just to accomplish his mission and, especially, how he would always put the race’s future before his own life. And that was exactly the problem, he was too much of a warrior to handle a position like that. How was he going to handle the pressure that came with a position like that? He was worried and even a little bit afraid of the possible consequences.
“Yoseob-ah? What are you thinking? Do you think there’s someone better than him for the job? You know you can voice your opinions in here.” The man smiled to the archangel who couldn’t help but lower his head, flushed by his boss trust.

“No, I don’t think there’s a better person. I just… nothing, but would you mind if it’s me who tells him?” Yoseob didn’t even dare to look up this time so he just waited for the man to answer.

“I guess that’s not a problem. But tell him as soon as possible, I have work for him that has to be done immediately” He sounded serious out of a sudden so Yoseob simply nodded and turned around quickly, leaving the rounded room and feeling at ease just for a second, before worrying again about what he was going to do.

Once outside, Yoseob rested his back in a wall, massaging thoroughly his temple. Why didn’t he tell his boss that Doojoon wasn’t the best candidate for the job? He was sure that he was going to pay for his cowardice. But there was no way he was going to tell anything anymore, he knew the choice was done and it was too late to back up or complaint, he had to cope with what was coming and he needed to do it, as the man said, as soon as possible. What he didn’t expect was that it was going to happen even sooner than expected. He started to cross the wide hallway, decided to fresh himself up before the big moment. He was too lost on his thoughts to notice that someone was exiting the same room he was going to enter, so he crashed against the opening door with a loud thump.

“What the…?” The person exiting the room just saw a pouting archangel rubbing his own forehead and looking at him with shimmering eyes. “Yah, Yoseob-ah, shouldn’t you pay more attention? Are you ok?” He was cleared worried about the other even though it wasn’t his fault.

“It hurts…” Yoseob didn’t know why he acted like that every time he was with the man in front of him. He was an archangel, he was the right hand of god, a strong, capable and well-known archangel. Why was he acting all weak and fragile when the other was near.

Doojoon just took the shorter boy by his waist and pressed him dearly against his chest. He was sure that the other was exaggerating but he wasn’t going to complain. It was rare the moment they could stay like that, they both were pretty busy, especially Yoseob, and most of the time they would only share stares and quick touches when they’d cross each other in a hallway or a room. That was one of the reasons why Yoseob acted like that, he would always be up to share an intimate moment with the taller archangel and only acting like that he had those moments granted. Doojoon kissed his redden forehead and planted some soft kiss in the other’s nose, cheeks and lips, making the other smile widely. But Yoseob quickly remembered what he had to do so without much saying he grabbed Doojoon’s wrist and dragged him outside to one of the benches in the palace’s garden. They sat and Doojoon stared curiously at Yoseob, who sighed heavily without looking at the other.

“You want to say something, right?” Doojoon took Yoseob’s hand from his wrist and intertwined their fingers together. He liked how their hands fitted perfectly even though they were so different in every sense.

“I have an announcement from Him, he wants you to do something” Yoseob was dragging the matter, trying to get enough time to clear his thoughts.

Doojoon squeezed his hand confidently and grabbed his chin with the other, making the brunette archangel look him straight in the eyes.

“Tell me what you have to say. Don’t worry, you know I will put up with everything you throw at me” The taller smiled reassuringly, trying to give him the confidence he was lacking right now.

Yoseob sighed once again, really trying to gather together all his strength. He wasn’t afraid of the other’s reaction, he knew the other would, as he already said, put up with whatever he was thrown at him. He wasn’t afraid of the other being unreasonable or mad or extremely happy. He was afraid, once again, of the changes that were going to come with the new position, the changes in the archangel and in their relationship. If what they had was a relationship in fact and not just some meaningless touches and stares. He felt another squeeze in their intertwined hands and felt the other’s gaze burning him. He felt himself being engulfed by the other’s golden eyes, way more dark than the rest of their eyes. Yoseob was able to see all the layers behind the usual golden color, even though all of the angels had golden eyes, only the archangels were able to notice the slight differences between them. Some of the youngest angels had a million sparks dancing in their irises, the oldest had blue lightning bolts that sparkle every time they were amused or excited. And Doojoon’s eyes had a dark glow that made his eyes much more appealing to the archangel than any others.

“And?” Doojoon smirked, clearly amused at the other’s lack of words.

“Sorry” Yoseob snapped out of his daze. “He told me to tell you that he’s very pleased with you, he really appreciates all you have done and…” Yoseob bit his lower lip nervously, was he ready to tell him? There was no going back after telling him, that was for sure…but was he still on time or was too late? Doojoon’s stare told him that it was indeed. “He wants you to be the general of the army” He said it so fast so Doojoon stared at him blankly, thinking that he had heard wrong.

