Clumsiness 101

I'm Not Her Type
Please Subscribe to read the full chapter

Mina is adored by everyone, always treated special, and has always been at the top of their list. These are nothing new to her, in fact ever since she was a child she has always been liked and wanted. And every single time Mina felt it, she always loved it. She loves the fame, respect and power that come along with the adoration they have for her. It is pleasing, satisfying, and fulfilling. It is where her ego is rooted.

Mina is rather confident, a bit conceited yet still maintaining her modesty, about everything that she is and everything she has. She could easily sway anyone she wants and they would instantly be fawning over her. That is how it has been, how it has always been. That is how it works… how it was supposed to work until she showed up in her dorm.

"I still can't believe I'm not her type?!" Mina says, fuming.

"We're still on that subject?" the other girl sighs, and the tone, frankly, is quite offending. Mina would have been offended if she wasn’t too attached to a much more important matter.

“Yes, we are, Jihyo”

She didn’t meet Mina’s eye, not really giving that much interest to her dilemma as Jihyo just went on to flipping her magazine.

The disinterest didn’t stop Mina from exclaiming the obvious truth as she continues on,"Everyone loves me. They adore me. She should adore me!"

Eyes now meeting Mina’s own, one eyebrow arched up, "Why bother? You don't even like her."

"But she should like me!"

"Maybe she didn't see something she liked in you…" Jihyo muses, one that Mina is certain is an impossible thing to happen.

Mina looks at Jihyo, throwing a little smirk before uttering a little too smugly, "Is she blind?! What’s not to like?"

Jihyo simply rolls her eyes, muttering dryly, “The arrogance? The narcissism? Or the fact that-”

“Yah!” Mina quickly cuts her off, glaring. “Are you going somewhere good here?”

Jihyo lets out an exasperated sigh, closes the magazine then adjusts her position from the chair, “Have you ever considered that she might have a different taste? Someone not japanese and clearly not full of herself?”

"Or maybe…" Mina props from her chair. "Maybe this is just her way of showing her interest in me."

“Why am I even trying?” Jihyo mutters to herself, almost defeatedly.

“Did you say something?”

"Why don't you just admit that you finally found someone who isn't so crazy about you?"

"Because I haven't, Jihyo! This hasn't happened before and I won't let it happen now!"

She groans then asks, "And your plan is?"

"I'll be her type no matter what." Mina says in resolute, hands clenching on the table edge.

"Why are you so worked up about this anyway? I mean you've got the whole school fawning over you, what difference does it make if one person isn't so much into you?"

“It’s nothing like that, Jihyo.” Mina answers, waving a hand. Although the answer did not do anything as Jihyo, a skeptic being that she is, raises a brow in response triggering Mina to continue,

"It's just that… it's not possible, you know."

Jihyo exhales, seeing as it is pointless to argue with Mina who’s eager to be a specific person’s eye candy. She stands up from the chair, fixing the folds on her skirt, and warns "Just don't do something you'll regret sooner or later."

"I won't."

The laugh Jihyo lets out is a little condescending but Mina doesn’t bother to say anything as her friend takes her leave.

There is a more pressing matter that concerns her, the same pressing matter that keeps her awake at night, livid and bothered; pressing matter that definitely hits her ego way harder than any belittling or derogatory remarks her friend managed to make for the last 10 years they’ve known each other.

Mina stands up from her seat, takes her steps towards the window and gazes out to see the sun sets from the horizon.

The sunset has always been a beauty to watch. It's always astonishing to see the sun's rays slowly diminishing from the horizon. One will always be in awe at the wonder unveiling before them.

And Mina is sure that this is exactly also what everyone feels about her: the tingling feeling around their stomach, the weakening of their knees, smile spreading across their lips, fluttering of their eyes, and that crazy throbbing of their hearts. They can't help but stare at the wonder in front of them and be into that feeling.

Jihyo would probably roll her eyes on this, Mina is certain about it but this is simply the law of nature. When one is faced with the most perfect form of untainted beauty, one is bound to be in complete and utter awe. This is the expected scene yet one decided to defy that law…

‘Why am I not your type?!’

Mina sighs as she watches from the window that law defying being running around the track with much enthusiasm, concentration and dedication in it.

'If you'd only put as much devotion on me then I wouldn't be like this you know…’

Mina has never been this so damningly, annoyingly , determined in getting someone’s attention. She is determined alright but mostly about school recognition, and not about gaining someone’s interest. The latter has always been something Mina obtained without much effort, barely any determination, and rarely with much desire. Yet at this moment, what Mina desires the most is to be her type.

