Chapter 14

Cappuccinos & Crushes

The fair turned out to be a great idea.

Sowon and Eunha showed up half an hour later, rosy cheeked and smiling shyly, with their hands clasped together. They thanked everyone for the very obvious set-up and told them they’d meet up with them later. The last Yerin saw of them was Eunha very cutely asking Sowon to win her a prize.

Not long after Sowon and Eunha left, Yuju begged Umji to go with her to the haunted house. The maknae had looked like she’d rather jump off a cliff than go, but SinB had basically answered for her, pushing Umji into Yuju.

Before they left, SinB grabbed Umji by the arm and whispered to her, “Hold her when she gets scared.” SinB had smirked in Yerin’s direction before adding, “Girls can get really clingy, and you’ll be perfect for her to cuddle in fear.”

SinB looked proud of herself when it was just her and Yerin. She reached for Yerin’s hand and smiled as she tucked their hands back inside Yerin’s coat pocket. The couple wandered around, scoping out the fair at first. There were plenty of games set up with cute prizes (at least one of which Yerin was going to get SinB win for her) and other booths for arts and crafts.

Yerin dragged SinB over to a jewelry booth, in awe of the handmade necklaces and rings. SinB looked completely uninterested and even a little bored, but Yerin knew if SinB really didn’t want to be there, she would’ve said something. Yerin cooed over all of the dainty jewelry and gasped when she saw a display of gold necklaces with little gem pendants.

“Aren’t these pretty, Eunbi-yah?” Yerin asked, tugging her girlfriend closer to look.

SinB barely spared a glance at them before saying absent-mindedly, “Not as pretty as you, Yerin-ah.”

Unbiddingly, Yerin felt a blush rise to her cheeks. She playfully elbowed SinB. “Yah, when did you get so smooth?”

“I’ve always been this charming,” SinB teased. “Come on, we can look more later. I’m hungry.”

Yerin agreed easily, letting SinB lead her towards all of the food stalls. While SinB got their food, she found a table towards the edge of the fair. SinB took a while, but the lines were long so Yerin just hummed to entertain herself. She was startled when a hand suddenly clapped down on her shoulder. Yerin turned around and smiled when she saw her old friend from middle school, Hayoung.

“I knew it was you!” Hayoung laughed. She sat down beside her and gave her a hug, leaving her arm around Yerin’s shoulders. “It’s been so long, Yerin-ssi. How’ve you been?”

“I’ve been good,” Yerin replied. “How about you?”

“I’ve been good too,” Hayoung said, “Let’s exchange numbers so we can meet up another time."

They traded phones and typed their numbers in. After getting her phone back, Hayoung said, “I’d better get going. My friends are probably wondering where I am. Who are you here with?”

Before Yerin could answer, a food tray slammed down onto the table. Both girls jumped and noticed SinB standing in front of them, face emotionless.

“Sorry I took so long Yerin-unnie,” SinB said, voice just as indifferent as her face. “Who’s your friend?”

The title hit Yerin hard, and she tried to figure out what triggered SinB’s cold facade. Realizing SinB’s eyes were glued to Hayoung’s arm around her shoulders, Yerin quickly shrugged it off and explained, “This is my friend from middle school, Hayoung-ssi. Hayoung-ssi, this is my girlfriend, SinB-ah.”

Hayoung’s eyebrows rose in understanding as she hurriedly stood up and bowed. “Nice to meet you, SinB-ssi. I haven’t seen Yerin-ssi in a few years, but I’ll leave you to your date.” She waved to both girls and mouthed ‘sorry’ to Yerin before she left.

SinB sat down stiffly, staring down at the corn dogs and funnel cake she’d just bought. Yerin knew all too well about SinB’s shifting moods, especially since they started dating. It didn’t mean she knew how to deal with them. Sometimes it just took a joke to snap SinB out of it, but it could also make things worse, meaning it could be better to just let her calm down on her own.

Not wanting to spend the rest of the night in silence, Yerin decided to make a joke. “You teased me about Eunseo-ssi, but who’s jealous now?”

There was a beat of silence, and all Yerin could think was that she’d made the wrong decision.

Thankfully, SinB was just too embarrassed to reply. Her cheeks turned red as she eventually protested childishly, “I was not jealous!”

“Who’s your friend?” Yerin imitated how SinB had sounded, low and teeming with barely restrained fury. “You were sooo jealous!”

“She was all over you!” SinB snapped, though her voice was more whining than angry. “I leave you alone for two seconds and suddenly a girl is throwing herself at you!”

