Chapter 8

Undercover

Fire. Heat. Butterfly fingers. Chocolate kisses skimming the skin along your collarbone.

 Luhan’s fingers. Luhan’s touches. Luhan’s kisses.

It had been two weeks since your first date with Luhan. You two were officially together. Well as together as the two of you could be. The only person that knew about your relationship was Taesoo. You still laughed at the memory of when he found out. You and Luhan were kissing in the back storage room when Taesoo walked in, still wearing his jacket with his backpack slung over his shoulder. He had stuck out his hand, about to retrieve his work apron when noticed the two of you.

              Two weeks prior:

“Noona?! Is that you?!” he had shouted in shock and horror. You and Luhan broke apart abruptly, jumping so you were almost five feet away from each other. You looked over to see Taesoo staring at you guys with wide eyes, mouth hanging open in shock.

“Oh-h haha Taesoo, you’re back from school” Luhan had said while blushing and running his hand through his hair. Awkwardness aded the atmosphere.

“Yes I am back! It’s my shift now! But I didn’t expect to find YOU making out with my noona, what’s going on?” Taesoo said this indignantly while crossing his arms across his chest.

Luhan gave you a look as if to say: you didn’t tell him?

“Uhhh, Taesoo…me and Luhan are uhmm, going out” you said the last part sort of hesitantly because you weren’t sure if that was the right term to use in this situation.

“How do you even know each other?”

“I met him the other day when I came to pick up some coffee and you weren’t here”

Taesoo glanced back and forth between the two of you in a suspiciously cute manner and you struggled to hold in a laugh.

“Why didn’t you tell me about this noona? Something about this is fishy” He had said

“I was going to tell you…today!”He just stood there. Looking back and forth between the two of you.

“This is weird. I guess I’ll believe you for now but…” he said turning to Luhan

“you better not break her heart, or else…” Taesoo said this while punching his fists together ‘intimidatingly’.

“Don’t worry. I won’t. She’s too special for that.” Luhan said this while smiling and ruffling Taesoo’s hair with affection.

You had blushed at his words.

Now, the two of you were in the back room again. Luhan had pushed you up against a silver counter. One of his hands was placed on your upper thigh while his other cupped the back of your neck. His lips were soft against yours as he kissed you hesitantly at first his hands tenderly caressing your cheek and then trailing all the way down to your hip, sending shivers down your spine.

His kisses soon became more hungry and needy. He bit your lip and you let out a cry of pain and pleasure. His hands lingered at the hem of your shirt and then slowly made their way under till they rested on the bare skin of your stomach, side and then lower back. Not wanting to seem too submissive, you buried your hands into his soft silky hair while lifting yourself up to sit on the counter so you were at the same level as him. You kissed him back with the same force and hunger. When you pulled back a little to take a breath you registered the smell of coffee and aftershave. You loved it. Luhan’s hand slid up your stomach all the way to the edge of your bra. The kisses began to be drawn out and tender; the fire of them did not burn out though. His hand reached the edged of your bra, you could feel him reaching under. You gasped.

He immediately pulled back a little, letting his hand drop.

“Is this okay? Am I going to fast?” he said this with a worried look on his face.

You shook your head. You knew your cheeks were flushed, your lips raw, and your heart was beating erratically. The two of you hadn’t gone that far before. You wanted it. You really did. But you were nervous.

“no, no it’s fine” You leaned in and pressed your lips against his again. Your hair had come out of its messy bun and was now hanging like a dark curtain around your faces. He wound his fingers in your hair. You wanted to stay there forever and do this with Luhan. But you knew that you couldn’t.

“I should get going soon, my family is probably wondering where I am right now” You said this quietly while pulling away, you didn’t like to lie to Luhan but it was safer for him to not know the truth.

Luhan looked at you sadly with his large chocolate eyes that made you feel like he could see right through you.

“Okay then. When are you coming back?”

“Mmmmm, can we meet up on Sunday?”

“Damn, that’s three days. How am I supposed to go that long without seeing you?” he said this half-jokingly half seriously. You could not ignore the butterflies it gave you.

“Yah, I have other things to do you know. I can’t just make out with you here all day”

“I know you want to” he said this with a smirk and you playfully scowl at him.

“Okay then, come back soon then, I’ll be waiting for you” He said this before giving you a peck on the lips one last time.

There were only a few people in the coffee shop when you left. The moment you stepped outside, the vile wind sliced across your skin. Your coat did not help much and your scarf was small and flimsy. Something was wrong. You could sense it. You felt like you were being watched, but one sweeping look around proved the area to be clear except for a few harmless pedestrians going about their own business. You did not see anything or anyone suspicious but you felt it. If you learned anything from being in the institute, it was to trust your instincts. As you made your way around the corner of the street you noticed a flash of black and blue in the corner of your eye.

When you turned around you could barely make out the outline of a figure slipping down the alleyway across the street. It was dark outside so you could not see that clearly. You could tell that it was a female though.

Was she the one that was watching me?

You debated whether you should follow her or not. But when you checked your watch you saw that you were already late. You stood there, in the middle of the sidewalk, torn between going back and following the mysteriously suspicious figure or returning to the institute.

You decided to return to the institute. Maybe that person wasn’t stalking you and you were overreacting. But you still made a note to yourself to be more aware next time.

As you walked back, the rhythm of your steps along with the lull of the wind and the sounds of the city allowed you to become lost in your thoughts.

You hadn’t talked to Sehun in a while. Of course you guys had exchanged a few words here and there but not talk talked. You felt as if he were growing distant. You realized it was probably your fault since you weren’t training at the institute a lot anymore. Usually during your free time you were at the coffee shop with Luhan, using the excuse that you were at home taking care of your mom. Sehun also had been extremely busy lately with numerous jobs at hand that you were not assigned to. You couldn’t help but think that it was because of the previously failed mission the he was being worked so harshly.

