Oreo Cheesecake

Sweet as Sugar

Throughout his life, Minho never forgot to bring his homework even once. He used to prepare every things he needed to bring the night before. So, Minho was even more surprised than his supervisor when he found out that he forgot to bring his USB. This was kind of serious, because the important file needed for today's meeting with their client was there.

Minho had considered to come back home to get his USB, but it would take too much time because it took almost an hour to get home, even when using taxi. So, Minho had no choice except to get help from his housemate. He contacted the first person who came to mind, who was no other than Taemin. Luckily, Taemin only had afternoon class that day.

It took exactly 53 minutes for Taemin to reach Minho's client's office. He was greeted by Minho who was already waiting at the lobby as soon as he arrived.

"Thanks, Tae. I don't know what to do without you," Minho said gratefully when Taemin passed the USB to him.

"Right, you can't, Hyung," Taemin , looking so adorable that Minho couldn't help but reach out to mess the shorter guy's hair.

"Do you need to go to the college soon? If not, wait here. I'll finish before 12 and I'll treat you lunch then."

"Yeay, free lunch! Buy me something expensive!" Taemin looked at Minho with his sparkling eyes.

Minho only laughed. He messed Taemin's hair once more, earning a whine from the younger guy, before he headed inside.

The meeting was so boring and the client was unbearably hard to be pleased, but the mere thought of having lunch with Taemin was able to make Minho smile throughout.

"This is bad, I'm afraid I'll fall asleep throughout today's lecture. I'm too full," Taemin rubbed his a-little-protruding-stomach as he walked out of the restaurant's door that Minho had been holding open for him. Meanwhile, the taller guy smiled widely as he let go of the door. Seeing Taemin being full and happy gave another type of satisfaction for Minho.

The two agreed to walk a bit to Minho's client's office to help them disgesting all of the food they had gulped down earlier, and then Taemin would take a taxi to his college there. Excited chatter filled the air non-stop, while bright smiles were engraved on both of their faces. Minho couldn't believe his grave mistake was actually a blessing in disguise. It had been too long since he could spend times with Taemin like this.

"Minho?" out of nowhere, a familiar woman's voice interrupted their conversation.

Minho and Taemin immediately turned around. The two friends went surprised for different reasons as they faced a beautiful middle-aged woman with a young man behind her, both dressed professionally, and obviously, expensively.

"Mom," Minho unconsciously called out the woman. "What are you doing here?"

"'Mom'?!" Taemin turned to Minho, mouth went agape in shock.

"Hahaha," Minho laughed awkwardly. "Taemin, please meet my Mom. Mom, this is my junior from college, Lee Taemin."

Taemin bowed and smiled hesitantly to the woman in front of him. "Hello, Mrs. Choi. My name is Lee Taemin."

"Oh, you are Taemin?" Mrs. Choi smiled knowingly while sent a playful stare to Minho. Minho could only pray inside that his Mom wouldn't say anything stupid to Taemin.

"Mom, what are you doing here?" Minho quickly said before his Mom could say anything.

"I had just had a lunch with my client around here. You?"

"I visited Vision Group today with Mr. Ahn. I forgot something so Taemin delivered it to me," Minho explained.

"Is that so? Why were you bothering people like this?" Mrs. Choi scolded Minho.

Minho instantly defended himself, "It took too much time to go back to take it."

"That's why," Mrs. Choi folded her arms in front of her chest, went into a scolding mode, "I told you to just go back to our home, didn't I? It's so much closer to work and your clients' office."

"Mom," Minho's tone implied that he didn't want to talk about it.

Mrs. Choi knew it well, so she decided to let it go. Instead, she decided to turn to the uncomfortable Taemin, "Have you had lunch, dear?"

"Yes, Ma'am. Minho treated me lunch just now," Taemin answered as polite as he could.

"At least I taught you manner well," Mrs. Choi said to Minho. Before his young son could protest, Mrs. Choi said to Taemin, "Then let me treat you some dessert, Taemin-ah."

"It's okay, Ma'am," Taemin tried to reject.

"Please, I won't take a no as answer. My son here had troubled you.," Mrs. Choi stared at Taemin so sincerely that Taemin couldn't deny it.

Then, everything just happened too fast. Mrs. Choi led them to the cafe nearby which she claimed as a very famous one in the area, while Mr. Jang, Mrs. Choi's secretary, excused himself to just wait at the car.

Minho closely listened to his friend and his Mom conversation. He felt a little relieved because his Mom just cheerfully asked about Taemin's study and his internship plan. She even offered Taemin to do his internship at her office. Minho secretly hoped Taemin would do it.

The talk was cut off when they arrived at the cafe. The young guys let Mrs. Choi to choose the seat and wait, while they ordered. As soon as Mrs. Choi was gone, Taemin quickly turned to face Minho, asking for explanation.

"Did you really never say that your Mom is the mighty Attorney Han Sung Hee, a.k.a the owner of the law firm you work for now, or you did tell me but I missed it somehow?"

Minho scratched the back of his head and smiled sheepishly, "I never tell anyone."

"Why?"

"Just...I don't want to get any unnecessary attention just because my Mom is a famous person in the law world," Minho sighed. "Even the people at the firm don't know the fact that I'm the son of their boss."

There was a brief silence between them, before Taemin sighed as well, "I get it. Even without that fact, you're already tiringly famous."

"I'm sorry for not telling you."

"I did feel betrayed but I told you right, I understand," Taemin pouted, but he didn't look angry. The younger's reaction made Minho smile a bit. He was always so understanding that Minho didn't know if he actually deserved it, especially when he was being a total jerk to Taemin when the first time they met.

