Chapter 9

The Progress of Love

When Joongki arrived in her apartment that morning and typed in the pass code she had shared, she barely woke up. It was seven o'clock and she wished to stay longer in bed. But, his sudden appearance messed her plan up.

"Why are you here so early? We won't be departing until 10 though," she whined.

Joongki slipped inside the bed and joined her under the blanket.

"Why are you asking? Of course it's because I still miss you. I start filming again tomorrow."

Chaewon rolled over on her side, snuggling readily into his waiting arms.

"Ya, aren't you going to wake up? It's your boyfriend's scarce day off though."

She was feigning ignorance. Instead of answering, she moved closer and brought her hands to circle his waist. He was entrapped inside her embrace.

"Hmmm, you're really warm," she mumbled, her voice was muffled by the fabric of his sweatshirt. "Oppa, can't you come everyday and take in place the role of my thermal blanket?"

A deep chuckling sound came out of him.

"Seriously!" He exclaimed, finding himself irritated at her avoidance but unable to be angry. "My price is high though," he continued, hugging her back now.

"How much?" She asked, sounded a bit slurring.

Joongki lifted his head to take a look at her closely. She was struggling to keep her eyes opened. A smile spread across his lips.

"About...a vow in the altar?"

The warmth his body emitted had made her felt really comfortable to drift back to the dream land. Her brain was able to catch the words he was saying, but had given up on her effort to respond.

"Sleepy," her words sounded more like a delirium than anything.

She fell back into unconsciousness with a smile on her face.

"Eyy, woman, when I just casually somewhat propose to you."

He left a kissed on her forehead, not that he was really complaining though.

.

"Wait, aren't we going to Kwangsoo Oppa's?" Chaewon asked as she watched Joongki turning the car to the left lane.

"Isn't his apartment on that direction?" She added further and pointed her finger to the opposite direction.

He tried so hard to keep his focus on the road ahead of them as he registered the words she just said. His forehead wrinkled and the end of his mouth was pulled to the side, indicating that he was not happy.

"How do you know?"

His question came out as accusing and Chaewon recognized the tone he was using.

"Are you going to get jealous over it too?" she gave him a side eye, "relax there, can you, a bundle of jealous ball?"

The small grunt that followed made her rolled her eyes. Here we go again, she thought.

"You didn't even know my address but you know Kwangsoo's. It's just as if I don't know yours but I know Moon Geunyong's address."

"That could happen," she retorted back, "if you befriended Geunyoung before me, that could happen, and there would be no problem with that."

Seriously, Joongki and his ridiculous jealousy strike at random things would drive her mad one of these days.

On the driver seat, he clucked his tongue upset, mouth pouting an inch forward. Chaewon and her too logical way of thinking weren't doing him any help sometimes. Let him asked the men passing by in the street of this country, ninety percent of them wouldn't be really pleased when their girlfriend knew better about their best friend than the boyfriend themselves.

Even though people said that jealousy was sometimes needed in a relationship as it signified the other side's feelings for you, but if it happened too often, it could get tiring. There were times when she enjoyed watching that side of him, but when he got hyped over this kind of petty things, she couldn't help but called him unreasonable. But, at the same time, she didn't want them to fight over it. She knew the better, she must tame it before it got too far.

"When I asked for his time to meet me, because I wanted to ask him about you at that time," She put an emphasis on the latest part, "we met on the small café near his place that you guys frequent."

Joongki cleared his throat awkwardly upon hearing her explanation. He felt like shrinking smaller and smaller in his place.

Chaewon smirked sheepishly to herself. He must be embarrassed by now, realizing at how childish he had been acting.

"If you've told me beforehand, I won't-I won't-" he stuttered.

She reached out to him with her right hand, giving a gentle squeeze on his arm.

"That's why next time you can ask me first, with a cool head," she said.

Joongki let out a defeated breath. Again, today, she beat him in just one strike.

"I know. I'm sorry," he said, turning to look at her.

She answered him with a knowing smile plastered on her face, "glad that we come in terms for that. Now, tell me where are we going?"

"Taehyun hyung-nim's place, they changed the location."

.

When they almost reached the villa complex, Chaewon had been nagging in his ears for the rest of the ride.