The other day you had caught him walking out of the institute. His face was paler than usual and the purple and blue shadows under his eyes were so prominent, it was frightening. His cheekbones were a bit sharper than the previous time you had seen him, probably from lack of a good meal because he was constantly working, job after job. When he saw you he smiled and waved; he was about to make his way over when someone called his name. You recognized the person as Baekhyun, another second-level agent at the institute. Sehun looked at you with a pained expression as if to say ‘sorry, we haven’t talked in a while. I promise I’ll be back soon’. You had nodded at him understandingly.

For some reason your heart ached. You missed him.

But that did not change the decision you had already made. You would go with Kai. You would join the Blue Pearl. You would get the files back for Sehun and Key. You couldn’t help but feel like it was your fault the mission was failed. The guilt was ever-present, like a permanent shadow.

You were meeting with Kai tonight. You had told Key about everything and your plan. At first he had protested, saying it was too dangerous and that the files weren’t that  important. But even as he said this, you caught the deeper meaning in his voice, the thing that he did not want to say out loud and admit. They were vitally important to the Black Pearl as a whole. Eventually Key agreed to your decision. Kai said that he would send another agent to meet with Key and hand over the files while you had to meet him by yourself in the old parking lot located somewhere around the institute. You wrote a note to Sehun, promising to contact him once you were safely settled in to the Blue pearl. You were pretty sure that when the time came for you to meet Kai, Sehun would be at a job. You knew he would be furious, but there would be no way for him to find you and put himself in more danger, because he had no idea where the Blue pearl headquarters were. You knew that if Sehun got the files back, he would no longer be worked to death by the Head. You just wanted him to be healthy again. You trusted Key to explain everything to him once he found the note.

Tears were forming in your eyes as you slipped the note under the door of Sehun’s room. You knew that it was not a final good bye. But you also knew that you could not see or contact him for a while without rousing suspicion within the Blue pearl. You were angry at yourself for crying. You had to stay strong. You noisily sniffled and wiped your tears with the sleeves of your jacket.

It was 10:20pm. You had to leave. Key was already positioned at the back of the institute building.

The night air was cold as you stepped cautiously out of the side door of the building. You only brought a backpack filled with clothes, food, and a first aid kit (just in case). You stuck a knife in your combat boots and the pistol Key had given you for your 16th birthday, in your belt. You buried your cold hands in your coat pockets and furtively made your way along the side of the building, back pressed against the wall. When you reached the street intersection you made sure the coast was clear before running across. Only one orange-tinted streetlight lit the area. A few old cars were parked along the curb and graffiti decorated the buildings. You ran down a small hill, making sure to stay low at the same time.

It did not take you long to reach the parking structure. The edifice was worn down and the cement was covered with stains and graffitied with erse symbols. The inside smelled of urine, rot, and lead paint. It was completely empty save for a few useless, abandoned cars. Trash was littered across the ground. You made your way towards the inner sections; your ears could not perceive any sound except for the erratic thudding of you heart. You hoped this was not a trap.

You were startled by the sound of your phone buzzing in your pocket. You took it out and saw that the message was from Key.

I received the files. Contact me when you can. Be safe.

So they did come. And they kept their word. You were just about to continue walking deeper into the parking structure when you suddenly saw a shadow emerge from behind you, accompanied by a voice.

                 “You’re late”

you turned around to see Kai stepping out from behind a large van. He carried a revolver in his hand and he was dressed head to toe in black. “I thought I was going to have to go and Kidnap you. You know, gag-cloth and all.”

“Well, I’m sorry. I wasn’t the one who chose this hellish meeting place that’s extremely hard to find and” you crinkled your nose, “smells like dead bodies and piss” you were exaggerating. But still.

Kai smirked and gracefully spun the handle of the gun over and over in his hands while casually leaning against the large black van.

“I see you’re still as feisty as ever”

“Not feisty, just honest” you countered.

The two of you stood there for a moment in silence. You waited for him to tell you what to do but he just stood there looking at you with that infuriating smirk.

“So. What are we waiting for?” you asked, finally breaking the tension-filled silence.

                   “Chanyeol”

                   “Chanyeol?”

                   “Yes, Chanyeol. My partner”

You suddenly realized that he was the agent who delivered the files to Key. And almost coincidentally, as if he knew that you guys were talking about him, you saw a guy approaching the two of you inside the parking structure. As he got closer you saw that his face was rather handsome. His bronze-colored hair was longish and was swept perfectly across his forehead. He was tall, taller than Kai. And his legs were long and shoulders broad. However, when he got closer, you could see that his features were rather soft, almost angelic.

“Are we ready to go?” He asked as he approached the two of you. Seemingly uninterested, he barely gave you a second glance, directing his question towards Kai. You didn’t care though. You had a feeling that he was not as angelic as his face suggested; most likely the exact opposite, you thought.

Kai only nodded in response and tossed the gun he was playing with to Chanyeol. Kai jerked his head in the direction of the van, motioning for you to get in.

You walked over hesitantly. Kai opened the door for you before making his way towards the passenger seat. You took a deep breath. This was it, the moment you stepped inside was the moment you agreed to join these people. It was like a contract and the second you broke it was instant death.

Your heart beat faster. You almost wanted to just jump out of the car and run. Just run. Run away from all of this. But you knew you couldn’t. They would probably shoot me if I tried to escape.

Just as you were about to close the door, a shout echoed throughout the parking lot. The voice was heart-breakingly familiar and you almost gasped out loud.

                    “Not so fast!”
