Chapter I.

Call.

I cut the fanfic in three parts, and this is the first one. I'm not sure if the translation is correct, again english is not my first language, so I'm sorry if you find any mistakes. I hope you guys like this chapter and the whole fanfic. Thanks for reading it :)

PS. I forgot to say, but there's going to be a few curse words, so if you're uncomfortable with that, at least you know now.

It was almost three in the morning when the cellphone started to make noise. The girl who was asleep thought about turn the alarm clock off and go back to sleep without caring about what she was supposed to do.

That if it was the alarm clock.

Someone was calling her before 3am and that was not a good sign. You know what they say about everything that happens after 2am couldn’t be good stuff.

If she had to be the most positive about it, it was some head trying to make a prank on her, if she had to be negative about it, her brother crashed his car again while drunk driving after some party and died before he could make it to E.R.

Anyway, it was better to be sure that everything was fine before going back to sleep.

Not fully awake, she started to research for her phone that was still making sound. She saw the unknown number on the screen and even with the light blinding her, she managed to answer the call.

“Hello?” the voice on the other side was pretty much just a whisper and because she had just woken up, she didn’t realize how broken the person was.

“Who is this?” she asked hoping that the person understood her.

“Jinah?” the same voice asked few seconds later. By this moment, the girl was awakened enough to see that the person who she was talking to wasn’t feeling good.

“No.” murmured feeling a bit sad for letting the stranger down. “Sorry” she had spoken again.

“Hm…” the stranger voice was so low, that the girl was in doubt if heard something. Both of them stayed quiet. On one side, the girl was waiting the voice to speak again, in the other side there was nothing but silence, until the stranger hung up.

Of course she did not understood what just happened, yet she was so tired that she just went back to sleep.

In the next day, after wakening up, she found two messages on her cellphone from two different number. The first one was from her mother.

Jieqiong, your brother crashed his car four in the morning, come pay a visit to him in the hospital. Kisses, I love you.”

Sigh. She knew that nothing goes right after 2 am.

Leaving her brother aside, she opened the other text. This one was from an unknown number, the same one that called her on dawn, and it had just one word.

Sorry.”

That’s it.

She came to conclusion that it was because the stranger had hung up without saying anything, but she wasn’t going to worry about it either, besides she didn’t even know if was a woman or a man. She decided that it was better to not answer the text and move on with her life.

“Did I had something to do today?” she asked herself. When Jieqiong remembered that she had the whole day free, she smiled.

That until she also remembered that she needed to visit her faced brother. But then again, her family didn’t need to know that she woke up at that time, so she just pretended that there was no text from her mother and went back to sleep. That was one of the good parts in living alone.

The black haired girl finally woken up in the afternoon and when her cellphone started to ring again, without checking who was calling, she answered the call and murmured something so the person on the other side start the conversation.

“Did I just called the wrong number again?” it was a woman, Jieqiong was sure of that.

“I think so.” she waited the voice on the other side to say something, but just like the first time, the person stayed quiet. “Hey, don’t you have anything to say?”

I don’t think so.” this time the woman seemed calmer. At least.

“Have you managed to speak with who you wanted to?” oh, she wanted to flush herself down the toilet after she made the question. Why she was making a conversation with someone she knew nothing about?

No.” Jieqiong waited the stranger without knowing if she was going to say anything else. “She probably got tired of me.”

“Who is she?”

My sister.” she was starting to ask herself if this stranger never elaborate more the answers.

“And who are you?” Jieqiong asked again after they spend more time in silence.

“A loser.” suddenly her voice was low, just like the first time. “Someone who pretends to be someone and something I’m not. Someone that when looks in the mirror, sees the reflection of pure garbage.”

“Why do you think like that?” she was trying to understand what this woman wanted. What was wrong with her?

Because that’s what I’m.” replied with a calm and low tone. “Just a loser.”

“That’s not something nice to think about yourself.” this time there wasn’t an answer, just a noise made by the other woman’s tongue, as if she didn’t care.

And you…” the stranger started. “Who are you?”

“I don’t know.” Jieqiong didn’t know how to answer this one. “I mean, I think I’m just busy to find out who am I.”

Hm…” and like the first call, the silence came back. There was no reason for them to stay there, with the call still on, yet they did, maybe waiting something to happen.

When Ji               eqiong finally remembered that she had to visit her brother, the call was finished. Again, without a single word from the stranger. The girl was confused; she was asking herself what was that.

And before leaving the house, she received another text.

Sorry, and thank you.”

She left wondering if she should save the stranger’s number.

Making a favor for her parents, she accepted to spend the rest of the day and the night with her brother so they could go back home, take a bath and rest, before coming back.

And for a moment, she started to believe that this was the worst decision of her life. She was alone, on a hospital, bored and with no decent place to sleep.

She could send a text to her friends, or even demand that Eunwoo make company for her, but she knew that this could go wrong and in the end she would have to survive her best friend wrath.

In the middle of the night, still awaken, she played a few songs on her headphones while she made a stroll by the hospital, seeing even a few bodies being rushed to the E.R.

She ended on the rooftop of the hospital, still bored. And there was where she received another text.

Can you talk?”

Yes, why?” after sending the message she waited for the answer. But instead, she got a call.

I need to talk to someone.” the woman’s calm voice got into Jieqiong ears.

“And why I am the chosen one?” she was really curious.

I had realized that because you don’t know me, it’s going to be easier for any of us disappear someday.” she explained.

“Can I, at least, know your name?” Jieqiong asked. “I believe it won’t hurt you.”

There was the silence again.

