Enchanted

“You know, just because he’s a jerk doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t go to prom anymore. If anything that just holds you back even more, you know?”

You sighed. You hated it when your friend was right. But you just wanted to feel right for this one time, was that too much to ask?

“I don’t know. I’m just not feeling it.” Truth be told, you just wanted to go home and curl up in bed and mope around sadly. Maybe buying some ice cream before you get home. Yeah, that seemed like a perfect plan. “I get to be sad sometimes, don’t I?”

“Oh shut up.” Your friend rolls her eyes.

You scoff at her blunt attitude. “Such a great friend, you are.”

“You know what I mean. You already bought an amazing dress, and prom is this weekend. Don’t let that idiot ruin everything you spent months planning for.”

You sighed again. She was definitely right this time. “I hate you.” You say, a bit of a smile peaking on your face.

“You love me.” She smirks. “Come on, let’s go get some ice cream. My treat.” She gets up from the table, wasting no time as she yanks you up. You laugh at her abruptness as the two of you make your way out of the library.

You’re applying the last layer of mascara when you hear the doorbell ring. So they’re here, you say to yourself.

You can’t help but feel excited as you walk downstairs to the front door. You open it hastily to find four of your friends greeting you ecstatically.

“Holy crap, you look amazing!” Your friends gasp. “You know, if Soonyoung wasn’t my date, I would take you to prom in a heartbeat.”

“Same here. Except Seungkwan is being a bit of a diva right now so I just might actually ditch him for you instead.” Another friend jokes, and you laugh from all of the compliments.

“Thanks guys. We should get going though. Don’t want to be late to prom!” You say, as you make your way outside.

You enter the limo and see the Soonyoung, Seungkwan, Mingyu, and Joshua just casually lounging around inside. “Hey, guys.” You greet, a big smile on your face.

“Woah, you look good!” You hear someone say, probably Mingyu, before you laughed again, rolling your eyes.

“You guys really know how to make a girl feel special. Thank you.”

“Hey, would you be my date? This one is a little feisty…” Seungkwan gestures to his date, before getting slapped in the chest.

“Too late, I already called dibs on her first.” She rolls her eyes at Seungkwan playfully.

“Hey. No calling dibs on me. I am a human being, not an object!” You laugh.

Soon enough, the limo starts moving again to the fancy five-star hotel the prom was being hosted at.

You talk to each other for the most part of the ride, but then you soon begin to feel awkward as the conversations begin to die down. You look around and see that your friends are chatting quietly with their dates now, and your heart drops a little when you realize you don’t have anyone to talk to. I mean, you could have joined in on their private conversations, but you didn’t want to ruin the moment or whatever.

It was going to be a long ride.

The ride felt like an hour long, due to the fact that you were bored out of your mind for most of the time, just staring out of the limo windows and enjoying the night scenery. But you had to admit, riding a limo in itself was a great experience.

You followed your friends from behind as you guys entered the hotel. You took your time entering and almost got trapped in the revolving door if not for your sharp reflexes. But you couldn’t help it; the prom decorations were absolutely beautiful. The theme this year was an “enchanted forest”, and you had to give props to the prom committee for doing so well. Everything was glowing with lights, and it made you feel giddy inside.

You quickly caught up with your group of your friends, a little out of breath from walking in your heels so fast. Soon, you enter the huge ballroom, and you immediately felt the bass of the music pumping through your body from how loud the music was.

You started to laugh when you saw Soonyoung dragging your friend to the middle of the ballroom dance floor, showing off his impressive dance skills. Your friend on the other hand was pretty embarrassed from now being the center of attention with him.

You wander off from your group of friends for a while, wanting to greet some of your classmates you saw earlier while entering the ballroom.

You smile when they all complimented the way you looked tonight, even though you just thought they were being polite. You give your thanks and all complimented them as well. You knew all the work these girls put into tonight; after all, you were one of them too.

You excused yourself as you tried to find your friends again, but was a little disappointed to find them dancing with their dates, respectively.

Oh. I guess I shouldn’t interfere, then, you sighed. After all, tonight wasn’t all about you, anyways. It isn’t their fault that you don’t have a date anymore. You should just let them be happy. Don’t let them feel bad, you tell yourself.

