Part 1

Say It

Daehyun had a really bad feeling when he woke up that morning. After they came back from Singapore, the day they got home, he and Youngjae became surprisingly… distant. It especially surprised the others considering the duo had seemed almost inseperable at the beginning of their trip. Yongguk was sure he’d never seen the two so happy or hyper, but when they got back home it was almost like a wall had formed between the two, a wall he hadn’t seen since the two first met each other. It worried him slightly, but he figured out they would work out what was wrong eventually.

Daehyun, on the other hand, although calm on the outside, was a mess on the inside. It had been three weeks since they got back from their trip to Singapore, and Youngjae was still avoiding him like the plague. What worried him though was he wasn’t even sure what Youngjae was mad at him about. He knew it had something to do with the pictures of him and Hyosung being close, after all Youngjae was perfectly fine, even clinging onto him slightly, until he went on the computer after they got back to their dorm and saw the pictures on the internet.

He figured it was because maybe Youngjae liked Hyosung, but didn’t want to tell anyone and seeing Daehyun close to her made him feel betrayed. But even after he explained that he didn’t like her that way, and that Youngjae should go ask her out since it seemed he got jealous of Daehyun, Youngjae still avoided him like he was carrying the kooties or something. It confused him to no end, and even when he would try to find some time to talk to the other alone, Youngjae always somehow managed to get away and run to another member before Daehyun got to him.

He looked at Youngjae, hoping to catch the other looking at him like all the times he did when they were in Singapore, but practically deflated when he saw Youngjae talking animatedly to Jongup. He felt some sort of pain well up in his chest at the sight of Youngjae laughing and sending smiles towards Jongup, but couldn’t really pinpoint what the feeling was. All he knew is that every time he would see the photos or videos of him and Youngjae laughing together, he felt like crying out in frustration. He wanted those times back, he wanted Youngjae back, laughing, making jokes, acting like an idiot, and sending little looks that only Daehyun would understand. Daehyun knew it was rather odd that he felt so possessive and needy for his friend, but figured it was sort of normal. Anyone would want to know why their best friend would be mad at them for almost a whole month. He didn’t know what to do anymore, he said sorry, and even though Youngjae said he wasn’t mad at Daehyun, everyone around them could tell that Youngjae didn’t want to be near Daehyun, and that killed the main vocal on the inside.

But after weeks of being ignored, Daehyun was starting to cope a bit better with it, and got used to the shrugs and few words from Youngjae. But he couldn’t shake the feeling that something really bad was going to happen that day. He was so engrossed in staring at Youngjae, he nearly jumped when Yongguk came into the room.

“Hey, I have some great news that I’m sure you’ll all like, especially you, Youngjae-ah!” Youngjae tilted his head in confusion, and Daehyin found the action much more adorable and appealing than a friend should.

“We’re going to guest on a TV show in a couple of days, and guess who we’ll be guesting with?” Zelo was the first to shout out a random Kpop idol’s name, then followed by an equally excited Himchan. The two then kept going back and forth, guessing random stars, until realization finally hit Daehyun.

“Jay Park…”

“That’s right, Daehyun-ah!” Yongguk smiled brightly, and Youngjae’s eyes widened slightly before a grin spread across his face. As the other members cheered and talked about how excited they were, Daehyun had to force a lopsided smile onto his face. It’s not that he didn’t like Jay Park, in fact he loved his voice and thought he was a really good performer and admired him, but the thing was…

Youngjae really likes him…

Daehyun figured out before when he caught Youngjae singing one of Jay Park’s songs and continued to bug him with questions about it, repeating “Do you love him?” quite often, that the younger male had a crush on the singer. Although Youngjae wouldn’t admit it, he could tell by the slight flush and averted eyes that Youngjae admired the other a little bit more than just a role-model. Daehyun knew he should have been ecstatic about this, since maybe the meeting will lighten up Youngjae’s mood and he’ll finally go back to normal with Daehyun, but he felt that same feeling when he saw Youngjae laughing with Jongup well up in his chest again. Even when he teased the other about it before, that feeling was there, just not as strong as it was now. The thought of Youngjae googly eyeing the man and swooning over him made Daehyun’s skin crawl for reason he couldn’t figure out.

“Waah, aren’t you excited, Daehyun? We’re actually going to meet Jay Park!” Daehyun nearly jumped when Youngjae grabbed onto his arm and squealed happily. Daehyun wanted to jump up and hug the younger man. It had been three weeks since Youngjae had spoken more than two words to him at a time and even touched Daehyun. But knowing that the only reason Youngjae was this happy was because it had to do with Jay Park, and that he was just very excited at the moment, so excited even that he forgot that he was mad at Daehyun for whatevr reason, made Daehyun…angry?

Why should I be angry though? Youngjae’s happy, he even forgot that he’s mad at me, and he gets to meet his crush! I should be happy for him.

But even with that thought in mind Daehyun felt the familiar painful swell in his chest and drop in his stomach.

“Of course I’m excited! This is going to be so much fun!” Daehyun sounded convincing, and it seemed to fool Youngjae, but Daehyun didn’t miss the concerned stares from Yongguk and Himchan. Youngjae beamed happily at him and started to babble to him about how excited he was, and about he wondered if Jay liked his voice, and Daehyun knew he should have been jumping for joy since Youngjae was talking to him and holing onto him, it felt… wrong. This is what Daehyun had been longing for for three weeks, but he didn’t feel happy like he used to when they would talk to each other.

He looked at Youngjae as he continued to talk and tried to figure out what was off.

“-and promise me you won’t mention the whole ‘do you love him’ thing? That was so embarrassing Daehyunnie! Promise me, alright! I don’t want him to think I’m weird-“

Daehyun felt like an idiot when he realized why he felt upset. He didn’t like that the only reason Youngjae was talking to him was because it was about Jay. He didn’t understand why, but the way Youngjae would talk so endearingly about the man made Daehyun…

I do feel angry… but why…

“Are you okay, Daehyun?” Daehyun was snapped out of his thoughts when Youngjae began to squeeze his arm and winced a little.

“Y-youngjae, my arm…”

“Ah, sorry!” Youngjae released his arm and backed up a little. Daehyun feared slightly that Youngjae would go back to the way he was these past weeks but felt just slightly relieved when he saw Youngjae was still smiling brightly at him. But despite the fact that Youngjae was facing him, Daehyun felt like Youngjae wasn’t smiling at him.

He isn’t smiling because of me… he’s smiling because of Jay…

“Ah, look at the time, Junhong-ah, Jongup-ah, time to do homework! Youngjae-ah, can you help them with their homework?”

“Sure, come on guys.” Youngjae practically skipped to their shared room, Junhong and Jongup up trailing behind him. That left Himchan, Yongguk, and Daehyun in the livingroom still.

“Maybe I should help Young-“

“Sit. We need to talk.” The doorway was blocked by Himchan and Daehyun raised an eyebrow at the action. He turned around and gave Yongguk a questioning glance.

“He’s right.”

“I don’t know what you guys are talking about-“

“Daehyun, no matter what you think, I’m not as oblivious as you think. Now sit.” Daehyun figured it was useless to argue so he sat on the couch. He looked up as Yongguk and Himchan stood in front of him.

“So, what’s going on between you and Youngjae-ah?”
