Chapter 3: I've read a lot of seulrene fanfics after my first one being Dirty by HeavenWard and I've noticed that almost every Seulrene story in a highschool setting follows a particular formula, if I could call it that. Irene is always the highschool royalty, sometimes popular and sweet girl who's nice to everyone or a popular mean girl. Seulgi on the other hand is the highschool reject, a social outcast by choice or just a plain normal girl who the reader can relate to and she's usually the story's protagonist while Irene is someone untouchable and is seen from Seulgi and the reader's perspective. Wendy, Joy and Yeri are the sassy best friends who will bring the couple together after so many things preventing them from being together like Irene's boytoy, boyfriend or someone she's shipped with in some iterations, societal homophobia and the biggest problems of them all: themselves and their confunsed feelings for each other. These things do work and are fun to explore if done properly, I've seen some stories starting out with the same tropes but as the story develope the characters and tropes they've set up become more nuanced, prime example being Strawberries&Cigarettes by MeloMera. Despite that I think I'm getting bored and tired of stories in this setting with the same tropes and character traits.
That's why I'm so glad that you wrote sattire about them. First of all, this is hilarious, I think I managed to wake my family up in the middle of night laughing because of this story. Just from the first paragraph I knew this would be gold, the way Irene described herself similar to how literally every other fics described her as: a goddess among mortals, so that's great of her to be very self-conscious. And her boyfriend, Bogum (Lol), who in every iteration of a seulrene story will get sidelined as it goes on, here she doesn't even remember his name. The EssEm highschool (Lmao), this remind me of Kars, Esidisi and Wahmu in Jojo and how they tried to dodge the copyright. Then comes Seulgi, the super hot but a social reject in EssEm High and their wierd af teacher who is not very lowkey on shipping them. When the main couple meet, they gravitate towards each other, a simple attraction deepens into something that they both are afraid to face or just one of them is afraid to face in some stories. But then one day, one of them pops the question about their entire relationship or in this story, Irene, but she's reminded by her parents on why it's okay to like Girls Generation and not just girls and she will be forced to push her love interest away to maintain her perfect image. This is where the angst kicks in and remains there for a chapter or two. After that, Seulgi, having faced homophobia, becomes angsty and conveniently gets a rebound who is Krystal; I haven't seen this pairing a lot but if Seulgi's gonna have another love interest or a rebound, it's gonna be Krystal. Asking Krystal to come to homecoming with apparently strikes many birds with one stone, including making Irene jealous and regretting her actions regarding to how she wrongfully acused Seulgi. This gives Irene some motivation to woman up and snatch her bear back but that seems impossible now that Seulgi has a girlfriend so conveniently for Irene and the plot, Krystal happens to cheat and her boytoy just oh so conveniently happens to cheat on her and reveals that's he's gay. That Bogum plot twist is new to me, usually he'd be out of the plot after a third of the story. Anyway, their dates to Homecoming cheated on them and create a gateway for them to finally get together. And then they live happily ever after.
Also side Wenjoy is cute as hell, Joy being the sassy, out-going popular girl who clearly has a crush on the nervous, nerdy and also socially outcast Wendy, who is clearly a bottom. Why do I feel like there's a reocurring trend of Wendy being on the bottom of the bedroom dynamic?? Anyway, of course they'd have to get together offscreen and tell everyone about it later, like every side couple ever. Oh and the Seulgi big energy thing and all the futa ty stories, omg.
With all the one-liners and characters spilling out tropes and strerotypes every five seconds, you clearly took inspiration from Not another teen movie and other sattire of the teen, high school genre. The one-liners and the references do break immersion sometimes but it's not overwhelming. This was a fun read, I had a good laugh so thank you for writing this sattire about seulrene.