To take your mind off of things, you make your way to the snack table, and help yourself to some punch. Actually, you didn’t know what it was. It was clear and it was carbonated, but you just really needed something to drink. You make your way to a vacant ballroom table, sitting down carefully as to not spill anything on your dress.

You look around again in awe to see all of the decorations, clearly impressed with the amount of effort it took. It was almost like you were in a fairytale.

You bring your drink to your lips when you spot a certain someone; a very familiar certain someone, dancing with another girl.

Suddenly you didn’t feel so thirsty anymore.

“So you break up with me just to take another girl to prom?” You say to yourself bitterly. “So much for ‘focusing on school’, jerk.”

You turn away so he doesn’t notice you staring at him, but it doesn’t make you feel any better. In fact, you feel your heart drop the more you think about it. You didn’t even expect him to be here. He broke up with you a little over a week ago; does that mean he was already planning on taking her instead?

You look over at him and the girl again. You quickly noticed that his bowtie and her dress were the exact same colors. You grimaced. Planning outfits usually take a long time to organize. He basically cheated on you and you just now realized the fact.

You couldn’t even focus anymore, and looked away again, trying to blink back tears. You grabbed your drink and grimaced when it tasted like a weird, syrup-sweet concoction. You secretly wished it was vodka as you drank it down, despite not even drinking a sip of alcohol before.

At this point, you contemplated on just leaving. Your friends were having a lot of fun without you – not that you have anything against them, it was true – but you would rather just go home now. You checked the time on your phone, and saw that you had only been here for thirty minutes.

You didn’t feel confident anymore. In fact, you thought you looked ridiculous right now, sitting here all alone while everyone is having the time of their lives on the dance floor.

You were about to google a phone number to a cab company when you hear a deep voice from behind you.

“And who is this here, sitting all alone?”

You turn around, startled. You smile a bit when you recognize the owner of the voice. “Hey, Wonwoo. What are you doing here?”

You watch him as he takes a seat next to you. “More importantly, why are you here by yourself?” He turns his head slightly in confusion. “Where’s your boyfriend?”

You scoff. “I don’t have a boyfriend… Not anymore at least. He dumped me last week for seemingly no reason.” You gesture over to the dance floor, and he follows your line of sight. “But now I know why.”

He sighs in disappointment. “I’m sorry to hear that.”

You smile, feeling a little better already. “You don’t have to feel sorry about anything. I don’t even have feelings for him anymore.” And you felt surprised that you could say that without guilt. Maybe you were moving on already.

“So what about you? Where is your date?” You ask, quickly changing the subject so the focus wasn’t on you.

He grins, and you liked the way he smiled. It suited him nicely. “Actually, I’m here by myself, too.”

You were taken aback. “Really? The Jeon Wonwoo didn’t ask anyone to prom?” You exclaimed, teasing him a little. “Actually, no girl asked you to be their date? I’d imagine girls would line up to ask you.”

He blushes, but thankfully you didn’t notice, due to the dim lighting in the ballroom. “Hmm… Actually, no one was interesting enough to take.”

You watch him stand up from his seat, and your heart flutters a bit as he extends a hand out towards you. “Come on, let’s go.”

You were visibly confused, causing him to laugh at your cute expression. “Go where?”

“To the dance floor. You know, to dance.” He teases. “That’s what kids do here anyway, right?”

You were a little embarrassed, but shook it off nonetheless. “Dance?”

“That is, if you want to. Come on, it won’t be fun if you just sit here by yourself all night.” He gestures his hand out again, and you hesitantly take it. He smiles in return, and gently leads you to the dance floor.

As if right on cue, the fast-paced, upbeat song everyone was energetically dancing to turned soft and slow, and you almost panicked at the fact.

“Alright, we’re gonna take it slow, now. This song is for the beautiful couples out on the dance floor.” The DJ on the stage announced.

You blushed at the thought that you and Wonwoo would be slow-dancing together, and it would be implied that you two were a couple.

“Do you know how to slow dance?” He asks, facing towards you.

“Uh, not really. I actually never had the chance.” You admit shyly. “But I think I get the generally idea of it.”

“Well, I’ll teach you then. It’s pretty easy. Here, just follow my lead.” He talks softly, almost afraid of raising his voice since there was gentle music playing in the background.

