“How do you feel right now?” curious na tanong ni Doc Giselle na currently ay nag-rarounds upang kumustahin si Winter. May hawak hawak itong mga papel sa bisig at may stethoscope na nakasabit sa leeg. Her long brown hair cascaded beautifully over her shoulders on her white coat. 

 

“May masakit pa ba sayo or do you feel anything uncomfortable?”

 

Si Doc Giselle ang official doctor in charge kay Winter while her wife, Karina, was nagbabantay the first day she woke up. Speaking of Karina, she looked so pretty with her casual clothes dahil naging routine na niya na magbantay sa kanya after her shift. 

 

Until now, hindi pa din masyado nag sisink in kay Winter na may asawa na siya. But with this level of dedication na nakikita niya, it’s just hard not to believe it. Hindi niya pa din naalala ang dahilan kung paano siya napunta sa hospital pero Karina told her that she was transferred to Giselle dahil conflict of interest pag siya ang naghandle sa kanya even if Karina was the one who treated her sa emergency room.

 

Best friends si Karina and Giselle kaya naman hindi nag-hesitate si Doc Giselle to take over.

 

“Well, I’m okay now. Mostly may headaches and some muscle strains but that’s expected.” may ngiti na sagot ni Winter since buryong buryo na siya sa hospital since almost a month na din siya doon. Nakakalakad na din siya with a cane ngunit short distances pa lang but she’s more lively now than when she woke up. “Thank you, doc.”

 

“Thank you saan? Your wife would kill me pag di kita pinagaling agad.” pagbibiro ni Giselle kay Karina na currently ay nagbabalat ng tangerines para sa pasyente niya. Parang panda na nga dahil nag 24-hr shift ito tapos inaasikaso pa yung wife niya.

 

“Gigi!” gigil na saad ni Karina na tinawanan lang naman ng doktora.

 

Nasanay na din naman si Winter sa banter ng dalawa dahil ganito talaga sila kaclose. Actually, nastarstruck nga din si Winter kasi ang ganda din ni Doc Giselle like her wife pero syempre mas maganda ang misis niya. 

 

Naks, misis.

 

The more she says it, the more na mas appealing sa kanya yung idea.

 

Kaya di na din siya masyado nag question if whirlwind romance nga and pinakasalan niya agad si Karina noon (kahit di niya pa talaga naalala.) Katarina Yu na yun, tatanggi pa ba siya? 

 

She was the whole package and the ideal woman for her.

 

Isa pa, napaka understanding lang ni Doktora when she lost her memory of her. Napakacool pa nga when she said, “we can make new ones, wifey.” 

 

E di ayun, kinilig ang baklang pasyente.

 

“Oo na, oo na.” na cut off ang pag space out ni Winter sa boses ni Giselle na natatawa tawa pa tapos nagseryoso na din ng tinignan si Winter. 

 

“Okay, your chart looks good, maganda na din result ng lab results mo so you just have to continue the therapies at home which I’m sure Doc Rina would make sure of. Congratulations, you are getting discharged today!” maligayang saad ni Winter sa kanya.

 

“Talaga?!” excited na tanong ni Winter.

 

Sa totoo lang kasi ay gustong gusto niya na din madischarge. Bukod sa hindi naman biro ang hospital bills na semi-covered ng HMO, nag-aalala na din siya sa hands-on wife niya na hindi na halos nagpapahinga mabantayan lang siya. At least sa bahay, may maayos na kama na tutulugan si Karina. Uncomfortable pa din kaya ang hospital couch. Pero nasabi din naman ni Karina before na mas comfy yung couch niya kesa yung break room ng hospital.

 

Anyway, lalabas na siya!

 

“Wow, excited na excited wifey?” natatawang pang tease naman ni Karina.

 

“Syempre, I can experience my wife’s cooking na.” ganting biro ni Winter, easing into her situation a lot better than expected. To be fair, it was Karina who was hands-on with her from the start. She had her legal secretary come over at least once a week, a brief phone call sa ate niya na nasa States as a singer then her parents were busy doing business travels. 