Nayoung.” after a few minutes she heard the hesitant voice. “And you?”

“Jieqiong.” she said. “Or Kyulkyung, whatever you prefer.”

Hm, Jieqiong.” it was as if she was trying to feel how Jieqiong’s name would roll of .

“What do you want to talk about?” she straight to the point. Maybe she could talk about a few things as well. “I have lots of time, apparently.”

I don’t know” it was really weird to talk with this woman. “I’m my family’s black sheep and I feel that’s the only that’s left for me”

“How can you be so sure of this?” Jieqiong wasn’t trying to prove something, she really wanted to know this.

My father hates me because he thinks my mother left us because I was a burden for the family.” Nayoung seemed like she was used to this seeing how naturally she talked about it. ”What he doesn’t know is that she ran away with our neighbor of twelve years younger than her that she was ing with every weekend while he was playing soccer with his friends.”

“And he doesn’t know this.” she guessed.

Nope, and it’s better if stays that way.” a sigh. “Our family has suicidal tendencies.”

The silence came again. Jieqiong didn’t know if Nayoung was intending to go on.

“You seem unhappy.” she said trying to keep going with the talk.

I tried to smile more once, but no one recognizes me.” it wasn’t an explanation, but it will do. ”So I stopped looking for people’s approval, stopped looking up to the sky, stopped believing in beautiful love stories…”

“Maybe you read awful love stories.” for the first time she heard something different on the other side. There was a small laugh.

Maybe my life wasn’t made to be positive.” said back, being quiet right after. Both of them stayed like this until Nayoung finally spoke again. “And you?”

“What about me?” Jieqiong was startled.

Don’t you have anything to say?” Nayoung didn’t seem to want to hang up.

“I feel that my family don’t give a flying for me, that even though they always treated my right, they never seemed to care.” she said all at once. “What any middle child think it happens.”

I see.” she murmured.

“There’s also the fact that my mother is extremely religious and my closet is almost exploding with me trying to come out.” she laughed even without thinking it was a funny thing. “While my brother can do everything the church it’s against and condemns, and she doesn’t say anything.”

Gay?”

Really gay” a sigh. “And I even have to take care of him after all the he does.”

And what is the excuse they use?”

How do you know that there’s an excuse?”

“I’m also a middle child.” ten seconds. ”Maybe a more ed up than you, but still.”

“He makes the and I’m the only one with age and time to stay with him.”

“I thought you said you were too busy.”

“Not for my parents, certainly.”

“I see.” she said again and then, one more minute passed. “Bye, Jieqiong.”

Nayoung didn’t wait for Jieqiong answer. Maybe she needed to get used to this peculiar way of the other girl.

Before going back to her brothers’ room, she saved the woman’s number as “Nayoung?”

In the end, she managed to sleep in the worst way possible… Actually, the only way possible, and she couldn’t wait to go back to her own house.

The house her parents gave to get rid of her, or what she thinks it’s the reason. After all, if her brother say he wants to leave their parents’ house it is like saying the apocalypse is happening. However, to Jieqiong, there was no problem.

Maybe she should have get used to this already.

In the next day she found out she was fired from the job she had just so she could say she was doing something else than just studying. The reason? She had lost the day again because the head of her brother and her boss was tired of this.

Yet she didn’t care that much. She wasn’t going to starve. She knew her mother was going to do everything so people don’t think they didn’t take care of their children.

Jieqiong used her free day to read and to use her computer while she listened some long list of her favorites OSTs. And by the end of the night, almost down, her phone rang again. When she saw who it was, she thought that she could use this to talk about things that was burdening her.

“Guess who was fired today?” she asked as soon she accepted the call.

“Probably someone who doesn’t seem to care about it.” she heard the serene voice.

“Someone who’s still going to survive.” a sigh.

“Lucky you.” the other woman didn’t seem to believe on that.

“Looks like, yeah…” she stayed quiet for a few seconds. “At least I live alone.”

“Now, that’s luck.” sigh. “I live with three people that keep yelling all day.”

“And you stay there because…”

“Because it’s in the garbage that trash like me belongs to.” this Nayoung certainly had a low self-esteem.

“Looks like you need a chance to get yourself together more than anything.”

The silence came back and after a few minutes, the line went mute. She definitely need to get used to this.

With these small chats that both of them kept living. Most of the time, Nayoung talked about random things. And Jieqiong talked about what her mother have made her been through, like a date with a disgusting man just because he was from the same church as her.

The good thing about this relationship it’s that none of them tried to say what the other should do, no advices were given. Sometime they made a comment or two, but that was it. They had no idea of how it was for the other to try to give advices like that.

While Jieqiong was living a hell with the stupid ideas from her mother, Nayoung didn’t even had a mother, instead she had an idiotic man as a father that had a reciprocal hate with her.

Both lives were different; both were some kind of hell. It wasn’t a competition to see who had it worse, and even if it was, that wouldn’t make any changes in their lives.

Months been through with them talking at least three times a week before going to sleep. At least five minutes each conversation.

Anyhow, there wasn’t many revelations about their lives to each other. They didn’t know where the other was living – even though Jieqiong believed that Nayoung lived on South thanks to her accent – they didn’t know the other last name, they didn’t know anything that it wasn’t part of their problems.

And Jieqiong eventually started to work again, where the boss was a bit more acceptable about her brother’s problems.

So, what you guys think? If there's something confusing, please tell me so I could explain and fix the problem. Well, see you guys in the next update, I promise it won't take long.

And I know the end is a bit weird, but it’s because I didn’t know where to cut this chapter.