You nod your head, and smile softly. “Sounds good to me.”

He carefully wraps your hands around his neck. “Well first, we need to get closer to each other,” He explains. You nod again, letting him continue. He wraps his hands around your waist, your heart fluttering at the touch.

“And again, just follow my lead.” He almost whispers, as if he was setting the mood. He takes a step backward, you take a step forward, easily getting the hang of it.

“I never knew you were quite the dancer.” You joked. You feel less nervous than before when he grins again.

“There’s a lot to learn about me, actually.” He quips.

“Oh really? Like what?” You ask playfully.

Wonwoo thinks for a while. “I like to say what’s on my mind.”

You laugh. “Is that supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing?”

“It all depends really. I like honesty.”

“And what is on your mind, Wonwoo?” You ask, anticipating his answer with curiosity.

“You.”

You furrow your eyebrows together in confusion. “Me?”

“More specifically, how beautiful you look tonight.” He says gently, and you don’t know how to react. All night you’ve received endless amounts of compliments on your hair, makeup, and dress, and even your manicure! And you just brushed it off with no problem.

But now, you felt like you were blushing furiously at his compliment.

“I don’t know what to say. Thank you.” You genuinely say, with a big smile on your face. “You look very handsome yourself. It’s a pity that you didn’t have a date.”

He chuckles, and it triggers the butterflies in your stomach. “If I didn’t have a date, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to be dancing with you right now.”

You couldn’t wipe the grin off your face. “You sure know your way with words. Since when did you learn how to sweet talk a girl?”

“I didn’t learn. Like I said, I like to say things that are on my mind.” You feel his hands grip you firmer as he gets closer to you. On instinct, you wrap your arms around his neck closer, and you notice a small tinge of pink on his cheeks.

“Well, what else is on your mind?”

The two of you were extremely close, your bodies just millimeters from touching.

Wonwoo was about to speak, when the DJ abruptly began to play party music. You slowly removed your arms around him, placing them awkwardly at your side.

You were a bit disappointed; your heart was racing from the close proximity and you were anticipating what his next words were going to be.

Wonwoo noticed your change in mood. You were all smiley and shy one moment, and upset in the next.

“Come on, I heard that the photobooth was pretty cool.” He smiles, trying to cheer you up again. Instead of leading you by the hand though, he kept one arm around your waist and led you to the corner where the photobooth was placed. Outside the table were a number of props to wear, and you laughed at the sheer amount of ridiculous items on the table. You laughed as you grabbed the iconic pair of glasses with a huge nose and bushy eyebrows attached, wanting to put them on. Instead, you put them on Wonwoo, laughing at how hilarious he looked.

He rolled his eyes sarcastically. “Very funny.”

Wonwoo looked over at the prop table and tried to scan for the weirdest prop, but settled on a huge pair of chunky sunglasses, the frames shaped into hearts. He gently placed the glasses on your face, and smiled. “Adorable.”

You couldn’t help but feel a bit shy at that statement. You didn’t really know what to do, so you grabbed his hand and went inside the photobooth.

There was barely any room for the two of you to sit down comfortable in the photobooth, much to your amusement. “Couldn’t they have thought this through a bit more?” You laugh.

Without a word, Wonwoo places you on his lap, much to your surprise. “Better?” He smiles, teasingly, almost if he knew what he was doing.

“Hm, I guess this will just have to do.” You sigh dramatically.

All of a sudden, the camera shutter flash goes off, surprising you. You both weren’t even looking at the camera!

Before you knew it, the camera was counting down again, and you smile cheesily with your huge sunglasses, laughing at the screen as you saw Wonwoo’s face as he wore his strange glasses.

“I don’t want to keep wearing these if you’re just going to keep laughing at me.” He pretends to pout, quickly taking them off. You agree and take your pair of sunglasses off, too.

“What pose should we do next?” You ask, watching the photobooth screen count down again. You turn to him when he didn’t answer, but had an uneasy feeling in your gut when you saw the devious smirk on his face. Before you had time to react, he tickled you, and you yelped as the camera flash went off again.

“Not fair!” You laugh out loud, trying to get out of his grip, but failing. “That picture is probably ugly.”

