Little Quirks

“Well, aren’t you two just adorable?” JoonMyun mused, beaming at MiKyung and ChanYeol.  The former was sitting at her desk, working as usual, but the latter had brought over a chair and was sitting right next to MiKyung so that there was practically no space between them.  Drinking from a carton of banana milk, ChanYeol was constantly peering over the girl’s shoulder with a silly grin plastered to his face.  MiKyung tried her hardest to ignore the other’s presence and the stares from her co-workers, who occasionally laughed and cooed at the pair.

“ChanYeol, go home,” MiKyung muttered under her breath, her eyes focused on the computer screen before her.  ChanYeol pouted and asked why, to which the female replied, “You’re distracting everyone.”  When ChanYeol glanced around the area, the employees looked away, pretending to be working, so the male retorted, tugging at the other’s sleeve,

“No, I’m not.  Everyone’s working.  Look!”

In irritation, MiKyung did a quick scan of the room and found that everyone was avoiding her glance, but she knew they would turn their attention back to her and the author eventually.  With a sigh, she continued typing at her keyboard, momentarily marveling at the fact that ChanYeol was at least able to stay in his chair today.  Ever since they started dating (MiKyung was reluctant to admit the fact), ChanYeol quickly made a habit of visiting the office every day, bringing a different snack on each visit.  During the first week of his visits, the author took the time to greet every employee individually and hold a conversation with them for at least five minutes.  He also inspected the contents of their desks, and he was fascinated with the fabric of the curtains in the head editor’s office for at least fifteen minutes.  On one particular visit, ChanYeol was trying to figure out how to operate the copying machine, and MiKyung had forgotten about his presence until the machine began beeping incessantly and sheets of paper were flying out of the dispenser so quickly that when ChanYeol tried to catch them, he received at least five paper cuts.  MiKyung was just grateful that her boss didn’t ban him from the office—or the building itself, for that matter.  The female editor was also thankful that ChanYeol didn’t like coffee, for he probably would have destroyed the coffee machine as well, and none of her co-workers would appreciate that.

“MiKyung-ah, let’s go eat ice cream,” the author suggested, bouncing up and down in his seat excitedly.  Quickly glancing at him, MiKyung told the man that she was busy and needed to finish her work.  After noticing the other’s crestfallen expression, MiKyung sighed and said they could get ice cream when it was time to go home; ChanYeol flashed his signature grin and remained relatively quiet for the rest of the day.  At this, MiKyung softly smiled and even laughed a little, causing the other editors in the room to gawk in disbelief.

Just as MiKyung promised, the two headed to the familiar ice cream parlor after she finished all her assignments.  She still entrusted the responsibility of choosing the ice creams to ChanYeol, and the latter made sure to exclude any traces of peanuts.  Today, the man had gotten her a waffle cone with lemon ice cream, caramel drizzle, and the usual two cherries on top; as always, he turned the stems inward so that they formed a lopsided heart.  For himself, ChanYeol decided on a more daring combination: plain vanilla ice cream on a waffle cone.  Walking down the sidewalk, ChanYeol looked at MiKyung as she observed her ice cream, then down at her vacant hand.  Shyly, he took her hand in his and looked up at the sky, pretending to admire the architecture of the surrounding skyscrapers.  MiKyung noticed this and casually intertwined their fingers, causing the other to look at her.  ChanYeol immediately grinned once he saw MiKyung smiling, even though her gaze was forward.

The couple decided to take a walk in the park, as cliché as it seemed, and the male entertained MiKyung with stories of his childhood.  According to his accounts, ChanYeol had always been this way—naturally curious about everything and with unique hobbies to boot.  When he was seven years old, he collected geckos in a cardboard box and started bawling when he discovered that his mother threw them out when he returned home from school one Thursday afternoon.  In seventh grade, he overheard a girl in the bathroom asking her friends why yawning was contagious, so he opened the door and began to explain the mechanics of the respiratory and nervous systems.  In his senior year of high school, ChanYeol always carried a bag of citrus fruits to school so that he could place one in everyone’s locker after gym class—he even left a bag outside the girls’ locker room (he had learned not to go inside after what happened five years earlier).  ChanYeol also mentioned that he was often bullied, especially in his later school years, but skimmed over the subject quickly.

“Are you embarrassed of me?” ChanYeol asked as they were sitting on a bench, still holding hands.  The question surprised MiKyung, and she looked at the other, only to find that he was staring at the ground.  Turning her gaze to her outstretched legs, the female answered,

“Yes.  All the time.”  The man frowned, and his shoulders slumped in dejection.  “But I don’t mind.  You are who you are, ChanYeol, and…quite honestly, I can’t do anything about it.  Rather than weird hobbies, I see your actions more as little quirks.  I really do like you, so I don’t want you to change.”  With her hand still in his, MiKyung put their hands in her lap and held his with both her hands, tapping ChanYeol’s fingers as if she were playing a piano.  The older male, gazing at the other, smiled sheepishly, leaned his head on hers, and placed a chaste kiss on her temple.  MiKyung shyly turned her head toward the male’s and quickly pecked his lips; she then placed her head on his shoulder, trying to hide her blushing face in the other’s shirt.  Chuckling lightly, ChanYeol used his free hand to brush MiKyung’s hair out of her face, pushing the stray strands behind her ear.  He noticed MiKyung was smiling (even though she was clearly embarrassed) and couldn’t help but poke the tiny dimple on her cheek.

The two remained in that position for the next hour, just watching people pass by—old people, young people, some families, a group of businessmen.  Soon, the sun began its descent into the horizon, and they enjoyed the many colors in the sky.  The street lamps slowly flickered on, illuminating the park; in the distance, some lamps appeared as tiny, floating orbs, almost like fireflies.  A breeze occasionally floated by, cooling the mid-spring air and causing the branches of overhead trees to softly rustle.  It was a peaceful moment.

"MiKyung-ah?” ChanYeol murmured, breaking the silence.

“Yes, ChanYeol?” the female replied, a small smile still gracing her face.  The male was silent for a moment and briefly wondered if MiKyung could hear his rapidly beating heart.  After a minute, he finally said,

“I love you.”

MiKyung’s smile widened, and she whispered, “I love you, too, ChanYeol.”  Though her voice was just barely audible, ChanYeol heard it clearly and couldn’t help but smile.  Down to the last blade of grass and the dog across the park that wouldn’t stop barking, everything—absolutely everything in that moment—was perfect.

OMG YOU GAIZ.  IT'S OVER.  SOBBING RIGHT NOW.  EXCUSE ME.  *walks away*

*comes back, but still crying*  So...wow, it's really over.  I'm going to miss this couple so much.  I've already been calling them "ChanMi."  ㅠ__ㅠ  It's been a (sort of) long journey, and I'm so thankful you all joined me for it.  I CAN'T EXPRAIN WHAT I FEEEEUUUL.  I imagine this couple will get married in the dorkiest of ways.  ChanYeol will probably forget the ring and use a cheerio or something.  Then MiKyung will hit him for being an idiot but say yes anyway.  QAQ  I shall reply to all comments in the comment box, so please look out for it~

Chapter 7: Ah, the nostalgia! I remember subscribing to this story when it only had about two or three chapters. And today I just had to read it again. It's such a joy to read it, lighthearted and fluffy and a bit of humor to top it off. I just wanted to let you know I'm frequently re-reading this story, because you did such a good job on it! Thank you for the smile you brought to my face <3