Jihyo did wonder why Mina is so motivated in doing so when she has the entire school all over her.

And that is exactly why. The entirety should be fawning over her.

Because for the past twenty years of her life, she has never met anyone who wouldn’t want her, wouldn’t like her or wouldn’t be interested in her. It has never happened. Moreover, it never even crossed her mind that it could actually happen.

But now that it did, Mina is suddenly thrown inside this world she has never been in before; a world Mina never thought existed yet she’s now in there, standing all alone in unfamiliar territory lacking that usual attraction and adoration she normally gets, and Mina simply hates it.

‘I will be your type no matter what!’

Mina lets out a long groan, knowing full well how she is suddenly turning into some kind of insensible human being, desperately wanting to be needed and dreadfully needing to be wanted.

Then she wonders, ‘ When did this obsession start?’

---x----

Mina walks toward the door as soon as she hears a knock.

To say that she wasn’t expecting a visitor is an understatement. She is fully aware of someone coming in today. She did spend half of her day organizing the dorm to make it seamless for the new comer.

First Impressions, Mina is certain, do always last.

The door swings open, and the smile on Mina’s face widens in an instant, well-rehearsed if Jihyo is there to point out.

“Hello” The tone of her voice is sweet, with an intent to allure a seemingly unaware being.

The newcomer let out a smile, and Mina thinks, the smile is quite endearing(a thought she hadn’t had for anyone)

"Do you want me to help you with those?" Mina asks, gesturing over the two luggages at the newcomer’s hands.

The other shakes her head, smiling as she jokes, "Nah. I had carried these from the ground floor up to the third floor; a few more steps wouldn't hurt me."

Mina laughs at the unexpected humor, dry as it may, and lets the taller girl into the room.

The room isn't big nor is it too small, it is your average sized room enough for two people to occupy. There is one double deck bed on the farthest right, two desks and chairs on the other side, two closets near the door, and enough space for more other things.

“I have arranged the bed for you. You don’t mind sleeping on top, do you?”

The other girl looks at her then on the bed where Mina’s hand lays, “Top doesn’t sound bad.”

The flash of smile the other girl throws puts Mina’s heart to an unfamiliar beat. Mina isn’t sure if the suggestive joke is at fault or that huge smile that slowly starts to become attractive for her is.

Because for one, Mina usually isn’t one to get so easily charmed.

But Mina doesn’t get a chance to find which is as her train of thoughts breaks at the sound of her new roommate’s voice

"Thank you… for the trouble you put up in fixing the bed."

Mina stares at the other girl and wonders why she hasn’t noticed it in the beginning; noticed the shade of bluish green that stands out from the normalcy that she has been used too, or that perfect set of teeth, or that pearly white skin, Mina is certain is as smooth as it looks.

Mina shakes her head slightly, laughing internally how she is beginning to gawk at the newcomer when it should have been the other way around.

“No it’s okay. It’s the least I can do for my new roommate.” Mina replies, adding “We haven't formally introduced ourselves yet, I'm Mina Myoui."

“Jeongyeon Yoo.” the other says as she lends a hand out.

Mina takes it and shakes, all the while confirming that little thought she had a while ago: her skin really is as smooth as it looks.

“So..” Mina starts, pulling her hand away, “So why did you move to our school?

Jeongyeon points to herself, mouthing a soft “Me?” before continuing " I was scouted for the track and field team. I guess that's all there is to it."

“Oh!” is all Mina could react as the news that flowed throughout the campus enters her mind.

“So it’s you..” she adds without a thought.

“What do you mean it’s me?”

" Nothing. It's nothing." Mina waves, now aware of what she had muttered unconsciously out in the open.

Suddenly the welcoming atmosphere changes into an awkward silence.

Jeongyeon shrugs the unwelcomed awkwardness and begins arranging her belongings.

Mina isn’t one to stare, or to watch someone doing practically unentertaining to even capture her attention. But Mina did, and intently at that, wondering if the rumors are true.

“Hey…” Mina calls out softly, hesitating for a second whether it was a good idea to ask but calms another second later when she sees Jeongyeon with a smile, calming her in a way no one has before. “I don’t mean to pry and I have nothing against it really, but is it true?”

“You got to help out here.” Jeongyeon laughs as she jokes, barely understanding Mina’s question.

“Your uality.”

“Oh.”

Mina suddenly regrets asking. To be honest, the rumor doesn’t bother her, not even for a little bit. What does bother her right about now, is the look Jeongyeon is giving, and it doesn’t sit well with her.

So Mina turns her head away, “I’m sorry if that sounded intruding. I didn’t mean to. It’s something personal and I’m sorry if I overstep any boundary.”

