The Fated String

The morning on that one particular day was extremely unpleasant. Yerin was already lacking sleep from doing her freelance work until 4 AM, accounting the fact she got sidetracked by cute pictures of kittens on Tumblr. She dreamed well of Tonkatsu that night. But on that particular morning, everything was booming and crashing and much louder tha usual.   “What is that noise?” She asked as she walked out of her room in her pyjamas. She exchanged looks with her fellow roommates who had also walked out of their room after the disturbance.   “Is it our new neighbor?” Maerin yawned, speaking the words almost incoherently.   “Oh yeah, we got new neighbors moving in,” Seul Yi remembered, her brains were exceptionally well when she was sleepy.   “Ugh… If our new neighbor is hot, I’ll forgive the intrusion,” Yerin mumbled to herself like a grumpy old lady.   “You wouldn’t. Chan Yeol is hot but you never forgave him for playing his guitar loudly in the hallway one morning.” Hyun Mi laughed, before quickly correcting herself. “Hot in your perspective, that is. To me, no one beats Woo Hyun of course.”   Seul Yi and Yerin rolled their eyes simultaneously, knowing that fact without her having to repeat it for the one billionth time. They secretly blamed Maerin’s positive and happy reactions for her which indirectly prompted Hyun Mi to keep professing her affections for her boyfriend.   “It was Saturday morning and he could’ve played in his own room. I don’t see why he had to play in the hallway… Out loud!” Yerin defended her reasonings for being mad at that stupid giant. Her eyes stared at the clock, seeing it was barely even 8 in the morning.   “Let me go talk to them.” Seul Yi noted the annoyance and decided to take matters in her own hand. She opened the door and came face to face with Myung Soo who was peeking his head out from the guy’s apartment at the same time.   “Hey you,” he greeted her with such a warm smile.   Seul Yi pressed her lips together in an attempt to stop grinning from ear to ear, but she lost to herself at his adorable visual. Was he even aware he hadn’t combed his hair yet? Did he realize the first three buttons of his pyjamas were ed? How did he manage to look so adorable as his eyes nearly disappeared behind his morning smile? She giggled at her own observations.   “Why are you up so early?” Myung Soo properly walked out of their apartment, greeting his girlfriend with a small peck against her forehead.   “We heard noises,” Seul Yi answered.   “Noises?” He raised an eyebrow.   “Not that kind of noises,” she quickly corrected her erted boyfriend with a soft slap and a giggle. “We think it’s the new neighbors.”   And at the right cue, three girls appeared from the stairs, carrying large boxes in their hands that hindered their view.   “Ah, hello! You must be our new neighbors!” The girl wearing a cute red ribbon over her head spoke.   Myung Soo and Seul Yi gave them a confused look, carefully watching as she tried to balance the box on her leg in an attempt to reach her hand out for a self introduction.   “My name is Song Hee-Jin.”   There was a new source of noise as they heard loud footsteps and things falling over from the girls’ apartment, followed by Hyun Mi loudly yelling “Did you say Song Hee-Jin?!”   Who would’ve guessed how small the world truly was? As it turned out, Song Hee-Jin was Hyun Mi’s cousin whom she hasn’t seen for a long time. The two were separated before either of them hit puberty, and now fate had brought them together.   Everyone was gathered in the girls’ apartment, including the original tenants, the guys from across the room, and also the new tenants who turned out to be 100% female, to Yerin and seul Yi’s disappointment.   “I can’t believe you’re really here.” Hyun Mi had an awestruck look on her face, feeling her cousin giving her a tight hug. She then turned to her other friends and proudly said, “Hee-Jin is my favorite cousin.”   It made Hee-Jin blush a little at the sudden introduction. And the next thing she knew was the guy who had been sitting so close to Hyun Mi suddenly standing up to offer her a handshake.   “The name’s Nam Woo Hyun, and I am your cousin-in-law,” he introduced himself with a rather cheeky smile.   “In-law?” Hyun Mi scoffed at his introduction. “We’re not married, you know.”   “We will eventually, so Hee-Jin might start getting used to the in-law status as a head start,” Woo Hyun told her, getting back to his seat as he placed an arm around his girl who laughed at his words.   “Aw, I’m happy to call you my cousin-in-law. As long as you make Hyun Mi happy, I won’t have any problems with that,” Hee-Jin spoke, earning a laugh from the rest.   Everyone soon introduced themselves to each other, and in no time, they behaved like long lost best friends who had a lot of catching up to do. Along came Lee Bi Ah and Seol Hana, fellow newcomers who would live next door with Hee-Jin. Hee-Jin herself was very sweet, quite easy to get along with, and would occasionally start rambling on non-stop about the things she was passionate about.   “I really wanted to bake brownies for everyone as a thank-you-for-accepting-us-to-the-neighborhood kind of gift, but I didn’t have time to. Hey, maybe I could still do it after we finish unpacking! But the house is still filled in dust then, I don’t think the brownies will be edible. Sorry, I’m rambling too much…”   “You can use our kitchen,” Chan Yeol suggested an idea, laughing at the way her eyes widened in glee.   “Really?” Hee-Jin’s eyes seemed to sparkle with interest.   “Yeah, the only person who ever cooks is Woo Hyun anyway,” Tae Min said and began coughing at his own words, a little loud and dramatic.   “He says he cooks, but we all know he bought it from the supermarket and placed it on the frying pan before anyone gets home,” Myung Soo gave away the valuable secret.   “Hey! Wa- wait! That’s not true!” Woo Hyun stuttered, quickly giving a glance to Hyun Mi who frowned at the revelation.   “I’ve seen him cook,” she spoke up in his defense. “And it taste really good, like restaurant quality kind of food~”   “Maybe it is take-out food from an actual restaurant,” Seul Yi suggested, to which Myung Soo laughed at.   Hyun Mi shook her head and turned to her boyfriend who was staring at her with an adorable pout everyone probably wanted to punch him for. But she calmly patted his head. “I trust you. I’ll eat whatever you’ll cook for me,” she said.   “You’re one lucky girl. Other people have to pay for such good and high quality food as my cooking,” he exaggerated, loving the way she laughed at his joke so lovingly.   The others were already rolling their eyes at this point. Literally everyone knew of Woo Hyun’s tricks, and the only person who would still fall for it was Hyun Mi. That was why everyone agreed they were the perfect match for each other.   “We wouldn’t eat it even for free,” Seul Yi commented quietly and Myung Soo soon burst out in laughter again.   “He could be serving you dog poo and you probably would still say it tastes good,” Maerin commented to Hyun Mi, and they all cackled for it was true. A little of an extreme example, but she made a point.   “Everything he makes tastes good,” Hyun Mi said, unaffected by their teasing.   “Cause everything I make for you is made with love~” Woo Hyun threw in about 10 sets of hearts as he spoke to which she playfully mimicked.   “What…?” Even Hee-Jin was surprised at the sight in front of her, followed by Bi Ah who found it cute, and Hana who got embarrassed just listening to it. It was Chan Yeol’s loud coughing that brought them back to reality.   “But seriously, you can come use our kitchen if you can’t wait to cook brownies,” Chan Yeol repeated the offer when the noise had died down. “And if you need a tester, I volunteer.”   Yerin rolled her eyes at his seemingly overly friendly act. A tester? He was probably just going to ruin the brownies and end up eating everything himself. If there was anything successful enough to be eaten, of course.   “I would look for another tester if I were you,” she warned the new girl.   “Huh? Why?” Hee-Jin asked so innocently, so unaware of the giant’s stupidity. Poor girl.   “Chan Yeol won’t be of great help. He can’t even differentiate burned cookies from chocolate chip cookies.” Yerin recalled another moment from the time he was helping her when she decided to bake cookies once every blue moon.   “Hey! I knew those were burnt! I just kept eating it so you wouldn’t feel disappointed,” Chan Yeol told her sternly.   “Yeah right. I never asked you to go ahead and eat something that could possibly lead to cancer,” Yerin said.   “Why would helping you lead to cancer?” Chan Yeol asked like the idiot he was.   Yerin rolled her eyes in frustration. “I read an article about it. Eating those black spots of burnt food activates what could become cancer cells, not the act of helping me. Gosh…”   “Are they always like this?” Bi Ah asked with a friendly smile, finding the entire bickering cute.   “Yeah, which is why they are a match made in heaven~” Maerin confirmed with a laugh.   “And Chan Yeol is her favorite person to unleash all her anger on,” Tae Min continued, soon chuckling in his own little world with Maerin; both always subtly trying to get the two together.   “I hope they’re soulmates,” Maerin continued dreamily.   “That’s adorable,” Hana was in awe as the others all agreed with her, except for the two people involved.   Yerin could only roll her eyes. She thought she had gotten used to all their teasing and matchmaking attempts, but apparently it still bothered her to a frustrating level. Either that, or she was just really really sleepy and missing her comfy bed right now.     The new neighbors clicked really well with them, and their gang of eight had suddenly become a group of thirteen with the addition of Hee-Jin, Bi Ah and her boyfriend Hoya, and Hana with her crush Ji Soo. The apartment seemed so much smaller now when it tried to fit so many people together.   “Come here, Katsu.”   Yerin was trying to lure the white Japanese bobtail cat into coming to the apartment with her. She wanted to kidnap the cat and keep it as her own. She tried once, but it scared the hell out of Seul Yi who hysterically shrieked as if she was being robbed. Yerin remembered the way Myung Soo nearly kicked their apartment door down, holding a baseball bat in his hand, only to find out the source of his girlfriend’s scream was a mere kitty. She hadn’t tried to kidnap Tonkatsu into the apartment again ever since.   Usually she was with Chan Yeol whenever they fed Tonkatsu together. She’d watch him foolishly “meow” to the cat, but Tonkatsu found the can of cat food more interesting. He was her partner in crime when they tried to kidnap Tonkatsu, but he wasn’t of much help since he couldn’t even touch the cat. After Seul Yi’s incident, they both agreed to adopt Tonkatsu but let it live on the streets. It was perhaps the only time she went along with his stupidity.   “That stupid giant doesn’t even know you’re a girl.”   Yerin squatted down next to the cat she had nicknamed Katsu. She watched the cat cleanly the last remaining food of the can she had bought. And when Tonkatsu was done, she strolled away like the happy-go-lucky cat she was; zero worries in her life.   She’ll try another cat-napping attempt some other day. For now she just wanted to rest and hang out with the people she loved. But her apartment was unusually quiet that hour, and she remembered the others still had classes. So she decided to cross to the other side, knowing Chan Yeol had no schedule around this hour.   “Come in!” She heard his voice after she knocked on the door three times. Yup, he was home for sure, but his schedule wasn’t as free as she thought it would be.   “Oh, hi Yerin!” Hee-Jin greeted with a wide, dough smudged grin on her face.   Yerin scrunched her eyebrows, watching Hee-Jin and Chan Yeol in the kitchen wearing matching red-checkered aprons. There were flour all over the counter and on their wooden floor, along with dark chocolate smudges that beautifully decorated the places the flour had missed. Her vision was seemingly slightly blurred, but no, it was the puffy smoke from the flour being thrown around.   “Did the gingerbread man die or something?” Yerin questioned, unsurely stepping her way to the living room couch, resembling the epic voyage of a traveller stepping on small pebbles to avoid hot lava.   “No.” Hee-Jin giggled as she shared a secretive exchange with Chan Yeol. “The baking didn’t go as well as planned.”   “I didn’t know there were different type of flours. They’re all the same to me,” Chan Yeol defended himself as soon as he saw that judgemental look on Yerin’s face.   They went over this before and he forgot. Stupid giant.   “I didn’t know the wrong flour could make the chocolate explode inside the oven~” Hee-Jin described the pretty gruesome scene in such a lighthearted manner as they began to laugh at it again.   Yerin stood up, eyeing the oven that was indeed all covered in dark chocolate splatters. She now noticed numerous egg shells lying on the counter and spread all over the trash cans.   “How many eggs did you guys use?” She then questioned, concerned about the calories contained in the dish.   “Oh, we actually used up all of our eggs,” Hee-Jin answered a little apologetically.   “So we borrowed some from you guys,” Chan Yeol continued with a guiltless grin. “Don’t worry, we can always go on our weekly grocery shopping trip. I think we’re scheduled for this week.”   “That’s not the-” Yerin was about to get mad at him and his carelessness, but was interrupted by Hee-Jin’s excitement.   “Oh~ Do you guys have chore schedules? So fun! Can I come along when you guys go grocery shopping?” Hee-Jin asked; her eyes probably sparkling as she talked with so much passion about grocery shopping.   “Yes! You should definitely tag along. I think you can ask your cousin to change the schedule line up. She’s the one who made up an entire schedule anyway,” Chan Yeol said.   “Ah she hasn’t changed. She’ll probably also kill us if she saw this mess,” Hee-Jin laughed, giving Chan Yeol an apologetic look. “I made a mess out of your place. Sorry.”   “Don’t worry. It was fun! We should do it again sometime!”   Hee-Jin gave him a small playful push, glad he wasn’t angry at all. “What do you mean do it again sometime? We’re not even done right now,” she reminded him. She returned to the bowl of mixture in front of her and continued stirring it manually.   “Right! I forgot!” Chan Yeol soon handed her some of the ingredients she needed without her asking to, displaying a perfect telepathy among them. After so many failed attempts, he had already memorized the entire recipe.   “And when we’re done, I’ll promise to clean everything up.” Hee-Jin said as she whisked the batter in the bowl. She mixed it with too much strength, resulting in splatters of the mixture hitting her face and Chan Yeol’s who leaned in closer to take a look. After he felt a smudge on him, he began to laugh.   “You should clean yourself first.” He then laughed, poking her cheek so casually to indicate the places that were hit by the dough. The girl laughed in embarrassment, but soon continued mixing again.   “I’m just gonna go back.” Yerin awkwardly cleared , seeing the two too busy among themselves to acknowledge her presence.   “You don’t wanna help?” Chan Yeol asked her with a very dumbfounded expression, as if her participation to help them was the most logical response from her. He had flour smudged over his face, and it was the one thing that kept her from lashing something back at him. He looked like a giant baby.   “I’m tired,” she simply said, not in the mood to go down their usual bickering routine. At least not in front of the new girl. She had to keep her image as the eldest and wisest unnie.   “Get some rest, you’ve been sleeping past 4 AM for the past few days,” Chan Yeol casually spoke before he returned to help Hee-Jin out.   Y

Chapter 2: Your characters are so well developed! I love it. You really make me so drawn towards Chanyeol and Yerin. Normally I cant read OC fics because I can't put a face to them but I love Yerin. T.T shes so precious.

A but shocked that you and Woohyun arent soulmate but it makes coz you're married to the love of your life haha. =) I wonder if Chanyeol knows Yerin is his soulmate? He comes across as stupid but there are moments that show he's so wise and mature. I wont be surprised.
