TWO

With the Help of a Translator

“Hahaha, very funny, my name’s Irene, by the way, I work at a company called Redluvs,” I told him.

He chuckled and said, “Well, nice to meet you, my name is Hanbin, but you can call me B.I., I’m in a band in South Korea, and we are pretty famous not that I would like to brag.”

“Oh really now, is that your bandmates over there?” pointing behind him towards the boys that he arrived with onto the plane.

“Yes, they are, the rowdy boys that came with me. We are called iKon. If you want I’ll introduce you to them later.”

“Really? You’ll do that to a stranger you’ve just met? We aren’t that close yet. We have merely introduced ourselves.”

“Well, why not? No harm; done, right? I meant unless you don’t want to meet them.”

Putting her hands up and waving it rigorously as if she’s saying no.  “Of course I would like to meet them, but will that be okay with them”

“I’m sure they’ll be just as ecstatic as I am.”

“Okay…. If you insist.”

Throughout the flight, she had forgotten about her reports, and he had forgotten that this was an excellent opportunity to sleep, since once they land, they would have no time to rest. At the most, they enjoyed each others company. You know what they say ‘the type of conversations that end only because of sleep’ is the best.

About eight hours into the flight, she could tell that he was getting sleepy, so she had said to him that she would go to the bathroom and if he wanted he should get some rest. After about five minutes of just staying in the bathroom, she washed her hands and headed towards her seat. There she found him softly snoring and his head on his side on the armrest in an uncomfortable sleeping position. Once she finally got to her seat without disturbing him, she places her red, white and black plaid blanket on him and carefully put a neck pillow in-between his neck and shoulder.

After she placed the blanket and neck pillow on him, she finally started her reports. She was a workaholic; she had worked on the documents the rest of the flight without getting a wince of sleep. Only after she finished her statements would she be satisfied enough to sleep.

Finally, as they had finally landed in Seoul, she had finished her reports and tucked her mini laptop away. She began to stretch, and her limbs and her arm had accidentally hit B.I in the face, which had caused him to wake up. She immediately turned towards and apologized.

He woke up to see her hands together and saying sorry over and over again. He smiled and told, “Don’t worry about it. Accidents happen. I’m sorry, I fell asleep on you, I didn’t mean to, I was just so tired after our little conversation. So how’d you sleep?”

“ Well…. Ummmm…. I didn’t sleep,” she said as she was scratching her head, “ I…. um…. Was working on my reports after you fell asleep.”

“Wow. You are a total workaholic; you don’t stop do you?”

“No, not till I’m satisfied.”

He chuckled, “Okay then, I hope once we get off this plane you get some sleep.”

“Yes, will do.”

As they finally got off the plane, Irene, and Hanbin and split up. She, however, forgot to get her translator back. Walking towards the baggage claim, she saw B.I. with s but didn’t want to interrupt so she went on the other side of where they were standing so they wouldn't see her.

Once Hanbin had gotten off the plane, he was dragged away by s and managers to the baggage claim. He did not have the chance to give her translator back to her. He wondered if he’ll ever get to see her again.

As they were walking to the baggage claim, s had bombarded him with questions about the girl he sat next to on the plane.

“So, who is she?” asked Ju-ne.

“She was pretty! Did you get her number?” DK asked.

“Dude, spill it! I saw you guys talking whenever I woke up from my naps. Y’all had talked for a long time!” Bobby told him.

“You are lucky that none of the saesangs saw her face or you would have been dead! But lucky you, man, I wish I sat next to her!” Jinhwan said.

“Come on, when are you going to tell us everything! We want to know!” Chanwoo had demanded.

“So what’s her name? What does she do? Does she know who we are?” Yunhyeong asked.

All of them had bombarded him with so many questions that he did not even have the chance to speak.

“Guys… guys -- hello?... YAH!!” He slightly raised his voice. “You guys aren’t even giving me a chance. Come on now; I’ll tell you guys everything when we get to the baggage claim.”

As soon as they arrived there, he told them what he knew about her. Who she is, where she works and some little habits he had noticed when they were talking to each other, he enjoyed her presence. He described her like she was a goddess. He also even told them that he was going to introduce them to her but were dragged away without even saying goodbye.

Since he was talking to them and his back was to the entrance of the baggage claim, he did not see her come in to claim her baggage until one of the members pointed it out to him.

“Hey, B.I isn’t that her over there? Are you going to introduce us now?” Bobby said as he was pointing across the room to where she was standing.

B.I smiled brightly and gestured for the boys to come along.

Irene was on her phone looking down to her feet as she had already claimed her baggage and was now waiting for her ride and human translator to get here. While she was scrolling through her emails, she saw feet beneath her phone. She looked up to see who it was and saw B.I.

Both of them hadn’t realized that the translator was still on and in their ears. They had gotten used to it on the plane.

“Hey….didn’t see you there, so what brings you all the way over here? Weren’t you standing over there,” pointing to where they had just been standing?

“Yea… we were, but then I remember that I told you that I'd introduce you to my members and so here we are.”

“Oh yeah, I remember. Hi guys, I’m Irene, it’s nice to meet you guys.”

Hanbin slowly but surely introduced each of the members to her, and she had somehow pronounced their names correctly the first time but struggled with it afterward.

“Well, it has been a pleasure to meet you guys but looks like my ride's here. I’ll catch you guys later? Maybe?” she said before she sped off to meet her driver and translator.

“Well, guys look like you guys met her. So what do you think? Isn’t she pretty?”

They all told him that she was so pretty and voice was so smooth and pleasant to listen to, and they enjoyed her presence.

“Wait! How’d did you even talk to her? She was speaking in English the whole time, and you don’t understand or speak it, only Bobby and DK knows it” Jinhwan had told him.

They all looked to him. He was scratching his head near his ear and realized that he still had her translator.

“While we are the flight I was talking to her through this,” taking out the translator out of his ear and showing it to them, “It's hers, and I forgot to give it to her too. Man, I'm so stupid, how could I forget? Maybe next time I see her?” He said as he was shrugging his shoulders.

“Dude, you don’t even know what she does. All she said was that she was on a business trip. You might not even be able to find her. She’s gone now dude,” Ju-ne told him.

“Come on guys! You are going to be late for your next schedule!” yelled their managers. And then they scurried away to their managers.

‘Maybe next time.’