“Does it bother you?”

“No.” Mina looks into her eyes and continues, “Not at all. But..”

“But?”

“I don’t swing that way.”

Jeongyeon chuckles, and Mina finds herself dumbfounded at her reaction “Okay.”

“Okay?”

“Well, even if you do swing that way as you put it, you’re not my type.”

“Excuse me?” Mina had to ask again.

The revelation isn’t something Mina expected hearing, heck it isn’t even something Mina expected to ever happen. It hasn’t happened, and hearing someone say it for the first time puts Mina in a very unfamiliar territory.

“I do hope you don’t get this the wrong way..” Jeongyeon says, her smile cracking to a worried expression.

And Mina thinks it isn’t the right time to notice this, but that concern painting Jeongyeon’s face awfully looks damn adorable.

“You’re beautiful, and you probably know it, and I’m sure it also extends within, but it’s just that you’re not my type.”

Mina is pretty sure Jeongyeon said it only once, but that damn revelation keeps replaying in her ears more than she would like to hear it. The words echoing endlessly, reverberating within, and shattering her once sturdy ego.

And though the unforeseen truth took her by surprise(countless emotions Mina had never felt before), Mina still has to keep herself from getting affected(even when she already is), and responds with a smile,

“That’s good to hear then.”

Jeongyeon’s words still play in her mind, like a broken record Mina can’t seem to pause or stop. And Mina is now distracted, annoyed, and with a new goal in mind.

---x----

WHY AM I NOT YOUR TYPE?!

"YOU DUMB GIRL!!"

Her own little outburst caught Mina by surprise. It wasn’t meant to be said aloud for anyone to hear, it was only meant for her, within her where she could ridicule and let her frustration out without the knowledge of the person it was meant to be directed at.

But it was now out in the open, and a second later Mina finds herself eye to eye with that same being that has been clouding her thoughts ever since she met her.

Mina's body stiffens and without much thought really , glides herself down the window, hiding behind the wall, away from the piercing brown eyes that sent shivers down her spine.

Embarrassing.

That’s the word. That’s how it exactly looks as she crawls her way towards her seat to grab her belongings. If Jihyo is still here, she’d be rolling herself on the ground laughing her off. But she isn’t yet Mina is laughing, laughing at the humiliating position she has set herself in; a position she never had once imagined herself to be in.

Mina doesn’t leave yet, not just yet, and waits by her seat and lets another ten minutes pass- enough time to ensure that the dumb girl Mina is pertaining to is no longer behind the window to spot her.

And ten minutes later, Mina is out the door and down the stairs hoping to the possibility that she would be able to race her roommate who also happens to be their school track and field star first at the dormitory.

But Mina isn’t really God’s favorite human right now. And her hope quickly fades away as soon as she sees that gentle smile(which she had come to find quite attractive) welcoming her by the school main door.

“Hey,” The girl greets stopping by the top flight stairs out the door.

Mina sets aside the growing embarrassment, and smiles endearingly back, “Hi. You’re still here?”

That was stupid to ask. No really, it was specially when their eyes did meet for a good two seconds earlier after her outburst. Mina knows full well that Jeongyeon is still here and why, and she is also aware that Jeongyeon does too..

But Mina has to feign innocence even when it’s bordering on stupidity already(another thing Mina never expected to be.) Now that she realizes it, everything she never expected herself to be or to be in, Jeongyeon seems to be the cause of it.

Jeongyeon, as kind as ever, chooses to reply without any hint of mockery behind her tone, “We had training earlier. I just finished it. Are you going home?”

Mina can’t seem to find her voice as she only nods in response. She was expecting Jeongyeon to grill her about the events that transpired earlier, events that showcased something out of her character. But Jeongyeon didn’t, and maybe Mina is so used to how Jihyo responds to her antics that she thought she’d be getting the same response.

That difference has Mina wondering other things she expects that Jeongyeon would prove otherwise. And this intrigues her(something that hasn’t happened before)

The distance between the dormitory and school isn’t far, but somehow the walk back feels like the longest Mina had ever travelled. The trip isn’t fun but is quiet and not the peaceful kind anyone wants, but the kind that sends a person on edge, scrambling around places in their own mind for words to utter out and break the awkwardness that has grown for sometime now.

And it has grown quite thick, enough for Mina to laugh at being a nervous wreck and uncharacteristically meek.

How do one go about a conversation with someone who obviously caught you cussing from the top of your lungs and that someone possibly thinks it might be them? You don’t. You don’t get to talk like it doesn’t bother you, especially when you’re trying to be that someone’s type, to be the apple of her tasteless eyes.