 

But mostly, it was Karina attending to her needs.

 

She can function well as an adult but Winter had certain trouble with remembering people and some scenes in her life. Bukod kay Karina, she had to be reintroduced to her secretary though she remembered her family well.

 

If she has the correct hunch, siguro almost 3 years worth of memories din ang hindi niya maalala. Basta ang alam niya, partner siya sa isang law firm sa Philippines, specializing in domestic cases and everything else was blank, lalo na yung accident. 

 

For now, Karina mentioned that she won’t talk about it unless she remembers a part of it. As a medical practitioner, ayaw daw niya na matrigger ang trauma niya and maforce siya into remembering everything so they’ll take it slow.

 

Then again, it wasn’t a bad position to be in.

 

Despite not remembering, Winter was just grateful to be given a solid support system from her wife. She married well if she’d say so herself. Kahit na mahirap ang situation nila at minsan nagi-guilty siya, Karina would always assure her na she will be there and that she has nothing to be apologizing for.

 

Ang swerte niya lang talaga.

 

“Now, I don’t wanna comment on someone’s cooking. But, go get out of here.” pabirong sabi ni Giselle then excused herself,” I have more patients to look after. Karina, you can do the paperwork within the day once you’re ready.” paalala na lang ni Giselle.

 

Nagkatinginan naman ang mag-asawa nang tuluyan ng umalis si Doc at nasaraduhan na yung pinto. 

 

“I’m finally free, wifey.” masaya na sabi ni Winter kay Karina na halos mapunit na ang labi sa lawak ng ngiti niya. Lumabas pa nga ang chin dimples niya. 

 

“Yes, you are…after the paperwork.” paalala ni Karina as she stood up and showed the tangerines. “Eat this, wifey. I’ll take care of the discharge form.” sabi nito as she gently rubbed Winter’s cheeks with the unscented hand. 

 

“Okay.” nakangising sagot ni Winter tapos nagnguso to ask for a kiss. 

 

Nadinig na naman ni Winter ang giggle ni Karina that she had grown fond of. 

 

“Ikaw talaga.” Karina pinched her cheek muna before leaning in to give her a peck on the lips. 

 

As major bading na crush na crush ang wifey niya, it was Winter who pulled Karina’s shirt to deepen the kiss and opened . The doctor accepted the invitation and nibbled on her lower lip. 

 

Nung mawalan na siya ng hininga sa kaharutan niya, that’s when Winter let go of her wife.

 

'Ang sarap! Mas masarap sa tangerines.'

 

“Go na wifey~” may pagpilantik pa ng mata na sabi ni Winter as she started eating the fruit in her hand. Naiiling naman na napapangiti pa din si Karina habang pulang pula ang mukha hanggang tenga.

 

“I’ll be back.” cool na cool na sagot nito then she also went to the door para makauwi na sila.

“I wanna work na, wifey. Kaya ko na naman.” pag sasulk ni Winter sa sasakyan as Karina explained the conditions of her being discharged. Kabilang na doon ang schedule for follow-up checkups, therapies, and medication. She was also subjected to 1 month of unpaid mandatory rest upon the doctor’s order. 

 

“Hindi naman pwedeng ikaw lang ang nagtatrabaho for us.”

 

Winter’s pride is bruised. 

 

Her hospital bill piled up and the majority of it, si Karina ang nagbayad, minus HMO and Philhealth coverage. Her bank account was left untouched kahit may ipon siya since her wife said na she doesn’t want to take her money.

 

Muntik na nga sila magtalo about that since para sa kanya naman ang gastos. It spurred her to ask why they don’t have a joint account in the first place and Karina patiently explained na they trust each other that much and respected their individuality with finances.

 

Karina did say na they can create one when they’re ready for kids.

