Sungyeol was falling apart. Not metaphorically – literally. Since birth his parents were told that he wouldn’t live till the age of sixteen, and yet by some remarkable miracle a week ago he managed to turn seventeen. His parents took him to a countless amount of doctors with PhDs –each had a separate theory on what was happening with Sungyeol, but no one could offer a real solution. Pills, therapies, exercise, shots, vaccines, even surgeries – nothing worked.

Sometimes his hands or legs or neck would become paralyzed. Sometimes he would go blind for no reason. Sometimes he would just faint. The symptoms were very random and obscure but one thing was certain – Sungyeol's flesh was literally, and inevitably, rotting from inside. Calling it one of those ‘terminal diseases’ main heroines have in melodramas would be an understatement. Having cancer would've been better - at least then doctors would knowwhat they were dealing with.

Here Sungyeol was dying, and dying .

Nevertheless Sungyeol came to school every day like a good student and never lacked optimism. Teachers liked him for his diligence (though his grades did not particularly reflect it...), guys loved his sense of humor, and all-in-all you could say he was the life of class 2-B.

Even the girls adored him. Actually, let me rephrase that: Sungyeol (with his fabulous good looks) was the most sought after subject of admiration in the entire school’s female population – which gets us to my next point.

Have you heard of Yoo Ara? What? You haven’t?! Oh, well…that’s a little unexpected! Let me introduce her to you then: Yoo Ara – smart, kind, energetic and very pretty. Girls want to be friends with her and guys swoon over her. She can be a little shy (which is part of her charm), but she’s very good-natured and humble. Ara is like a white fluffy animal – and everybody loves white fluffy animals.

And although she could have any guy in the school with a bat of her eyelashes, for the past year her eyes were always in search of only one person in particular. He was a little awkward, but he always had this incredibly dazzling smile on his face that seemed to blind Ara whenever she looked at him. His tall, lanky figure made him stand out amidst the crowd, naturally drawing Ara’s attention.

So can you guess who it is?

Yes, dear reader, Yoo Ara, who some would call the ‘Queen Bee’, was hopelessly in love with Sungyeol.

And after a painful internal struggle to keep her feelings hidden, Ara finally got the courage to confess to Sungyeol. And although he harvested no special feelings for her aside from respect, he wasn’t lunatic enough to reject the school’s most beautiful girl. Besides, let’s be honest here – he was bound to die within the year and he still hadn’t experienced his first date, first kiss, first heartbreak, etc. So why the hell not?

Thus, Sungyeol accepted her, and on April 3^rd, 1996 the ‘perfect’ couple was born.

But this story isn’t about Sungyeol and Yoo Ara.
