Chapter III.

Call.

This is the last one. I really hope you guys liked and if I let it pass any mistake, I’m really sorry.

“Do you have any plans for this weekend?” Nayoung asked soon as she entered in the apartment.

“I probably have an unwanted date to avoid.” she grumbled while giving the usual cup full of brandy to her friend. “Why?”

“My sister is going to sleep at her friend’s house…” she said while giving a wink to the other, implying that her sister was actually dating someone without telling her family, which was totally okay for her. “And I don’t want to stay at home. Let’s do something.”

Jieqiong shrugged, yet inside she was glad the older one invited her to do something. Even though she had no idea to where they were going in the next day; she believed was for the best that she think too much about it either.

Her friends from her hometown always asked her how she was holding up. The truth is that Jieqiong was never the type of person who spends that much of time alone, and because she was on a city where she didn’t know no one, her friends were worrying about her.

In almost three months, her friends noticed the changes on her personality. Looked like she did distanced herself from her parents and were calmer than how she was. They just didn’t know why she changed.

“Should I bring something?” Jieqiong asked as both of them were starting to get ready to leave.

“Beer.”

“Okay, just let’s go to the market, and then we can go.” the older nodded and followed the girl to the car from her company that she was using.

Holding the drinks, Jieqiong watched as Nayoung got behind the steering wheel and drove the car to an abandoned bridge near the city’s border. She stopped her car few meters behind the bridge.

“Has been ten years since this bridge was left behind because it didn’t manage to endure the weigh from the cars, so it was replaced for that weird road that connect both cities.” she pretty much explained why that place was a mess, with dirty all over the place and a few obscene drawings. “I liked to spend my mornings here in this couch, drinking beer and eating something harmful for my health.”

She showed the couch that was near the edge behind a small wall for the protection of those cars. The younger one seated down on the couch, being followed by the other.

“Did you brought this? Or it was already here?” she asked while opening her first beer of the day.

“After this place was abandoned, some people started to throw some old things here, one day I saw two man almost throwing this couch out of the bridge.” she said. “I asked for them to let this one here, and after I made myself clear that I didn’t wanted to have fun with them and kick one of them on the balls, they left.”

“You kicked his balls, and they still left the couch?” she smiled.

“They were going to throw away anyway.” she shrugged. “I guess I made they understand my point.”

From there both stayed quiet. It wasn’t a bad thing, that’s how Nayoung was, and Jieqiong was starting to be like this as well.

After a time, they started to talk about the place and how the green was starting to invade there. For about ten minutes that was the subject of the talk, that until Nayoung started to talk about how she thinks her sister is finally dating someone.

“Do you think she is capable of running away?” Kyulkyung asked after hearing everything the other had to say.

“I hope she is.” sigh. “Anywhere she goes is going to be better than that place.” she talked about her house.

“What you are going to do if she really run away?” Jieqiong looked at her expecting something she didn’t know what it was.

“I have no idea.” confessed to her friend that didn’t said anything.

They spend the rest of the afternoon there, drinking, talking a bit until the beautiful sunset showed up and only they had the privilege to see on that city full of buildings. It was a rare sight of the horizon.

That wasn’t the last time they spend some time there. The place became a spot for both, so they could talk and spend some quality time, usually in the weekends. And that wasn’t the only place where they’ve been.

Nayoung showed the city for Jieqiong under the judgmental eyes from the people who lived there. It was easy to see how they found strange that the weird looking girl of the city has a friend who looked normal. Some believed that Jieqiong made company to Nayoung out of pity, or because she didn’t know Nayoung enough.

“I’ve never asked, but do you have a job?” Jieqiong asked on one of these afternoons they spend on the bridge.

“At night, at a fast food chain that stays open 24h.” answered nonchalantly. “I start at 10pm and leave at 5am.”

“And how are you still breathing?” she gave a laugh. “When do you even sleep?”

“In the afternoon, now that my sister is never at home, I can sleep better, without worrying too much.” she explained and took a sip of her beer. “I take a nap after I get home after my job too.”

They didn’t even noticed, but time passed and not only from that afternoon, but also the days. They barely realized when Jieqiong made one year living in that city, and almost two years of their friendship.

That city’s residents stopped questioning Jieqiong state of mind, but the rumors of Nayoung still were there. Not like she cared anyway.

“This place a nicer than what I expected to be.” the smaller one commented as both made their way to the couch on that same bridge. She couldn’t stop thinking how they got really closer, how Nayoung was a nice person on her unconventional way, how the woman was really pretty and how those eyes always capture her attention.

“It really is a nice place.” the woman said throwing herself on the couch. She got a beer for her friend and then they stayed quiet for a few minutes until she started to speak again. “I’m starting to suspect my sister.”

“Why?” she asked without looking at the older.

“The idiot haven’t noticed, but her clothes are starting to disappear little by little.” she kept in silence for some seconds. “I think she’s going to try to run away and that this is going to happen soon.” Jieqiong thought about saying something, but preferred to keep quiet and waited for her continue. “And even though I’m worried how her future is going to be, I think it’s better for her to just go.”

“You prefer her far away, than inside that house.” she affirmed and older one nodded.

What Nayoung suspected actually happened. It wasn’t long ago from that day when she got home tired after her shift at that oily job and found an empty room that was supposed to be full of hers sister’s stuff.

It was like the younger girl had never existed. Actually, the only thing that could prove the girl’s existence was a small box that she found at her own bed.