Yerin couldn’t help but laugh. It was clear SinB wasn’t actually that mad about Hayoung. More likely, SinB had just gotten jealous enough to incite some pettiness, and not to the point Yerin had been when she’d started their fight.

SinB huffed and bit at her corn dog moodily. She chewed in a sulky silence before saying petulantly, “I’m sorry for being rude to your friend.”

“Like I said, we’re trying in this relationship,” Yerin repeated. “As long as we’re trying.”

“Right, trying.”

“Besides,” Yerin said, using her aegyo, “no one can beat my Eunbi-yah.”

“Aish,” SinB jokingly cringed. “Just eat your food, you weirdo. I’m gonna win you a prize, but you’ve gotta hurry if you want a good one.”

Yerin happily complied. She’d thought she’d have to beg SinB to win her something, but here she was offering. She’s sure SinB would swear until she died that she wasn’t a romantic, but if this wasn’t romance, Yerin wasn’t sure what was.

Three games and many booths later, Yerin was practically shining as she carried around a stuffed duck. On her head was a headband with a halo attached from the second game. Even better were the devil horns she’d chosen as another prize and convinced SinB to wear. She had already taken a selca of them wearing their headbands and set it as her wallpaper. However, Yerin had one more stop to make before the night was over.

“I’ve got to use the restroom,” Yerin lied to SinB. “Could you find us spots to watch the fireworks while I go?”

“Yeah, sure.”

Yerin headed in the direction of the restrooms, but once she was sure SinB couldn’t see her anymore, she went in the opposite direction, toward the jewelry booth. She smiled at the lady sitting behind the displays before quickly picking out what she wanted. She paid and thanked the seller, heading back before SinB got suspicious.

Yerin found SinB sitting with the girls in a patch of grass and joined them. She was happy to see everyone looking happier than they’ve been lately, including herself. Sowon and Eunha had an arm around each other’s waists. Yuju had an arm around a blushing Umji who was avoiding everyone’s eyes by picking at blades of grass. Yerin herself had her head resting on SinB’s shoulder, smiling when SinB wrapped her arms around her.

The girls oohed and ahhed over the fireworks, talking intermittently about what they’d done at the fair. Apparently SinB’s prediction had been accurate about girls and scary things because Yuju had laughingly told them about how she’d basically jumped into Umji’s arms in the haunted house. Meanwhile, Eunha was showing off the giant stuffed bunny Sowon had won her after playing a game six times.

After the fireworks were done, the girls wished each other good-night and split up into their previous couples.

“Come here,” SinB said, leading Yerin back to where she’d first kissed her earlier than evening. She let Yerin rest against the tree and suddenly couldn’t meet her eyes. Yerin noticed SinB was fidgeting with something in her hands and gently rested a hand over hers. SinB looked up, wide-eyed. She bit her lip and shoved something in Yerin’s face. “Here.”

Yerin accepted a familiar looking velvet pouch and opened it. Curious, she reached in and picked up a simple gold necklace with a teardrop-shaped, yellow gem. When she realized what it was, she couldn’t help but laugh.

“What?” SinB demanded. “What is it? If you don’t like it, then give it back.” She tried to snatch it, but Yerin kept it from reach, still laughing.

“It’s not like that, Eunbi-yah,” Yerin reassured her once her laughter subsided. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a velvet pouch identical to the one SinB had given her.

SinB connected the dots and smiled in disbelief. “You didn’t.” She grabbed the pouch from Yerin and pulled out a necklace identical to the one she had given to Yerin, the only difference being that the gem was red.

“Great minds think alike,” Yerin joked. “When did you even get this?”

“Before I got our food.” Ah, that explained why she’d been extra jealous when she saw Hayoung with her. She probably wouldn’t have been too happy either if she saw SinB with another girl after buying a necklace for her. “When did you buy it?”

“I didn’t really need to use the restroom,” Yerin admitted sheepishly.

Still smiling, SinB shook her head and started to put on the necklace when Yerin stopped her.

“I want that one,” Yerin said, pointing to the red gem.

SinB squinted at her. “The one you bought for me?”

“It’s red.”

“Yeah, I know. It’s my favorite color.” At this point, SinB looked so confused that Yerin couldn’t help but laugh.

She gently took the necklace from her and replaced it with the one with the yellow gem. “This way I’ll always have you with me.”

SinB colored at the cheesy sentiment, wordlessly putting on the yellow necklace. Yerin did the same and smiled at how pretty it looked. She stepped forward and kissed SinB gently.

“Perfect.”

A/N: The necklaces were inspired by EyeforSR's story, "Save My Love." 10/10 would recommend you read it for all your sinrin feels. Also, this is how I imagined the necklaces SinB and Yerin's necklaces.