“What did you say? General of what?” He wasn’t believing his own ears. His brain wasn’t able to register the information…him, a simple warrior, being the general of the Heaven’s army?? That was wrong, that wasn’t even possible, he was good at fighting, at protecting, maybe even at planning and attack, but he wasn’t ready at all to command just a hundred men, much less a complete army.

He looked into Yoseob’s eyes, waiting to find the answer he was looking for, but he just saw something that made his soul sink. Was that…sadness? Why was Yoseob sad that he was proposed as the next general? Wasn’t he happy that they would be at the same level? Because, even though they both were 2 of the 3 archangels, they weren’t at the same level at all. It was true that Doojoon wasn’t exactly “just” a warrior, since they didn’t have any general or lieutenant he was pretty much in charge of the warriors. But he had always followed God’s orders, he was just the messenger, the mediator between the Big Boss and the army. But why was Yoseob sad? He didn’t know and he wasn’t going to take any choice before finding out the reasons behind the other’s emotions. But before he was able to ask anything they both heard the shorter’s name being called out from inside the palace, probably someone needed his service, he was always so busy to spend more than a brief moment with the warrior.

“I have to go now…Think about it and answer Him as fast as possible, he has work for you already if you decide to take the job.” Yoseob just smiled a sad smile and pecked him in the lights before rushing inside the building, leaving Doojoon confused and without a clue of what to do.

“Has the puppy left you alone?” Doojoon heard a familiar voice coming from behind.

“Have you finished all that load of work you have to do?” He didn’t even turn out to look at the other approaching him.

“Yep, daddy, I even did part of tomorrow’s work I think” The angel smirked, playfulness glimmering inside his golden eyes.

“Did you do something again? I told you our situation right now is a little bit delicate, Junhyung. We have to measure our movements before doing anything risky” Doojoon sighed, he knew his subordinate well enough to expect some problems coming.

“I didn’t do anything, I just cleaned up a little a zone that wasn’t exactly my assignment. But it all went perfectly fine and I even saved a human!” Junhyung kept his mocking tone, even though he was well aware of the seriousness in Doojoon’s statement.

The archangel finally turned around and stood up, confronting his subordinate. Junhyung was probably the best warrior after him, probably even better than himself if it wasn’t for him being an archangel, but he was well aware of the other recklessness and his violent nature. Even though angels were supposed to be calmed and collected, Junhyung surely had the temper of a demon, but his sense of justice and combat skills made him the perfect ally in the war the world fighting. Doojoon himself was a little bit short tempered too, always looking for a chance to fight against their enemies, but he was a leader by nature and he knew that he had to control his subordinates so they can win another battle. Junhyung was proven the most difficult to control and he had to make sure that none of the younger warriors followed the ways of their sunbae. A sudden though overwhelmed Doojoon, if he was to take the position of general, Junhyung would definitely become his successor. Junhyung would definitely become his right hand. But why was he thinking about that? Was he really considering taking the position? He found himself wondering how it would be to the general, to have an army under his control. He would be able to help the Heaven army become more efficient, more focused in winning the war.

“You look like a general already.” Doojoon looked up at Junhyung, who was now seriously looking at him with a weird spark on his eyes.

“Why would you say that? I still haven’t accepted the position and I don’t know if I’m going to do it.” The archangel averted his gaze from the other, trying to hide the blatant lie he was trying the other to believe.

“Who do you think you are talking about, Doojoon hyung?” Junhyung used the familiar appellative just to show the other that he wasn’t talking to his subordinate right now, but his best friend.

“Jun-ah…I…I don’t know what to do, really…Yoseob-ah…he…he looked so sad, I don’t even know what happened but it’s like he doesn’t like the idea of me being promoted.” Doojoon looked so fragile for a second and Junhyung just patted his friend in the back.

“Have you asked him? You know he’s pretty busy lately, maybe it has nothing to do with you…” He hoped to cheer up his friend, even though he knew it was useless. Only the energetic archangel with the brunette hair could cheer up the strong warrior right now.

“He had to go, He was calling him again. Yoseob only told me to give him an answer soon, but I need to figure out what he’s thinking.”

“You have to talk to him…but more importantly you have to think of what will be better for the community, I know Yoseob is important for you but you have to think if you will be a good general for us, cause we need a leader, you know we need a leader, hyung” Junhyung gave Doojoon a meaningful look before turning around and leaving to somewhere where he could kill the boredom he felt every time he wasn’t killing some demons.

