First Date in the Moonlight

First Date in the Moonlight

Taehyung finished practice and called Hana up, retreating to the hallway of BigHit. He slid down the wall as the call connected, and soon enough he heard the voice that brought the brightest smile onto his face.

“Hana?” he said, “It’s me, Taehyungie.” A giggle sounded on the other line, and his smile stretched even more as his eyes squinted. “What are you doing?”

“I’m just being lazy on my bed. How was practice?” she asked.

“It was okay, I just called because… I thought maybe… We could go out tonight?” he asked, eager of her response.

Taehyung had confessed to her a few weeks prior, but he and Hana had never gone on a proper date with his hectic schedule. He felt sorry to her, but promised to make it up tenfold. He just wasn’t sure if anything he did could actually impress her, but there was no harm in trying.

There was a pause on the other end. “Tonight? Uhm… S-Sure!”

The boy let out a sigh of relief, clutching at his chest. “I’ll come by your house and we can go to the movie theatre nearby… Sounds good?”

Hana agreed and quickly hung up. Taehyung sprang up to his feet and announced his plans to his teammates, but before they could say anything he dashed towards the bathroom to take a shower and get ready. He stole some of Jungkook’s cologne and put on a dress shirt and dress pants. He looked a little too formal for a simple movie night out, but he still wished he would attract her attention. With one final look in the mirror, he ran out of the company building and made his way towards a bus stop.

On the other hand, Hana was practically crying. She hadn’t showered in days, her hair was a mess, legs unshaven to the point of looking like a Yeti’s alcoholic aunt, and to top it off her skin started breaking out due to stress. Taehyung had picked the worst possible day to ask her out, but she didn’t want to be rude and decline it when she wasn’t doing anything.

She tied her hair in a bun, quickly put whatever makeup she could find, and threw on a summer dress with leggings underneath. At least she was almost certain she wouldn’t be crossing anyone else she knew at that hour, though she probably would have traded that for looking decent in Taehyung’s presence. She really liked him, and was glad he took the first step towards her. She was praying she wouldn’t mess anything up with him, because scaring him off before the relationship would’ve started might just have been a new world record.

Her doorbell ringing made her jump up, and her heart was wedged in . She waddled to the intercom and pressed a button, the screen lighting up with the image of someone looking a little too close to the camera. Taehyung was making faces, until he broke into a laugh. Hana felt her cheeks burning up, and she pressed another button to let him know she was coming down.

Her palms began to sweat insanely, and she was surprised by it. She didn’t feel anxiety apart from when she was passing an exam, but at that moment she felt like she was going to become a human earthquake. She tried rubbing them off on the hem of her dress, but to no avail. Before stepping down the last set of stairs, she took a deep breath and tried to compose herself.

He came into view, and Hana’s heart skipped multiple beats. She didn’t think it possible, maybe she was developing a new medical condition. He had his hands in the pockets of his black pants, head slung back looking at the starless sky. The creaking door made him come back to reality and he whipped his head to look at Hana shyly making her way towards him, holding the strap of her purse across her chest.

Taehyung leaned in to kiss her on the cheek, but realized he had gotten too excited and overstepped his bounds for a second. Instead, when he leaned in he said, “You smell nice.”

Smooth.

Hana’s face turned red and she let out a nervous laugh. She pointed towards the street with her chin, “Let’s go?”

The boy quickly took out his hands from his pockets and reached to hers. Hana began to panic as their fingers intertwined, hoping he wouldn’t tell just how sweaty she was. But he didn’t say anything about it their entire walk to the theatre. Instead, he began excitedly telling her about a song he was working on for their next album, and how the company was giving him a chance to showcase his skills. She listened intently, a fascinated smile gracing her lips.

It was the little things that just made her fall for him even more. He didn’t let her walk on the side of the road, his hand was still holding tightly onto her despite it probably feeling like a sea cucumber, and how he made sure the conversation wasn’t one sided. He would ask her questions, opinions, tell her anecdotes and ask her to tell him some of hers.

When they arrived at the theatre, there was some passive aggressive fighting over who would pay. Hana almost tackled him to the ground but he managed to pay for the movie tickets. Before he could go any further, she rushed past him to get the food, and even that ensued some mild arguing.

Hana walked with the bag of popcorn in her hands while Taehyung followed alongside, glancing from time to time at the short girl. They entered the theatre and it was already pitch black, but they still had some lighting as the commercials rolled by. Taehyung quickly walked in front of her, offering his hand to guide her in the darkness. When she suddenly tripped, his other hand grabbed her arm to offer support. She was glad it was dark, because her face had flushed completely.

He led her up to the back of the theatre, and Hana’s heart hitched in again. She wasn’t dense, she saw the movies and heard the stories. Being on a date and sitting at the back only meant one thing, and she suddenly forgot whether or not she had brushed her teeth.

They both sat down, and Taehyung was immediately leaning towards Hana, grabbing at the popcorn from time to time. She never heard of the movie they were watching, nor was she quite sure what it was about. She only hoped it wouldn’t be romantic.

Boy was she mistaken.

Since the beginning there were only steamy scenes, and she felt Taehyung constantly shift in his seat. She would look up at the ceiling when the people on screen would share an intimate kiss, and she would cough and look away when things would get… .

“I’m so sorry,” Taehyung whispered, “I didn’t know.”

She couldn’t help but laugh exactly when the entire theatre was silent. People around them began to wonder if they had entered the right theatre.

“It’s fine, the story isn’t so bad,” she said, grabbing a handful of popcorn.

