First Day

One Last Chance
Harin walked out her bedroom, dressed and ready for school since summer break had just ended although to her it didn't feel like it. Her parents made her go to extra lessons everyday which stressed her out, the only saving grace was that she was able to see her friend Kai every day after lessons. He even tried showing her how to dance but from the nasty bruises on her legs it was clear to see that she was too clumsy for that. In the kitchen beside her packed lunch was a note from her parents. This was normal since her father traveled a lot for work and her mother was a personal assistant in some large company. As she shoved the food in her bag she lightly skimmed over the note that said something about them all going out for dinner that night when her father got back and to dress nicely since it was going to be fancy.

"Why do I have to dress up for my parents?" Harin scoffed and walked out the door and headed to the elevator. Once inside she used the mirrors on the elevator walls to check herself out. Over the summer, thanks to Kai's dance lessons and the stress from lessons, she was able to lose her baby fat that hung around her stomach and cheeks and she felt she was finally starting to look like a woman. But, as she looked over herself she decided that she didn't like her hair being down as it looked like dried seaweed. As she walked out of the building she started putting her hair up and leaning against the wall waiting for her was Kai.

"Finally." He joked as he walked beside her while she struggled to put her hair up in a braid. "I like your hair down." He commented and Harin shot him a glare.

"At least I brush my hair." She shot back and Kai looked up at the messy ends of his hair and lazily brushed them out of his eyes.

"Did you eat breakfast?" Kai asked as he easily kept up with her pace. Harin didn't know when he grew so tall but she found herself looking up to him more and more when before they were eye level with each other.

"No, I'm trying to lose weight remember?" Harin looked at herself with her phone and Kai shoved a sandwich in her face but she swatted it away.

"You're too skinny, you look like you're going to fly away. Eat." He unwrapped the food and shoved it into and she finally stopped fighting it.

"Yummy." She muttered with her cheeks filled with food and Kai just laughed and ruffled her hair which messed up her braid. "HEY!" She screamed and Kai took off running and laughing with Harin chasing after him. They made it to the front gates of the school and Harin started choking on the food in and Kai patted her back while still laughing.

"You look like an idiot."

"So do you! Jerk." Harin swallowed her food and ended up pulling her hair out of the braid and let it hang loose around her shoulders. The two of them walked to the board to see which classes they were in and, unsurprisingly they were in the same class together. As they looked over the list to see who else was in their class they were people gasping and chatting loudly.

"What's going on?" Kai could look over the peoples heads as they crowded around the front gate but Harin couldn't see even if she was jumping. He laughed and put his hands under her arms and lifted her up so she could see better. Harin kicked her feet and wriggled out of Kai's grasp and he laughed. "Maybe you do need to skip breakfast, you're heavier than you look." He joked and Harin punched him as hard as she could in the shoulder. Her face burned as she straightened out her uniform, when did he get strong enough to easily lift her like that? The crowd started moving towards them and once they reached the front stairs they could see who they were following. It was a tall handsome boy with styled hair and sharp eyes. He looked over towards Kai and Harin and then looked away as he made his way into the school.

"Why does he look familiar?" Harin mentioned as they went into their classroom and saw the handsome boy sitting in the back corner of the class staring out the window, trying not to pay attention to the girls talking to him. Kai and her sat beside each other on the opposite side of the classroom and as she was hooking her bag onto the side of her desk she couldn't help but steal one more glance at the boy who was staring straight back at her. She felt a flash of heat run up her neck and she quickly turned away and the boy sitting in front of her turned around and rested his elbow on her desk.

"I lost my number, can you give me yours?" He asked and gave Harin a wink. She stared at him, very confused and the boy looked over at Kai who was glaring at him with a fire behind his eyes. "I-It was a joke...I was joking...my name is Baekhyun." He reached out and grabbed Harin's hand, shaking it rather violently. Kai grabbed his arm and threw it away.

"Go be creepy with someone else." Kai threatened but Baekhyun laughed.

"Why would I when there is such a handsome man sitting behind me?" Baekhyun wriggled his eyebrows at Kai which made Harin burst out laughing. Baekhyun couldn't help but stare at her but with one quick glance at Kai he forced himself to stop because he wanted to live through the first day. The boy in the back corner kept staring at the three of them laughing and talking and had to force himself to look away as he felt the jealousy growing in the pit of his stomach. Class finally started and Harin pushed her notebook in between their desks so Kai would be able to follow along since he flat out refused to take notes of his own.

The morning seemed to drag on forever so when the lunch bell rang, Kai sighed loudly and jumped up from his desk and stormed out of the classroom to get in line for food. Everyday Kai had to buy lunch because his mom never made him any. Every time she went over to his apartment his mom would be working one of her many jobs so they would usually end up ordering chicken or noodles so when Kai could get rice and soup for lunch it was a nice break from all the takeout he would eat. Harin grabbed her bag with her lunch in it and as she stood up she felt a tap on her shoulder. Standing there was the new kid and Harin felt herself shaking as he towered over her.