"Oppa, you are really too much this time. How could you didn't say anything to me?"

She wouldn't be that upset if not for the fact that the house they were going to visit was a household with three little kids. The thing she knew was they were supposed to visit Kwangsoo new apartment, so she only bought two big package of toilet paper in suit of the culture when visiting someone who just moved in.

"You should have told me earlier, at least I could buy cake or some food for the kids, even if we don't get them gifts."

"Calm down, it's okay, you can do it next time. It's not like this is gonna be the last time you'll see them, you'll see them often from now on. Besides, look at Suchan, Taehyun Hyung-nim is worried enough already that he would get any rounder than he is now."

She groaned, "This is not the right time for some jokes."

For most of people, the solution to her problem was simple. They just needed to drop by a bakery or kids' store and bought whatever they wanted. But it was a different case for them. She, Moon Chaewon, couldn't be seen stopping by any store with Song Joongki. It would get all over the internet in a few seconds.

In that moment of frustration, a thought popped up inside her head.

"Oppa, pull over there," she instructed hurriedly, snatching her clutch from the dashboard.

They were in a big road not too far from the villa, in a weekday, at an office hour. There weren't many people around there, just a few passersby walking in rush.

"What?"

"Hurry up."

He didn't get what she was trying to do, but still, he turned the wheel and stopped by the sideway.

"Chaewon-ah,"

She opened the door and stepped out of the car even before he could finish his question. Grabbing her clutch tightly, she spoke to him, "Oppa, you go first and text me the address. I'll be there soon."

"Chae-"

"Oh, and wait for me in the parking ground," she added before shutting the door closed. From the rear mirror, he saw her taking a taxi, and soon the vehicle sped past his car. She was off to somewhere he didn't know.

"Ya! At least tell me where you're going!" he yelled, though it was too little too late for her to answer.

.

She appeared on the villa's parking ground around half an hour later with her hat pulled until it covered almost half of her head. The sharp look he gave her was ignored as she lifted both her hands that were full with a box of cake and a paper bag.

"You really are something, how could you just leave alone without a word like that?" he complained, but she showed him the ultimate weapon that one hundred percent guaranteed a victory, that would sooth his anger no matter what. A sheepish and innocent grin and her delightful giggle.

"Sorry."

There was nothing he could do other than sighing.

"Let's just go upstairs."

He took the stuff from her hands and walked before her, leading the way. After they entered the elevator, she hooked her hand on his arm carefully.

"Are you angry? I'm sorry," her plead came out sweetly.

Joongki turned his head to take a good look at her face. Her round eyes stared back at him as he examined her.

"Don't do that again next time," he finally concluded.

She smiled like a child and nodded a little bit too hard. The stiff muscles on his jaw relaxed as she tightened her hold on his arm.

He put his chin on the top of her head, mumbling, "Seriously, what should I do about you."

As they approached the unit where Cha Taehyun's lived, he noticed at how wary she had grown. She was always nervous about meeting people for the first time, more so because she was meeting his close acquaintances. Joongki managed to squeeze her hand despite all the stuff he was carrying.

"Take a deep breath," he whispered, "you'll be doing fine."

Kwangsoo opened the door for them after Joongki pressed the bell. That overly tall friend of him stared at him from head to toe as if it was their first time meeting each other.

"What are you looking at you punk?"

From behind the door, a head peeked out and Kwangsoo's lips expanded into a big grin.

"Wow, you really come. Hurry up get inside, Chaewon-ah, it's been a while."

"Yes, Oppa, it's been a while."

Joongki let her walked over the doorway first and he soon followed behind.

She was hesitant in her step but Kwangsoo ushered her to keep moving forward.

"Everyone has been waiting," he told them.

She glanced over her shoulder and the signal made Joongki catch up to her faster.

"Here they come!" Kwangsoo announced loudly.

At the least, five pairs of eyes welcomed her as she entered the living room. For a few passing seconds, everyone just stared at her in silence, though they were smiling and their facial expressions were friendly.

Chaewon gulped down her non-existent saliva, was dry.

"Why did everyone get so quiet suddenly?" The owner of the house broke the silence, "come, come inside, Chaewon-ssi, right?"