Inside she found a letter explaining everything. Just like she was expecting, her sister couldn’t take their father’s , she ran away with her boyfriend and his family far away from there and she hoped they could see each other again, someday. There was also a picture, of the four sisters smiling brightly before their mother ran away and before their father became a head.

Nayoung smiled remembering how her family was apparently happy. Was everything fake? Did her mother actually loved her children at least for a second or she never even liked them? Or it was her father that was this kind of since forever and her mother leaving was just an excuse so he could finally show his truth self?

She would never know and maybe, she thought, it was better this way.

There are things that are better if we never know.

And on that day she didn’t manage to sleep, yet she didn’t talked to Jieqiong like she would always do.

On that day, she decided that was better if she spend some time alone.

Jieqiong didn’t even found weird the lack of contact by the other woman. That was something that happened a lot when she had a tough shift.

Nayoung did showed signs of life two days later with a simple text.

Thank you for hearing me talk about my problems, and even though everything haven’t gone as we planned, the purpose is still the same.

You are one of the most amazing person that I have ever met, Kyulkyung.”

At first Jieqiong didn’t understand about what that text meant, but she definitely didn’t have a good feeling about it either. She was agonizing more and more until the end of her shift; she had to endure half an hour and that was enough to make all of her sanity disappear.

As soon she left her job, she tried to call the woman, but of all off her tries, just one had an answer and it wasn’t Nayoung, but an angry man that she believed it was the head father.

Everything was making worse for her, and her despair was growing and tightening her heart more and more.

Jieqiong parked her car at the first calm street she found and tried to think something to do about all this, certainly ignoring this wasn’t an option, so she needed to go after Nayoung, she needed to find the older woman. The only problem was that she had absolutely no idea of where she is.

She couldn’t remember where the girl lived and neither was the time of her shift. So, by then she only had one option and god she hopped this was the right one.

The woman turned her car on and ran was fast as she could by law. In fifteen minutes, she made it to their meeting point.

Right after her parked her car close from the bridge, she left the car seeing nothing more than dirty and that old couch. Wishing her feelings and thoughts were wrong she ran to the little wall and looked down, seeing the weak river running in the middle of stones.

Down there, together with the stones, she saw one female body so she ran again, scolding herself for wishing it were somebody else.

In despair, she turned the person body and saw the face of the woman whom had gotten into her heart for the last few months. She had no idea why, but now she was sure of what she was feeling for the older one, she was pained to find that way.

When she tried to check the older woman’s breathing, she heard a small groan. She didn’t even felt the wet on her knees because of the river. With Nayoung’s head on her tights all she could feel was relief washing all of her body when she saw that the woman was alive.

Minutes passed as Kyulkyung waited for some kind of reaction from the older one.

“I guess the bridge isn’t high enough.” she made the comment and regretted seconds later when she saw on Jieqiong’s face how mad and pissed off she was. That was when she realized that it was better if she stayed quiet for her and for Jieqiong’s temper.

For the first time in all of her life, Nayoung was scared.

They didn’t spoke on their way to the doctor that the younger one insisted to take her just to be sure everything was alright. She finally felt better when the doctor said that all that Nayoung has was a few scratches and some harmless injuries.

Nayoung kept quiet after they left the hospital, even when she finally realized that they were going to Jieqiong’s house.

“I’m going to set the bathtub for you clean yourself while I search some clothes for you.” Jieqiong said while helping the woman into her house.

She put the woman in the toilet while she prepared the older a bath. After that she helped the older to take the clothes off and to get into the bathtub.

Nayoung enjoyed the best she could. While the warm water was making her body feel relaxed, she could hear the woman walking from one side to other inside the house.

After some minutes, Kyulkyung came back with clean clothes on her hands. Still without talking, she helped the woman to clean herself while her face started to get red making the other believe that her face were changing colors because she was still mad.

“Maybe I didn’t wanted to die that much.” she said after a time making the younger look at her. She thought that maybe if they talked about it, things wouldn’t be this weird between the two of them.

“What do you mean?” after Nayoung heard the question she gave some thoughts about it and faced the other, noticing that she didn’t looked that mad anymore.

“I’ve jumped off a bridge that wasn’t even high enough to break my leg, if I really wanted, I guess I would find a more effective way.” she explained and saw the woman nod as she was understanding, yet without continuing what she was doing.

Even without having sure if it was okay to do this, she gently held the woman’s face before looking straight into her eyes and speaking.

“Don’t worry me like that anymore, I beg you.” she whispered and brought her face closer to Nayoung, giving a light kiss on her lips before getting up and leaving the bathroom.

After that night they talked about their future and about what they were going to do.

Nayoung didn’t want to go back to her house and to live with her father, Kyulkyung didn’t want to take her eyes of Nayoung, she didn’t want to let her go so she could do that again.

With that – after Nayoung insisted a few times about not being a nice person to live with – Jieqiong convinced the other to come and live with her. Both also started some weird relationship that apparently worked for them, so they definitely didn’t care that much about it.

I’m not going to say that after all that drama everything went great for them, it’s normal to have problems on the way. Nayoung wasn’t exactly the type of person that people wanted as a girlfriend – or as any other thing – yet Jieqiong was used to this, in fact she kind liked.

After some months Jieqiong had to move again because of the company that opened another filial, but this time in the neighboring country. Nayoung decided to go with her and left behind all of her problems she once had. There she would finish college, look for a better job so she could help Jieqiong with the bills, she was going to look for a psychologist – maybe she could try fix some things on herself – and she was going to try to make Jieqiong really happy, especially now that she practically owed her life to the younger one.
