Small Spaces

Yongguk and Himchan arrived at the filming location together. The older of the two didn’t really have to be there, he had finished his filming yesterday and there was only the drama filming left now. But Yongguk wanted to be there to cheer Himchan on.

When they got out of the car, Yongguk spotted Jieun right away, her teal-green hair was kind of hard to miss. She had arrived earlier to record a few scenes with Min Hyorin, the actress cast for this music video. Jieun had also caught sight of the two boys and eagerly waved them over.

“Good afternoon” she said cheerful, nodding to them as they stood next to her. Jieun’s breath came out in fog as she spoke, the weather was very bitter and cold today.

“Good afternoon, Jieun-ssi” both the boys greeted her properly with a bow. “It’s cold today” Yongguk sighed as he straightened his back.

“Yes, but I think it’s nice” Jieun smiled as she wrapped her scarf a little tighter around her neck. “Are you nervous for today, Himchan-ssi?”

“No, not at all” Himchan answered receiving looks from the other two. “Okay, I’m a little nervous… but it’s really exciting” he corrected himself with an amused smile on his face.

“Kim Himchan-ssi! It’s time to start preparing!”

At the call of his name Himchan headed onto the set and Yongguk called “good luck” after him before he and Jieun sat down in two empty fold-out chairs to watch as the final drama scenes were ready to be filmed.

“It’s nice of you to come to the filming, even though you didn’t have to” Jieun said, watching as Hyorin and Himchan talked to the scene director.

“Himchan came to my recording yesterday so I wanted to be here for his, and I want to see it to the end, the filming” Yongguk said, he couldn’t help but feel a bit proud of their work. They were closing in on their debut date and doing this collaboration both trained them and gave them some attention.

“I understand the feeling. I'm really excited about this” Jieun said with a smile before they let the conversation die as they concentrated on the scene before them.

Himchan was now sitting on the edge of the open car trunk listening to the scene director as he explained the scene. Meanwhile a stylist was busy tying his wrists together with rope. Min Hyorin stood over by the driver-side door having her make-up touched up. They were going to be filming the first angle soon. They were going to do it all in one go to so Himchan had to be in the trunk while Hyorin drove a short distance before stopping, getting out and opening the trunk to reveal her hidden passenger.

“You better get in the trunk before we blindfold you” The stylist said and Himchan did as he was told, getting into the small space in the back of the car. From the outside the trunk had looked pretty big, but getting in it he realized it had just been an illusion because it was so empty before. He almost banged his head against lid as he got in, the stylist reaching out a hand to shield him from the sheet of metal. Well inside he was quickly blindfolded, there was still some light slipping in where his nose stopped the ribbon from meeting his cheeks. This wasn't so bad, he thought.

“Don't forget to duck you head so you don’t hit the edge” Himchan heard the scene director say and he ducked as he laid flat on his back. He had to bend his legs to fit in the small trunk of the car. It felt really strange being tied up and blindfolded, and on top of that laying in a trunk. “Okay good, I’ll put the gas can over by your feet and close the trunk now, we’ll be starting the scene almost immediately”.

Himchan felt the gas can being place at his feet, slightly heavy with the liquid inside, it made a glugging sound as the trunk was slammed shut above him with a harsh “thunk” and everything around him went pitch black. Now there was no light slipping past the blindfold at all, complete darkness.

Himchan listened to the muffled voices outside, directions and “ready!” replies being called out. He could hear Hyorin opening the driver-side door and getting inside; when she slammed the door shut he flinched, his breath catching in his throat for a second. This was becoming less and less exciting by the second. It was cold in the trunk, they had taken away his down-filled jacket, gloves and earmuffs. Couldn't they work faster? Death could sleep here, it was like a coffin.

The engine finally started after the “action!” was called out and Hyorin was a little tough on the gas getting a pulling start that made Himchan roll in the trunk, hitting the side with his shoulder and elbow. Trying to correct his position knots formed in his stomach as he touched the lid above him, it was so close. The space was so small. He barely shifted his legs and his knees hit the other side of the trunk, the toes of his shoes brushing against another wall. He was stuck, he was really trapped.

His chest grew tight and he couldn't help but breathe heavier, the air tasted like car exhaust. He wanted to sit up, he wanted to get up. But with his hands bound like this he couldn't even attempt it. His teeth clattered as the fear wrapped itself around him and maybe because it was cold to, he wasn't sure. He pulled the blindfold from his eyes hoping to be able to see something, but he was just met with more blackness no matter how hard he looked. So he started banging on the trunk to get it open. Because he wanted out. He needed out, he couldn't breathe!

Yongguk and Jieun had watched to car coming rolling towards them, Hyorin was supposed to drive a short distance before stopping to make it as smooth as possible, Yongguk felt a little sorry for Himchan, having to lay in the trunk all that time, it must be cold.

Hyorin had almost reached the stopping point when the director called out, “CUT! Stop, Stop”

Hyorin stopped the car and the two spectating idols searched the scene for what may have gone wrong, the only thing they could find was her expression. She looked distracted, distressed almost. The director called to her from where he was standing “Cut the engine and get out” and as the engine's humming noise died down they could all hear the pounding coming from the trunk.

“Himchan-ssi stop pounding on the trunk, it's distracting Hyorin-ssi, Himchan-ssi!” the director called but Himchan didn't seem to hear him.

“Open the trunk! Someone open the trunk, please!”

That was Yongguk shouting, he was out of his seat fast approaching the car with a worried look on his face. Hyorin, who was out of the car now, had heard his call and the urgency in his voice, so she quickly got to the trunk and tossed it open. She found Himchan staring back at her, eyes wide with fear.

