Storm of Emotions
By My SideRain was always pleasant to Yewon, both the sound and sight of it.
It had started to lightly rain outside when she had left for school that morning. Yuju had been upset as expected but had remained under her new weighted blanket, falling back asleep after Yewon had made sure to give her forehead and cheeks several good bye kisses. Seeing Yuju drift back asleep before she had left had given a spark of hope to Yewon's chest.
But that feeling started to disappear as the rain outside started to get worse.
Yewon could barely concentrate on the lecture, only able to hear the loud sound of the rain outside pouring down against the roof of the building. The nervous feeling in her body continued to grow stronger, Yewon's eyes shifting from her paper to the window. It would be okay, right? Yuju had her blanket and the school day would be over soon. Just a few more hours. She could make it,
Boom.
The sound of thunder echoed in the lecture hall. The professor and most of the students didn't seem too bothered by it but Yewon's shoulders had tensed up. Something was wrong. That was the main thought and feeling coursing through her body.
Something was wrong. She needed to get home.
Shoving her papers and books into her backpack, Yewon grabbed her umbrella by her feet and made a beeline towards the door, pushing her way outside into the heavily pouring rain.
Boom. Another thunderclap sounded out, a flash of lighting able to be seen in the distance. Now she could definitely sense that something was wrong.
Yewon was about to start running home when the familiar sight of someone stepping out of the other nearby lecture hall entered her vision.
"Yewon?" Sojung called out once she had noticed Yewon after she had exited the room, worry showing clearly in her eyes.
"Sojung. We need to get to Yuju." Yewon blurted out, her hand clenching tightly around the handle of her umbrella. Sojung didn't speak, only nodded firmly before following behind Yewon in the direction to her apartment.
Both girls were basically running at full speed at this point, not caring that they were getting slightly wet in the process. Yewon's mind raced, thoughts of the smiling and giggling half puppy entering her mind. Sojung reached over and grabbed Yewon's free hand as the two of them ran, squeezing it gently. Yewon calmed down slightly with the touch. At least she wasn't alone in how she was feeling.
Once the pair had reached the door, Yewon fumbled with her keys, her hands shaking as another loud thunderclap sounded out from the sky. Another sound caused the younger girl's hand to tremble, both Sojung and Yewon's eyes filling with fear as they recognized just exactly what the muffled sound was.
It sounded exactly like Yuju's barks, the sound clearly coming from inside Yewon's apartment somewhere.
Yewon finally managed to unlock the door with her shaking hands, practically tripping over her own feet as Sojung closed the door behind them.
"Yuju! Yuju!" Yewon called out desperately, her eyes scanning around the room. She wasn't in the living room, the room just as empty and quiet as it had been when she had left that morning.
"Yuju?!" Sojung's unusually panicked voice was next to call out the half puppy's name, the older girl opening the bathroom door to search inside. Yewon darted into her bedroom and gasped, noticing how Yuju's weighted blanket was on the floor instead of on the bed. Yuju was still no where to be seen, causing the pair to frantically search everywhere they possibly could in the apartment. The door had been locked so Yuju had to be hiding somewhere inside.
Though, Yewon hadn't been expecting to find Yuju in this state again.
Kneeling down next to the bed, Yewon leaned down to look underneath it. A gasp escaped again, her eyes widening.
There was Yuju. But she wasn't in her human form anymore, scared and soft brown eyes staring up at Yewon's own wide ones as the black lab puppy let out a distressed whine.
"Yuju." Yewon whispered, reaching out to try and pull Yuju's puppy form out from under the bed. Yuju immediately moved towards Yewon's outstretched hand with a scared cry, allowing Yewon to grab her and pull her out.
"Sojung!" Yewon called out as she cradled the baby dog in her arms. "Sojung, I found her!"
Sojung took no time in running back into the bedroom, holding several familiar pieces of clothing in her arms. It was Yuju's new blue hoodie, her collar and favorite pair of modified black shorts. Sojung's eyes widened the second she spotted the puppy in Yewon's arms, noticing the familiar brown eyes peering over at her.
"....Yuju?" Was all Sojung could say at the moment, kneeling down next to Yewon.
"It's Yuju." Yewon breathed out in an attempt to slow down her racing heartbeat. "I knew something was wrong."
"Is this what she looked like when you rescued her?" Sojung managed to ask, placing the clothes down on the floor.
"Yeah." Yewon nodded, running a hand against Yuju's head and frowning at the sensation of Yuju's puppy body shaking. Things were starting to become a bit clearer even so. Yuju was scared. Maybe this had something to do with why she was in her puppy form when she had first found her. But there was no way to confirm it with Yuju in this state again.
"How do we bring her back?" Sojung asked.
"I don't know." Yewon replied, holding the baby dog even closer. Sure, she had loved having a puppy before Yuju had shifted back but now, seeing Yuju's puppy form was only bringing her sadness. She wanted Yuju back. The real Yuju. But how were they going to do that?
"Yuju? Can you understand us?" Yewon finally asked, Sojung focused on Yuju's puppy form with a serious expression.
Yuju barked in response before whining loudly. Another thunderclap sounded outside and Yuju immediately started to shake even more, whimpering and crying out as if she had broken her paw.
"You got scared, right? You got scared by the storm while I was gone. Is that why you're in this form again?" Yewon frantically asked, holding Yuju close again as Sojung rubbed the baby dog's body gently with her hand.
Yuju let out another distressed bark as if she was agreeing with what Yewon was saying.
"But you've been scared before." Sojung chimed in, ruffling the soft black fur of Yuju's puppy form as best as she could. "You weren't just scared, were you? You were terrified. Especially without Yewon here. Am I right?"
Yuju whined weakly at that, confirming both Yewon and Sojung's assumptions.
"We're here now." Sojung lowered her voice, trying to provide comfort. "We're here, Yuju. I know you're scared but we're right here. We came back for you."
"She's right." Yewon nodded. "The second the storm started getting bad, we dropped everything and ran here. We ran here because we knew something was wrong."
Yuju's puppy form was still shaking, her face buried in Yewon's chest.
"I don't know how to help you shift back. You know that better than we do." Yewon took a breath, steading her voice. "But please....come back to us, Yuju. You don't have to be scared anymore"
"I'm not going anywhere until you're back and feeling better, okay?" Sojung said. "I know you don't trust me fully yet but I care about you."
"My Yuju....." Yewon whispered, rocking the baby dog gently in her arms as Yuju quietly whimpered again. "My poor Yuju....I'm here. I'm right here."
"Let's get her blanket around her again. That could maybe help." Sojung suggested. Yewon nodded and Sojung was quick to grab the discarded weighted blanket off of the floor where it had fallen next to the bed. Yewon moved Yuju away from her chest so Sojung could wrap her in the blanket, the black lab puppy crying out in fear the entire time. Though, once she was properly covered in the weighted blanket and against Yewon's chest again, Yuju quieted down, the puppy whining softly one last time. Yewon continued to rock Yuju's puppy form back and forth, whispering comforting words and phrases with Sojung joining in every so often. And after a while, it finally happened.
A flash of light suddenly appeared, both Yewon and Sojung closing their eyes in a wince from the brightness of the light. Once the two had opened their eyes again, Yuju was back, her body still covered by the weighted blanket. Her