 

So dejectedly, Winter backed down and settled with that compromise pero parang hindi niya naman ata kaya na one month din siyang papalamunin ng asawa niya. Especially that she does have work to get back to. Thankfully ay understanding ang management ng law firm to grant her unpaid leave kaso si Winter ang umaangal this time.

 

“Wifey… I know you’re feeling much better now pero you’re still recovering.” Karina patiently explained as she maneuvered the vehicle expertly sa traffic lights. 

 

“Besides, you can be a pretty housewife for a month. I can afford it naman.” confident pang pag reason nito.

 

“B-but…” tatanggi pa sana si Winter kaso natalo na siya ng magandang puppy eyes ni Karina.

 

“I just want you to recover fully first. Then you can go back to work, okay?” pag negotiate pa nito with a loving gaze. Nanlalambot na naman yung tuhod ni Winter, literal and figuratively. 

 

Magpuppy eyes ba naman sa kanya.

 

‘Ano namang laban ko jan?’ 

 

Bilang isang lawyer, Winter knows that she’s a master of negotiations and she’s someone who wouldn’t back down so easily. In fact, she can probably find a way to make this conversation turn in her favor. 

 

Pero sa isang Karina Yu lang pala siya titiklop. 

 

Or more precisely dun sa mga mata niyang nangungusap.

 

Winter heaved a defeated sigh.

 

“Fine…fine…but I can read some case notes?” pag haggle niya pa, knowing na she’ll be very bored sa bahay nila. Of course, she’ll do chores naman pero she wants to be more productive outside of domestic tasks.

 

It was Karina’s turn to sigh.

 

“Just don’t exhaust yourself too much…hindi ka pa fully healed.” paalala pa nito at tuluyan na nga nagpark ang Blue Ford Ranger nito sa designated parking lot niya. 

 

“I’m sorry if I’m being too much, wifey but I don’t want to risk losing you.” Karina’s eyes flashed vulnerability na nagpakurot din sa puso niya. 

 

Now, Winter felt guilty for being makulit.

 

She couldn’t imagine how hard it was for Karina to save her life in that emergency room. Siguro nga if pinagbaliktad ang situation, baka nga mas malala pa siya. With that, she instinctively took Karina’s small fingers and brought it to her lips.

 

“I’m sorry I was being stubborn.” mapagkumbaba na apologize ni Winter sa wife niya. “We’re good, hm? I can’t wait to see our house.” she said with a huge smile plastered on her face. Nagbrighten na ang expression sa mukha ni doc and unbuckled her seatbelt to assist her.

 

“I understand, wifey. We’re good.” pag assure ni Karina as she quickly intertwined their fingers. After giving her a chaste kiss on the back of her hand, bumaba na siya sa sasakyan as Winter looked around. Karina drove them to a known high-end condo unit in Pasig. 

 

Perfect ang location for the two of them since her work is nearby while Winter’s office was also a 30 minute drive away when traffic jams are not being ty. Anyway, since wala pa din naman sa condition si Winter to drive again, hindi na muna nila inasikaso ang pagpapalit ng kotse niya.

 

Kinuha muna ni Karina ang wheelchair ni Winter sa likod and inayos ito. Binuksan na niya ang pinto sa passenger side and assisted Winter out of the car. Though she can still considerably walk short distances, nag-rent muna sila ng wheelchair to not restrain her muscles. 

 

Once settled na ang asawa niya, Karina grabbed Winter’s duffle bag and cane at binitbit ito sa left hand. The right hand was busy assisting the wheelchair papunta sa elevator. Winter was just smiling until narating nila ang 2 bedroom unit sa 11th floor. 

 

The unit number was 1101.

 

‘Welcome home!’

 

Of course, the place doesn’t scream familiarity at all. Winter felt as if it was her first time stepping foot in this place. The first thing that greeted her was the kitchen island and the cozy kitchen beside the door. May squared glass table din that served as a dining table surrounded by 4 chairs.

 

The walls were painted with baby blue and white na nagbigay ng cool homey vibes. Then there was the general bathroom going straight to the living room. Mukhang malambot ang couch and complete ang sala set with DVD player, flat screen TV, and some albums and movie collection. 