The trunk was open and Himchan thought he'd be okay now, but he still couldn't breathe and Hyorin was just looking at him, confused. Everything was quiet, except for someone rushing over the gravel covered road.

“Himchannie!”

Then there was Yongguk, his bigger figure casting a soft shadow over him. Reaching in and pulling him up and out of the trunk. Himchan felt like his knees were jelly and he couldn't stand on his own, so the other man sat him down on the edge of the trunk.

“Himchan, it's fine now...” Yongguk's voice sounded brisk but it had a slight undertone of concern. His hands holding a firm grip to the other's shoulders.

“I- I can't... breathe-” the black haired man wheezed desperately through his clattering teeth, even though his brain was buzzing with too much oxygen, he felt like someone was sitting on his chest and he couldn’t stop shivering.

“You're okay... it'll pass” Yongguk said in the same tone as before, placing one hand on Himchan's back rubbing circles between his shoulder-blades to sooth him. After a short moment of silence he spoke again. “Why didn't you say something?”

Himchan choked, Yongguk sounded disappointed and Himchan wished he was angry and yelling instead. But Yongguk didn't yell, he never did. “It's not- a big deal...” Himchan mumbled out between his still strained breaths. Next Yongguk pushed him back, bending down, lowering himself to Himchan's level so he could look him straight in the eye.

“Not a big deal?” Himchan flinched at the tone in his voice, so much disapproval. “They had to stop the filming because you didn't say anything, that's bad” Yongguk scolded him. “They could've done it differently from the start if you had just said something...” more scolding and Himchan looked to the ground not being able to meet the other's gaze anymore. His breathing had evened out but now it was difficult to breathe again, because there was a lump in his throat that he couldn't swallow away.

“I thought it would be okay...” Himchan huffed, his voice wavering and tears dropping from his eyes. Yongguk felt a sting of guilt in his chest when he saw the tears slide down Himchan's pretty face. Maybe he shouldn’t have scolded him right away? He gave Himchan's shoulder a squeeze before pulling him to his feet and holding him there for a moment to make sure he stood on his own.

“Let’s sit you down somewhere else” Yongguk muttered, more to himself as he led Himchan to the chairs where he and Jieun had been sitting before. Jieun had since left her seat and was talking with some of the staff, trying to help out.

After sitting Himchan on the chair Yongguk removed the blindfold that still hung around his neck, wrapping it twice around his own wrist so it wouldn’t get lost, then he kneeled down to remove the rope still tied around Himchan’s wrists.

Himchan watched him through his blurred vision, watched as he worked on the knot that the stylist had done too tight, it wasn’t coming undone so easily and he yanked on the ropes a little to make the knot loosen up.

Himchan blinked to clear his vision before lifting his gaze to look at Yongguk. He still looked disappointed; his eyebrows slightly furrowed together, lips in a thin line and his jaw-muscles clenching as he ground his teeth slowly. The knot finally came undone and Yongguk cast a glance up holding Himchan’s gaze for a few seconds. Himchan wanted to apologize, no he needed to apologize. His vision blurred again when new tears gathered and he looked down feeling the salty liquid leave a cold trail on his cheek. “I'm sorry” he said, his voice bubbling as the lump in his throat made it hard to speak.

“It's not me you should be apologizing to” was Yongguk's only response as he slowly rolled the rope together neatly.

“I really thought it would be okay” Himchan sobbed, ashamed he hadn’t thought about the consequences before acting so stupidly, selfishly. Worrying about his own image before thinking about the others involved.

Himchan sniveled and Yongguk felt another pang of pain in his heart. As much as he disapproved of how Himchan had handled the situation he couldn't help but feel sorry for him and he lifted his hand placing it on Himchan’s knee, giving a light squeeze.

“It’s… okay” was the only thing he could think of saying. He wasn’t good with words, he never knew the right thing to say in situations like this. So he kept his hand on Himchan knee and watched him as he sat, head hung low. At least the tears had dried up now.

Jieun came over to them a few minutes later, telling that they were ready to start filming again. “The trunk will only be closed for a few seconds now, so you don’t have to worry” she explained. Himchan quickly got up from his chair not wanting to cause any more trouble, he bowed to her.

“Jieun-sunbae I’m sorry… for causing trouble” he hurried to say watching her as he stood back up.

“It’s okay” Jieun just answered with a genuine smile on her face. “You didn’t know it would be that scary. I would probably have reacted the same way”

“No, I knew but- I thought it would be okay… I’m sorry” Himchan wanted to explain more, but he wasn’t sure how.

“It’s alright Himchan-ssi. You’re forgiven, so don’t apologize anymore. Just remember today and learn from it. It’s okay to have faults” Jieun said gesturing for him to go finish the recording. Himchan bowed again then headed over to the car again.

Yongguk watched from where he was still kneeling on the ground. Even though they were the same age, Jieun seemed so much more mature. She knew what to say and Yongguk appreciated her for that, for being better with words than he was and being able to tell Himchan that is was okay to mess up as long as he learned from it. Yongguk hoped that he could be good with words like that in the future.

Thank you so much for reading!

Now I can stop thinking about elevators and car trunks orz Roughly 2250 words... I feel like it's way to long for the smll idea but I just didn't know how to end it properly and went on for ages it seems. I don't like it but it's been one of those stories that has haunted me for more than a year now and I just had to finish it, get rid of it.

I've only proofread it once so there are probably still mistakes everywhere, but I've stared at it for so long now that I just can't see them any more.
