Description

All the world's a stage.

And all the men and women are merely her players in a game of fate.

Birth, life, and death all follow a prewritten script.

People say this script was written by Fate.

And no one can alter Fate's written decisions.

But when someone decides to change the script for a mortal girl, the thin line between immortals and humans snaps in two.

There is no room for exceptions and adlibs in any script.

Fate is very unforgiving to those who dare rewrite her scenes.

No one escapes her wrath.

Not even her little brother, Death.

~x~

Fate controls everything. No one knows what she has in store for them. No one can challenge her. Her words are law. No one changes her script without her permission.

Everyone fears Death, the reaper of souls and Fate's faithful henchman. He is merciless and cold. His heart doesn't beat. All he knows how to do is follow Fate's design and take those meant to die. He doesn't bend the rules and makes no exceptions for anyone.

Except for her. For a girl destined to die, he'll change Fate's script.

A lone woman stood at the dead end of an alleyway. Her eyes were blank as she stared down at the body lying at her feet. Her eyes reflected the figure and a sole thought repeated over and over again in her mind like a CD stuck on replay.

Was she dead?

She was so young, only twenty five. She had just left the bar after meeting up with some friends for girls' night when she decided to take a shortcut home. But on the way home she had gotten jumped by a suspicious man who she had been following her since she had left the bar. She was naive to think it was a mere coincidence. She screamed too late. No one heard her. And even if they did, they were too late to save her from her fate. The bastard took her purse and everything.

"And your story ends here I'm afraid."

The woman jolted, turning around to face the voice. Her eyes widened as she stared at the blonde haired boy dressed in all black. He wore no expression on his face, but she could see the darkness in his eyes and the coldness they held. It was like he had no soul. Like he was dead.

"Who are you?" She questioned hesitantly.

"I am Death." He replied monotonously. "I'm here for you."

"No ..." The woman shook her head and backed away from him. "I won't let you take me. It's not my time. This must be some sort of mistake."

"There's no mistake." Death replied as he walked towards her. Soon she was cornered with nowhere else to go to. He blocked her only path of escape. It was already futile. "Your death had already been decided by Fate a long time ago. It has already been delayed enough. You cannot run from your fate."

"Why? Why me? Why now? What did I do to deserve to die like this?" The woman questioned him sorrowfully. She was on her knees, tugging at the material of his pants. He could see the tears b at her tear ducts, threatening to spill over and stain her dirtied cheeks. "Can I at least know why I had to die?"

Death sighed and looked at her with a cold gaze. "Your fate was decided before you were even born. It was your fate to die this way and there was nothing you could have done differently to change it. Fate decides everything for you. Just accept it and move on."

Before the woman could question him any further, Death reached out his right hand and touched her forehead. The ring on his fourth finger glowed and a bright light covered them. And when the light faded away, she was gone. Her soul disappeared without a trace, leaving her empty vessel of a body cold and lifeless on the alleyway ground. Without a word, he turned and started down the alley. As he walked, he reached into the back pocket of his jeans and retrieved a folded gold parchment paper from it.

His eyes gazed at the long list of crossed out names. Only one name remained at the bottom of the list, but it wasn't before long before a line was drawn through the name magically as though some supernatural force had done it for him. The list disinegrated in his hand and he lifted his gaze to look at the person standing in front of him. She was a blonde wearing a small satisfied smile. In one arm, she held a book and in the other hand she held a quill.

"Sister." Death bowed his head politely as the woman approached him.

"My dearest baby brother." Fate smiled, stopping two feet in front of him. "Excellent job as usual. Of course, I didn't expect less from the mysterious Death. I knew I chose the right sibling when I encouraged Mother to choose you as Death. The others wouldn't be as cold and heartless as you."

"I'm glad I can please you, sister Fate." Death nodded his head. "It's rare to see you out in the mortal realm like this. To what do I owe this special occasion to?"

Fate beamed and cheerfully ripped another golden page from her book. She held out for him to take. "I have another list for you. These mortals have reached the end of their story and thus their script must come to an end, brother. Do take care of them for me."

He nodded and glanced over the list. "Of course, sister. Anything for you. I will not disappoint you."

"Good." She smiled and snapped her fingers, disappearing in a dark haze. Her voice still lingered in the air even though she had already vanished from the mortal realm. It echoed in his head. "Remember what I always tell you, Death. Everyone is fated to die. Those mortals cannot change that no matter how hard they try. My decisions ... my script ... they're all finalized and ready for print."

Death nodded once more and read over each and every name. He would not fail at his duty as reaper of souls, an undertaker of death. Mother had given him this duty so that Father's ideal world would not crumble. He wouldn't let that happen. Not while he his heart was cold and still.

Death makes no exceptions.

Not for anyone.
