Foreword
“Are you ready?” an old doctor asked the young man who looked to be 21 year of age sitting in front of him with bandages around his eyes. It’s been weeks since the surgery took place and this man has been waiting patiently to see if it was a success or a failure. Rather he is able to see or not will determine his future.
The young man dressed in a light blue patient uniform nodded his head a bit frightful of what will happen as the doctor leans forward and slowly removed the bandages carefully. As each layer of the bandages are removed, a bit of light could be reflected over the eyelid. Once the final layer is removed, the young man felt like the tightness and the heaviness he had felt for the last few weeks has been lifted.
“Okay…carefully and slowly open your eyes…but only when you are ready…don’t force it” the doctor spoke softly
The young man seems hesitant to open his eyes fearing that what he wanted might not happen. He didn’t want to face the disappointment but at the same time he knows that the only way to find out is if he opens his eyes. Having to live in a world of darkness for so long since his accident…it was kind of scary having to go back to live in a world full of colors and light. The young man clinched his uniform tightly before taking a deep breath. Slowly he started to open his eyes.
It was blurry and hazy at first giving him a bit of headache but it begins to become clear. However the bright light peeking through the window caused him to close his eyes once more.
“What’s wrong?” the doctor asked
“Light…the sunlight kind of hurts…”
The doctor had the nurse go and pulled the curtain to a close. The once brightly lit room is now in shadows.
“Alright…let’s try again…”
The young man hesitated once more but none the less he opens his eyes. This time it wasn’t blurry but it was crystal clear. Without the sunlight, he was able to see without feeling the pain.
“How…is it? Can you see?”
He didn’t say a word but only continue to stare at the doctor with his eyes open widely. Without any words or reaction, the doctor felt like the surgery has failed. The promise he made to allow this bright young man to see again was a failure. The doctor sigh before asking the nurse to give him the clip board she was holding.
“Look like we will have to try other method of treatment since the cornea transplant didn’t work…”
“No…” the young man spoke “no…it works…I could see…” his voice started to shake
The doctor paused as he lifted his gaze to look at the young man and notice bit of tears forming in his eyes. The silent stare wasn’t an indication that the surgery was a failure but the look of shock from seeing again. The doctor quickly handed the clipboard back to the nurse and turns his full attention to the young man
“How many fingers am I holding up?” he asked before holding up 3 fingers
“3…”
This was a satisfying answer as the doctor smiled widely “how about now?” he held up one figure
“1…”
The doctor smiled wider “what color is my shirt?”
“Blue…”
“What color is the nurse’s hair?”
“Brown…”
“What color is my hair?”
“You don’t have any…you are bold…” the young man spoke
A chuckle escaped the nurse’s mouth as the doctor look at her before turning his attention back to his patient and smiled “Welcome back to the world of light Jung Yunho…”
After spending a few days in the hospital from the surgery, the young man name Yunho sat on the bench outside waiting for his ride. Because his eyes have yet to adjust to the bright light, he wore his usual sunglass to protect them. His long brown hair that has grown while in hospital has been cut as he shaved himself for the first time in a long time giving him a clean look. A cool breeze blew pass as the smell of nearby bed of flowers enter his nose. In his hand is a piece of letter and a pink flower hair piece. He had read the letter over and over for the last 15 minutes. The expression on his face was that of sadness but at the same time it was something he had expected to happen.
“Yunho!” his friend called his name as he pulled the car to a stop at the front entrance where Yunho was sitting.
Another wind blew pass as Yunho gather his bag and walked over to the trash before tossing away the letter and hair piece. He left behind his past…let behind his struggle and heartache. With new eye his plan to start a new life and forget everything that had happens while he was living in a world of darkness.
“If you can see…why are you still wearing your sunglasses?” his friend asked as he pulled the car away from the curve
“I can see however my eyes have not adjusted to the sunlight yet…the doctor told me to take it slow…”
“In other words you will have to wear sunglasses for a few more days…”
Yunho nodded his head
“I see…well I’m glad the surgery went well…now I won’t have to do everything for you…” his friend grinned
“What? Do you hate being my slave that much?” Yunho return with a smirk
“Being a slave to a hot blind woman is more of my taste…”
Yunho only grinned at his friend who is known for his harem of women. Even though he is well known for being a player, it doesn’t stop women from flocking to his side when they have a chance. This could be because he is blessed with so much charm and handsomeness. This of course is what he always says when asked how he manages to get to many girls to fall for him.
“neh Yunho…about Eun Seo…”
“Don’t even mention her…it’s already over…”
His friend look at Yunho and notice the sadden expression on his face. To think that such a girl will have such a cruel heart. When Yunho was blind, she devoted her love to him saying how she will take care of him but after lifting up his spirit, she knocks it down with a single letter. To make it worst, she cheated on him with his best friend. They had an ongoing affair behind Yunho’s back saying things like he won’t be able to see them together.
“D-don’t worry about it…I know there are better woman out there…someone like her doesn’t deserve a great man like you…” his friend tried to cheer him up “I can introduce you to a better girl…”
Yunho only smiled slightly “thank you…”
The car stopped at the red light as Yunho kept his gaze out the window and noticed a bakery in front of him. The outside was painted in a light blue color with cute stickers on the window. The headboard was in white with pink lettering. People were lining up to enter the bakery; it even extended from the inside to the outside. He watched as people exited the shop with nothing but smiles on their faces. Each and every one of the customers looked happy to be able to get their hand on some of the baked goods. To be honest, this was making Yunho want to get in line and get some himself. Suddenly Yunho started to feel sharp pain in his eyes. An image flashed before him startling him. It was an image of someone’s back. From the look of it, it must have been a man with silky blonde hair. He could make out a visible tattoo on the upper back near the neck.
Yunho quickly removed the sun glassed before carefully messaging the corner of each eyes.
“Are you okay?” his friend asked upon noticing the painful expression on Yunho’s face
“Y-Yeah…I’m fine…”
“You don’t look fine…”
“Probably my eyes not getting used to seeing yet…but this is to be expected so don’t worry about it”
His friend didn’t ask any more questions as the street light turn green. He step on the gas pedal as the car started to move away from the bakery. It passed another young man dressed in a light grey sweater with the hood over his head but strains from blonde hair could be see poking out. Yunho and this young man ends up meeting eyes to eyes as the car drove away.
The young man stood in front of the bakery reminiscing the past. Rather than entering the shop, he turns around and walked away without a second glance.
