"Yah, can you believe I drove all the way to that place just to buy this," Jiyong tore the saran wrap from the bowl and set it between him and his friend. Bless the ajumma, he chuckled.

It took a long time to find the old diner and Jiyong didn’t know to laugh or cry when he found it was still there. The owner instantly recognized him and welcomed him with open arms. She was warm and gentle, and was everything that one would expect from the typical grandmother.

Well… except for having the culinary skills of one.

“You should’ve seen the smile on her face,” he added as he sat down facing his friend. Feeling his companion’s curiosity perking up, he answered before the question was asked. “She is doing well,” he went on, smiling brightly. “We must’ve made her day you know, she was so overjoyed when I made the order."

Jiyong was sure that pleased his friend. He looked up and saw the other grinning, his eye-smiles shinning. A specialty of his, Jiyong laughed. He almost forgot how much he missed this moment. A single bowl of jjajangmyeon between the two of them. He took the two sticks that was placed near the bowl and held the stainless steel between his fingers.

"Youngbae-ah, eat up. It's been a long time since we shared a meal," he took a bite of the black bean noodle and almost spluttered the contents.

One would think after all these years that the taste could at least be better.

"Well at least it didn’t get any worse, tastes just like the old days right?"

Jiyong only smiled, his friend’s words playing in his mind. “Yeah…,” he sighed as he lowered his chin. “It still tastes the same, just like that day,” he took another bite and chuckled.

How he wished it was just like that day.