The line wasn't too long that soon it was their turn to order. After ordering, they moved to the side near the pick up area, enjoying the comfortable silence between them while waiting for their drinks. Although, all of sudden, Taemin gasped, breaking the silence, and hand gripping Minho's arm tightly.

"Why? What's wrong, Taemin?" Minho asked worriedly.

Taemin looked up to look at Minho's in the eyes, "If your mother is the Han Sung Hee, does it mean your father is the Choi Sang Woo?"

Minho didn't respond for a while, before he pushed Taemin lightly, "You scared me! I thought you're having a seizure or anything!"

Ignoring Minho's scold, Taemin asked again, "Is the best-seller mystery-crime writer, Choi Sang Woo, really your father?"

"Oh, well...I guess everyone know that Attorney Han Sung Hee's husband is the writer Choi Sang Woo," Minho avoided Taemin's stare.

"Not fair!" Taemin punched Minho's arm, which wasn't really hurt but Minho knew he shouldn't say that to Taemin. "If I knew, I'd pester you to bring me to meet him! You know he is my favourite author!"

Minho laughed, "Hey, just three months ago you thanked me like crazy because I gifted you the first edition of Dad's novel."

"Well, now I think of it, it's not difficult at all for you, is it? You're his son after all."

"Ouch, how cold," Minho placed his palms on his left chest, pretending to be hurt. "It's difficult as well, you know. I stole it from my Dad's study."

"What? Choi Minho, you're crazy!" Taemin went wide-eyed, before he punched Minho's arm again, earning another laughter from the older guy.

"But...." Taemin started wondering again.

"Hmm?"

"If you're that rich, why did you take a part time job back then?" Taemin asked Minho again curiously.

"Ah, that," Minho said as if he just remembered about it now. "That's because..."

"Because?" Taemin pressed.

"Because..."

"Order No. 169!"

"That's ours," Taemin quickly went to pick up their orders. He took the tray of their drinks while Minho took the tray of their desserts. "Let's go, your Mom has been waiting for long," Taemin quickly walked to look for Mrs. Choi with Minho just followed him from behind.

For a moment, Minho glanced at the desserts on the tray he held.

Oreo cheesecake and tiramisu.

"This is your oreo cheesecake and tiramisu."

"Thank you."

Minho stirred his hot americano without purpose, staring at Taemin who was smiling brightly to Kim Jongin, the waiter as well as Minho's junior and Taemin's classmate, who served them.

"So, is he the reason you keep hanging out here?" Minho asked, tried to sound non-chalant.

"I'm contributing to the sales," Taemin reasoned as he took a bite of his oreo cheesecake. "And the cake here is insanely good."

"Pssh," Minho snickered. "The cafe in front of the college is so much better."

"Well, it's too crowded there. This place is new so there's less people," Taemin reasoned again.

"You mean, there is no people," Minho's eyes immediately looked around, to emphasize his words.

"That's why I told you I'm contributing to the sales!"

"That's why I asked you why you do it!"

Taemin sighed. "You know that I got the scholarship this term, right?"

Okay, this wasn't the start of the story Minho expected. He didn't know the connection of Taemin's scholarship and his new habit of visiting this new cafe.

"I never succeeded to get it before. Jongin was always top of the class."

"And so?"

"So I felt bad."

"Why?" Minho still didn't understand. "It's not like you steal it or anything. You became the top of the class this year."

"I know..." Taemin whined. "I know it. It's just...I apply to the scholarship just because. Just because! Like some kind of achievement. Yes, I do have limited allowance and my family isn't rich but it's not like my family can't afford my tuition or anything."

"Jongin's family is rich," Minho folded his arms, annoyed because he still didn't get it.

"Was," Taemin corrected. "No one really knew, and I also just found out, that his family went bankrupt just before he entered college. That's why he applied to scholarship. And worked part-time. But he took more jobs nowadays, including this one, because his sister will enter college soon. That's why his grade kept falling."

"He came second after you, though," Minho stated flatly.

"But still no scholarship!" Taemin buried his face on his arms on top of the table, sounded very frustrated. "Because of me who applied to the scholarship with no reason."

Minho sighed. His body reacted faster than his mind, that his hands already caressed Taemin's smooth hair without him realizing it. "Still not your fault, Taemin," Minho said gently.

Taemin looked up at him and said, "I tried to give the scholarship to him, but he got angry. He said I rightfully obtained it and he didn't want to be pitied."

"Well, he got the point."

"That's why...." Taemin sat up. "I still feel bad so I kept coming here. I heard they're going to close it soon if they have no customer."

Hearing Taemin's reason, Minho couldn't help but to give Taemin an endearing look. "Aw, our kind-hearted Taemin," Minho messed Taemin's hair.

"Hyung!" Taemin quickly tidy back his hair.

"Anyway," Taemin started to talk again out of nowhere, "Don't you think Jongin is very cool?"

"Cool?" Minho raised his left eyebrow.

"Yes! He works hard for his sister and family, but still manage to study well. He's very responsible, hard-working, and smart. Isn't he very cool?" Taemin asked Minho excitedly, which Minho responded with a half-hearted 'yeah' while his eyes threw dagger towards the oreo cheesecake in front of him.

The oreo cheesecake on the tray reminded Minho of the past. Minho remembered he applied to be a part timer at the same cafe after that. The spreaded news of the famous Minho worked there, added by the discovery of handsome Jongin who also worked there, brought a lot of customers. Although Minho finally quit when he needed to do his internship, in the end, the cafe became very famous even until now.

"Hyung, come on!" Taemin's impatient voice made Minho realize he had stopped walking.

"I'm coming," Minho said. His steps followed Taemin's fast walk, his eyes adhered on Taemin's back.

A small smile was on Minho's face, remembering Taemin's question before.

Why did you take a part time job back then?

"It's because of you, silly."
