PROLOGUE

The sound of the doorbell ringing made me jump out of my seat, nearly hitting my knee on the underside of the dining table in the process.  I stood up and quickly gathered together my things; a coat, my purse, and an umbrella, just in case.  The weather this time of the year was so unpredictable.

            I felt proud as I walked towards the front door, in my new outfit.  I had spent every last penny to my name on that blouse, that skirt, and those patent black heels.

            There was no time for messing around anymore.  I had to get this job.

            It was all or nothing, now or never.  Today, or too late.

            Barely having finished taking a deep breath, I opened the door and was greeted by an older gentleman in a fine suitcoat with white gloves and sturdy brimmed hat.  We bowed to each other in greeting.

            “Ms. Bae?”  he said, after we were both standing up straight again.

            “Yes, I am she.” I answered immediately.

            “Excellent.  Come with me,
