Between Love and Romance

Between Love and Romance
chapter five: between love and romance

"Jae-" Jooyeon pushed Myungsoo off her and frantically ran out the door.

Thankfully, he didn't go too far. Jooyeon found him leaning against the wall outside her dressing room. In his hands were another bouquet of roses. He plucked off petals slowly until he noticed Jooyeon watching him.

"Hey," he greeted with a quiet voice.

Jooyeon took steps forward and stood in front of him. "Jae, look I don't know what that was. I don't know why he did that. I don't know what is going on between me and him and I don't know what's going on between you and me either."

"I like you a lot, Jooyeon. We've known each other for what- a month? But I came to like you within that month. You're brilliantly beautiful. The words you say and your every action has me going crazy. I've never met anyone that makes me feel the way you do. I don't know what's going on between us either. I do know that I want to be with you."

"I also like you a lot. I just don't know how I feel about Myungsoo. We have a long," she paused for a second, thinking of the pained memories, "long history."

"I'm not going to ask you to tell me about it. If you feel comfortable with it you can though."

Jooyeon heard footsteps behind her and turned to see Myungsoo. "Let's get out of here first."

She grabbed Jae's wrist and lead him out the back door. Millions of thoughts flooded through her head. She couldn't tell which one of them she wanted to be with. Jae being cooperative soothed her. The two made their way to Jooyeon's apartment where they sat down next to each other on her bed.

Although the situation was serious, she couldn't help but flush red at the thought of her being on the same bed as Jae. She gently bit down on her bottom lip as she tried putting words together in her head.

"When I was in my third year of high school, Myungsoo asked me if I wanted to have this sort of friends with benefits kind of thing with him," she started.

Jae looked at her with a surprised expression, "Wait, you guys did it-"

"No, no, no, nothing like that," Jooyeon quickly shook her head, "We just cuddled and stuff like that."

"You guys cuddled," he repeated, slightly jealous, "and what else?"

Jooyeon's eyes glanced around the room, wondering if she should say it or not, "He was also my first kiss."

"What the ," Jae suddenly cursed in English, "You guys didn't even like each other and just kissed as if it was nothing? It was you first kiss, too. My god, I should've moved to Korea sooner."

Jooyeon smiled hearing his words, "That's the thing. I liked him but he didn't like me. Then he ended it when he realized I liked him. I was heartbroken."

"And now he comes back all casual and kisses you? God dammit, Myungsoo, what are you doing?" Jae began to raise his voice.

"It was my fault, too. I knew my feelings would get in the way, but i went for it anyways. I can't just blame him, you know? Plus, I don't regret having a thing with him. Through him I learned how to love."

"You taught me that."

The words didn't register in her head until moments later, "What?"

"In these few months you taught me how to love, how to care for another, how to put another before myself," he replied with a small smile.

The look Jae gave her melted her heart. Every part of her ached. She could feel her being drawn more towards Jae, but she couldn't just go to him right away.

"I-"

"I'm going to go now. You must be having a lot of thoughts right now. Me being here with you might make you biased towards me. I want you to choose me in the end, but not because I made your heart flutter in the moment. I'm sorry if my words shook you."

Jooyeon just stared at him as he left her room. She couldn't believe a guy like him existed. Someone who considered her feelings rather than speaking rashly. Jae never got mad at her for being indecisive. He never forced her to make a decision right away. He gave her what she needed. Time.

--

The next day came and Joohyun went over to Jooyeon's place to help her sort out her feelings. Jooyeon rested her head on her best friend's shoulder and heaved a heavy sigh. Without words Joohyun was able to comprehend Jooyeon's thoughts.

"Maybe you should ditch both of them and spend the rest of your life with me and we can raise cats!" Joohyun attempted joking to brighten Jooyeon's mood.

As expected, her face lit up, "That actually doesn't sound too bad right now."

Joohyun chuckled and affectionately Jooyeon's hair, "You know, you deserve to be happy."

"What do you mean?"

"What I'm saying is that you shouldn't choose Myungsoo because of your past with him or push him away to prevent risking your friendship. You shouldn't choose Jae because he treats you well or push him away because you don't think you deserve him. Because you do. You deserve to choose whoever you want even if that is Song Joongki."

"Once again, you've succeeded in reading my thoughts. How did you know I didn't think I deserved Jae?"

"You've been holding back. And you never hold back," Jooyeon wrinkled her brows, "You're Kim Jooyeon. You what you want and know how to get it. Except when it comes to guys but this time he actually likes you too."

Jooyeon couldn't help but laugh at the end of everyone of Joohyun's sentences, "Thank you, Hyun. It means a lot to me that you're always here when I have any kind of problems."

"It's nothing. You'd do the same for me."

Jooyeon's arms wrapped around Joohyun before she changed positions to lay in her lap.

"Tell me about them," Joohyun said randomly.

"Them?"

"Tell me about things they do, how they make you feel, what you think about them."

"Oh. Well," Joohyun thought for a second, "Jae. He makes me feel like I'm loved. He does and says things that makes me laugh and want to be around him. When I see him, I get excited and all fluttery. He's in a band and surrounded by fangirls that love him and it bothers me. He looks at me when he talks and always says my name. When we sit next to each other, he always moves closer to me and I can feel the comforting warmth of his body. He makes me feel like it's my first time loving someone."

Joohyun nodded as the other spoke.

"Then there's Myungsoo. Myungsoo and I have known each other for years. In those years we've been close, we've been distant, but he's always been there for me. Even after the thing that happened between us, Myungsoo never left my side. He feels like home and makes me feel safe. He's like a blanket. We always fight, but it's only because we care about each other. Other than you, there's no one who knows me better than Myungsoo does. He brings me sadness when I think about the past, but he brings me hope when I think about the future. He gives off a bittersweet feeling, you know? I love him, but I don't want to love him."

After Jooyeon spoke. Joohyun already knew who she would choose. After all the years the two spend together, Joohyun could tell which guy is truly in Jooyeon's heart.