The archangel decided that he needed to think about his situation thoroughly and he needed to do it alone, without anyone interfering with his mind. As Junhyung said, he needed to think on the whole community, as angels and as archangel. He couldn’t be selfish over this, even though he didn’t like Yoseob being bothered by him being general. He needed to talk with the archangel and ask him what was exactly the probably, why was the other sad? Maybe he was afraid of them being apart or maybe it was just some unrelated stuff, as his friend pointed out earlier. In any case he needed to think about it so he started to walk towards the church, where he was sure there wasn’t anyone at this late at night. And he was totally right, as he entered the church he found himself alone in the huge building and it started to rain outside. The drops started to hit against the stained-glass windows creating its own symphony and Doojoon found himself relaxing with the sound. He sat in one of the benches and stared blankly at the beautiful images in front of him. The church walls were filled with angel paintings. In each one of those paintings were drawn beautiful scenes of their lives, their beginnings, the first angel that was born from the love of 2 angels, the appearance of the 4 archangels and the first time they saw their father. But not only the good memories were imprinted in those walls, the bad ones were also there to remind them why they were fighting and why they should keep fighting. Doojoon was able to see the downfall of the 4th archangel, their brother decided to go against their father and some angels followed him to their new realm, and place surrounded by darkness, pain and sorrow. But where they said they were free, free from their father’s attentive glare, from his judgment.

He kept looking at the paintings, especially those were he could see the pain, the wounded black angels being stabbed by those who followed Lucifer, Mephisto and his children, especially the raven haired fallen angel that commanded Lucifer’s army, Lilith and his strong power, even without the need of being an angel she was able to fight against them face to face, their enemies weren’t weak or outnumbered by them. They weren’t compassionate nor forgiving, they were cruel, liars and killers, they would make used of their so-called inferiors, the demons, just to win that eternal war they all were involved in. He kept looking, analyzing every facial expression, every figure, every scene, analyzing and memorizing them all and little by little the answer to his problem was clear in front of him. The community needed a leader, the community needed him to be their leader, to lead them to the victory and the glory against those dark forces that kept appearing in the walls of their church.

And when he found out what he had to do someone bumped him from behind, making his warrior instincts to wake up and pin whoever dare to attack him from behind against the bench. Doojoon gasped when he saw that it was no other than Yoseob, who was looking at him with surprise and a glimpse of terror. Doojoon made the attempt of moving away but the terror was quickly replace by playfulness and Yoseob grabbing Doojoon by the hem of his angelic tunic, smashing their lips together roughly. And Doojoon knew it, he knew that the other already knew his decision, he was already aware of it and that was his way of letting all that rush of emotions flow. Doojoon felt himself being pushed even closer by Yoseob, even though there was no space between their bodies. The warrior took Yoseob’s hands that were tightly grapping his tunic and placed them over the other’s stomach while breaking the heated kiss. He knew what the problem was and he caught one of the shining tears that were drowning those beautiful golden eyes. He put the salty tear inside his mouth, tasting Yoseob’s emotions and trying to figure out exactly what was so wrong with him being general.

But the archangel wasn’t going to tell him anything, at least not for now, at least not before all those emotions were out of his system. Doojoon just cupped his face and trailed kissed all over the other’s wet cheeks. He waited for the sobbing angel to calm himself while rubbing circles on his exposed milky waist so they could really talk the issue over. Yoseob felt himself getting more and more relaxed with each kiss, as if Doojoon were taking his fears away each time he pressed his soft lips against him. His sobs became just a steady breath after a while and they both sat up when they felt like talking. But they found out that they really needed to talk, they stare at each other intensely without even blinking and they found out what was wrong with the other, they found out what the problem was and they just hugged each other tightly, Yoseob feeling his eyes filled with the tears once again but fighting against them because he wanted to see Doojoon like that for one last time at least.

“I’m going to miss you so much” Yoseob murmured against Doojoon’s bare shoulder while the other sighed, fighting against a threatening sob.

Without saying anything more Yoseob stood up from the bench, kissed Doojoon on the cheek lightly and told him that their Boss was waiting for him. Things were going to change from now on, Yoseob was sure about that, but he didn’t know how those changes were really going to change everything in their personal lives.

Doojoon was called to occupy his new position inside the Heaven’s army. He started to work as crazy and he noticed that he loved the power. He loved to command others, to know that they would do whatever he said and that they would even risk their lives for him. Junhyung was offered the post of his right hand but he playfully rejected it because he liked his actual mission, he enjoyed being outside looking for enemies instead of up there just commanding people. Doojoon himself kind of missed the action, the physical contact and the sound of swords clashing and bones and muscles being tore apart. But those moments are quickly forgotten after he was given the task of preparing a new attack against Lucifer’s army. The only thing he regretted was the fact that his relationship, if that how they should call it, with Yoseob was almost non-existent since he became general. They were both extremely busy and each one resided on a different building, they didn’t even share a room anymore and so even the slight touches and the furtive stares were almost zero. He missed the shorter angel so much that it hurt so much, as much as if his heart was being torn apart. But he kept burying himself on his work so he wouldn’t have the time to think in the other. But sometimes he couldn’t help but think if the other was still missing him and if he wasn’t suffering as much as himself.