 

May malaking salamin sa dingding and that showed their picturesque reflection. If they were starring in a movie, sure si Winter na people would like their loveteam. 

 

Bagay na bagay kasi ang height difference and face nila.

 

Pareho silang maganda. 

 

Beyond that is the curtained glass wall overlooking the Pasig River and the beautiful sunset. The master bedroom is on the left side tapos nasa right yung smaller room. There’s also another door that leads to the washing area.

 

“Welcome home, wifey.” Karina verbalized her thoughts with a smile. Medyo awkward pa nga but Winter laughed it off. Sabihin na natin na unfamiliar yung lugar but she likes it here. 

 

Probably because Karina’s presence gives her comfort. Kahit naman sa hospital, mas gumagaan ang pakiramdam niya pag nakikita niya ito.

 

“Now, which bedroom do you wanna take?” tanong ni Karina sa kanya. Kumunot naman ang noo ni Winter sa tanong ng asawa niya. Oo, hindi sila nagtatabi sa hospital kasi ang liit ng hospital bed, pero bakit naman hanggang bahay hindi sila magkatabi?

 

Para ano pang mag-asawa sila if they don’t cohabitate in bed?

 

“Hindi ba tayo magtatabi?” nagtatakang tanong niya dito. She saw how Karina nervously laughed and avoided her gaze. Kitang kita ang pamumula ng pisngi at tenga nito dahil masyado siyang maputi tapos ang dark pa ng itim na itim buhok.

 

“I just thought na…you might be uncomfy pa since you don’t remember me pa.” Karina answered with a lip bite. Napalunok naman si Winter dun sa expression at buti na lang nakaupo pa siya sa wheelchair kasi baka natumba pa siya sa panlalambot.

 

‘Ang ganda ganda kasi ng asawa niya.’

 

“But I want you beside me.” paglalambing niya dito tapos nag puppy eyes ng tumingin na to sa kanya. Nakita niya naman kung paanong napangiti ito lalo and ruffled Winter’s ginger-colored hair. 

 

“Okay, big baby.”

 

At dahil doon, dinala na nga siya ni Karina sa master’s bedroom upang magpahinga. Karina assisted her para makaupo sa kama tapos nilagay na yung wheelchair sa gilid. Malawak ang master bedroom at may wall cabinet na malaki.

 

May another set ng TV sa wall at another set ng full body mirror. May curtain din dito na tinatakluban yung glass door papuntang veranda. May sarili ding banyo ang bedroom na to na may bathtub. 

 

Tahimik sila pareho pero sanay na si Winter sa comfortable silence between them. Inaayos na kasi ni Karina ang drawer upang ilagay ang mga damit niya. Nang tuluyan ng mabuksan ang cabinet, nagtaka si Winter kasi parang wala naman siyang miski isang damit sa loob.

 

Hindi niya style yung mga damit.

 

Based on what she remembers, comfy style ang gusto niya so she liked oversized shirts, flannels, and plain t-shirts. Tapos usually naman sa office, white polo shirt, pencil skirt or slacks then coat lang siya. Yung wardrobe currently ay puno ng crop tops, doctor’s coat ni Karina, and some y dresses.

 

“Wifey, wala ba akong gamit dito?” hindi niya mapigilan na magtanong. Napapitlag si Karina sa gulat at nabitawan pa nga yung black t-shirt ni Winter. Mabilis din naman yumuko si Doc upang kunin ang nalalaglag niya.

 

“K-kakalipat lang kasi natin, wifey.” medyo fidgety na sagot nito.

 

“And puro sayo lang yung nadala natin?” nagtataka pa din na tanong ni Winter. Hindi pa rin kasi nagmake sense sa kanya. Lumingon naman si Karina bigla then answered sadly as she took a seat beside Winter. 

 

“You were on the way here when it happened, wifey.” 

