CHAPTER 2

Matching Cupid

“Remind me again why we’re standing in front of a university?” Eunha remarked, her arms crossed on her chest.

The younger girl beside her slightly turned her head towards the bobbed cut, taking a glimpse of her for a mere second. The girl couldn’t help but roll her eyes at Eunha who has asked the same question for the nth time.

“Because we’re going to look after Cupid?” Yewon answered for the nth time — hoping that the older girl would stop pestering her about an obvious matter.

“Obviously.” Eunha scoffed. “But I mean, why do we have to enter the university as students? We all know we won’t even need or use the information we learn in our classes when doing our job?”

Yewon was about to rebut and tell Eunha how wrong she is but all she could do was let out a sigh. She was defeated. The younger girl couldn’t help but agree on the last statement of the latter. All she knew is that the matchmakers have no choice but to enroll in this university where the supposedly match of Cupid is studying.

The younger girl felt the intense stare of the older girl – waiting for her answer to the question posted not too long ago.

Eunha obviously won’t take silence as an answer.

“All I know is...” Yewon trailed off, staring at the gigantic clock tower that is hanged on the middle of the main building. “We really can’t do anything about it. Kyung was the one who commanded us to attend school like normal human beings.”

“But we’re not humans?” Psyche had her right eyebrow perked up, not backing away from the argument she started. Yewon on the other hand snapped her neck towards the older girl, now staring at the latter with a hint of annoyance.

It would be a lie to say that Yewon doesn’t hate the fact that her assigned partner is the infamous Psyche. Everyone knows how annoying this girl could get specially when bored and how this is the very first time they have worked with someone for a mission.

After all, Nobody works with someone just for a mere matchmaking task.

This case was just an exemption.

“Do you think the people walking past us or just anyone… like anyone alive on earth knows we’re not humans?”

“No. But we still have the right to refuse to study? Plus the fact that we can just make clones to attend the–“

Eunha’s words were interrupted by a loud groan from Yewon. The younger girl is in the verge of sending the girl back to the other realm and report her misbehavior to her father. It wasn’t even a week ever since they travelled to the mortal world and everyday Eunha is making unnecessary problems.

Yewon’s hands turned into ball of fists, nails piercing on her skin but not to tight to make it bleed. The girl fastened her pace, ignoring the bobbed haired girl.

She stopped her tracks, feeling the cool gush of wind brush on her milky skin, she closed her eyes and collected her thought. Thinking that no matter how annoying her partner could get, she would handle the girl and would not snap at her.

“Don’t let her get in your nerves, Yewon.” The girl muttered to herself before flashing a forced smile. Hoping it could take away the frustration she is feeling towards the childish partner she’s with.

It wasn’t long until the school bell ruined the peacefulness of the school hallways. The students who were calmly walking and chatting to each other were now rushing towards their respective classes. Slowly making every inch of the campus go dead empty.

Seeing this scenario wasn’t new to the young girl. She had already seen people run and even sometimes cuss on their way to work or school for the past centuries.

A loud thud echoed the empty hallway making Yewon turn to the origin of the sound.

There she saw Eunha sitting on the ground, rubbing her bottom and hissing. In front of the girl was a brunette  who seemed like in a hurry. With the way she briskly picked up the books scattered on the floor and how she didn’t bother sparing Eunha a glance as she repeatedly apologized before storming off.

Yewon watched the mortal run up the staircase until she was no longer in sight of the matchmaker. A small smile forming on her lips as she saw the familiar figure who appears to be doing fine.

Her smile soon faded when she heard Eunha’s irritated voice. Quickly turning her head, the bob cut girl is now on her feet but pain is still visible on her face, her hand still rubbing her bottom.

“It’s so nice of you to just stand there.” Sarcasm was prominent on Eunha’s voice making Yewon slowly shake her head.

“With the tone of yours, looks like you’re utterly fine Eunha.”

Yewon felt Eunha giving her the daggers but remained unfazed. The only thing that the younger girl hopes is that this mission to go well with no problems.

And perhaps her childish partner would have some character development at the end of this?

■■■■■

All eyes darted towards Yewon as she opened the sliding door. The girl doesn’t know why her shoulder felt a sudden weigh upon seeing how she caught the attention of all the people in the room.

She stood in front of the door, not knowing what she should do. If she should take a seat anywhere or would they tell her to specifically sit somewhere.

“You’re a few minutes late, Yewon.” Kyung firmly stated, sending shivers to the newly arrived girl. “But that’s fine. You did receive the message on short notice.” The man leaned her back on the black office chair and clasped his hands on his crossed legs.