"My name is Oh Sehun." His deep voice matched his intimidating demeanor and Harin just stared at him for a few seconds before reminding herself that she was being rude.

"I'm Lee Harin, nice to meet you." She stuck out her hand and Sehun smirked and shook her hand awkwardly.

"I was wondering if you could show me where the lunch room was." He asked and Harin happily obliged and as they left the classroom she felt the glares from the rest of the girls.

"So, how are you liking our school so far?" Harin asked as they walked down the hallway.

"It's nice; better than my last one. Who was that guy you were sitting with, the tall kid." As they walked into the crowded areas of the hallway Sehun made sure to put himself between Harin and the people so she wouldn't get squished which made Harin's heart flutter a little. Kai never would do anything like that, most days he would shove her into the groups and run away laughing.

"Oh do you mean Kai? I guess he's kind of tall." Harin grabbed onto her sleeve when she saw him staring to take the wrong turn, he smiled and thanked her.

"Is he your boyfriend?" Sehun asked as he pulled her out of the way of some running boys.

"Kai? My boyfriend?" Harin burst out laughing again at the thought of her relationship with Kai being seen as a romantic one. "Oh God no, we're just friends. I've known him since we were children." The two of them walked into the lunch room and Harin pointed out where the line for food was and she looked over and saw Kai sitting at a table with Baekhuyn.

"Thanks." Sehun put his hands in his pockets and stared down at Harin who shyly looked down and nodded her head.

"Anytime. If you need help with anything, don't be afraid to ask." Harin said as she happily skipped over to Kai's table. He had two trays of food while Baekhyun sat beside him and rambled on about his summer break.

"He wont shut up." Kai said with his mouth full of food and a grain of rice shot out and fell onto the table.

"You're disgusting." Harin took out her lunch and shivered at the thought of her and Kai being in that type of relationship. She saw him more like a brother than anything else. After she started eating her lunch, she heard the chair beside her being pulled out and all three of them looked over and saw Sehun sit beside them and begin eating his lunch.

"Uh, can we help you?" Baekhyun said and Kai rolled his eyes at the thought of being grouped together with the goof. Sehun looked at the two boys and then to Harin.

"Is it okay if I eat with you?" He asked her.

"Yes." Harin said.

"No." Kai replied with his mouth still full of food. Harin glared at Kai and kicked him under the table earning and grunt from him and then looked back at Sehun.

"Of course you can eat with us." Harin said and the three boys looked at each other and then went back to eating their lunches as the tension grew in the air. Harin didn't seem to notice as she happily conversed with Sehun for most of the lunch break. Every once in a while Baekhyun tried to talk to Kai but he never replied because he was too busy watching Harin.

"The plot thickens." Baekhyun mumbled as he shoved his mouth full of rice and spat it back out as a grain shot to the back of his throat. All three of them jumped up from the table in disgust as Baekhyun violently coughed.

"You idiot." Kai scolded him but ended up patting him on the back and Sehun gave him the last of his milk to clear his throat. Harin looked at the boys and couldn't help but smile at the thought of her friend group growing. After lunch they went back to class and finished the day off with Kai mostly sleeping through everything and Harin taking notes for the both of them. At the end of the day Harin ended up exchanging numbers with Baekhyun although Kai was very much against it and warned Baekhyun not to message her after ten at night because that's when she typically goes to bed. As they walked out of class Sehun joined their little group as they headed to the main gate.

"How was your first day? Not too scary I hope?" Harin asked Sehun and he just shrugged as he looked to Kai and Baekhyun who were giving him the death glare.

"Not too bad, you made it a lot easier." At his reply Harin nervously giggled which made Kai's stomach drop. For some reason he was finding it hard to be around the two of them.

"Come on loser, we have to get home." Kai threw his arm over Harin's shoulder and dragged her away down the street leaving Baekhyun and Sehun alone together at the front gates.

"Where do I know you from?" Baekhyun bluntly asked and Sehun laughed and scratched the back of his head.

"It's kind of embarrassing but I do some modeling." Sehun said as a fancy black car pulled up in front of them. "Want my number? We can hang out sometime." He was nervous that Baekhyun would say no but at the idea of exchanging numbers made the boy perk up.

"Of course you giant!" Baekhyun took his phone out and the two boys swapped numbers. Kai and Harin made it back to her building and he started following her inside.

"I'm going out to dinner with my parents tonight so you'll have to go now." Harin said once they reached the elevator. Kai playfully whined and stomped his feet on the ground. Harin giggled and reached up to ruffle his hair and Kai instantly froze. "If you're good i'll visit you afterwards, okay?" The elevator doors opened behind her and Harin said her goodbyes and went in. Once the elevator doors closed Kai gripped his chest and rested his head against the cold mental doors.

"Stupid girl." He sighed and headed over to his out of the building but he didn't want to be home alone so he went to his usual dance spot down in the trendy area of Seoul. It was there that the rest of the world vanished and he could clear his head but no matter how much he danced that night he couldn't shake the thought of Sehun and Harin and seeing her smile as she messed up his hair made his heart race. When did his stupid friend become a girl and why was it bothering him so much?