 

Winter remembered na wala daw naiwan sa gamit niya sa kotse when the accident happened. Ilang beses din kasi siyang kinausap ng pulis kaya nagtanong tanong din siya. Bilang isang lawyer ay naturally curious siya sa state ng stuff niya na under investigation.

 

“Oh.” for some reason, parang bumigat ang pakiramdam niya. “Well, let’s shop for my stuff instead...using my card.” offer ni Winter upang mabago ang topic nila. 

 

Ayaw niya na uncomfortable si Karina seeing that her wife has barely recovered sa accident.

 

For some reason, Winter also felt scared to find out more.

“Good morning, wifey!” maligayang bati ni Winter kay Karina as soon as the latter woke up. She woke up really early to prepare a small surprise for her wife. 5 days na silang magkasama sa bahay and she has been practicing her walking.

 

Mas mataas na ang stamina niya lately and her therapist actually complimented her drive to recover agad. Kaya naman she wanted to reciprocate her wife’s effort through simple housewife chores like this.

 

“Wala ka na sa bed.” parang naaping bata na whine ni Karina sa kanya sabay yakap sa likod niya. Sobrang nacute-an lang si Winter kay doc na halatang kakagising lang dahil sabog pa yung buhok niyang makapal at halos naniningkit pa ang mata pagkaantok. Suot suot niya pa nga yung partner na dino pajamas niya.

 

“I prepared breakfast for you kasi…lagi kang umaalis ng di kumakain.” gentle na sabi ni Winter sa asawa niya, half scolding na din because of her unhealthy lifestyle. 

 

Karina likes her sleep kaya naman she would sacrifice her eating time para makapagluto for Winter’s breakfast and lunch then drive to work ng 6am with packed food. Tapos uuwi din siya ng 5pm na may dala ng cooked dinner or ingredients for dinner. Still, Winter worried na hindi niya naman nakakakain on time sa hospital dahil laging busy ito.

 

“Though it’s just some toast, brewed coffee, and naka ready na peanut butter and jelly since...” Winter looked at her weak knees sadly. Karina nodded in understanding since handicapped pa nga si Winter with her cane.

 

Natouch naman siya sa sweetness ni attorney. 

 

“It’s perfect, wifey. Thank you…” grateful na sagot ni Karina as she rewarded Winter with a forehead kiss. Hindi naman umangal yung isa kahit na may morning breath pa si doc since kakagising niya lang and she immediately looked for her wife. “I was worried na wala ka na sa bed.”

 

“Sorry na, I’ll put a note next time.” Winter gave her signature puppy eyes kaya naman lumambot pa lalo si Karina.

 

“You better.” she pinched Winter’s cheeks.

 

“Let’s eat?” aya ni Winter while showing off the cute decoration of the dining table. Naexcite naman si Karina kaya gigil na pinugpog ng halik ang asawa niya while muttering countless thank you.

 

Then she got her phone para ipost yung breakfast surprise ng wife niya sa social media.

 

Speaking of social media, wala din nun si Winter dahil hindi talaga siya mahilig even before the accident. She looked up her old account na di niya na alam ang password tapos puro tagged photos lang ang andun and work related announcement. 

 

Hindi na din siya nagbother irecover.

 

Though dahil medyo active ang wife niya, she’s considering a change of mind sa aspect na yun.

 

Karina is someone who deserved to be flexed anyway. 

 

Nang makaupo na sila, nagpalaman na si Winter sa tinapay. She started with putting peanut butters sa left then jelly sa right. “I know you like your coffee black so I made it black for you.” sabi niya pa. 

 

Ang lawak naman ng ngiti ni Karina sa sweet na asawa niya. Extra points for remembering her preference. Ininom naman niya yung kape and nodded in approval since it was as she liked. Inabot niya na din ang natapos ng batch ng P&J.

 

“Thanks, wifey. 1pm yung appointment mo sa therapy no?” tanong ni doc after ngumuya.

 

“Opo. Then attend ako ng online meeting sa office.” Winter answered casually.

