Fate

Fate

Kim Taehyung never believed in fate. He always cursed, ‘Fate be damned.’ into the air every time he was frustrated. He was indeed upset about how things were going for him in his life. He was just fired from his job at a company, he recently broke up with his boyfriend and even lost a friend.

Fate was unfair, he concluded.

He loosened his black tie as he felt like he was suffocating with the failures he has just experienced within the past year. It , it really does. He shifted his brown body bag uncomfortably and started walking aimlessly around downtown.

He was jobless yet again. Taehyung almost had a headache just thinking of looking over job opportunities once more. It was outrageous to find another job. His friends always looked at him with pity. He doesn’t want that but he was grateful when his friend, Kim Seokjin, tried to help him cheer up and find a job for him again.

He ruffled his raven hair. Taehyung doesn’t care about appearances now that he was out of the game. His tired eyes looked around as he tried to find something that he could. He never expected it but he was free the whole day today. He couldn’t even bother his other friend, Jeon Jungkook, who was kind of flirting with Jin-much to Taehyung’s disgust, since he was at work as well.

Taehyung shook his head. He shouldn’t meddle with the two’s lovelife. Maybe they were actually good together. No one would ever know. He also felt like if he ever talked about it, he’d rub his curse on them and he preferred it to suffer alone.

He stopped in his tracks when something caught his eye. It was a homey looking coffee shop across the street. He didn’t know why but something about the place drew him in. He noticed that he stopped by the pedestrian lane. He arched a brow. What a coincidence.

He shrugged it off and waited until the lights indicated that people were safe to cross the busy streets of Seoul. Taehyung walked as he focused his eyes on the cafe. Once he crossed the street, he slowly approached the cafe door and he let out a sigh of relief when he saw the sign showing ‘OPEN’.

“Well, it’s not like anything’s closed at this hour,” Taehyung muttered as he looked down at his watch that indicated the time, 10AM.

He pushed the door open and his nose was already hit with the strong and delicious aroma and coffee. He could feel his tensed body relaxed as he entered the establishment. He looked around and found it quite small but cozy. It only had a few tables and chairs to accompany a small crowd. It had wooden-like walls that gave a cabin-like feel.

Taehyung saw a few people already on some tables. They had a laptop or tablet on the table with a cup of coffee and a pastry behind it. He could understand that this was quite a peaceful environment to work.

“Good morning!” The cheery greeting made Taehyung snap out of his thoughts and his eyes landed on a young man with brilliant silver hair behind the counter. He noticed the way his eyes crinkled as he gave the newly arrived man a huge smile.

Taehyung couldn’t help but give a small yet tired smile back. He noticed that the counter was not busy and he felt his feet move towards the counter and approached the smiling cashier.

“Hi there! What would you have today?” The man asked. Taehyung’s eyes flickered to the name tag of the employee.

“Jimin,” he uttered softly and Taehyung immediately clasped his hand on his mouth in embarrassment.

The employee, Jimin, tilted his head but kept the smile, “Yep, that’s me! Nice to meet you. Is it your first time here?”

Taehyung slowly nodded in response and Jimin couldn’t help but find the man rather cute or may he dare say, attractive.

“Could you recommend something?” Taehyung asked awkwardly.

“Hm,” Jimin mused as he looked up at the menu that was written on the blackboard, “Well, since it’s hot out there, why not have an iced cafe latte?”

“I’ll have that then.”

Jimin hid the way his body shivered at the deep timbre of the customer’s voice. ‘Calm down,’ he chanted in his head.

“Alrighty, then. May I have your name?” Jimin asked as he held up a paper cup and had a pen in hand.

“Taehyung.”

“Taehyung,” Jimin repeated and stuck out his tongue in concentration as he wrote the man’s name down.

Taehyung couldn’t help but liked the way his name rolled down the employee’s tongue. He inwardly groaned. He should really calm himself down. He wasn’t sure if his heart could take it.

“Well, Taehyung, please wait until I call your name. You may sit down and get cozy here,” Jimin said with a smile.

The other nodded, “Thank you.” Taehyung  walked over to a vacant table near the window. He put his bag on top of the chair and plopped down on the chair right across from it. He really felt tired and maybe coffee would do him good.

After a few minutes, he was called out by Jimin. He has got to admit that the silver haired boy had such an angelic and friendly voice that seemed to draw him in. Taehyung slowly stood up and walked over the counter with Jimin waiting.

Jimin pushed a tray that had the iced cafe latte and a plate of a slice of new york cheesecake. Taehyung couldn’t help but raise a brow confusedly.

“I didn’t order this,” he pointed at the pastry.

Jimin flashed an almost sheepish smile and a wink, “It’s on the house.”

Taehyung felt the creeping blush forming on his slightly pale cheeks. He bowed slightly and smiled back, “T-Thank you.” He wanted to slap himself for stuttering.

Jimin chuckled, “It’s no problem. You deserved it. You looked like you had a rough day.”

“I kind of did,” Taehyung chuckled darkly. He then looked down at the pastry then at the man in front of him, “Thank you for the gesture though.”

“No problem. Enjoy your meal.”

“I will,” Taehyung said as he took the tray that was offered to him and walked back to his table. He stared at the pastry once more. He couldn’t help out but whip out his phone and took a picture of it for the memories.

He looked over the counter and caught Jimin’s eyes as the man was wiping a cup. The silver haired man smiled and gave a slight wave to which Taehyung responded with a timid wave.

Taehyung chuckled to himself. It seemed like fate loved him again.
