With the Help of a Translator

The very first time I saw him was when he boarded the plane. I was heading to South Korea for the first time in my life, but it wasn't for my amusement, it was for work, but I was quite glad about it. It meant that I would have a change of pace, see and meet new people.

Since I had already boarded the plane and was in my seat, I waited for the other few people to board, this plane ride was meant to be a private and only a people who had the money could use it. And I one of the lucky few, snagged a seat on this aircraft.

While I was waiting, I called my secretary to make sure that he had scheduled all my meetings a day ahead.

As I was talking to him in English, I heard very loud yawns and chuckles, so I turned around and gave them a confused look, my brows were all furrowed up.

I guessed they felt sorry and instantly bowed to me as if they were saying sorry. (Just to be clear, Irene here doesn't know much Korean.)

I was born in Korea, but right after I was born, my family moved to America, so the bowing wasn't what I was accustom to.

So I gave them a small giggle and smiled. After that little mishap, I carried on back to my conversation on the phone.

Once the boys finally place their things away, one approached me, smiles and sits next to me. I nod and smile back.

I notice that there are some girls with big cameras are on board and are trying to take photos of them. Some of them even give me nasty stares, I ignore them and try to end my conversation with my secretary swiftly and smoothly.

I notice that once he sat down, he turned around to face his “friends” and yell out to them ‘yeopo.’ I honestly didn't know what he said and looked at them cluelessly before turning back to my mini laptop and continue typing about pre-meetings and plans for the management team to look over.

Once the plane was ready to take off, I put away my laptop and stare out the window.

The flight was going to be 14 hours long. This flight is going to be one hell of a ride.

Finally, when we were in the air, it was announced that we could now use our electronics, instantly I pulled out my mini laptop. My Bluetooth translator had fallen out of my bag with it. The Bluetooth translator I had ordered just especially for this trip.

I thought to myself that this would be an excellent opportunity to see if it works. I then my phone and the translators, placed one in my ear and slightly turned towards the person next to me and gently tapped his shoulder. When he finally turned towards me, he looked so confused, yet he seemed so attractive.I gestured for him to please place the translator into his ear, at first he was confused, but he complied anyway.

My first conversation with him went pretty well. ( this conversation was ‘processed’ through the translator and into the other person’s ear)

“Hmmm, I’m sorry if this is strange for you but I just wanted to try out my translator for my upcoming meetings with someone who spoke Korean,” I told him.

He chuckled, and boi was that y. The translator had repeated it into my ear, and I felt like I could probably listen to it all day.

“No worries, this isn’t the strangest thing I have experienced in my life so far. Besides, I’m glad to help a ‘lady in distress.’ So does this translator work?” He asked.

I nodded. ‘Oh, boi he probably doesn’t want to talk to me and just wanted to sleep. T my bad,’ I thought to myself.

“If you don’t want to keep this conversation going you can just hand me back the translator; I won’t mind. I mean it was rather rude of me to--you know-- just hand you an earpiece and practically make you put it in your ear. Just to make sure if this thing works,” I said to him.

He smiled at me and shook his head and said, “ Don’t worry about it. I wanted to speak to you too. However, I didn’t know how. Thank god for this.”