"Yes, sunbae-nim, how do you do?"

She felt Joongki's hand on her back as she bowed respectfully to the plump man in his forties. His curly hair was sticking out untidily.

"Eyy, what are you doing? It's not like we are in a formal meeting. Just act comfortably," again, Cha Taehyun spoke to her in his bright tone that she only ever heard through the television screen.

Joongki walked forward to hug Taehyun lightly and greeted his wife. He handed them the stuff Chaewon had bought.

"What is it?"

The lady didn’t have much height difference from her husband. Her black hair lied right below her shoulders, and it was tied neatly.

"Chaewon wants to give it to the kids," Joongki explained.

The middle aged lady chuckled pleasantly.

"Aigoo, you don't have to though,” she said, still, she accepted it gratefully. “Thank you so much, Chaewon-ssi."

"Y-yes."

She stopped, realizing she was yet to know how to address Taehyun's wife.

"Right, everyone," Joongki suddenly talked with a loud voice, bringing the attention to them. "I officially introduce you, my girlfriend, Moon Chaewon."

The smug that was so obvious in his tone made her felt like digging a hole on the ground to hide or to escape somewhere. It was embarrassing, what did he mean officially introducing? It was not like they were some kind of important people.

But, Joongki, being too proud and had been wanting to brag for a while, went on to present each of the people there.

"You know everyone, right?" He asked, but didn't wait for her to answer. "Insung Hyung, then skip this tall one, Joohwan Hyung, and this is Joohwan Hyung's girlfriend, Hyunjoo-ssi."

Even so, Chaewon took off the hat she wore, and bowed again.

"Hello, everyone, I'm Moon Chaewon."

Joongki dragged her to the kitchen after that, getting her acquainted with Taehyun and his wife, Choi Suk Eun.

"Song Joongki just wanted to annoy us. That is why he brought you here, Chaewon-ssi!"

Someone shouted from the livingroom. She turned at him, and met his raising eyebrows.

"Well, it's not my fault that you have no girlfriend, Hyung!"

That earned him a slap on the arm, probably for the hundredth times after they started dating.

"Oppa, why are you being like this? Childishly," she told him in a hushed voice.

"I get it, I get it, I'm sorry."

Behind them, Cha Taehyun burst laughing out loud.

.

The house was lovely. There was no extravagant furniture adorning the place. It was neat, the result of Choi Suk Eun’s personal care. Here and there, Chaewon could see the trace of children, from the family portraits in every corner of the house, or the messy drawing and imprint of crayon on the wall, and the cute gifts and placard the children had made themselves for their parents. In conclusion, the house was glowing with a happy family vibe.

"Talking about it, you two are seriously amazing. How did you manage to do romance while working on a melodrama?"

They had finished lunch and were enjoying fruit as dessert. Choi Seuk Eun personally served them the dishes she had cooked herself. Chaewon heard people talking about it before, and that day she got the chance to taste it. Cha Taehyun's wife was really a great cook.

"It's not like that, Sunbae-nim," she waved her hand.

Kwangsoo joined in to give her a help.

"It's more like Joongki trying to work on romance between them, but Chaewon gave him a melodrama."

She had lost count on how many times that big senior of her cracked himself with laughter that day. He laughed a lot! When her fellow Good Doctor co-star was still casted in 2 Days 1 Night, she happened to watch it a few times. At that time, she thought it was just his television persona, but he was much the same in real life.

"Look, look at her."

Everyone was interrupted from the fun they where having and turned to focus on her as Joongki had instructed them.

She immediately snapped from her train of thought as she felt all the eyes on her.

"Why?" Her soft voice rang out carefully, "What's wrong?"

"You're staring at hyung-nim with an amused look," he answered.

"Did I?" Her round eyes opened wider. Her cheeks went red from the realization, and the embarrassment.

"I'm sorry, it's because it’s my first time seeing everyone in person. It feels like watching celebrities.”

Once again, Cha Taehyun laughed his head off.

“You’re quite a strange kid,” he talked in the middle of his remaining laughter, “you yourself are celebrity too, you talked as if you’re not.”

Her head ducked lower, she smiled shyly.

