Beginnings at JYP

Idol's Friend

The first day on the job, you walked in the door, breathing deeply in an attempt to calm your racing heart. You couldn’t believe this was happening. A k-pop fan since elementary school, you had never even dreamed of entering JYP headquarters. Especially because you had a terrible voice and an unfortunate lack of dancing skills. An assistant escorted you into Park Jin Young’s office and told you to wait. He would be up in half an hour. As you heard the door close behind you and the retreating steps of the assistant, a smile burst onto your face and you let out a small squeal. You couldn’t even believe that you were here, at the JYP Entertainment building, sitting in the great Park Jin Young’s office. With that goofy smile still plastered on, you sunk into the plush seat and reminisced on how this miracle had even happened:

You were sitting in the food court at the mall in Koreatown. While slurping down some noodles, you felt a finger tap you on the back. When you turned, you were shocked. In front of you was THE Park Jin Young of JYP Entertainment. Embarrassed at the state of your mouth, which was currently stuffed full of noodles, you chewed as fast as you had and swallowed as quickly as you could before flashing a small smile at the man.

“I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful you are,” JYP started off. “I don’t know about your abilities, but with your looks, I know I could make you into a star.”

Shocked, you just stared back at him.

Noticing your shock he introduced himself with a chuckle, “That was too forward of me.” He extended his hand. “I am Park Jin Young, CEO of JYP Entertainment, a Korean entertainment company. And your name is?”

You replied shyly with your name.

“Ah-- [your name]. That’s pretty! So anyways, as I was saying, I could definitely make you into a star. Do you happen to have any talents you could show me?”

“Well,” you honestly replied, blushing at his compliments, “I can’t sing or dance to save my life. Sorry...”

He looked at you with a troubled gaze. “Well, that just won’t do. I know this may sound ridiculous but I feel this strange need to hire you. You must have some talent?” he asked with a hopeful tone.

“I can cook, clean, take care of people, and teach, but when it comes to performing I’m not very good,” you responded knowing that these were unhelpful traits.

“Hmmm...” JYP studied you for a minute. He picked up his phone, looked at a few things, then his face lit up. “I know! I’ve been hoping to expand into the English speaking world. Although I am adequate at the English language, I don’t have the time to teach all my artists. Would you maybe be interested in becoming an English tutor? You look like a student, so during the school year, you could teach over Skype. Then during break and the summer, I can have you flown out to Korea. I’d pay for your plane ticket and rooming, and you’d be paid a salary.”

You just stared back at him, totally in awe that this offer was even being made to you.

“Ahhh is this too strange of an offer? Maybe it is, I’m sorry I asked. There is just something special about you that I can’t quite pinpoint. But I’ll leave you to your noodles then. Bye--”

You cut him off before he could leave. “I’d love to!” you replied with a smile.

The sound of a door opening woke you out of your daydream. Park Jin Young entered his office with a smile on his face.

“[Your name]! nice to see you again! Come on, I’ll give you a tour of the building”

You followed him out the door, awkwardly unsure of what to do.

He laughed at your awkwardness. “Relax,” he said, “Now that you are a part of the JYP Family, you can call me oppa”

You smiled, and finally relaxed, “Nae, Park Jin Young ...oppa...” The oppa would take some getting used to.

As he walked you around the building, your face began to light up. Passing by posters of all of those artists you so admired, you couldn’t help but be in awe. The tour was going smoothly until JYP dropped a bomb.

“Let me introduce you to your students,” he said while opening the door to a practice room.

You had assumed your students would be JYP trainees, so you followed him with a little bit of nervousness, but mostly confidence. As soon as you walked in the room and saw your students, that confidence melted into a puddle at your feet and was replaced with nerves and excitement. In front of you stood the artists that were on the posters. In front of you stood your students: 2PM, 2AM, JJ Project, miss A, Wonder Girls, 15&, and Baek Ayeon were waiting inside for you. They greeted you with hugs, something they had been told to do because you were “American” and used to more “American” greetings (not that you minded;D).

JYP left you to get to know your new students. For the next hour, you were allowed to just talk with them. Get to know them. The entire time, that same goofy smile from before was stuck on your face. Things were turning out great.