Confused by the statement of her father, she discretely raised her wristwatch to see what time it was. She was confused on why the man told her that she was late when she was perfectly on time.

If there were no other important people in the room, she would have casually raised her eyebrows on her father and ask him what he’s talking about. But that was not the case at this very moment.

She would surely get in trouble if she does that now.

“Have a seat beside your partner.” Yewon lifted her head. She followed the direction where the man was pointing her hand at and it wasn’t anymore a surprise for her when her eyes caught her said to be partner.

Eunha.

As their eyes met their gazes, the older girl flashed her a smile. Assuring her that she would not be in trouble. She was supposed to smile back at the latter but instead, she brushed her off and walked towards the vacant seat.

“You must really be scared that you even forgot to smile at me.” Eunha remarked the moment Yewon took her seat.

“Or, I just didn’t want to greet you back.”

The younger girl didn’t mean to act so arrogant towards the girl. She isn’t this type of person. It didn’t help that she was pissed at her father before coming here.

Realizing how she’s acting towards an innocent, a mere “Sorry.” Escaped . The girl beside her nodded and smiled again upon hearing the apology.

“Apology accepted.”

The meeting began not long after. Kyung discussed what their next big task would be and that Yewon and Eunha will be assign to do the mission in matchmaking Cupid to her matched mortal.

Psyche undeniably had her forehead creased at the whole topic about the mission. Not understanding the reason why there should be two matchmakers to take care of this one. Why she would be assigned to such thing when Yewon could handle it on her own — considering the fact that the younger is more expert than her in terms of playing cupid.

Once Kyung had said to raise their hand if there’s any question running on their mind, Eunha didn’t have any second thought to raise hers. Seeing her hand, the man slightly tilted his head  before gesturing her to go on.

“Why am I exactly needed here? Yewon can obviously handle this on her own. What’s need on having two matchmakers on one frame?”

The moment Eunha dropped her thoughts, silenced filled the room. This was one of the moments where she wish that she can turn invisible or sink. Who wouldn’t think of that when your boss is extremely scanning and judging you?

“Well for starters,” Kyung brushed her hand through her hair. “Yewon doesn’t specialize in spellcasting like you are. Meaning if there’s something that goes wrong, her mission would fail without any doubt.”

“What do you mean by utterly fail?” Eunha’s eyebrow raised out of confusion.

“As you all know, the tests regarding that girl has finished and the results are all saying that she’s Cupid but when she woke up… she doesn’t remember who we are, where she is, and who she is.”

Eunha was confused and so was Yewon.

“You mean she lost her memories?” It was Yewon who asked the question that Eunha was about to ask.

Hearing his daughter, Kyung took a deep breath and made the silence sip in. Only the sound of the machineries can be heard --- echoing throughout the vast meeting room.

The girls observed the expression that the head was giving to them. It was a mix of amusement and disbelief. It was as if he expected this kind of reaction.

Yewon fidgeted her fingers under the table, hoping that she must have heard wrong.

Eunha felt a big lump in form.

Not only the two were the ones expecting the answer of the head. The board members also had their eyes on the man who sat at the middle rear of the long rectangular table.

All of them were anticipating the answer and they were hoping that there was a mistake.

But no.

There was no mistake.

The next word that Kyung uttered caused commotion --- murmurs that were loud enough to be considered as chatters filled the room as Kyung stated “Yes.”

The matchmakers were the only ones who sat still. Frozen in place. They were lost for words. Seconds passed by until the chatters abruptly stopped when the youngest, Yewon, laughed. Hysterically laughed.

The girl was laughing like a mad man and her eyes were sparkling brightly as the tears started to form on them. Everyone had their eyes on the girl. Speechless and more confused than Kyung’s news for it was a first for them to see the girl at this kind of state.

Yewon’s laughter slowly died down. She was now trying to catch her breath and compose herself before exasperatedly uttering. “So, you mean she might not even be Cupid?”  She clicked her tongue. “What if the girl you claim to be Cupid isn’t really her? What if she’s like Sojung? A reincarnation of the grim reaper.”

The room was now oddly quiet. Even Kyung was left speechless. They -- He didn’t think that far. No one thought of that possibility.

The youngest was about to say something more until she felt a hand squeezing hers. Turning her head to face the owner of the hand, she saw Eunha giving her an assuring expression as she mouth “Stop.” which unbeknownst made Yewon stop pressing further. She allowed Eunha to take over before she says something she would regret.

“You haven’t thought of that haven’t you?” Eunha asked. Not letting anyone to answer as she throws another question. “So what if she’s really not Cupid? What if she’s just a reincarnation?… What happens then?”