 

It has been their routine to have light conversations every morning pag naghahanda ng food si Karina sa table. Since Winter gave her time to sit and talk, she intends to bond with her wife muna before taking a shower.

 

“Hindi ka ba ma-stress agad nun?” Karina worriedly queried once she heard her plans. Normally, Winter would just have the therapist over and do some light chores like wiping ng mga tables.

 

Then she’d spend her time watching movies, reading her law books, and getting sleep. May side effect kasi yung ibang high dose medicine ni Winter to make her fall asleep easily. But she’ll be off meds soon. 

 

“It’s just assigning cases, wifey. Mas okay na alam ko na what to expect when I’m back.” Winter assured with an excited smile. Siya na din ang nagbalik ng cover sa mga palaman and started munching on her share of food.

 

“Just…take it easy, okay?” paalala pa ni Karina.

 

“Yes, boss!” May pa salute pa na sagot ni Winter tapos wink.

 

“Baliw!” natawa naman si Karina sa inasta ng asawa niya. Kala mo sundalo talaga eh.

 

“San ang duty mo today?” curious na tanong ni Winter. 

 

Karina is actually a doctor at 3 hospitals. Nagleave muna siya sa ibang hospital niya last month so she can take care of Winter but since okay na nga siya, she’s back to handling all of her load sa mga hospital. 

 

The doctor wasn’t sure either so kinuha niya yung work phone niya to check her calendar. Naka-sync yung calendar niya sa mga secretaries niya per hospital so they knew kung saan siya pupunta each day.

 

“Half day sa Ortigas then half day sa Cainta, wifey.” she answered then frowned a bit dahil nag-skim na din siya ng updates ng pupuntahan niya. May mga follow up checkup kasi siya and some are early. “Do you want any pasalubong mamaya?”

 

“Just be home safe and sound, that’s all I need. And wag ka mag-skip ng meals.” paalala din ni Winter sa stubborn na doctor. She found out how workaholic Karina is when they exchange messages and past 2 pm or 3 pm na kumakain si doc.

 

“Yes, wifey. Ikaw din ah. Drink your meds and don’t exhaust yourself too much.” ganting reminder ni doc. Winter can also be makulit lalo na pag nalilibang na siya masyado sa binabasa niyang law books.

 

“Got it!” may pag-nod pa ito tapos nagpakita ng dimples. Nagswoon naman si Karina doon. “And wifey?”

 

“Hmm?” Karina hummed as she ate another piece of sandwich.

 

“Selfies please?” cute na request nito. There are times kasi na randomly nagsesend ng selfie si Karina when she’s updating her wife. Lalo na if walang masyadong pasyente sa emergency department at tapos na siya sa rounds.

 

“Ganyan mo ba ko ka crush wifey?” pang-aasar pa ni doc though she was genuinely delighted.

 

“Syempre naman, si Doc Katarina Yu-Kim kaya ang asawa ko. Malamang patay na patay ako sayo.” proud na sagot ni Winter while staring at her lovely wife’s eyes. Sobrang smitten talaga siya kay Karina kahit everyday na sila magkasama.

 

“B-bolera ka talaga, Attorney Winter Kim.” mautal utal na sagot ni Karina and inubos na ang kape to hide her blushing cheeks. While she really likes how sweet Winter is, ayaw niya naman magmukhang simp.

 

“Just stating the truth, my lovely wife.” may playful wink na sabi nito.

 

“Oo na.” helpless na sagot ni Karina.

 

Needless to say, pulang pula ang mukha ni Karina ng tumayo na siya to prepare for work. After shower, napangiti na naman siya nung nakaready na yung work clothes and doctor coat niya sa bed. 

 

Winter deserved those goodbye kisses na may pahabol pa when Winter walked her to the door.

