Coffee & Roses

Hansol never understood how he dealt with waking up at six every day of the week for high school because now he gets to wake up at nine and he feels like he could die from exhaustion. All he wanted to do was stay in his warm sheets and fluffy pillow, he almost did, but then he remembers Seungkwan. They made it a ritual to get coffee together before class, it’s always better to suffer with someone else than by yourself, and he couldn’t leave him there by himself. Not only would the guilt eat away at him but he did not want to deal with a pissed off, but secretly sad, Seungkwan later on. So, he forced himself out of the comfort of his bed and got ready to meet his best friend at their very cliché college cafe.

The morning sky was only filled with grey and everyone around campus practically looked like zombies as they walked to their destination, Hansol doubted he looked any different. At this point he would have been fine with sleeping on the many benches he walked by but, of course, a certain boy popped into his head and he made sure to keep walking. Hansol thought maybe if Seungkwan hadn’t gone to the same college as him then he surely would have been his bed right now and most likely skipping his first class. But no matter how good sleeping sounded having Seungkwan there was much better. Even if neither of them admitted it they have only been holding themselves up  throughout the school year because they had each other. But there was always an unspoken understanding of how the other felt. Plus, Hansol doubted he would do this for everyone else. Seungkwan is his best friend, of course.

His eyes caught a glimpse of red among the dull colors of exhausted college students and the brick walls. A man outside the coffee shop held a bunch of roses while attempting to get the people who walked by to get the one he held out to them. Suddenly his pace quickened as he felt the metaphorical light bulb go off in his head. “Hello.” He bowed to the older gentleman, putting on a smile. His eyes scanned the roses before meeting the man’s face. “How much are they?” Hansol saw the male’s mouth form an ‘o’ at the question and taking a look at flowers. He made a humming sound before answering, “It’s free,” with a smile. Hansol took two but he didn’t leave without giving the man some money, even if they refused at first. He finally walked into the cafe with the bell above the door ringing. He looked over at the booth in the back, seeing Seungkwan there as usual. He walked over and slid into the booth. It took a few seconds until he finally caught the attention of the other boy, his gaze leaving his phone and meeting Hansol’s soft brown eyes. “I hope you know I was five seconds away from leaving.” Seungkwan almost asked what took him so long but he felt it was only redundant and settled on a better question instead. “Why are you smiling so much?” Hansol was supposed to looked dead just like he did, like they both usually did. Hansol didn’t say anything but pulled out the two roses and held them out for Seungkwan to take.

Although he was met with furrowed eyebrows and an inquisitive look his smile didn’t falter. Seungkwan took the roses, carefully touching the soft petals, and tried to keep a smile from forming on his face. “The guy outside trick you into buying these?” He asked as he looked up at Hansol. “No.” A small frown was beginning to form on Hansol’s lips. He really hoped for a different reaction. “I got them for you because I know mornings stink and I wanted to make it better for you without needing caffeine. It’d be nice to see you smile before ten am. "Despite Seungkwan rolling his eyes he couldn’t stop the corners of his lips from turning upwards at the gesture. "When did you become so cheesy?” Hansol couldn’t help but chuckle as a smile appeared on his face once again. If he could make Seungkwan smile that way all the time then he would, with no hesitation, because that smile put those roses to shame. Sengkwan was his best friend and it made his heart lurch that he could get him to smile like that.

“You do know I’m not going to give up coffee, right?”

“Of course, I do, Seungkwan.”