“I stay at home most of the time; I don’t have much celebrity friends, so it sometimes feels amusing when I really meet them. Especially, everyone here is the people I only used to see on screen.”

Joongki looked around and couldn’t help but to feel proud as he witnessed his friends were looking at her with a warm smile.

“Ah, I watched everyone’s drama well. Joohwan Oppa’s performance in Oh My Ghostess gave me goose bumps. How did your facial expression changed so contrastingly like that?”

Insung snorted at her sincere curious eyes.

“This guy here is that kind of guy for real,” the gorgeous man who mostly stayed quiet for the entire hour, finally opened his mouth to start another teasing parade. “He is either super friendly or super wicked.”

There must be some inside jokes that she, and the rest of the women, didn’t understand because all the five men laughed again.

“Right, Joohwang hyung is gonna play in writer Lee Kyunghee’s new drama,” Joongki told her.

“I heard about it. It’s a pre-produce one too, right? Pre-producing a drama is the trend lately, I guess. From what I know, there was at least two other dramas that are being shoot right now but will be aired next year.”

“Yes, I was also informed about it. One of it is director Kim Kyutae’s production, a historical drama,” Insung chimed in.

Cha Taehyun took a deep breath in. As someone who had been in the industry for more than half of his life and now was leading an agency, those kind of conversation always felt heavy.

“I hope the working condition will be better this way. You know Joo Won, right? That kid is shooting a drama right now, and I read it from the news, he has been staying up for days without sleep. How does he manage to do that, I really don’t know. Maybe because he is still young, but it will get to him later when he is older.”

“I know right.”

Everyone in the room fell into a deep contemplation. The mood had changed serious. It couldn’t be helped though, they could relate to each other’s concern.

“How do you two date?” Hyunjoo spoke up, in her attempt to switch the topic and brightened up the atmosphere again. “Chaewon-ssi? Joongki Oppa?”

They shared a look, and ended up smiling.

“We don’t get to go out much,” Chaewon answered, “it hasn’t been that long for us, and he is busy filming, so,” she wrinkled her nose, uncertain because there was not much to tell.

“How about you two?” she asked back, “how long have you been together?”

It was Hyunjoo’s turn to smile.

“Almost two years,” the woman said.

“Whoa, how do you manage to keep away from the media for so long?”

“Well, I guess the media just don’t have any interest in Joohwan Oppa. We’ve been having dates freely, we went to watch movies and eat together, just like any other couple, though not as often as non-celebrity does.”

Maybe because Hyunjoo and Joohwan had been dating for quiet long, they disagreed with each other’s opinion openly, also joked about each other’s limitations. Just like how she did just now, disregarding his lack of popularity than the others in the room.

Chaewon looked over at Joohwan in surprised, but the latter just shrugged his shoulders.

“She does that all the time,” he said.

“Exactly, our Joohwan needs to explode in popularity once to able to get married,” Cha Taehyun teased.

“What about me, Chaewon-ah? Do I need to do that too?” Joongki lightheartedly asked her.

She elbowed his rib. “What nonsense are you talking about?”

A sighing sound came from Insung’s direction, the man slumped on his seat.

“It was nice at Hyung-nim’s era, the media wasn’t as mad as they are now. Look at them now, a friendly outing could turn into a big scandal.”

Everyone, except Chaewon, knew what Insung was talking about. He was once a victim of false media report.

“It was easier at my time, but this lady here, kept going back and forth,” the father of three kids groaned in annoyance, “she broke up with me, she dated another man, then she came back to me again, then she broke up with me again and met a new man. She kept doing it since we were in high school!”

It was a shocking revelation to her who never had too much information about their love life. When everyone else was laughing as it was a topic that was brought up all the time, she just sat in confusion. While the lady in question was leisurely picking a strawberry with her fork and popped it inside .

“Then how did you get married? I don’t mean any offense, but if it were me, I would never be able restart the relationship again. Once the break up happened, there will be no turning point,” she innocently asked.

“Right? I was the crazy one!” Taehyun shouted out, “Even after everything, I still went back to her, and asked her to come back to me. I was the crazy one!”