“I swear, there’s no meaning behind this I wasn’t trying to-” Taehyung stopped speaking and slid down his seat in embarrassment. He knew at that moment that she wasn’t ever going to speak to him again.

But Hana was having the time of her life. The last thing she really wanted was a perfect first date. With Taehyung, things were different. She loved the absolutely harmless imperfections of his actions, and she was quite enjoying seeing him beyond flustered. Not like she was any different, but she was definitely getting a kick out of it.

The lights at the end of the movie, and Taehyung looked like his head was about to explode. The redness in his cheeks wouldn’t go away, and Hana started getting worried.

“Are you okay?” she asked as she put a hand to his forehead, then his cheek. Her gesture took him by surprise, and a wide shy smile appeared on his face. He leaned into her hand a little, and nodded before getting up and breaking their contact.

“It’s getting late,” she suddenly said, “Do you mind taking me back home?”

Taehyung’s heart sank to his stomach at her words. He had done screwed up and he couldn’t believe he was so careless with picking such a terrible movie to watch on the first date. He nodded silently and took the lead again, hesitating in taking her hand as they walked down the stairs.

The walk home was done in silence, and Hana wasn’t sure what had gotten into him. He was walking one step ahead, his eyes looking down on the pavement. Had she said something wrong? Did she eat too much of the popcorn and didn’t leave enough for him? Did she smell?

Before she knew it, they had arrived at the front door to her apartment building. Hana still lingered, and practically jumped up when he suddenly turned around with a distressed look on his face.

“I CAN MAKE IT UP TO YOU I PROMISE! PLEASE GIVE ME ANOTHER CHANCE!” He yelled.

Hana began to laugh again, taking his hand into hers. “Taehyung-ah, I had a wonderful time.”

“I swear I won’t- You what.”

“I can positively say that this was a wonderful evening,” she said, “ movie and all.”

Taehyung’s eyes lit up and he was about to lean in again until his morals got in the way and he ended up sniffing her again. Hana finally got the message as to what he was trying to do, and she felt a little giddy that he wouldn’t kiss her without her permission. He was proving to be gentleman-like, something she wasn’t at all expecting. At least not to that extent. It made her smile widely at him, inciting him to return the smile as well and proceed with an awkward laugh.

A breeze suddenly picked up, and out of nowhere it began freezing. It was unusual for a spring night, and Mother Nature had other plans for the pair. Hana began rubbing at her arms until Taehyung noticed, and opened up his arms for her. With a shy smile, she nuzzled herself into his chest while his arms wrapped around her body, keeping her close to him.

“Why don’t you come up till the weather stops acting crazy?” she asked.

All kinds of alarms went off in his head, and he thought they were moving too fast. Did the movie give her ideas? He wasn’t ready, nor was he equipped for anything. He was formulating an excuse when she suddenly said, “If you’re thinking I’m trying to show you my room with toys, you’ll be very disappointed.”

The boy roared with laughter, tears forming in his eyes. He agreed to follow her in the end, starting to feel the cold creep through his dress shirt.

Hana’s apartment was a small complex with only one bedroom and one bathroom. It was perfect for a student that didn’t have to live with her family, or had a newly started family. It was quite the contrast with the dorm Taehyung was used to.

But it wasn’t at all clean. Clothes were sprawled everywhere and he felt his face go red at the sight of undergarments hanging on the laundry rack to dry, dirty dishes in the sink and books and papers in every corner. It was the typical student accommodation.

She apologized for the mess as she wasn’t expecting anyone, and tried to make some space for them in the living room. Taehyung sat down on the couch, accidentally sitting on a stack of papers that seemed important. He began reading the content but soon found himself yawning, and he threw everything onto the coffee table that had way too many mugs with unfinished content.

Hana brought over some tea to warm them up, and quietly the TV. She wasn’t sure what to say to make things a little less awkward. Though they had known each other for a long time, it was the first time he had ever been at her house.

But Taehyung began talking again. It might’ve been a nervous ramble, but he was talking about anything that could possibly settle a normal and fun mood again. Hana followed along, genuinely laughing (a little too loud) at his jokes and also talking about random things. They weren’t at all paying attention to the show running on TV, only to the other person’s eyes.

Without realizing it, Taehyung was moving closer and closer. He took both of their mugs and placed them on the table, and began looking very nervous.

“Can I…?” he said, unable to get the courage to finish his sentence.

Hana nodded shyly, and closed her eyes. The back of Taehyung’s hand graced her cheek before moving down to the side of her neck. He shifted his position so that he was facing her, and began to lean in. Hana’s heart was beating like a snare drum, and she couldn’t even think straight. His other hand made it to her waist, holding her gently, while his nose ever so slightly brushed the side of hers. He was hesitating, afraid that he would do something wrong. But he wanted to kiss her so badly that it made his chest ache.

His lips brushed hers, and Hana’s heart skipped a few beats again. And suddenly, he carefully pressed his lips to hers. She draped her arms around his neck, and brought him closer to her. He was practically lying down on her while their lips moved in unison of small chaste kisses.

They took a moment to breathe, their eyes locked on each other’s lips.

“Taehyung-ah,” she whispered. Taehyung’s kisses grew hungrier and bolder, but remained as gentle as ever. She wasn’t able to get a word in as his lips refused to let her, and she couldn’t help but giggle. It made him smile like a child, and finally let her have a say as he pecked her cheek.

“Think we can go on another date some time?” she asked.

He lifted his head, gracing a devilish grin towards her. He nodded before dipping down to kiss her again, before accidentally rolling off the couch.