“You’re awfully quiet” Jeongyeon's sudden musing pulls Mina back to reality who only looks at her with half dazed expression, “I mean you’re livelier when alone huh?”

The comment confuses Mina even more, tilting her head slightly as she keeps her questioning gaze at Jeongyeon

“You dumb girl!” Jeongyeon mimics with a small smile, drawing a blush out of Mina’s cheeks.

Mina panics, feeling the heat spreading quickly on her face and sorts out the best excuse to voice out, “It’s Sana! The dumb girl is Sana. She forgot to give back my notes.”

“I wasn’t-” Jeongyeon chuckles.

The sound, despite putting Mina into a more flustered state, feels incredibly nice to hear, like graciously dancing around her ears and capturing her senses as it sways around.

“I wasn’t really asking who.” Jeongyeon manages to finish.

“I just thought you might have misunderstood it since you kind of saw me and I was looking at you.”

Jeongyeon flashes another smile, before coolly tucking her hands inside her pants’ pockets. Mina feels another pull in her heart strings at the upward curve on Jeongyeon lips that seems to have grown on her.

"Well I do have my dumb moments. But I do think that Sana’s clumsiness is quite adorable, in fact captivating."

Mina couldn’t help the snort that came out after hearing Jeongyeon’s admission. It’s hard not to especially when Mina finds the trait hardly alluring

“What?”

“Not to sound offensive, but really? Clumsy girls?”

“What’s not to like?”

Mina tries really hard not to answer the question with her own long list of why it isn’t idyllic to like one, and just lets Jeongyeon continue answering her own question.

“It makes you want to protect them, you know take care of them.”

Like Mina would know, really Jeongyeon, Mina has no intention of liking one, nor imagine liking one. So knowing what it feels is far from something Mina would understand.

Mina suppresses the snicker bubbling in and just let out a pretentious, "Is that so?"

"Yeah. It's quite endearing, don't you think?"

"Oh God no.” Mina didn’t really want to sound so dramatic, but the reaction she let out can’t be helped.

"Well that's because you're a woman of grace and elegance, gawky in the least."

"I can be clumsy." Mina is quick to argue, stopping from her track just to face Jeongyeon with a challenging gaze. Jeongyeon stops, looks at Mina and sneers at the comment.

“Like that could happen” the tone Jeongyeon manages to let out doesn’t sit well with Mina. She isn’t a fan of sarcasm, especially when it revolves around her capability.

A brow instantly arches up, "What's that supposed to mean?"

The conversation never really meant to go this way, it was friendly earlier, something Jeongyeon thought could ease the tension. But somehow the atmosphere changed into a different tone, where Mina is now hyped up about an innocent comment while Jeongyeon is cornered into explaining.

Jeongyeon now wonders what she did to have a frowning Mina looking in her direction. “I mean, it’s like saying Chaeyoung could outgrow me, or Sana could outrace me.”

The explanation doesn’t ease the situation one bit. And now Jeongyeon is looking at a glaring Mina.

Mina had to admit, the argument made a good point, but that doesn’t mean Mina isn’t riled up by it because she is. Jeongyeon saying she likes clumsy girls and she can’t be clumsy, is like saying Mina can’t be Jeongyeon’s type.

And Mina has every intention of being her type.

Mocking her capability in doing so is another step to her ego, and Mina wouldn’t have any of that.

“You’d be surprised at what I can be, Jeongyeon.” Mina says as she starts walking again, with Jeongyeon following after.

“Is that so?” Jeongyeon says jogging next to her, tone no longer laced with sarcasm but with genuine wondering and slight intrigue as she continues, “Surprise me then.”

“Oho.” Mina gasps, a soft laughter comes after, “Is that a challenge, Ms. Yoo?”

Mina hears that sound again, feels her heart exuberate a kind of emotion it never felt before. But Mina doesn’t dwell much on it but instead chooses to glance at Jeongyeon and watch her laugh, watch as Jeongyeon’s eyes form crescents and the corners of her lips widen at the action.

Mina isn’t one to be drawn, but she finds herself being pulled by the unexplainable magnetic attraction she has on Jeongyeon.

“Would that be a problem, Ms. Myoui?”

Mina darts her eyes back on the road, replying a little too smugly, “Not at all. I can easily have anyone I want, I’ll have you know.”

Jeongyeon laughs again as she quips, “No ego boost here.”

Obviously. Jeongyeon wouldn’t. Hasn’t. In fact Jeongyeon has been deflating her ego unconsciously ever since she met her, and Mina tries her hardest not to let this out in the open.

Mina knows Jeongyeon doe