Kyung bit his lower lip, his eyes traveling every corner of the room.

“Then we have no problem anymore. Your task would be easier to accomplish.” The man lightly clapped. “But for now, let’s assume she’s Cupid since we have no proof of anything regarding your theory.”

■■■■■

After the two matchmaker went to the admission office to receive their class schedule, they helped theirselves and toured the campus and doing that is definitely a bad idea.

Eunha felt her feet feeling sore due to all the walking their did. She started wishing that this hell of being a mortal to blend in would just stop. The girl definitely misses her powers and spells she casts whenever she needs to travel.

“Can we at least eat, Yewon?” The bobbed cut girl whined at the girl walking ahead of her who kept mum.

The girl groaned as she rolled her eyes upon the treatment that her partner is giving her. It was as if she didn’t even exist. It’s been half an hour ever since they were taking their time to tour the campus and during that span of time, Yewon has not spoken a single word towards the older girl.

Eunha was definitely not having this kind of treatment so she decided to say some daring things.

“If you don’t speak to me Kim Yewon… I swear I’ll file a report to the boss for not cooperating.”

Yewon’s footsteps came to a halt after Eunha shouted the words she thought that would make the younger girl to treat her more kindly.

A cocky smile formed on Eunha’s face but soon turned into a frown.

The young matchmaker’s shoulders bounced as she loudly scoffed at the older and that is not a good sign. Eunha felt suddenly cold and nervous --- as if she dug her own grave.

“Oh really?” Yewon turned her body, now facing the frozen girl. “You’ll do that?”

Eunha could only hear the light footsteps coming near her despite of the busy campus. One step. Two steps. Three steps.

“Do it. I’ll tell father how you complain every second of every day because of how lazy you are and how you think this is stupid.” The younger girl stated with a huge smirk on her face.

Hearing the threat, the latter started having hiccups. Something that always happens when she’s either scared or nervous.

The two matchmakers had a staring battle for a few seconds before one of them broke it and surrendered. “I’m sorry.” The bobbed haired girl softly uttered, not daring to look at the eyes of the confident girl.

Yewon tilted her head, amused at how the latter was left in utter defeat. The girl’s serious stare softened and then chuckled before turning around.

“Apology accepted.” The younger said before letting her feet lead the way. “Now, let’s find where Sowon is at.”

Eunha was left stunned. Embarrassed at how she admitted defeat in a battle she started.

■■■■■

The matchmakers were standing in front of the school library where Yewon presumes Sowon to be at.

Eunha tapped her feet on the ground out of boredom. She stared at the bright white ceiling of the hallway before scratching her head in frustration.

“Are you even sure she’s here?” The older girl’s question came more as a statement.

“Positive.” Yewon nonchalantly answered the older girl. Her eyes travelled to her watch before diverting it back to the entrance door.

The latter couldn’t help but scoff. For all she knows, there is no proof that the one they’re searching for is indeed here since the campus’ scale is enormous. Thinking that this is probably not the only library located in the university, the older girl pushed herself from the wall she’s leaning onto.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Yewon asked the girl who is walking towards the door.

“Going somewhere where we should have gone for the pas minutes?” The latter sarcastically said.

“You can’t just--” Yewon’s words were interrupted by the girl who was in front of the library door. “Geez, I’m only going to peek. Not ruin the peaceful vibe of the place.”

The younger girl didn’t have any more energy left in her body for the fact that the girl she’s with drains every single drop of energy left in her body. She swears, Eunha just has this power to drain her soul. That’s why instead of trying to stop her, she she kept mum and let the older girl do what he wants.

What Eunha said about only peeking the library wasn’t a lie. She only stood in the middle of the opened door, scanning the area for the presence of Sowon and the youngest only watched her behind as she remained leaning on the wall and her arms crossed in front of her chest.

It didn’t take a while until the older girl closed the door and returned to the younger girl.

“So?” Yewon asked as he heaved a sigh and massage her temple.

Eunha placed both her hands inside her pockets and shrugged before walking away from the younger who felt a boiling sensation inside her as she witnessed how the older just walked away before properly answering her question.

Yewon felt that Eunha is this close --- just a tiny lit bit more before she murders her partner.

“Psyche, why did you walk away before answering me?”

“I answered you.”

“Yeah, with a shrug.”

The bobbed haired girl sighed and turned to face the younger girl. “Sowon is there but I don’t think she should be bothered.”

Yewon raised an eyebrow at the vague statement which of course Eunha picked up immediately and answered. “She seemed to be talking with someone.” The girl stopped, unsure of what to say next but the younger gestured her to go on.

“She’s with Eunbi.”
