Hyejin had never wanted to go to this stupid summer camp. Her parents had forced her, with the reasoning that she "needed to make friends". A part of her knew that they meant well, but mostly she thought that they must secretly hate her. "Friends" were hard to obtain. Hyejin wasn't good at being "friends". As a result, she didn't have any.            The children at her school were cruel natured, and Hyejin wasn't equipped with the gumption to stick up for herself. She was shy and weird and didn't seem to like any of the same things that her peers did. She wasn't hopeful for the outcome of camp, either, then. The children there would surely be just as heartless and cold as all the rest.            On the way there, her parents tried reassuring her.   "It'll be a lot of fun," her mother insisted from the driver's seat.   Her father nodded in agreement as he twisted around to face her.   She sat in the back, with her arms folded and an expression of resolute defiance on her face. She turned away to peer out the window in silence. After a few moments, she noticed her father's withdrawal in her peripheral. Hyejin was young, but she could already tell she was made up of the same stuff as her father. Yellow-belly and all.            The camp was nothing glamorous, a few hundred kids sleeping in ill-maintained cabins and swimming in a dirty lake, but Hyejin couldn't deny that the weather was nice and the scenery was pretty. There were a number of pavilions where different activities were available and there seemed to be no shortage of things to do. Her parents dropped her off with a flurry of assurances that she would "have lots of fun" and "make tons of friends". She barely offered them a response more than a brief hug goodbye as she resigned herself to her fate.            As it turned out, she had been correct in assuming that things would be no different here than at school. Within an hour of being there, she'd been teased, once on account of her off-brand clothing and again on account of her nervous habit of twisting her hands together as she spoke. She didn't cry when this happened, she'd learned long ago that it helped little in these situations, but instead she left to find someplace to be alone. She was supposed to stay with the other ten year olds as they were brought to their cabin, but Hyejin had also learned long ago that she was gifted at hiding from others and remaining hidden for long periods of time. She brought her orange duffel bag along with her as she walked off into the surrounding woods. She didn't go far, she knew better, but she went just far enough so as not to be seen through the trees.            She walked until she found a fallen log, a little damp from a previous rain, but solid enough to hold her weight. She sat down on it, drawing her knees up to her chest and setting her chin atop them. She admired the nature around her as she tried to drown out the noise from all the children at the camp. To her surprise, she was so good at drowning things out that she didn't even notice the approach of another girl.   "Hi," the girl said, startling Hyejin out of her reverie.   Hyejin lurched and almost slipped off of her makeshift seat. She spun around and looked up at the girl.   She was probably a little older than Hyejin, but not much bigger. Short for her age, Hyejin thought. Her hair was cut to shoulder length and currently had a stra