“Chaewon-ssi,” Suk Eun began calmly, “us, women, should marry someone who appears to love us more. Why did Soo Chan’s father do all those things? Because he loves me more,” the lady paused, a mischievous glint appear in her eyes. “Also, while you are still young, you should date more. Explore more, and that way, you can see different kind of man and choose the best one for yourself.”

The playful advice the older woman had given her only indicated one thing to her, that the lady actually loved Taehyun as much and was trying to say she had found the best man in her life. It was sweet, she thought. She felt envious of them, not in a bad way, it was rather in a pleasant way.

She turned her head and found Joongki staring at her. Her lips were pulled aside, turning into a big grin.

“Then, should we do that too, Hyunjoo-ssi? Should we try meeting more men?”

Joongki shouted, and Taehyun complained immediately.

“YA!”

“Honey, look at what you’re doing, why are teaching them those things?”

Hyunjoo giggled, looking toward her boyfriend wickedly.

“Should we, Chaewon-ssi? I like young actors these days.”

“YA, Choi Hyunjoo!”

“My contact list is full of the people who guest in Running Man, if you guys need any help.”

“Lee Kwangsoo!”

“YA!”

The next one minute Insung, who sat in between Kwangsoo and Joohwan, spent trying to stop both Joohwan and Joongki to hit the tall man to death. Taehyun shook his head at his wife, telling her to reflect on what she had caused.

Suk Eun managed to glance at the wall clock, remembering it was near the time the kids came home from pre-school.

Taehyun rose up from his spot.

“Adults, behave! The kids will be here in any minute. They shouldn’t see you hitting each other, especially Taeun, she will imitate it and hit me the whole night.”

They finally stopped and broke away from each other.

“Oh, the cuties are coming! I’ve been wanting to see them!” Chaewon exclaimed excitedly, raising both her arms halfway.

Beside her, Joongki grabbed one of those arms, gripping it hard.

“Miss Moon, we have a lot to talk later. Don’t think you can get away easily this time.”

That sharp look, piercing stare, and deep tone.

Chaewon realized it a little bit too late, she had made herself a trouble.

.

Author's update :

FINALLY!

I researched a lot for this chapter, trying to get to know a little bit more about Joongki's circle of friends. Thankfully, I happened to watch a few episodes of 2 Days 1 Night long time ago, and one of it was the episode where Insung and Kim Kibang (also the president of Namoo Actors lol) came as guest. I used Cha Taehyun's wife's real name here, also the name of their daughter. For Im Joohwan's girlfriend, she is just a non-celebrity character that I made up.

Some of you might be disappointed from the lack of skinship in this chapter, also the lack of dialogue for Kwangsoo and Insung and Joohwan. I want to focus on the dynamic of their relationship for this chapter. Not sure if you notice it or not, Chaewon in chapter 9 is way more comfortable around Joongki than she was before. Also, she got annoyed at him, talked back to him, and joked around with him. The same goes to Joongki too, he had earned more of Chaewon's trust as she let him know the pass code to her apartment. He got annoyed over her small act, and had started yelling "YA!" at her. They had passed the honeymoon phase, where everything was sweet and their argument was held back and minor. They are already a few months into the relationship, they will still be sweet, but also start to show "their true colors" LOL. But, as the purpose of this fic was adding more fluffiness to Chaeki's fandom, so I purposely ended the chapter there. It should be ended there so you all could sleep peacefully until my next update (which we are not sure when it will happen LOL). If I wrote any further than that, it would get to the argument part, and as I said, it won't resolve easily this time.

Also, for Kwangsoo's character, there might be people expecting to see him with his Running Man image in this chapter. But, as I wrote this chapter, I remembered reading it somewhere before that Kwangsoo was actually a lot different than his Running Man image. So, I decided not to write him in his silly and too playful character.

Lastly, I'm sorry it took this long for me to update. I can't promise that I would update soon, but I will not abandon this story, so please watch over it kindly. I'll wait readily for your feedback and thoughts of this chapter. See you again on my next update, or the other story ^^ Thank you ^^

PS : Did you see the pictures from Chaewon's fansign last week? She looked charming and lovely as ever, and seemed to have lost a quite amount of weight ): I read that her long hair was an extension because it was a shampoo product she is endorsing. I'm curious to see how long her real hair is right now. I hope she will announce a comeback soon >0<