“W-wifey…” humahagulhol na bungad ni Karina as soon as she came in sa bahay nila. Nabitawan ni Winter yung vacuum na gamit niya upang maglinis. Ang cool lang kasi kumpleto sila ng gamit kaya pag need niya ng break sa pagbabasa, nag-aayos na lang siya ng bahay.

 

Dali dali niyang nilapitan si Karina kahit na iika ika pa ang paa niya. Agad niyang inagaw ang bag na dinadala nito sa work at siya na din ang nagsabit ng doctor coat nito sa backrest ng dining table. 

 

“What’s wrong?” nag-aalalang tanong niya sa asawa niya.

 

First time niya ata nawitness si Karina na umiiyak. Or, magaling lang talaga ito magtago ng pag-iyak sa kanya since she needs to be strong for them nung nasa hospital siya. Namumula ang mata nito at namamaga pa.

 

Gayunpaman, ang ganda pa din niya with her body fit scrub na color dark blue.

 

“I-I couldn’t save her.” nauutal pang banggit nito. Namumula na din ang ilong niya kakaiyak tapos yumakap agad siya ng mahigpit sa asawa niya. Winter guided them papunta sa couch upang hindi sa kanya fully nakatuon ang body weight ni Karina. Hindi pa ganun kataas ang stamina niya. “She was so young, wifey. She had a bright future ahead of her.” 

 

Naguguluhan man ay tinulungan ni Winter na magpunas ng luha ang asawa niya gamit ang hinlalaki niya. Hiyanaan niya lang din to na ilabas yung nararamdaman niya habang nakakapit sa loose na puting t-shirt niya.

 

Everytime na uuwi si Karina, madami siyang baon na kwento about sa hospital sa mga patient niya. Pati nga mga affair ng nurses alam niya pati issue sa HR. Bilang marites din si Winter, nakikinig lang siya tapos kung may legal implications, nagshare na din siya.

 

Ganun ang bonding nila.

 

Pero first time ata na sobrang distraught si Karina sa naexperience niya.

 

“Sige lang….ikwento mo lang, wifey.” supportive na sabi ni Winter habang hinihimas ang likod ni Karina. Syempre may kasama ng pagsinghot yun sa asawa niya. Nasabi niya na ba na mahilig sa panglalaking pabango si Karina?

“May aksidente sa C-5 tapos dinala sila sa hospital. The ER was hectic and I was assisting at least 2-3 patients na sunod sunod. And I got to treating this young teenager... I heard she was a running salutatorian sa junior high nila and I couldn’t save her. I could have tried to revive her pero unresponsive na talaga.” sunod sunod na kwento nito kaya natigil ang distraction niya sa mabangong amoy niya.

 

Nakatulala na din ito ngayon as if she was reliving the experience in her mind. Ramdam niya kung paanong nanginig ang katawan ni Karina sa bisig niya. Winter can only rub her back slowly and give her gentle pecks sa noo.

 

“Wifey, it’s not your fault.” sabi niya to comfort her wife.

Winter was sure that Karina did her best sa emergency room. Nakita niya yun kung paano siya nito kinalinga the whole time na nasa hospital siya. She had first hand experience kung gano kabusisi ito sa medical needs niya.

 

So she can confidently state that.

 

“Maybe I could have done better.” disappointed na saad nito. Bakas sa mukha niya kung paanong dismayado siya sa naging ganap ngayong araw. Winter took a deep breath as she lifted Karina’s chin so she could stare into her eyes.

 

“Wifey…I’m sure you already did your best. And the teenager knows that.” Winter assured once again, her eyes gleaming with appreciation for the woman who loved her job so much. She wanted to convey the message as genuine as possible and she was hoping that her expressive eyes would do the honor for her. 

 

“I’m proud of you, wifey.”

 

Lalo naman naluha si Karina tapos suminghot na din dahil medyo nabablock na yung ilong niya ng sipon. She hid her face sa dibdib ni Winter lalo and curled up like a baby. Hinayaan lang naman siya nung isa.

 

“Sorry wifey…it’s just hard to accept stuff like this.” muffled na sabi ni doc.