Your attempts to resist his tickling were futile, but he stopped coincidentally when you accidentally got too close, your face just inches apart from his. You were panting from lack of breath, and your heart skipped a beat when you realized he was looking straight into your eyes. You couldn’t help but look down at his lips, and wondered if –

The last camera flash went off, breaking you out of your trance. You felt awfully embarrassed all of a sudden. Your heart was now racing. You couldn’t believe it. You were about to kiss him. You were about to kiss Wonwoo.

“Come on, let’s go get our pictures.” His low voice breaks you out of your thoughts. You quickly jump off of his lap, and walk outside the booth, and waited for your pictures to print out.

You laugh at low ridiculous the two of you looked, and especially the one picture where he tickled you; but when you saw the last picture, it made your heart race again. It definitely looked like the two of you were centimeters away from kissing.

“I think we look good together.” Wonwoo nudges you. “Especially in those dumb glasses.”

He let you keep the photos in your clutch for safe-keeping, and soon he led you back to the table you sat at before.

“So where are your friends?” He asks, starting up another conversation.

“Oh, they’ve been on the dance floor since we got here. I’m sure they forgot about me.” You joke. This time, you didn’t feel as sad as before.

“Me too. I don’t know how they have all of this energy. It’s been hours.” He laughs.

You were about to reply how “lazy” he was when you felt a tap on your shoulder. Curious, you looked around and froze when you saw the absolute last person you wanted to see.

Wonwoo noticed how tense you immediately got and cursed under his breath. Of course this jerk had to ruin everything.

“Hello. You look very hot tonight, darling.” Your ex-boyfriend said, but none of those words had any effect on you. They were almost demeaning, really.

“Excuse me?” You almost snarled, offended by the audacity he had in him. “I’m not your darling. I’m not anything to you. Go back to the other girl you’ve been fooling around with.”

“Oh come on. Let’s talk for a bit.” He says, a bit annoyed, and he reaches to grab you by the arm. Before he could touch you though, Wonwoo stands up and pulls you back by the waist almost protectively, just out of reach.

“I believe she asked you to leave her alone.” Wonwoo says firmly, glaring at the other boy. “But if you aren’t going to leave, then we will.”

Without another word, Wonwoo guides you out of the area, as you were too upset to do anything else.

Soon you both stop walking once you reach the balcony area, and it’s much quieter without the loud music, and you were pretty sure the balcony area was restricted since you didn’t see anybody else around.

“Sorry about that.” You mutter apologetically. “That must have been awkward.”

You lighten up a little when you hear Wonwoo chuckling. “I wouldn’t want anybody to hurt you. You don’t need to apologize.”

You let the emotions get to the best of you; not because you were upset about your ex-boyfriends trying to confront you, but how much Wonwoo cared for you. He spent all night worrying about your well-being when he didn’t even have to talk to you.

You hugged him without a second thought. He was surprised at first, but he patted your back gently as a way to comfort you.

“Thank you. For everything.” You mutter into his chest, tears beginning to well up in your eyes.

He held you for a while, enjoying your embrace. He let go as soon as he heard you sniffing, though.

“Oh, don’t cry.” He whispers sympathetically. “This isn’t anything to cry about. Don’t cry over me.”

Softly, he reaches toward your face to wipe the tears that were threatening to fall.

“Sorry. It’s been a long week.” You laugh, wiping the remaining tears.

You looked at him, and you felt happy. You felt happy and nervous and shy.

The way he was looking at you was making your heart race; something your heart tends to do a lot recently.

You were leaning in before you knew it, and he closed the distance.

It was a soft, hesitant kiss at first, and he pulled away quickly, embarrassed. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…”

You kissed him again before he could sputter any more words out, your lips reconnecting with his. His lips were softer and fuller than you had expected, his kisses soft and delicate, slow, short pecks becoming longer and longer with each one. You felt his arms wrap around your waist, this time closing any distance between your bodies. You instinctively raise your hands to his broad shoulders, your fingertips playing with a couple strands of his hair.

You felt a cool breeze run through your body, and shivered. Wonwoo gave one last peck before detaching completely. You watched as he quickly stripped off his blazer and did not hesitate as he wrapped it around your body.

“Better?” He smiles shyly, almost as if those kisses never happened.

“Much better.” You grin, before reaching up to kiss him again.

Maybe prom wasn’t so bad after all.
