"Park Chaeyoung!"

Three loud knocks on the aussies door rattled the doorknob.

"Did it appear yet?"

"It has to right? You are 15 now, unless you somehow lied to me?"

"You better open this door up right now before I come and break it open!"

Chaeyoung looked up from her inspection of the cocoon in the mirror that had appeared on her skin a few hours earlier.

It wasn't anything special, an elongated oval located under her bone.

Perhaps it's most stunning feature was the fact that instead of the usual black color the cocoon takes on before blooming, it was a bright yellow, almost too pale to see in the dark.

"Jisoo-yah?"

"Yes?"

"Shut up" The girl behind the door grew silent knowing that Chaeyoung only grew irritated if something was wrong.

With a sigh Chaeyoung moved to unlock the door, flicking the lights on behind her.

"It's yellow!" Jisoo's eyes grew almost comically wide at the sight of the cocoon, Jisoo's own black with a white cat outline in the middle, and located on her collarbone. Bboth girls ignore the fact that Chaeyoung was only in a sports bra and shorts.

They've seen enough of each others bodies to be completely ignore each other's blatant ness.

Chaeyoung turned and gave Jisoo a 'wow! I totally didn't notice that' look before bursting into tears.

Jisoo wrapps her arms around her, chuckling to herself at the quick mood change.

"Are you l-laughing? How dare you! Your best friend is crying and you're laughing!?" Chaeyoung looked like a three year old throwing a temper tantrum, long strawberry blonde hair sticking to the tear tracks on her face.

"That's it, I knew i shouldn't have let you in!"

"Woah! Calm down Chae, just tell me what's wrong and maybe it won't be so bad ok?

Chaeyoung pauses before blurting out "It already faded six times since it appeared!"

Gently guiding Chaeyoung over to the bed Jisoo couldn't help but frown.

The cocoon was very much the only information you had on your soulmate before you met them.

The length of the cocoon usually gave an accurate guess on their height.

A symbol could could describe their personality or name.

However, when a cocoon faded in meant that your soulmate was dying.

In this situation it seemed that in the time span of her soulmate being born and to now, her soulmate had escaped death six times.

Chaeyoung would spend the next five years frantically searching for her soulmate, constantly walking up to strangers, even leading to Jisoo's own soulmate, a cold girl at first glance, but soft on the inside.

She later learned that Jennie had a friend who had a form of butterfly cancer, a cancer caused by the marking itself, turning for the worse when the patient reached their 15th birthday.

They never survived past their 20th birthday and finding a soulmate for them was almost impossible.

Chaeyoung could only hope that the girl would meet her soulmate before it was too late.

~~

In the middle of a hospital room, age 15, Lalisa Manoban had just finished swallowing her last pill for the day when her best friend, Jennie Kim, pointed at the bare skin exposed from her stretching and declared rather loudly to the otherwise empty room "Your cocoon appeared"

"Agk! Your fingers are so cold Nini!"

"Yah- Lisa, sit still , your soulmate must be really pretty, look there's even a rose."

Jennie couldn't help but feel sorry for Lisa's soulmate. Symbols were rare and here a girl dying from the mark itself was given the most special one.

Jennie's cocoon wasn't lacking though, it was a prism of colors, always changing in the light.

She was honestly just glad it was on her arm and not anywhere else where it would be awkward to angle the light just right for the colors to appear.

Lisa had no idea how someone could look so horrified and sound so dull at the same time.

Jennie Kim really was one of a kind.

Glancing down she pulled her shirt up to reveal a black cocoon almost covered in baby pink mini roses.

"I'm guessing that she's about 5'6 when she's an adult, her favorite color is baby pink, aaaand..... she's pretty like rose?"

At this point Lisa felt sad, angry, happy, and a variety of mixed feelings in a sort span of 3 seconds.

She knew her time wasn't enough to search for her soulmate forever and she also couldn't leave the hospital for too long.

"I'm never going to meet them am I?, Oh god, they'll be the only kid with a dead soulmate. Do you think that they will come visit my grave?"

Lisa's parents started to silently cry from the footage from the security camera.

The nurses looked at them with sympathy before taking another glance at the girl who had to grow up so much faster than the average teen.

Short brown hair was falling like grass as Lisa began to twist and yank on her already weak hair.

Jennie threw herself onto Lisa wrapping her arms around the taller girls thin frame crying with her because she didn't want to lose her friend over a stupid mark.

Soulmates be damned.

They shut the screen off.

A few years later under a pouring shower  3 figures huddled under a canopy, grinning at an reenactment of a dead girl flinching to a cold finger.

~~

"Hey, if you see this it probably means that Jennie-unnie found my soulmate. Congratulations unnie! I'm sure you worked hard!"

Said Jennie-unnie could only smile weakly in return and nod in reply to the video playing on screen, the chubby face and bangs so achingly familiar, the smile wide on a gaunt figure.

"Also, I just wanna say thank you to Jisoo, you probably had to go through so many rantings of hers right? Just kidding! She probably bullied you into doing weird things right? Sorry but GO UNNIE!!" The figure just shrugged her bony shoulders casually.

Jisoo couldn't help but fall in love with her girlfriends best friend once over, a life that was taken so soon.

She was a great buddy to play pranks with during the few visits with Jennie.

"Hi soulmate! Sorry that we couldn't ever meet in person, but I'm sure that you are the most attractive and cute person on the planet...I think Jennie said your name was Chaeyoung?.. Jennie you better have been correct, or else you're explaining this to them, not me... um ...Oh yeah, I forgot, you probably want to see your mark right?"

The girl lifted her shirt showing mountains of surgical scars and needles and... a black cocoon covered in baby pink roses. "Jennie-unnie you can give the box to them now. I hope that you're a female. I only got girl clothes becuase I'm pretty sure I'm gay otherwise whoever got me into this mess will have to pay." There's a dramatic pause with clenched fist in the air.

Chaeyoung giggled at the bluntness her soulmate portrayed when delivering the news.

She looked over at Jennie who hesitantly gave her a box full of things including pictures of her would be soulmate framed in baby pink.

A picture of Lisa in a suit with the captions 'Don't I look just fabulous?' lay on the very top framed in fake roses.

 "Typical Lisa"

Jennie could only muffle out her words through Jisoo's shoulder.

Chaeyoung suddenly felt an unexpected warmth at the love of a soulmate never met.

"I also researched in soulmates and I realized that it's possible for you to still bloom so I added things that would remind you of our connection. I love you soulmate, see you in the afterlife"

Later Chaeoung would hurriedly take off her shirt in front of a mirror, and gaped as her cocoon seemed to return on her skin, the faded color now a bright yellow.

The largest butterfly wings had sprouted out of her cocoon and to Chaeyoung it was the most breathtaking thing in the world.

Lisa's heart fluttered after the filming and she righted herself, before smiling again at the lone teary eyed but proud figure holding the camera.

One could only imagine.
